Athletes used to add small sand bags or small iron weights around their ankles for the same effect. But the older methods causes direct impact on the joints like ankles. Lifting a dumb bell or iron weight bar prevents direct impact on the joints on the leg. I've seen the photos... They aren't sadistic at all. Very scientific in fact.
