Hanoi and HCM City to let off fireworks to welcome Lunar New Year
================================================== ========
VietNamNet Bridge – The city authorities have decided to let off fireworks at 29 places, including four places with high-range and 25 with low-range firework shows, at the Lunar New Year’s Eve.

The four places for high-range firework including Hoan Kiem Lake, Dong Da Lake, Thang Loi Hotel and Van Quan Lake.

The 25 places for low-range firework shows will be the capitals of districts. The firework show will last for 15 minutes, from 0 to 0.15 am, February 3, 2011.

The Capital City High Command will be responsible for the firework shows.

The Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade has announced to hold 50 flower markets this lunar New Year (Tet).

The department’s vice chief Nguyen The Hung said urban districts have registered 14 flower markets. On average, each district will have one flower market, except for Thanh Xuan and Cau Giay which will have two markets.

Hanoi will also organize nearly 40 market-days in suburb districts and transport goods to industrial zones and rural areas to serve locals this Tet. Notably, goods supplied at these markets and rural areas will have good quality and reasonable prices thanks to the city’s policy and efforts to stabilize prices.

The city has prepared adequate sources to supply goods for the upcoming Tet to prevent price escalation.

From now until Tet, which will fall in early February, the authorities will set up 40 inspection teams to control the prices at supermarkets and markets.

In HCM City, 15-minute fireworks will be set off at eight different places on New Year’s Eve.

Also in the city, Nguyen Hue Street will be transformed into a street of flowers this lunar New Year (Tet) from January 31 to February 6.

It will feature flowers and bonsai brought from around Vietnam, including fresh flowers from Da Lat and areas in the southwest that will decorate the 800-meter road. The street will begin with a garden of mai trees and apricot trees with yellow blossoms, the symbol of Tet in the south.

The display will be divided into various sections, but all depicting Vietnam’s countryside – there will be stacks of yellow straw, green bamboo trees, rice fields, and bamboo bridges over small canals.

The display will end at Bach Dang port with an apricot tree with large yellow blossoms and an artificial lake.

Elsewhere in the city, its 24 districts will each organize a banh tet (traditional sticky rice cake) making competition from January 26 to 31, and distribute 10,000 of the cakes to children at charity houses and shelters.

Local authorities are also gearing up for the annual Spring Flower Festival at Tao Dan Park in HCM City as the Tet holiday approaches.

The event will begin on January 28 and end on February 8 (the sixth day of the lunar year's first month).

More than 8,000 indigenous and foreign flowers, ornamental fish, bonsai plants and trees will be featured at the festival. They will be provided by florists, farms, handicraft villages and business people involved in agriculture, according to Tran Thien Ha, director of the HCM City Green Tree and Park Company, a member of the festival's organizing board.

Well-known handicraft villages and farms in HCM City, Ha Noi and the provinces of Binh Duong, Ben Tre, Tien Giang, Vinh Long and Lam Dong will introduce their products at the festival.

In addition to the flower displays and sales, the event will include musical and dance performances, as well as cultural exhibitions such as traditional food festivals and painting displays. The festival's themes highlight the 11th Congress of the Vietnam Communist Party, which will open on January 12 in Ha Noi.

The opening ceremony will include three music and song programs in praise of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh, which feature dozens of veterans and young performers.

The show titled Sac Hoa Dang Dang-Dang Bac (Flowers for the Party and Uncle Ho) will highlight revolutionary music.

Designed to feel like a colorful garden, Tao Dan Park will be attractive to children and young people who find inspiration in nature.

Visitors will participate in a variety of street shows featuring folk art and games staged by hundreds of puppet and circus performers, which will begin at 8pm every night.

Organizers said they have received help and support from the city People's Committee and other offices and organizations.

Travel firms say regret late Tet holiday announcement
================================================== ======

VietNamNet Bridge - Tour operators in HCMC have said they have missed a great business chance for launching more tours for the Lunar New Year (Tet) as the long holiday schedule was announced a little bit so late.

The Government has formally announced that the Tet holiday will last from January 31 to February 7, meaning all civil servants and State workers will have eight days off. That prompts people to rush to buy tours, but many travel firms have closed their programs and they could not arrange air tickets, visas, accommodation and related services for more guests.

Companies like Fiditourist, Perfect Tour Travel Co., Viettours Trading and Services Co., Saigontourist Travel Service Co., and some others have reported an increasing number of enquiries for outbound and domestic tours these days.

Nguyen The Khai, director of Perfect Tour Travel Co., told the Daily on Wednesday that the company had stopped selling Tet tours on January 1 but many customers have been asking for the tours after that day because of the long holiday. However, the company cannot sell more tours due to the lack of services like air tickets, hotels, and restaurants, all of which need some months for arrangement.

Perfect Tour has prepared services for just 2,500 travelers on Tet, doubling the number compared to last Tet.

“Around 20 to 30 people are asking for Tet tours everyday but our hands are tied. We would have done better business if the Government had announced the holiday schedule earlier,” he said.

At Fiditourist, the company has prepared services for around 20,000 outbound and domestic travelers on Tet, up 20% compared to last year. Many customers have been asking for Tet tours in recent days but the company has not received deposits because it needs more time to arrange services for the new customers.

“The number of visitors is increasing beyond expectation. We are asking for more air tickets but it is very difficult. We cannot manage this because of the limited time,” said Dang Trung Nghia, deputy general director of Fiditourist.

Currently, the company cannot buy air tickets for outbound tourists while both air tickets and hotels for domestic tours are also very scarce, he explained. Fiditourist said only overland tours to Nha Trang and the North are still available but travelers do not want to go the region due to the cold weather there.

Luu Dinh Phuc, director of Viettours Trading and Services Company, said tour operators could have sold more tours if the Government had announced the Tet holiday schedule six months in advance.

“We see the good business chance this Tet but cannot do anything,” he said.

Saigontourist Travel Service Co. also regrets the tardy announcement but the company has added 50 tours for Tet and sold tours to eight more groups to date.

As of Wednesday, Saigontourist had 15,000 tourists who had placed deposits for outbound and domestic tours during Tet, excluding those who have made registrations only.

Some business related posting below :

Restaurants make huge profits, but carry high risk, owners say
================================================== =======
Restaurant business has high return rate, but it requires a huge amount of capitals and carries a high risk of losses, owners say.

Duong Duc Dung, director of the Viet Pho Restaurant Ltd., disclosed his restaurant has a return rate of 10 percent per month, which helps recover the initial capital in just one year.

Duong Tan Hoai, director of Ngon & Dep Ltd., the operator of the Ngon Restaurant franchise said “restaurant business makes huge return, but it also carries high risk of losses.”

The required amount of capitals for opening a restaurant ranges from VND5 billion (US$250,000) to $30 billion, depending on the location, area and decoration, said a restaurant operator in Ho Chi Minh City.

“If you rent a space to open a restaurant with an annual rental of VND200 million ($10,000), you will have to pay around VND1.2 billion for deposition. Then you will have to spend around VND5 billion more for decoration, furniture stuffs and hiring employees,” he said.

He also warned new operators will likely to suffer losses worth up to hundreds of millions of Vietnam dong in the first several month. The cost for marketing restaurant on medias is an average of VND50 million ($2,500) per month, he noticed.

The increasing number of restaurants in town created a fierce competition between them. The Pho 24 franchise reportedly accused the Pho 5 Sao restaurant on Dien Bien Phu Street in District 3 for copying their decoration design.

The harsh competition forces small restaurants to be more creative in customer services, said Ly Quy Trung, owner of the Pho 24 franchise.

Foreign restaurant franchises with an abundant amount of capital and popular brand name also put more pressure on local operators, he added.

Franchise trend
Many restaurant franchises serving Vietnamese traditional foods have made debuts these days. “Thailand has ambition to become a leading food country. Why can’t we? Vietnam also has lot of fantastic foods, including pho [Vietnamese traditional noodle], spring rolls and beef noodle,” said a restaurant owner in HCMC.

Moreover, many foreign franchises in Vietnam including the US-based fried chicken restaurant KFC, Cocasuki and Breadtalk have planned on offering commercial concession to local businesses.

Marketing professor Philip Kotler said the number of restaurants in Vietnam was increasing steeply, and their quality is being improved strongly, with diversified customer services.

He also valued the country’s strong rate of economic growth, which will enable Vietnam to become the kitchen of the world.

Every business should have legal consultant, official says
================================================== ======

Despite having registered trademarks already, many enterprises have still fallen victims to copyright violations as they do not understand thoroughly the law on brand protection, Nguyen Thanh Binh, head of the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam, said in an interview with Dau Tu Tai Chinh ( Financial Invest )newspaper.

He noticed that every enterprise should have legal consultants.

Dau Tu Tai Chinh: What do you think about the fact that many enterprises were at a disadvantage as other firms copied their trademark without their approval?

Nguyen Thanh Binh: Many local businesses have failed to sue other firms copying their registered trademark since they did not pay attention on regulations of trademark protection.

Trademark protection regulates many terms of creating brand names including not describing products. For example, apple juice makers will not have trademark protection for a logo and brand name of an apple.

Trademark protection will not be granted to a “wonderful noodle” brand name. Some products have protection for their decoration and logo only.

At present, the increasing number of new businesses is making trademark protection getting tougher. Therefore, local enterprises should make a cautious study before registering their trademark.

What should local enterprises do to protect themselves from trademark infringements?

They should rely on other laws, such as the Law on Competition. I have just consulted the owner of Quan Ngon restaurant to rename his restaurant to Ngon Restaurant, which will put his brand name under the protection of the competition law.

Moreover, enterprises should carry out marketing events to let their customers know where their real location is.

According to my study, unlike foreign companies, few of local businesses have legal consultants.

Hiring lawyer offices to be legal consultants is an appropriate move to small- and medium-size companies. They can help make legal procedure quickly and precisely.

How is trademark registering of local enterprises nationwide?

There were 524,000 enterprises registering trademark in last September. However, only 100,000 out of the amount were approved by the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam.

Moreover, I cannot sure 100,000 firms approved as some of them registered many brand names.

For instant, a drug maker produces hundreds of products and it has to register trademark for each of them. Therefore, I can say the amount of enterprises registering trademark remains small.

Do take note if u are drinking this often ............

Fake alcohol erodes rural people’s stomach
================================================== ======
Poor people, especially rural people, are drinking no-brand alcohol which they believe to be rice alcohol but they don’t know that they are consuming fake alcohol which is very harmful for your health. VietNamNet reports.

