There are no plans to sell HIV self test kits. As far as I know, our government felt that the vast majority of Singaporeans are apparently :

1. Too stupid to use the test kits properly, which may give false results
2. Too frigging horny that they will fuck anyone who tests negative, resulting in promiscuity and happy sex anywhere anytime.
3. Too balless that they'll kill themselves if they should test positive in the privacy of their own home.

So, no, test kits are not to be sold in Singapore. Bummer.

Re: HIV self-test kit

I don't think Singapore plan to sell any HIV Self Test Kit. Maybe in the near future? Nobody know. So just go for an anonymous HIV testing.

Re: HIV self-test kit

It was originally reported to have it at 7-11 or clinics near the pubs/ktvs etc

Later, the idea was dropped in case ppl don't how to use it properly and get the wrong results. The final outcome is that it would not be available as anonymous HIV testing is available.

I remember two years ago during an anonymous test session at DSC, I was asked to participate in a trial self-test kit survey. The procedure and test kit was exactly the same as those used by the AFA staff. I was given a set of instructions to follow and a survey form to fill in after the test.

I gave it a try and felt nervous during the finger-pricking and blood collection stage. Overall, it was a doubly suspenseful experience of conducting the test by myself and having to find out the test result. Thankfully, the AFA staff guided me along while the result turned out negative.

I guess the survey result was not encouraging enough for the self-test kit to be made available to the public. Probably the anxiety of extracting one's own blood, myself included, is too much to bear for some people.

User Acceptability and Feasibility of Self-Testing With HIV Rapid Tests.

Epidemiology and Social Science

JAIDS Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes. 45(4):449-453, August 1, 2007.
Lee, Vernon J MBBS, MPH, MBA *; Tan, Soon Choon MTS, MSoc *; Earnest, Arul MSc, CStat *; Seong, Peck Suet MBBS, MMed, FAMS *; Tan, Hiok Hee MBBS, FRCP, FAMS +; Leo, Yee Sin MBBS, FRCP, FAMS ++
Abstract:
Objective: Because HIV rapid tests are considered for self-testing, this study aims to determine the user acceptability and feasibility of self-testing.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 350 systematically sampled participants across 2 Singapore HIV testing centers using the Abbott Determine HIV 1/2 blood sample rapid test (Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, IL). Participants were surveyed on knowledge of and attitudes toward rapid testing. To determine interrater agreement between self-testing and trained personnel testing, participants performed self-testing with visual instructions, followed by trained personnel testing. Ability to identify test outcomes was determined through interpretation of sample test results.

Results: Eighty-nine percent of participants preferred testing in private, but most indicated that confidential counseling by trained counselors was necessary. Almost 90% found the kit easy to use and instructions easy to understand. Nevertheless, 85% failed to perform all steps correctly, especially blood sampling, and 56% had invalid results because of incorrect test performance. Interrater agreement between results from self-testing and trained personnel testing had a [kappa] value of 0.28. Twelve percent could not correctly determine results using sample tests, including 2% and 7% who read positive and negative samples, respectively, incorrectly.

Conclusions: A substantial proportion could not perform self-testing or identify outcomes. Self-testing with the Determine HIV 1/2 kit in Singapore should be deferred.
