If too many spanish players also a problem cos if they are call up for their country, then LFC will have hard time filling the gaps.

BENITEZ EYEING TITLE BID

Rafael Benitez believes Liverpool can win the Barclays Premier League next season and admits that ending an 18-year wait for the title would be 'the biggest achievement of his career.'
The Reds boss is confident his side can push Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea all the way in the race to be crowned champions in 2009 and insists that such an achievement would surpass any of the previous honours he has won in both England and Spain.

"Winning the title would be the biggest achievement of my career," said Benitez.

"It's more difficult than in Spain because teams here spend big money.

"But we will do our best. The key for me is not to talk about winning the title but to talk about doing a good job so we can be close, so we can be contenders.

"If we are close I think that we can win the title."

Since the end of the 2007-08 campaign Benitez has been busy planning for the forthcoming season.

The Spaniard has been working closely with his staff, identifying players to add to his squad and analysing the areas of his side that he feels need improvement.

"You must do your job with your players after the season has ended and in the summertime you need to do your job with your staff," he said.

"The key, though, is to sign the right players with the right mentality – a winning mentality – competitive players, players who are desperate to come here to win something.

"That is the key for me. We have been analysing a lot of things this summer. For example, we were conceding a lot of goals last season from set pieces.

"We need to know why because the previous season we only conceded six, but this year it has been 16. We need to know why so we can improve in these areas, but keep the team scoring goals in open play.

"We have been really good in defence for three or four years but we need to improve a little bit if we want to be in contention."

Nando had an awesome match and showed his power and pace which had been missing from his game earlier in the tournament.

But to win the league you need players like Iniesta (who was probably their best player overall), game winners (scoring midfielders - Xavi, Silva) and overlapping fullbacks (I was very impressed with Sergio Ramos). We need some of these qualities.

Now we are done with this international football business, we can look fully ahead to the transfer season

BOSS CONFIRMS PELLEGRINO APPOINTMENT

Mauricio Pellegrino : Defender 2005
Date of Birth: 05/10/1971
Birthplace: Argentina
1st team games: 12
1st team goals: 0
Other clubs: CA Velez Sarsfield, Barcelona, Valencia

Mauricio Pellegrino is set to return to the club as first-team coach, Rafa Benitez today confirmed.
The Argentine defender, who played 12 games for the Reds under Benitez in 2005, will become the second high-profile addition to the backroom team following the arrival of Sammy Lee earlier in the summer.

Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv the 36-year-old had much to offer.

"His role will be first-team coach, and he'll also carry out specialist training sessions," said the boss.

"He can also work specifically with the defence, and also the reserves.

"Pellegrino has a winning mentality. He won the Intercontinental Cup before going to Spain with Barcelona and Valencia.

"He has a lot of passion. When I asked him to come he was very pleased, but first he wanted to find out if there was a school where his three children could play good football. He is a football man."

Pellegrino had been coaching Valencia's youth team.

Congrats El Nino.... u power la bro

Why Xavi? Are we linked to him? Can't imagine Barca letting him go. It seems we are linked with a lot of players. Sigh. Hope it's not just talk. But then again, our annual budget is always so miserly.

I rather buy Downing at 10 million pounds than Silva at 20 million pounds then. Downing, Bentley, Joaquim for our wingers.. That will be an improvement over last season. If we do get quality wingers, i think playing time for benyanoun will be drastically cut down.

Aston Villa reject fresh Liverpool bid for Barry

Gareth Barry's Aston Villa nightmare deepened on Wednesday night when the midlands club confirmed they had rejected a new bid from Liverpool.

But Villa insist the offer from Anfield was not the £17million one widely reported earlier in the day.

Liverpool also denied they had made a £17million bid, and insisted it was 'not their final offer''.

But on a day when Villa boss Martin O'Neill fined club skipper Barry two weeks' wages for his Sunday newspaper outburst attacking his manager's handling of the prospective deal, Liverpool were again told they had not matched Villa's valuation.

Liverpool had previously seen three bids rejected of £10million, £11million and then £13million and the new offer was believed to be in the region of £15million. O'Neill, however, is demanding £18million.

Barry had raised the stakes this week by publicly attacking his manager, and as well as being fined he was also told not to attend Villa's first day of pre-season training tomorrow.

Villa's latest statement said: 'The club have received a renewed offer from Liverpool for the player but that still falls well short of Aston Villa's evaluation, and has subsequently been rejected.''

Barry's absence from training tomorrow will only heighten the drama over his move, with his current position at the club clearly untenable.

Barry upset O'Neill by intimating the Villa boss was more interested in being a television pundit for the Euro 2008 finals than speaking to him over his future.

He said: 'It's seven weeks now since the season finished but while the gaffer found time to be a pundit for the BCC at Euro 2008, he hasn't found time to speak to me.

'The last time we spoke was just after England's game in Trinidad at the start of June - and that's it.

'It just made me think that the gaffer and the club were just saying one thing in public but were not bothered about me at all in private. What other conclusion can you reach?''

O'Neill earlier denied he had received another offer from Liverpool.