While writing this article, VietNamNet reporters saw Tung, an alcoholic, who told us about the village that processes fake alcohol – Dai Lam village in Yen Phong district, Hanoi’s neighboring province of Bac Ninh. There are several villages making fake alcohol but Dai Lam is the most “famous” among them.

Fake alcohol making techniques

The local media last year reported about the technique to produce faked alcohol as follows: “industrial alcohol + water + fragrances = rice alcohol”.

It is said that an alcohol producer in Dai Lam village was impatient to produce rice alcohol in the traditional procedures so he went to China to learn the technique to produce rice alcohol from dry alcohol.

As this technique brings about super-high profit, it was quickly expanded to the entire Dai Lam village and “killed” traditional rice alcohol making villages in northern Vietnam.

Another alcohol producer “invented” the second-generation technique – using industrial alcohol instead of dry alcohol. This technique was quickly favored by faked alcohol producers because it can further cut down the production costs while it is easier and faster to produce fake alcohol.

Accordingly, producers only need to mix industrial alcohol with water and the fragrances of cassava, rice or maize to produce faked cassava, rice or maize alcohol.

A short period after that, fake alcohol producers “upgraded” their technique by using fragrant alcohol to produce wine. Thus, they don’t need fragrances anymore, just fragrant alcohol and water as materials.

In Dai Lam village, the tools for producing fake alcohols are oil drums. Fake wine producers pump water into the oil drums to a certain level (they often use bamboo shoulder poles to measure water because drums are 1.5m high) and then pour alcohol into the oil drums. They use bamboo shoulder poles to stir alcohol and water. After half an hour, the solution of water and alcohol will become rice, cassava or maize alcohol, depending on the fragrances applied.

Thanks to this technique, alcohol makers can produce a cubic meter of alcohol within 30 minutes while with traditional method, it will take alcohol producer a whole week.

In Dai Lam village, traditional distilleries have disappeared since this technique was imported. The village now has a dozen of families producing fake alcohol. Each family can produce a daily volume of alcohol which is 3-4 folds more than the entire output of alcohol made by the whole village.

The industrial alcohol which is used to produce alcohol is highly-concentrated alcohol, which is from 90-90o. One liter of industrial alcohol is enough to process four liters of wine. However, this kind of wine will be spoiled after several months. That’s the only disadvantage of the technique.

“Even a child can produce alcohol with this technique. However, not everyone can become alcohol producer because the most important thing is the outlet. You can see some families in our village have villas and cars thanks to fake alcohol,” said Mrs. Dang, a tea seller in Dai Lam village.

Fake alcohol is rampant

Nguyen Van Tung from Binh Da village, Hanoi, an alcohol trader, told VietNamNet that rural restaurants and restaurants for workers and students often buy fake alcohol at the prices of VND3500-5000 ($0.17-0.2) a liter.

According to Tung, some people even make fake alcohol from pesticide or chemicals. “They only put one pill of chemical into water and shake the solution in several minutes to have alcohol,” Tung disclosed.

As the lunar New Year holiday is approaching, the market for wine has become very bustling. In cities, imported wine is favored but in the countryside, rice wine without brands is popular.

Nguyen Huu Thach, a rice wine producer in Thanh Oai district, Hanoi, said: “The need for wine is rising because this time is the wedding season (winter-spring). The demand will increase by 4-5 folds from now to the lunar New Year”.

Thach said that his distillery is now very busy with orders for wedding parties. A wedding often needs 70-80 liters of rice wine, at the price of VND28,000-30,000 ($1.4-1.5) a liter.

He complained that his business is now fiercely competing with fake wine. “Customers can’t identify fake alcohol,” he said.

The owner of a snail-wine restaurant in Hoai Duc district, Hanoi told VietNamNet: “Last month a young man came here to offer me to purchase his rice wine at only VND500 ($0.025) a liter. What a dirty price!”

“Opening the lid, I was nearly fainted because of the smell of alcohol. I’ve sold wine for nearly a decade so I’m experienced enough to identify real rice wine and fake wine. This kind of wine will become water thirty minutes after you pour it a glass,” he added.

Who cares?

Nguyen Van Quy, chief police officer of Tam Da commune, Hanoi said that many families in his commune have produced fake wine for several years to earn large profits. Local residents have reported these cases to the local authorities.

According to Quy, around 200-800 households in Tam Da produce alcohol, depending on the market demand. Many of them make fake wine, using industrial alcohol sourced from China or the central Vietnam.

With hundreds of thousands of liters of fake wine from Tam Da, many people are in danger.

Nguyen Trong Hoi, Chair of Van Ha commune in Viet Yen district, Bac Giang province, the neighbor commune of Tam Da, said: “Fake wine is very dangerous for health but local authorities are incompetent to close such distilleries. We don’t know where they sell this kind of wine”.

In Van village, which is very famous for its traditional rice and cassava wine, wine is still processed by traditional methods but the wine is not safe at all.

VietNamNet reporters saw cassavas being dried on the village road. The material is bought from mountainous provinces and it was very moldy, looking like animal feed. A local explained that moldy cassava will whiten before it is fermented.

Local people also told VietNamNet about the terrible fermenting process: they use Chinese ferments to dust on rice or cassava, which is soaked in water already. Thanks to the special ferments, they don’t need to cook rice or cassava to have alcohol.

Dr. To Van Nhat, General director and Vice Chair of the Avinaa Alcohol Plant, said wine that is processed by traditional methods at craft villages contain toxic substances because traditional methods can’t filter toxic matters (ester, aldehyde, methanol, furferol, etc.) from wine. Traditional alcohol processed from fermented rice, cassava, maze, etc. contain toxic substances at the rate of 50 to over 100 times over permitted thresholds.

Tết traditions
================================

Every year around this time, the Western world struggles to shake-off its post New Year’s hangover.

While they tighten their belts and hunker down for winter, Vietnam gears up for the biggest feast event of the year.

Tết, or the Lunar New Year, falls some time in late January and early February.

During the ancient holiday, everyone puts aside their business to get together, eat well and take it easy.

Poor folks relax flood out of the cities to return to their country homes for perhaps their only vacation of the year.

Housewives and mothers from every nook and cranny of the country will roll up their sleeves and prepare the traditional offerings for the annual return of family and friends.

Southern pork belly

Down in the sweet south, meaty pork belly, greasy coconut meat and boiled eggs are married in a delicious stew.

The rich troika of ingredients are marinated with salt, pepper, sugar, fish sauce and chopped garlic.

The eggs are usually pricked with a pin to allow the flavors to seep inside. Star anise is often added to the mix to provide a distinct holiday flavor.

The whole dish simmers for up to four hours, yielding a delightfully rich stew. You know this dish is good and done when the fat in the striated pork hunks melts in the mouth.

The dish is served up with pickled bean sprout and steamed rice.

Central sour shrimp

The cooks of Vietnam’s notoriously spicy central region during Tết.

The week before the holiday arrives, families set to work cleaning and trimming shrimp for the specially-piquant hot and sour Hue-style prawns.

The cleaned critters are soaked in rice wine, chili, garlic, ginger and salt. Julienned papaya and galanga strips are sometimes added to the mix for an added crispiness.

The jar is left in the sun for around three days and then fermented in a cool, dry place for a further five to seven days.

The pungent, pink and red prawns are a force to be reckoned with, when finished. The sour shrimp are often served with boiled pork, sliced green banana and rice paper.

Northern jellied meat

The north’s reputation for savory, muted flavors is reflected most acutely in its famed Tết delicacy: jellied meat.

Pork leg, chicken and lean pork paste are essentially boiled unrecognizable in a pot with mushrooms, carrots, white radishes and onion.

The mix is then chilled (not unlike French terrine or head cheese) and served up with picked mustard greens, hot rice and chili fish sauce.

Bare bones versions of the dish may contain little more than meat and flavor powder. The crucial ingredient - indeed, the thing that holds it all together - is pig skin.

Green Tết

Each regional household sets to work pickling a veggie antidote to their traditional Tết meat entrée.

A variety of traditional pickles plays a crucial role in bringing off a successful Tết feast.

Pickled bean sprouts, mustard greens and scallion heads provide an excellent counter-punch to the greasy, meaty monotony.

WHERE TO GO

One can go to the following restaurants in HCMC to enjoy the traditional delicacies:

* Vietnam House
93-95 Dong Khoi Street, District 1

* Minh Duc
35 Ton That Tung Street, District 1

* Cay Tre
37 Le Quy Don Street, District 3

* Huong Xua
43 Ly Tu Trong Street, District 1

Banh chung makers hurry to welcome Tet
================================================

VietNamNet Bridge – As the lunar New Year (Tet) approaches, some suburban villages of Hanoi are very busy making banh chung (square glutinous rice cake) to serve the market.

Banh chung (steamed cake) is a traditional Vietnamese cake which is made from glutinous rice, mung bean, pork and other ingredients. Its origin is told by the legend of Lang Lieu, a prince of the sixth Hung Vuong, who became Hung Vuong’s successor thank to his creation of banh chung and banh day, which symbolized respectively the Earth and the Sky.

Considered an essential element of the family altar on the occasion of Tet, the making and eating banh chung during this time is a well-preserved tradition of Vietnamese people. Beside the Tet holiday, banh chung is also tasted all year round as a delicacy of Vietnamese cuisine and one of the national dishes of Vietnam besides nem ran and pho.

because we don't know how to say PJ in TV. :D

PJ = Potong Jalan (tieng malai) = cut go (tieng anh) = jian zuo (tieng hoa) = ?????? (tieng viet)

Potong jalan is a malay word for "cutting out your road".

Never meant to be what you brothers meant "by cutting into other brothers girlfriend"

Hanoi 10th graders sentenced for fatal assault
================================================== =====
Hanoi youth stand behind bars at a court on Friday for beating a fellow student to death

Five tenth-graders and a teenage accomplice were sentenced to between seven and 11 years in Hanoi on Friday, for killing a fellow student, VnExpress reported Sunday.

Nguyen Tien Dat of Co Loa High School was beaten to death last May by a group of students that had been recruited by classmate Tran Van Minh to exact revenge, following an argument.

Minh had asked his cousin, Nguyen Huu Ngoc, 17, to help him teach Dat a lesson, according to the Hanoi People's Court.

Ngoc then recruited Le Ngoc Lam, Nguyen Huy Tien, Tran Cao Cuong and another student named Tuan, to join in the revenge. With the exception of Ngoc, all of the assailants were 16 year-old classmates of the victim.

They waited at the school gate on the last day of school. Prosecutors from the Hanoi People’s Court alleged that each student took turns beating Dat.

The six defendents claimed they were coming to the school to watch the musical performance, not to wait to attack Dat.

Minh got 11 years, Ngoc 10 years, Tien and Cuong each 9 years and Lam and Tuan 7 years each.

[QUOTE=evoking88;5628490]Thank you soooo much. Can I buy you a drink or sumthing? by the way can i ask,

dung nen = should ? (shouldn't)
uong bia = beer ? (drink beer)
se khong = it is? (will not)
va hut thuit = smoke? (should be hut thuoc =smoke)

may bay = airplane, but I think she wanted to say "mai mai", meaning forever
o lai = again
ngo = remember
du dinh = plan, but I think she wanted to say "gui gin" (take care) and typed it wrongly.

"may bay ongxa o do du gin suc khoe nha" may have another explanation: husband over there "beat airplane" (masturbate) remember to take care of health. :D

Only those of KT or Lovesprout's standard then will learn more through songs. Those who only have basic vocabulary need to study from books or internet.

Quote u an example, in songs you will see word like TA. If exist as a single word, it means "I, me or my". But frequently in songs, it means WE ALL. Need more knowledge to understand the meaning of the whole sentence.

Massage parlour chain boss jailed
VietNamNet Bridge – The HCM City People's Court yesterday, Jan 27, sentenced a 38-year-old man to 12 years in prison for running a sex-ring operation involving at least five massage parlours in HCM City.

HCM City native Phan Cao Tri was first charged in 2008 after police discovered illegal practices at the massage parlors.
The manager of the massage parlor, Phan Viet Hau, 28, received a 10-year prison term for property extortion and illegal detention of young women hired as masseuses.
The women were in their late teens to early twenties.
Phan Quoc Cuong, 33, who trained girls in sexual techniques, received a nine-year sentence on the same charge.
The court also sentenced Phan Thi Yen, 32, Tri's wife, to six years in jail for her involvement in the parlors' activities.
Two massage-parlor staff, Nguyen Minh Phuong and Nguyen Hoai Nhanh, got three and two years, respectively.
At the trial, which began on Monday, all of the indicted denied the charges, but based on the evidence of 28 prosecutors and testimony of 60 detained masseuses, the People's Procuracy said Tri and his employees had violated the law.
Police said a total of 137 women were kept against their will for sex exploitation at the massage parlors.
In 2008, police found Tri at one of his massage centres called Tan Hoang Phat in Thu Duc District and charged him with violating the rights of 71 women and illegally detaining and beating 66 others.
To earn high profits, Tri and his staff forced the masseuses at the parlors to work from 9am until the next morning.
After working hours, they were watched carefully at the couple's private house.
According to police, one woman said that some of them had been kept in dog cages after trying to escape from the house. At least 10 bodyguards were assigned to watch the women at the house.
When they were detained at the house or when customers complained about services, the girls were beaten or forced to clean toilets.
One woman who worked for the couple said each woman signed a contract that called for a training fee of VND9 million (US$450).
The contract required the women to pay the employers VND15 million ($750) if they quit their jobs. However, most of them had no savings and could not do so.
They were given VND2.6 million ($130) for meals each month and an average of VND600,000 ($30) monthly salary.
The young women were trained on how to make physical contact that would lead to sexual arousal of their customers. Those who refused to perform these acts were beaten.

Good medicine :D

Festival decoration is good medicine
=============================================

Kumquat, a citrus plant with small fruits grown both in the south and north of Vietnam, is a must-have Tet (Lunar New Year) decoration as a bonsai laden with fruits and flowers.

It symbolizes fertility and abundance. But the plant provides more than good luck. In oriental medicine, the fruit is said to have sweet, sour and warm properties.

Herbalist Duong Tan Hung says the kumquat can treat cough and hoarse throat, and give relief to those suffering from backache and arthritis.

- To beat cough with sputum: Wash 5-10 kumquats, slice fruits in half, deseed and place in a bowl. Add 5g of rock-sugar. Pour a little water in a pot and place the bowl in it. Cover the pot with a lid, and steam the kumquat for 10 minutes. Consume warm twice a day until the cough or hoarse throat disappears.

Alternatively, wash one kilogram of kumquat, pierce each fruit with a toothpick, and place in a jar with two kilograms of sugar. Let sit for a week. Take a teaspoon of the juice, add warm water and drink it twice a day until the cough and sputum clears.

- For hoarse throat: In 10g of kumquat juice, add 50g bean sprouts, 5g sugar and 100ml water for 15 minutes. The mixture should be kept overnight and drunk in the morning after breakfast for three consecutive days.

- For relief from backache and arthritis: In a pot of water, add 5g sliced kumquat peel and 50g of pig’s kidney. Cook for 15 minutes. Serve the dish in the afternoon and evening for ten consecutive days.

- To treat indigestion: Wash three kumquats, chew slowly and swallow.

- To improve appetite during sickness: Wash 30g kumquat, halve and place in a bowl. Add 50g sugar, mix and let sit for 30 minutes. Chew slowly and swallow.

- To cure chills: Boil 30g of kumquat leaves in water. Reduce by about one third. Add some sugar. Drink hot.

- For relief from hernia: Boil half of bowl of white rice alcohol, pour in a bowl with 12g of ground kumquat seeds. Consume the dish twice a day after meals for several days.

NOTE OF CAUTION

Before any preparation, detoxify the kumquat by soaking them in 100ml water with 5g of salt for 45 minutes.

It becomes more and more complicated because every time when you got her sms, bros here help you understand it. Now, she must feel that your tieng viet is already very good; no matter what she said, you always understand. Like that, her sms will become more complicated for sure. would like to ask if vietnamese dong or USD is the more widely accepted currency there, as i think it will be quite troublesome to carry 2 types of currencies.

I also like to ask if booking of hotels is required. Coz i am kinda set on one of the hotels on bro VL's webbie, but can't seem to send a booking request to the hotel. or should i just book the tiger airways type of hotel?

is there any precautions i should take while i am there? for example crime etc.

somehow from what my chiong buddies tell me, i learnt that its a trap

Trap or NO Trap ... it's depends ..... LucK ... Fate .... etc ...

Observe yourself if all this is a Trap ... we Bro here can give advice .. but it boils down to you yourself ....

'Chionging' advice and 'Really want to develop into a fruitful realtionship' advice are different ... so you have to differentiate ...

There are Many Success Relationships and there are also Many Failed Raltionships ....

Ask Yourself what you what from it ?????

There are many who just wanna have fun from it, F & F but then ends up being KC, thus either ends up good or bad ...

Difficult to explain to you all .....

Like Bro Hurricane, JackBl and many BROs mentioned ... Read the Threads I have posted and you will find out more ,,, yes the thread is long but then it's worthwhile spending time reading it .. you dun have to read all at once ... What is important is follow the thread, on and off you will start to realise or find out something ....

I started to follow all these threads due to some particular reason and I ends up learning more and making friends and meeting some bros in VN ... journey have been pleasant so far ....

Every BROs experiences are different ... it's good to observe and share ...

Remember the world is evolving ... Likewise Vietnam is evloving too ... gals mentality changes ... things changes ... life also changes .. therefore we should constantly share and update so that everyone who are REAL towards this forum will benefit from each other sharing ....

Just a bit of my contributions. Abit i have learnt from the big bros here, as well as from my baxa. Will try my best to include pronounciations if i am able to (dun wanna mislead anyone).

I am not sure where to start, so will start with some connectors I find quite helpful understanding the flow of conversations.

Connectors

cung = together, pronounced as "kong"
cung = also/too, pronounced as "kuung"
nen = should, pronounced as "nan"
dung nen = should not
lai = again, pronounced as "lie".
nhat nhat = the most (used in the context of "love the most")
se = event that will happen, pronounced as "say" (can be used in the context of "will" as in "will not, se khong")
va = and, pronounced as "vaa"
voi = with, pronounced as "vui"

Descriptions

tot = good, pronounced as "toot"
som = early, pronounced as "soom"

Objects

bia = Beer , pronounced as "beer" (I guess alcohol in general sense as well)
khoe = health, pronounced as "quear"
khoe manh = healthy, pronounced as "quear maik"
may bay = aeroplane, pronounced as "maai baai"
moi = lips, pronounced as "moor"
ve may bay = plane ticket, pronounced as "vea maai baai"
xe o to = car, pronounced as "seh auto"

Actions

bat may = pickup (used in the context of phone)
gu gin = take care
ho = cough, pronouced as hor
hoc = learn/study, pronounced as hup
hut thuoc = smoking, pronounced as "hoot touc"
o lai = remain
no cuoi = smile

Places

bien = sea/beach, pronounced as "been"
san bay = airport, pronounced as "shen baai"

Food (some general food terms i used when with my baxa to ask her wad she want to eat)

bo = beef, pronounced as "bor"
ca = fish, pronounced as "qa"
con cua = crab, pronounced as "kan quer"
ga = chicken, pronounced as "gah"

will take a break here for now. will append to this post once i have learnt more in detail

Reason being without the context , you are unable to confirm the meaning of it coz it can represent other being too ...

for example bo - without the context it can be beef but it can mean others ...

Some Tet Greetings to share in addition to big bro KT's earlire post at the request of big bro jackbl. Please correct me if my post contains any mistakes.

More basic ones. (from internet)

Sống lâu trăm tuổi (to wish elders to live up to a hundred years, good for wishing your in laws if they are old)
An khang thịnh vượng (to wish security, good health and prosperity)
Tiền vô như nước (to wish that money flows like the river; informal)

Slightly more complicated ones. To be used in para form. (I am having trouble with the translation of the greetings below, so will post a loose translation of the greetings instead.)

Ngàn lần như ý
Vạn lần như mơ
Triệu sự bất ngờ
Tỷ lần hạnh phúc.

The above should mean something along the lines of things going as you wish, many surprises, and to wish happiness.

Tống cựu nghênh tân
Vạn sự cát tường
Toàn gia an phúc

The above should mean that the old goes and new comes, to wish luck in all things and to wish happiness for the whole family.

Tết tới tấn tài
Xuân sang đắc lộc
Gia đình hạnh phúc
Vạn sự cát tường

The above should mean to wish financial growth, happiness for the family, and luck in all things.

Giao thừa sắp đến.
Chúc bạn đáng mến.
Sự nghiệp tiến lên.
Gặp nhiều điều hên!

The above should mean that New Year Eve is coming, to wish one luck and that his/her career advances.

Hôm nay có 3 người hỏi tôi về bạn và tôi đã giúp để họ tìm đến với bạn ngay. Tên của 3 người ấy là Hạnh phúc, Thịnh vượng và Tình yêu.

The above is kinda interesting, and is along the lines of saying that there are three people asking for the person receiving the greeting, and the person sending the greeting directed them to him/her. The three people asking for the person are Happiness, Prosperity and Love.

Cung chúc tân niên.
Vạn sự bình yên.
Hạnh phúc vô biên.
Vui vẻ triền miên.
Kiếm được nhiều tiền.
Sung sướng như tiên

The above should mean Happy New Year, peace in all things that you do, boundless happiness, constant liveliness, more money to be earned, and ..... for the person to be happy like a fairy.

Thay mặt Đảng, Quốc hội, Chính phủ, Mặt trận Tổ quốc kính chúc đồng chí và gia đình một năm mới hạnh phúc, an khang, thịnh vượng!

The above is kinda like a communist style greeting, wishing the person a Happy New Year, well-being, and prosperity in the name of the Party, National Assembly, Government and ...FATHERLAND.

Another interesting one. It goes along the lines of a new bike is better than the old bike, but the old bike grips better. A new house is more beautiful than the old house, but the old house has many memories. Don't really understand the next part but its means something along the lines of a the sun is newer but does not give a sense of peace. So welcome the new year but not forget the old. And the last sentence is Happy New Year.

Tân Mão đã đến,
ăn nhậu lai rai,
vô như nước,
muốn gì cũng được,
thịnh vượng bình an,
chúc mừng năm mới!

The above should mean, The year of the cat is here, money flow like river, and to wish peace and prosperity in what ever you do. Last sentence is, as usual, to wish a Happy New Year.

The above should mean to wish you a firm (???, will appreciate any help on this) health, a sea of love, an ocean of friendship, a song of love, a faithful lover, a bright career, and a prosperous family.

Tân Mão vừa sang, (Cat Year is here ?)
hạnh phúc mênh mang, (immense happiness)
ý chí vững vàng, (strong willpower)
niềm vui rộn ràng, (i am guessing busy having fun)
tiền bạc lai láng, (overflowing money)
sức khỏe cường tráng, (robust health)
cả nhà cười vang, (everyone laughing?)
chúc mừng năm mới, (Happy New Year)
Gâu gâu gâu! (WTF?!?!?! i am guessing is animal sounds)
Anh sống thật lâu, (you live a long time)
tiền vô như nước, (money flow like water)
gia đình đại phước, (fortunate family)
sức khỏe dồi dào, (abundant health)
hạnh phúc tuôn trào! (overflowing happiness)

This is complicated. Will need some bros help on this.

Năm nay năm Tân Mão,
chúc bao điều thuận lợi,
chúc mọi người sống lâu,
chúc cả nhà sang giàu,
chúc anh em mạnh khỏe

The above should mean, this year is the cat year, wish many things to be favorable, everyone to live long, everyone to be rich, and wish you good health.

Apologies in advance for poor translation.

Hope that bros find this helpful. Just a little bit of work to thank the bros whom have helped in my past requests for translations. Apologies again if I have made anyone spoon feed me in the past.

Why dollar interest rates keep rising?
==================================================

VietNamNet Bridge – Dollar deposit interest rates keep increasing. Banks raise their offered interest rates regularly to retain depositors and attract new clients. However, no one knows why the dollar interest rates keep rising.

In late 2010, the Asia Commercial Bank (ACB) announced their new slight increase interest rates for dollar deposits. Seven days later, Eximbank raised their interest rates (its highest interest rate is 5.2 percent per annum). Vietcombank, a bank which usually keeps deposit interest rates low because they have many different capital sources, also followed the crowd and raised their deposit interest rate to five percent at maximum.

More importantly, all the above said banks are big banks which have profuse capital.

Analysts say that the slight increases of dollar deposit interest rates have not had big impacts on the market, because the “big guys” still keep their interest rates at no more than five percent per annum.

However, the market is still heating up in some places. VietBank, for example, has raised their deposit interest rate to six percent per annum, and Navibank, to 6.24 percent.

In principle, when the demand for capital increases, commercial banks have to raise deposit interest rates in order to attract more capital. If this happens, this would not be surprising to people who witnessed the foreign currency credit boom in 2010 (the foreign currency outstanding loans increased sharply by 37.7 percent). People think that the tendency will continue in 2011, especially when the gap between the Vietnam dong and dollar interest rates is very big.

However, it is quite strange that when asked about the reasons behind the dollar interest rate escalation, a manager of a commercial bank also said that he himself is trying to seek to understand the reasons. He himself cannot understand why the interest rates are increasing when the demand for foreign currency loans and the disbursement of the bank have not seen any major changes.

Meanwhile, another banker, who raised interest rates, said that it is simply because some banks need dollars to meet the demand of some enterprises and they decided to raise interest rates in order to arrange enough money. And once some banks adjust their interest rates, other banks also have to follow the move, because they fear that they will lose depositors to other banks that offer higher interest rates.

According to Thoi bao Kinh te Vietnam, there is another supposition that explains why banks are raising interest rates.

In mid December 2010, responding to the call from the State Bank of Vietnam commercial banks, had to commit to keep interest rates at 14 percent per annum at maximum. Banks have also been required not to use gifts and promotion campaigns in order to push the actual interest rates up.

Since all banks now mobilize capital at the same ceiling interest rate of 14 percent, small banks will find it more difficult that bigger banks to mobilize capital. Therefore, in order to get enough capital, small banks have thought of seeking capital in foreign currencies, and then converting the foreign currency capital to Vietnam dong to lend to clients.

This is just a supposition. However, the supposition appears to be very reasonable. That also can explain why the banks that sharply raised the dollar interest rates are the small banks which once faced problems in liquidity and had to offer very high interest rates in Vietnam dong.

For ppl who are in hcmc or hanoi.....

Thousands flock to festival
===========================================

VietNamNet Bridge – Thousands of people in HCM City and Ha Noi began visiting the annual spring flower festival that opened on Jan 26.

A Spring Flower and Drinks Fair which opened in Ha Noi will see some last-minute politicking for the selection of Viet Nam's national flower.

The fair will also feature a photo exhibition by HCM City-based photographer Tran Bich dedicated to the lotus, a leading candidate for designation as the national flower.

Bich is dedicated to photographing the lotus, and his images capture the many shapes of the lotus, from bud to faded flower.

Orchids, peach and ochna blossoms are also in contention for the title of national flower, however.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will gather votes on the national flower, national costume and national wine during the festival, and the national flower will be announced tomorrow at the Viet Nam Lotus Spirit Gala.

At the Lotus Spirit Gala, artisans from Ha Noi, Hue and HCM City will create crafts and artworks celebrating the lotus, including lotus lanterns and sculpture and silk lotus.

"We have used many materials to celebrate the lotus," said Ha Noi-based artist Nguyen Manh Hung. "Since it's not the season of the lotus in the north now, we have received fresh lotus from the southern province of Dong Thap."

The competition to select the national costume hasn't gone as smoothly.

"The ao dai is already the national costume for women, but it's difficult to choose the national costume for men," said Vi Kien Thanh, chief of the ministry's art, photography and exhibitions department.

Meanwhile, the selection of a national wine plan is still in the survey stage, Thanh said. Over the past three years, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Viet Nam Alcohol, Beer and Beverage Association have nominated ruou can (wine drunk from a jar), rice wine, coconut wine and apricot wine for the honour.

The Spring Flowers and Drinks Festival will continue through Sunday at the Culture and Art Centre at 2 Hoa Lu Street.

The fair will exhibit and offer prizes for wines and spirits made by both traditional and modern methods, offer opportunities to sample wines, tea and coffee, and will feature performances, folk games, an ao dai (traditional long dress) fashion show, and calligraphy exhibition, as well as recreate customs such as the Kitchen Gods Festival. At least 50 enterprises will also display products for Tet, including decorations and ornamental trees.

Ha Giang Province will take the spotlight, recreating a provincial market day with local specialities, cuisine and festivities of the province's ethnic people, including pan-pipe dance and folk duets.

The week-long event, which will last until February 1, a day ahead of the Lunar New Year, displays the beauty of Vietnamese flora in Phu My Hung Residential Area, HCM City.

This festival hopes to attract around 500 booths, displaying all kinds of flowers, plants, birds, fish, ceramics and calligraphy.

This year's flower festival in HCM City is expected to attract thousands visitors with a rich assortment of blossoms.

The Phu My Hung Spring Flower Festival 2011 features a contest of special Vietnamese flowers and ornamental trees, called Hoa Dong Co Noi (Flower of Countryside).

Nguyen Thien Tich, vice chairman of the municipal Association of Orchids and Ornamental Trees, said, "It's a chance for everyone to explore the abundant flora in the country."

The country has more than 12,000 flowers and other kinds of plants.

Along with the contests, the week-long festival will include other activities such as a ceremony to release flowers and garlands, and floating lanterns on Ban Nguyet Lake.

The lake will be decorated with giant lotus flowers which will be lit for photo opportunities.

Different festival areas include Cat Square with flowers arranged in the shapes of cats, the ochna, apricot and peach blossom section, 12 animal designations of the lunar calendar and the legend about the man, Mai An Tiem, who discovered the watermelon.

There will be music shows at the festival every night until the evening of February 1.

The festival, co-organised by Phu My Hung Joint Venture Company and HCM City Ornamental Creature Association, expects to attract more than 500 enterprises displaying flowers, fruit and Tet (Lunar New Year) products.

Last year, more than 500,000 visitors visited the flower festival held in the residential area.

The majority of these products were produced in the city and outlying areas.

Also yesterday, 30 flower markets opened around the city to welcome city dwellers shopping to decorate their houses during the New Year's days.

Flower exhibitions will be held at major parks like Gia Dinh, Le Van Tam and September 23. Ochna, kumquat and daisy are among the most popular

In District 8, flowers carried by boats from the Mekong Delta are being displayed along the canal at Ben Binh Dong. The market recalls the hectic trading activity of Sai Gon 100 years ago.

Around 25 flower markets in districts 5, 6, 10, 11, Go Vap, Tan Phu, Thu Duc, Binh Tan and Cu Chi have opened.

HCM City to open tourism park
=======================================

VietNamNet Bridge – A tourism park with a strong cultural theme is being built in time for Tet (lunar New Year) in HCM City's suburban Cu Chi District.

Viet Nam At A Glance, located off Bo Cap (Scorpion) pier in An Phu Commune, resembles a giant garden with traditional varieties of flowers, bonsai, and fruit and bamboo trees of various kinds and sizes.

But designers and carpenters worked hard to create a 22.5-ha village that depicts the cultural and daily aspects of the life of people in various regions of the country.

It has hundreds of model houses, rickshaws, and everyday objects made of bamboo, wood, and clumps of rice straw and grass.

Artisans from as far-flung areas as Cao Bang make traditional dishes, cakes, liquor, and handicrafts, which are both displayed and sold.

There is a playground for traditional games that takes older people back to their childhood when they themselves played those games.

Music and dance and food related to ethnic groups can be seen at several spots around the park.

"We have worked hard with our suppliers, including farms, agricultural companies, and tourist agencies, to make our park one of the city's biggest and best cultural and entertainment centres," Tran Thi Tuyet Nga, a member of the park's managing board, said.

"Through its unique products, we hope visitors will discover and enjoy slices of Viet Nam's history, culture, and lifestyle in different regions.

"I'm sure both local and foreign photographers and artists will find inspiration here."

She and her 200-strong staff hope to welcome 40,000-50,000 visitors during the Tet holidays in the first week of February.

Henry Nguyen Lam, a Vietnamese-American businessman who is visiting the country for Tet, says: "My family and I will tour Cu Chi and visit Viet Nam At A Glance."

Entry tickets cost VND50,000 to 95,000 and are available at the venue. They can also be booked at 08 2218 1465 .

The park's website at http://www.motthoangvietnam.vn offers more information.

Com – a green shade of deliciousness
============================================

VietNamNet Bridge - Much has been said of Vietnam’s obsession with rice. There are rice noodles, rice desserts, rice pancakes and just plain rice... and then, there is com.

Com is no ordinary com. It is freshly harvested sticky rice, with a natural subtle sweetness prized by connoisseurs and gourmet chefs worldwide.

The immature rice kernels are roasted over very low heat and then pounded into flat flakes you see in markets.

Com is most common in the northern region of Vietnam. Visitors to Hanoi often buy small packs of com as souvenir gifts for family and friends.

Com is a traditionally gift to newly-wed couples, and also given during Tet and the mid-autumn festival.

Though it is grown all over Vietnam, the com of Vong village (on the outskirts of Hanoi) is the most prized for its unique flavor and fragrance. Vong villagers closely guard their family secrets of growing, harvesting, and processing the best green rice.

The most important thing when harvesting com is to check the suitability of the rice kernels. The farmer bites into raw grains to check their sweetness. If the rice is as sweet as milk, they are ready for harvest.

Mature grains do not produce the vivid green coloring, and grains that are too young fall apart when pounded.

Com-course meals

In the countryside, com is often steamed in lotus or banana leaf. In cities, it is most commonly used in banh com, a popular green rice cake peddled by street vendors and made in artisan kitchens.

To make the filling for banh com, steam pounded mung beans and caramelize it with sugar over very low heat.

Add shredded coconut, Vietnamese candied lotus seeds or candied winter melon to the caramelized mung beans. Stuff this filling in green rice cakes and wrap each cake in a banana leaf to make banh com.

Another popular green rice dish is cha com – fried ground pork with green rice.

To make cha com, ground pork is first mixed with green rice, fish sauce and pepper, steamed, and then fried until the meat turns brown and crispy.

Specialty restaurants use com in delicacies such as deep-fried shrimp or spring rolls coated with green rice.

Com is also used in the popular dish che com – green rice sweet soup. To make che com, green rice is cooked with arrowroot or Kudzu root powder, rock sugar, and drops of pomelo flower essential oil.

Other sweet com treats include green rice ice-cream and green rice fried with coconut.

Green rice delicacies are fast catching on in foodie circles across Vietnam. Several restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City also feature green rice dishes on menus now.

Vietnamese flock to pagodas for New Year
================================================

Ngoc Dung’s family from Van Chuong alley on Kham Thien street in Hanoi’s Dong Da district often goes to the pagoda on the first day of the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday. While most business households visit large and well-known pagodas, Dung’s family chose one nearest their house for traffic convenience and to avoid the hustle.

“Apart from praying for happiness, prosperity and good health for family, visiting pagodas gives us a chance to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere at religious places,” the 40-years-old Hanoian said.

Visiting pagodas at the beginning of Lunar New Year has become an age-old tradition of Vietnamese people. While streets in Hanoi are deserted in the first day of New Year, a stream of people goes on a pilgrimage at Tay Ho, Tran Quoc pagodas or Ngoc Son and Quan Thanh temples.

Among the religious destinations, Tay Ho pagoda attracts the largest number of visitors from both in and outside Hanoi with several thousand each day during Tet holiday.

Fruit and offering shops in the entrance leading to the pagoda are overcrowded with visitors on the occasion.

Madam Thanh, 70 who is also from Kham Thien street, said he often goes to Tay Ho pagoda with his old friend on the first day of new year.

“We can go to the pagoda anytime but the first day is a special time of a year to pray for good things for our family”, he explained.

Meanwhile, many citizens, especially students, chose to visit the Temple of Literature in the new year.

Nguyen Thu Phuong from Quan Su street in Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem district said she visited on the first day of Lunar New Year to pray to become a good learner.

“This year, I pray for good health for my family and wish that I will enter Teachers Training University,” Phuong said.

The first half of the first lunar month is the best time for a pilgrimage. Joining the flow of devotees in the spring’s wonderful atmosphere you may feel the harmony of the sky and the ground, she said.

Colorfully wrapped Cakes ring in Lunar New Year
================================================== =

Vietnamese people usually ring in the Lunar New Year by making various kinds of cakes, some of which they then wrap in colorful paper and offer as a worship to their ancestors and to entertain their guests during Tet.

To make In Cake people first whittle moulds from jackfruit wood in shapes of circles and squares which often have vignettes of leaves or flowers.
The main ingredient to make the In Cake is sticky rice powder which is sometimes mixed with peeled green bean powder and kneaded into dough. The dough is then mixed with refined sugar and then poured into the moulds and compressed tightly.

After the In Cake is pressed into the mould it takes on the shape of the mould. It is taken out of the mould and put on a large and flat basket covered with newspaper.

The basket is then placed to bake in a moderately hot charcoal fire. This helps to melt the refined sugar and harden the cakes.

When the In Cakes are baked they are wrapped in colorful pieces of paper which are cut to size. The paper stays in place with glue made from sticky rice powder. In some places the In Cakes are wrapped in paper pieces made from shining nylon which is then glued by a burning incense to press on the papers edges.

Home ingredients make sweet Tet
=========================================

Like some regions in the Mekong Delta, Tra Vinh grows a lot of cassava. Its roots make the main ingredient for the famous Tra Vinh chupatty, a local snack served during the country’s largest festival Tet.

It’s not known when the Tra Vinh cassava chupatty was first made, but the tradition has been passed down through generations. The sweet crispy cake is made not only for Tet, but for almost any traditional celebrations as an offering to the ancestors.

During the last days of the lunar year, villages around the province would be busy making the cake.

Big, floury cassava roots are chosen. Their cover is removed and they are boiled, and then left to get cool. Sugar is melted.

Strong men crush the boiled roots in mortars while women add sugar continuously until the mixture gets soft and sweet all over.

The mixture is made into balls and the balls rolled into thin round layers like plates. The plates are then put on mats or grates to get dry.

All the work is done through the night and the wet cakes will be ready for the first light of the day. When the cakes get dry, another step to have a perfect Tra Vinh cassava chupatty is to bake it on straw fire.

Usually, one family will make much more chupatties than they need, so they can give their friends and relatives as a festival present.

On the last day of the lunar year, when many Vietnamese people make offerings to invite the souls of their ancestors back home to celebrate the new year with them, Tra Vinh people bake their chupatties and put them on the altar to call their ancestors home.

Cassava chupatties are now present at many markets and bus stations these days. The makers have added milk or banana oil for tastier cakes.

Tet with sugar and glutinous rice

Glutinous rice not only makes the famous banh chung and banh day.

Quang Nam Province in the central region has a special Tet snack called banh to, simply made from glutinous rice and sugar, plus a little ginger juice.

The cake is made with flour from the best type of glutinous rice and the sugar that is pressed manually from sugar canes.

The mixture is poured into a small bamboo basket, put on banana leaves or the like.

Then, the baskets are steamed in a big pot. They are put on a grate, also made of bamboo, which is around five centimeters from the water in the pot.

The lid is put on and the cakes are cooked by the steam, so it takes rather long for the cakes to be doned.

Some roasted sesames are scattered on the cakes immediately after they are taken out of the pot. The sesames will stick to the cake and make it look good.

The last thing is to put the cakes to air in one or two days, until they get rough.

Then they are ready for serving. But many people prefer to grill or cut the cake into pieces and fry them, so they look and smell better.

According to old people in the province, banh to first appeared in the late 18th century when local residents made the cakes to offer to Emperor Quang Trung, who was worried about food supply when leading his army to fight Chinese invaders under the Qing Dynasty during the spring of 1789.

Since then, people in the province have been making the cake every Tet season to commemorate the country’s great hero and celebrate his victory.

‘Ancient Night Town’ of Hoi An
==========================================
‘Night in an Ancient Town’ is a unique event that draws people from all over the world to Hoi An.

The event launched12 years ago is solely identified with the ancient town of Hoi An, in the central Quang Nam Province. The event has attracted millions of visitors each year to Hoi An.

The town organizes a spectacularly unique and mystical event every month on the 14th day of a full moon night, when residents and visitors temporarily turn off all electric lights and light candles on the Hoai River.

The town then turns into a mesmericly breathtaking fairyland resembling a beautiful water-color painting. The event known as ‘Night in an Ancient Town’ draws people from all over.

Foreign visitors know the city of Hoi An as a tourist destination, its ancient architecture, its proximity to the Marble Mountains and its lovely China Beach.

Once upon a time Hoi An was far more than just a tourist destination. It was a vibrant, thriving and one of the most important seaports in all of Southeast Asia.

During the 17th and 18th century Japanese, Chinese and Spanish merchant ships anchored in its harbor. War changed all that and Hoi An became a sleepy town with little activity.

During the 20th century, rapid urbanization in commercial cities kept the focus away from this ancient town. Although Hoi An lost it importance as a trading center it still was remembered as an example of a traditional Vietnamese port city.

During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Hoi An was all but forgotten, allowing it to continue its ancient traditional way of life with little influence from the modern, urban and western dominated world.

Gradually by early 1980 local and international researchers began to turn their attention to Hoi An.

In 1999, UNESCO named Hoi An a World Heritage Site because it remained a well-preserved example of a 15th - 19th century Asian trading port and a unique combination of Vietnamese, Japanese and Chinese architecture.

With UNESCO's recognition came tourist recognition and the last decade has seen a different kind of commercial resurgence for Hoi An, as western tourists gradually rediscover the charm of this old Vietnamese city.

Walking on the streets like Tran Phu, Bach Dang, Nguyen Phuc Chu and Nguyen Thai Hoc in this ancient town, transports one into a time zone of days gone by. Many have felt like they were walking in a dream world.

Earlier domestic and foreign visitors knew Hoi An for its ancient multi cultural architecture, but now they feel the essence of an old era and spirit in the town.

Hoi An’s government and residents have remained steadfastly loyal to the ancient spirit that this town exudes and all its cultural and art activities breathe that charm which are quintessential to this ancient town.

The town has attracted more visitors since the Hoi An Culture and Sports Center began to organize night tours and holding night events, popular food courts, art performances, folk games and a unique night market.

The serenity of the town of Hoi An epitomizes a calm, slow and easy pace of life.

One can go back in time as one wanders the many streets amidst ancient houses reflected by multi-colored lanterns with floating sounds of folk singing and traditional musical instruments, occasionally stopping to browse in a craft shop selling traditional Vietnamese ceramic and dreamily savoring the flavors of a life that once was.

Cao Lau: Hoi An Noodle. The most famous dish in Hoi An.
Che Bap: Desert with corn. Something you eat after Cao Lau.

Wow that's nice. U went there alone? :p

Cao lau Hoi An (Hoi An vermicelli)
=============================

Visitors to Hoi An never forget Cao Lau (vermicelli), the special Hoi An and Quang Nam special symbol.

Cao Lau is the foremost traditional Hoi An food. Visitors to Hoi An always remember Cao Lau, which was considered by Quang Nam people as a special symbol for Hoi An.

Cao lau noodles are carefully made from local new sticky rice. Water used to soak rice must be taken from wells in the Ba Le Village; noodles thus will be soft, enduring and flavored with special sweet-smelling.

On the Cao Lau noodles were some meat slices mixed with fat made from fried noodles served with vegetables and bean sprouts. Sharp-witted eaters would find out the specific flavor of the dish.
Dry pancakes used as ingredient must be thick with much sesame on the surface. Greasy coconut quintessence and bitter green cabbage are also indispensable. The so-called genuine Cao lau Hoi An must satisfy all above requirements.

It was said that only some wells in Hoi An were used to make Cao Lau noodles. What is more, only some Hoi An families were able to produce Cao Lau by their own traditional way, but the quality was not as good as it was before. Cao Lau did not have Vietnamese flavor. Despite its Chinese-like appearance, no Chinese accepted it as Chinese food. Until now, the origin of Cao Lau still remains in mystery.

“Chè bắp” of Hoi An
========================

If you have tried many famous dishes of Hoi An such as: Cao Lầu, bánh đập… but not Chè bắp, it means that you haven’t know Hoi An yet. It is the ver good sweet dish made from maize.

Chè bắp of Hoi An is more viscous than anywhere. Chè bắp kiosks stay along Hoai River and maize fields lay on the other side, indefinite and fresh green. Harvested maize on the fields is processed right after that. Hoi An people say that Chè bắp are delicious because the maize is still fresh when processing, not through middle markets.

Chè bắp has a lightly sweet. This sweet isn’t of sugar or condiment, this is the sweet of fresh maize. Some places, they use Chè bắp with coconut juice but Hoi An people don’t do that. The real taste of Chè bắp is simple but impressive, enjoying Chè bắp in kiosks along Hoai river must have the best way.

Noodles from vegetables
==========================

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Nguyen, director of the Hai Thien Food Company, has officially become a new record holder for the first person to make Pho noodles from vegetables in the country.

The Vietnam Guiness Book of Records has listed Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Tuyen, director of Hai Thien Food Company as a record holder for the first person to make Pho noodles from vegebtables.

Hai Thien Pho restaurant on Bui Vien Street in District 1 of HCM City has recently attracted a great number of foreign visitors. The restaurant is uniquely different from its competitors as it does not only serve traditional white pho noodles, but also in other colors like orange, yellow, green and purple made from cochin chin gourd, pumpkin, green and purple cabbage.

The restaurant is gaining popularity even in far off places like Hawaii, California and Norway.

The Vietnam Guiness Book of Records has now listed Nguyen Thi Thanh Nguyen, 36, director of Hai Thien Food Company as a record holder.

Nguyen’s family are famous pho noodle makers of Vietnam, hailing from Binh Thuan province and operate under the brand name Hai Thien since 1983.

After graduating in Finance and Accounting, young Nguyen worked with an instant noodle manufacturer of Thailand, where she honed her skills and learnt new food processing technologies.

She then took over her parents business, in the hope of rebuilding the image of pho after the damaging scandal that formol (a highly dangerous preservative) was being used to make pho noodles.

She believes, making high quality, yet hygienic pho noodles is not difficult. The tedious process involves washing the rice, soaking it in water and grinding it into a paste which is soaked in water once again and then rolled by mild coating of oil then cut into thin strips. The key is to have patience during the time-consuming process. She maintains her quality of pho by preparing her own homemade flour.

In 2009, Hai Thien received a number of orders from North America and Europe. But Nguyen does not let this go to her head. She wants to continue to make pho noodles from vegetables and tries to continually introduce new dishes with names like “fruity pho” and “pho salad”.

Unique countryside dishes
===============================
Vietnam’s southern provinces are not only famous for its poetic rivers and evergreen rice fields but also well known for popular dishes made from local specific materials.

When it comes to cakes, women in such provinces as Sa Dec, Long Xuyen, Vinh Long and Rach Gia can compete with each other in making various cakes, including “bánh bò” (sweet, chewy sponge cake), “bánh bột lọc” (cassava cake packed with shrimp), “bánh ít trần” (stuffed glutinous rice flour balls), “bánh ướt” (steamed rice paper), etc.

They also serve their guests with “bánh hỏi thịt quay” (roasted pork served with extremely thin noodle that is woven into intricate bundles), “bò gác tréo” (a whole young cow grilled on coal-fired oven), “vịt tiềm” (stew duck), “dưa đầu heo” (preserved pork head meat), “mắm tôm” (shrimp paste), and some other specialties.

Among the most popular dishes is "Giang Nam Dã Hạc," with “Giang Nam” being China’s Jiangnan province, “dã” meaning “field,” and “hạc” meaning “crane”. The whole name means “a crane perching on a field in Jiangnan.”

“Giang Nam Dã Hạc” is a high nutritious food arranged subtly and aesthetically. It is actually a roasted hen placed above four layers of different “eggs” between which are cooked bamboo shouts. Underneath the last layer is the fried rice.

The food’s ingredients include young hen, pig brain, pig gut, shrimp, crab, sparrow, sausage, dried meat, ginger, lemon, white wine, peanuts, sesame sauce, Chinese soybean paste, coconut milk, pig’s omental fat, flour, onion, water chestnut, pepper, sugar, pine mushroom, and fresh bamboo shoots.

Imagine a large plate of food placed on a dining table for five diners. A bunch of paper flowers is designed to cover the plate, drawing the attention of diners who wonder what they are about to enjoy. When the bunch of flowers is put aside, dinners see the plate filled with the multilayer foods, top of which is a yellow roasted chicken posed as an egg-incubating chicken.

The chicken, which is already divided into several parts, is brought down to another plate and then shared among the diners. Following the chicken is a layer of what so called the “hatching eggs”, which are actually cooked baby birds, like sparrows, each of which is put in a piece of pig intestines designed to look like an egg shell, with the bird’s head sticking out of the shell. Beneath the eggs are the boiled bamboo shoots arranged to look like straw that chickens usually use to lay and hatch their eggs.

After this layer is another layer of “addled eggs,” as their color is similar to that of addled chicken eggs. In fact, the specialty is made from pig liver, beans, sesame, soy sauce, coconut milk and pig brain, all wrapped with pig’s omental fat and then covered with a piece of pig’s intestine pieces. Such the eggs are baked first and then fried. The dish is served with bamboo shouts simmered with coconut milk.

Then comes the layer of “mature eggs,” which are made from shrimp, flour and water chestnut. The dish is served with boiled bamboo shouts. The last layer is the “young eggs”, prepared from dried pork, sausage, crab meat, onion, and mushroom, all mixed together and stuffed in pork intestine. The “eggs” is boiled first and then fried. It is also served with cooked bamboo shouts.

After these four layers, dinners can enjoy the fried rice that comes last on the plate.

Another attractive dish is the “crossed beef”. Imagine a young cow roasted above an outdoor coal-fired oven, which is surrounded by some tables for rice paper, vegetables and sauce. Eaters use sharp knives to pierce into the skin of the cow and then slit it to expose the flesh. Such a party is usually set up in gardens.

Some other delicious dishes are grilled snakehead fish covered with banana ocrea, grilled duck covered with clay, and shrimp dipped in coconut milk. These dishes are quite complicated but are very attractive to gourmets.

Simpler dishes include anabas braised in a caramel or clay pot; sour soups with snake-head fish, tra fish, shark catfish; or grilled walking catfish served with ginger fish sauce.

Meanwhile, dog meat is seen as an unusual dish, since the dog is considered as a symbol of loyalty. In rural areas, eating dog meat is a chance to gather friends for joy. Dog meat can be used in place of venison, so it is prepared the same as weasel or snake meat. Accordingly, there are several dishes from dog meat, including stir-fried dog meat, minced dog meat served with rice paper, and dog meatballs. Dog meat can also be prepared in style of the seven-course beef.

On nights with bright moonlight, people who like singing while drinking and eating often gather on some small boats on the Tien or Hau River. On these boats, they play traditional music, chant poems, tell humorous stories, and enjoy countryside dishes, like fresh shrimps grilled over a coal fired oven. Such parties can last until the decline of the moon.

np bro. small deed compared to the help you guys have given me. a big prob i realise i have with learning is the pronounciation of the tones and alphabets. kinda keep using the english pronounciation and end up my bx dun understand lol. eg, d in viet sounds like z in english.

and i think what the book is teaching is more of a formal speaking type of viet, as compared to the more casual viet used by the girls.

It’s a national disaster
==================================

Sometimes, disasters are not so in-your-face, like a tsunami or an earthquake.

They could happen in bits and pieces, in trickles instead of a deluge, and we are not likely to see them as a full-scale disaster.

Last month, a national conference on traffic safety in Hanoi reported that 11,449 people were killed in 14,442 traffic accidents in the country last year. 10,663 others were injured.

Compared to the previous year, the number of cases increased by 1,788.

While the death toll went down by 47, the number of injuries went up by 2,500.

The figures get scarier if we look at them closely, and make a few calculations and comparisons.

The latest death toll means 31 people die every day, 217 a week - the casualty rate of a plane crash. At the current rate of traffic fatalities, the equivalent of the entire population of a mountainous district of 30,000 people would be wiped out in less than three years.

The consequences of these accidents don’t stop at the loss of life and the injuries sustained.

A report by the World Health Organization says that road accidents cost between 1-2 percent of GDP in developing countries. That kind of money, which can be used to help thousands of poor people, is spent on treating victims of traffic accidents.

The government set up a National Traffic Safety Committee, and several agencies to enforce traffic laws. Traffic safety news is aired every day on national television, and thousands of community activities are held to promote traffic safety.

But traffic accidents have not decreased. Why?

More than a month ago, I caught a bus from the central province of Quang Tri to Nghe An Province. Like most other buses running from the north to the south, this one was also old, and very crowded.

When it rained, the whole windshield became opaque, as wipers broke down. But, the driver was still speeding and almost crashed into vehicles running in the opposite direction many times.

It’s unbelievable that the lives of people on the bus were at risk because of broken windshield wipers and an irresponsible driver.

If traffic officials agree to take a trip from north to south by motorbike or an old bus like millions of ordinary people, instead of by plane or car, they will understand better the risks involved, and come up with more effective policies.

We are lucky to live in a peaceful country. But how peaceful is it when we face the threat of traffic accidents whenever we go out.

We have talked so much about the causes of traffic accidents – increasing urban population density, increasing number of vehicles, poor awareness of traffic regulations, infrastructural deficiencies and so on.

But, as long as we aren’t fully aware of the reasons behind and consequences of traffic accidents, we are doomed to revisit these figures every year. We have to recognize the scale of this problem: it is truly a national disaster.

I think traffic accidents could caused higher fatality than sickness or natural disaster in vn as time goes by....

1,340 traffic accidents reported during Tet
=================================================

The Ministry of Health reported that hospitals nationwide had received more than 1,340 traffic accident cases from January 31 till February 4.

The number of accidents has dropped drastically since the previous years. Amongst the reported accidents, 128 cases involved people driving without helmets and almost 9,330 people received medical treatment in hospitals, of which 4,689 cases were emergency injury cases.

During the first days of the Lunar New Year, more than 560 cases of childbirth were reported. However, Hanoi admitted some suspected cases of A/H1N1 flu virus.

As the Tet season lasts for eight days, the Ministry of Health has instructed medical centers to work around the clock to tackle with emergency cases as they occur.

Youth violence grows in fast-changing Vietnam
=================================================

Tran Huy Hoang stares in shock at the images of four Vietnamese teenagers slapping and kicking a girl whose hands try to shield the blows.

“How could schoolgirls act so much like gangsters?” asks Hoang, the father of a 14-year-old girl, as he watches the video clip -- apparently filmed by another teenager -- posted on the YouTube website.

The girls pulled off their victim’s T-shirt and bra, leaving her half-naked.

It was one of several clips showing violence among Vietnamese youth that have circulated on the Internet over the past year, sparking concern about the media’s role and a breakdown of family-centered social values in the rapidly modernizing society.

“The traditional values are vanishing while new values are not enough to replace them,” said education expert Pham Toan, 80.

Sociologists say there is no data to capture trends in the violence but it appears to be increasing as social mores change, although the problem is not confined to Vietnam.

“We have to accept the fact that youth violence seems to become more popular,” said Hoang Ba Thinh, a professor of social work at Vietnam National University.

Influenced by Confucian values, Vietnam’s young people traditionally had respect for teachers, parents and the elderly. Rich and poor alike were taught the value of labor rather than of money itself, said Toan.

“If a piece of rice fell from the bowl to the floor, the elderly in the family would remind them that a grain of rice was a seed of gold,” he said.

Parents now have less time for the family as they pursue material wealth, he said.

“In the society now, people only pay attention to earning money and spending it rampantly,” said Toan.

Now, even though traditional moral principles are taught at school, those virtues are not reinforced at home because parents are focused more on improving their lifestyle, and this leaves youngsters confused, he added.

After years of poverty following the country’s reunification in 1975 at the end of the Vietnam War, Vietnam in 1986 began to embrace the free market under economic reforms known as “doi moi”.

The move eventually led to a growth rate among the highest in Asia, and a per capita income that is now about 1,200 dollars.

During wartime and the period of economic hardship that followed, “people were more humane, more passionate and ready to share with each other both sweetness and bitterness,” said Trinh Hoa Binh, from the Institute of Sociology.

People are now so burdened with worries over covering their cost of living, “just a minor car accident or a bad glance can easily result in violence,” he said.

While foreigners still see Vietnam as one of the safest countries in Asia, locals are increasingly concerned. Youth violence became a hot topic in online news sites over the past year in Vietnam, where nearly 20 percent of the 86 million people are between 15 and 24 years old.

In one of the more serious cases, a 15-year-old boy in southern Da Lat city was stabbed to death by two other grade nine students, VnExpress news site reported. The motive for the killing was unclear.

There were nearly 1,600 cases of violence in and outside schools in the 2009-2010 academic year, according to Ministry of Education and Training figures cited by Lao Dong newspaper.

More than 2,400 students had been reprimanded for their acts while hundreds were temporarily suspended from school, it said.

The unrest stemmed from the students’ lack of “life skills, self-restraint and appropriate behaviour to solve minor and simple quarrels” the report said, citing the ministry.

Along with weaker parental supervision, young people are subjected to “rampant violent images” in the mass media, online games and films, Binh said.

But Vietnam lacks effective social organizations for helping to improve the situation, Toan said.

“I think we are now living in an irresponsible society, with people tending to stay away from community and public activities,” he said.

For 36-year-old mother Luu Thi Mai, proper parental care is the answer.

“I give her my best care, teaching her right from wrong, sending her to a good school with well-behaved students,” the office worker said while waiting for her daughter outside a public school in Hanoi.

But just in case of trouble, Mai said she still sends her 11-year-old girl to karate classes -- “not to attack others, but to know how to defend herself”.

Tattooing, the new teen thing
================================================

While adults consider tattoo an art and self-beautification, teenagers mostly get their body tattooed to imitate their peers, says Truong Nghiem, the owner of a tattoo shop on Hoang Van Thu Street in Ho Chi Minh City.

Many school students come to his shop because it is discreetly located and big shops may not serve them, he says.

Most youngsters get tattooed without informing their parents until the deed is done. Huong, a girl studying in a high school in District 3, says: “I thought about it very carefully for almost a year before I decided to get a tattoo. My mom didn’t like it, but since it was already done, there was no point in scolding me.”

There are exceptions, though. Nghiem was once surprised when a father brought his 14-year-old son for a tattoo. The man himself had a tattoo on his arm and thought it was no great deal for his son to have a small star on his arm too.

Sang of a high school in the city says: “Not all those who have tattoos are thugs or drug addicts. It’s different now. I want to have a tattoo just because it looks beautiful.”

The little sparrow tattoo on his shoulder is a sign not of rebellion but of his appreciation for a form of art, he says. He hopes to become a tattoo artist himself.

Pride vs prejudice

Nghiem, an experienced tattoo artist, says teenagers should consider carefully before getting a tattoo. Most teenagers choose simple images like words, stars, flowers, and zodiac symbols, but as soon as they get something a bit fancy, people will immediately switch to “judgment mode,” he warns.

Tien, a Vo Thi Sau High School alumnus, says: “Tattoos do look cool, but girls with tattoos are definitely ‘no’. Even if I happen to go out with a tattooed girl, I won’t take the relationship seriously.”

Despite the increasing popularity of tattooing, it is undeniable that most people still harbor a prejudice against tattooed teenage girls.

Whenever Nguyen Khuyen High School literature teacher Nguyen Thi Dan Thanh spots a student with a tattoo, she reminds them not to do anything they would regret later.

“Though I often tell my students to look at things from different perspectives, tattoos are just unacceptable. It’s inadvisable for boys to have tattoos, and it’s doubly so for girls.”

Some parents strongly disapprove of their children trying to assert themselves by tattooing.

“A perfectly plain body is most beautiful,” My, the owner of a fashion shop in District 1, says.

“I don’t see why people want to imprint these shapes on their body.” She recently took her child to a clinic on Nguyen Binh Khiem Street to get a tattoo removed.

A “second thoughts are best” tattoo like David Beckham’s costs around VND2 million

Infection risk

Dr Nguyen Thi Kim Oanh, a dermatologist at District 10’s Medical Center, says: “When it comes to tattooing, what concerns us most is the risk of infection. Whether it is done by machine or hand, if hygiene rules are not strictly observed, there is always a possibility of contracting HIV or hepatitis B, C.”

To ensure they do not transmit infections and diseases in the tattooing process, tattoo shops must follow strict sanitation and safety standards such as sterilizing tattooing equipment properly or using single-use needles, she says.

The tattoo ink should never be reused since there is a high risk of viruses finding their way into it, and the skin must be sterilized and cleaned before and after the process like for a surgery, she warns.

Dermatologists agree there are generally no side effects in tattooing but say since the ink is made of chemicals, precautions should be made to ensure it is safe and non-allergic.

Easy come, not easy go

Removing tattoos could be a tricky business. Oanh says: “If the ink does not go too deep, it will fade easily. But if it does, it is very difficult to be removed and will definitely leave scars.”

A complex tattoo may cost thousands of dollars and take days to complete

In the past common removal methods included cover-up, excision, dermabrasion, and the use of acid, heat (CO2 laser), and even salt. All of them cause great pain and leave ugly-looking scars on the skin.

A new method that promises scarless removal has been developed recently – Q-Switched lasers. However, it requires multiple sessions and the treatment process is painful.

Typically, the cost of removing a tattoo is much greater than creating it, and usually depends on size, color, and depth.

Tattoos are made with a small machine that has a needle in front and an ink cartridge in the back. The machine works just like a sewing machine, with the needle permeating ink beneath the skin. The tattooing process can last up to a few hours for a large tattoo, cause bleeding, and result in several days of pain.

How to make a tattoo:

- Locate and measure the tattoo area and draw a sample on paper or computer.

- Pick the desired ink color and prepare the ink.

- Sterilize tattoo equipment and the skin area to be tattooed.

- Start drawing the tattoo on the skin (for complicated ones, the drawing must be done many times, with the same sterilization process used each time)

- Apply medicine to prevent infection

Since tattooing involves injecting a needle through the skin, safety is still a great concern.

Teenages hire luxuries for show-off
==============================================

VietNamNet Bridge – Many teens are not afraid to pay several dozens of USD a day to hire luxurious items to brag to the world that they are rich and connoisseurs.

They can hire everything from clothes to bags, shoes, jewelry, scooters or cars with world famous brands as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Lacoste, Burberry, Moschino, etc, which usually only the rich can afford to buy.

With VND200,000 ($10), Phuong, a student, can hire a Chanel dress for a day. She said she is an addict of luxuries but she can’t afford to buy them. Her addiction is satisfied thanks to this special service. Sometimes she has to wait for a month to hire an item she likes.

Le, a new university graduate, said she often hires name brand dresses for important events. “I feel confident when I wear a name brand dress. I only have to pay several hundreds of thousands VND to get the looks of others. It is so cheap!”

While girls are interested in clothes and jewelry, boys are attracted by latest models of cell phones. For VND20,000-200,000 ($1-20) a day, they can hire a cell phone of all brands.

To have an expensive scooter as SH, Dylan, LX for a day, they have to pay VND300,000-500,000 ($15-25) and from VND400,000-900,000 ($20-45) for a normal car. If they want to have a Mercedes, they have to pay at least VND2 million ($200) a day.

This service was very hot during the lunar New Year holiday. Shops on Nghia Tan, Chua Boc, Giai Phong roads in Hanoi were out of products this Tet.

It is very easy to hire luxuries that cost thousands of US dollars by paying a deposit or giving the shop keeper an ID card. Customers have to compensate double or triple the value of the product if the hired items are damaged.

According to service providers, addicts of luxuries are diverse but most of them are teens. Hiring luxurious items has become the fashion but it is a worry for girls because sharing clothes may bring about infectious diseases.

State employees look for means of subsistence
================================================== =======

VietNamNet Bridge – They can’t use their expertise or their positions to earn extra money, many state employees have to lean on their families or do extra jobs to sustain their livelihood.

Manual labor

Mrs. H, a state employee at a statistic agency, has worked for over 20 years and earned nearly VND3 million of salary a month. Her husband has retired for five years due to poor health. With VND4 million ($200) a month (including VND1 million of retirement pension of Mrs. H’s husband), the four-member family faces deprivation when their two children entered secondary school.

Everyday, after leaving the office, Mrs. H hurriedly prepared dinner for her family and then made votive paper products at home, the job that her husband has done since he retired.

This extra job is not very hard. Mrs. H often worked until 11 pm to earn VND50,000-60,000 ($2-3) a day, which is sufficient to pay part of the expenditure for foods. The salary of VND4 million is paid for school fees and potential problems.

“Sometimes I questioned myself whether I can continue like this when my children enter high school and university. If they can enter university, we would be very happy but we would also worry because the price is on the rise. Salaries also increase but price increases are higher,” Mrs. H said. Mrs. H said that her family has never gone to a restaurant.

To sustain her family, Mrs. T from the National Center for Hydrometeorology has an extra job on the weekend: selling plastic bags to shops and markets. She earned from VND3.5-4 million a month from this job, equivalent to her and her husband’s salary.

T often bought rice, spices, detergent, etc. from the early of the month by her earning from selling plastic bags and salary was reserved for other tasks like weddings, funerals, drugs, bills, etc.

T recently did another extra job, transcribing interviews for researchers, at the price of VND30,000 ($1.5) for five A4 pages.

“This job is low paid but it is not hard and I can do it whenever I have free time,” T said.

However, whenever her family faced unexpected problems, especially when a family member is sick and has to go to hospital, Mrs. T has to ask for assistance from her parents and brothers and sisters.

Mistletoe

There are state employees who have worked for nearly ten years but they still have to live on their parents’ support. This is not surprising because VND2 million ($100) of salary is not enough to cover basic needs.

Ms. L, has worked at the Map Publishing House under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment for several years. “My parents paid for my four years at the university and until now they have to still support me. If my salary doesn’t increase, they may have to support me until I get married,” she complained.

There are families in which both the wife and husband are state employees their children are entirely supported by grandparents.

A state employee wrote on an online forum: “I and my husband work for state agencies and my family (with two children) can still sustain ourselves thanks to the assistance of my parents”.

“My salary (she has worked for 12 years) is enough to take my children to the bookstore several times a month and to buy some milk for them. My parents paid school fees for my children. The whole spending in my family is covered by my parents (they live with her parents-in-law). My younger brothers and sisters, who work for foreign-invested firms, sometime help us. It is shameful! I’m trying to find a solution because my parents can’t live forever to help us but I have not found a feasible way!”

On a popular online forum for parents, many members told their own stories when they have to live with modest salary of state employees. Most of them said that part of state employees who earn low salary and they don’t do extra jobs but they can survive because their wives or their husbands work for the private or foreign-owned sectors with high salaries or their parents are wealthy.

It is a tragedy if both the wife and the husband are state employees and their families are not well-off.

Though their salary is low, some state employees still have money to trade securities and real estate and with just one successful affair, they can ear as much as their salary in a dozen years. The capital for securities and estate trading comes from their rich families, not from their jobs.

VietNamNet asked a state employee why he doesn’t quit his job to do private business, he said that he needed an official position at a state agency because this position could help him a lot when he does other jobs.

Own house a mirage for most employees
===========================================

Ministry mulls national housing fund to assist low-income earners

Live a very strict, austere life. Save everything you can after working very, very hard. Do this for 25 years, and maybe, just maybe you will be able to buy your first home.

This is the reality for millions of people in the country.

For people whose monthly income is just several million dong, the largest sum they can put aside is roughly VND1 million per month, said Deputy Construction Minister Nguyen Tran Nam said. This kind of savings does not mean anything considering that the cheapest apartment in Hanoi and other large cities costs VND400 million (US$20,500).

“Nobody can buy a home in large cities if they only rely on salary income,” Nam said.

Vietnam ranks 100th in the world in terms of wealth, but 20th in terms of house prices, he added, highlighting a disparity that makes a dream home, just that, a dream, for many citizens.

Nguyen Manh Ha, director of the Construction Ministry’s Housing and Real Estate Market Management Department, said Vietnam has a house price to household income ratio of 24.5-26.6.

“This means it takes between 24.5 and 26.6 years for a Vietnamese to be able to buy a house providing they save all of their money for this,” Ha said. The ratio is too high compared to the world average of 3-4 years.

Vietnam ended its housing allocation system two decades ago, when it stopped granting apartments and small houses to state employees and workers and started making housing allowance a part of their salary package. The problem is that this portion is too small to be of any real use.

In 1993, for instance, the allowance was equal to 7.5 percent of the minimum monthly wage, or VND9,000. As the minimum wage has been raised to VND730,000 a month, the housing budget has also expanded, but to a mere VND54,750 per month ($2.80).

Nguyen Thanh Hai has been putting aside more than that. Hai and his wife, both working for government agencies in Hanoi, earn around VND8 million a month together. Out of this income they save VND2 million every month for a house.

But the rate at which their savings increases cannot keep pace with the increase in real estate prices. “The chance to own a home is now out of my reach,” Hai said. “Two years ago, we were only VND600 million short of a house, but now we need another VND1 billion.”

Thinking about what the future may hold for him, Hai said there is one thing he can be sure of – that he and his wife will have to keep living in a rented house.

Opaque market

Total housing area in Vietnam has expanded steadily, by around 86.8 million square meters last year, and many projects to develop housing for low-income urban residents have been launched. However, the Ministry of Construction has conceded that providing housing for low income citizens is a stiff challenge.

The trend of consistently soaring house prices has not eased in years, and Dang Hung Vo, former deputy minister of Natural Resources and Environment, said it was because the market was driven by speculators.

“The market is not transparent,” he said. “There is a group of people standing between developers and people with real housing demand and this group earns a lot of money from inflated house prices.”

When prices spiral out of control and far from the real value, the housing pressure grows exponentially, he said, stressing the need for more transparency in the real estate market.

In a bid to ease the problem, the Construction Ministry is mapping a 10-year plan that envisions, among other things, the launch of a national housing fund to which all employees in the country will contribute.

Contributors to the fund for 10- 15 years will be eligible to make purchases from social housing projects. If they choose not to, they will receive their money, with interest, at their retirement, just like a usual pension fund.

Deputy Construction Minister Nguyen Tran Nam said there are around nine million employees on official payroll records and a 1 percent contribution from them every month would amount to a fund large enough to finance more housing projects in the country.

Tourism flourishes during Tet 2011 holiday
================================================== =====

VietNamNet Bridge – More local and foreign tourists have taken inbound and outbound tours during the Tet (Lunar New Year) 2011 holiday compared to previous years.

The number of foreign visitors arriving in the central province of Thua Thien Hue reached 50,000, mostly from Europe, Japan and Thailand, an increase of about 20,000 over previous years.

Local officials said that numerous cultural festivals held in Hue during Tet have attracted a large number of visitors. They said the festival was a harbinger for many other cultural events to be held in the province this year in order to welcome the National Tourism Year set to be celebrated in 2012.

All historical relics in Hue remained open to visitors free of charge from February 3-5 (Jan 1 - 3 on the lunar calendar).

Da Lat welcomed roughly 75,000 tourists during this Tet holiday, with most hotels and guesthouses in the Central Highlands city reporting 80 per cent occupancy.

In Ha Noi, about 1,027 passengers on 109 international flights arrived at the Noi Bai International Airport from February 3 - 5, mostly European tourists and Viet kieu (Vietnamese overseas) from many countries, according to the airport's Customs Department.

Besides, about 8,000 passengers on 82 flights departed from Noi Bai Airport to other countries during the holiday.

The first international flight carrying 184 tourist passengers from Hong Kong arrived at the Da Nang International Airport on the second day of Tet.

They came on a 5-day tour offering relaxing stays at high-end resorts and hotels, as well as visits to many tourist sites like the Son Tra peninsula, Ngu Hanh Son Mountain and many world heritage sites in Hue and Hoi An towns.

The Sebourn Pride carrying 200 passengers from UK, France, Germany, America also arrived at the Tien Sa Port in Da Nang on the second day of Tet.

Meanwhile, thousands of tourists flocked to the Kim Lien historical site in the eponymous commune, Nam Dan District, in the central province of Nghe An.

The site's management board mobilised more staff to offer better services during Tet to deal with the increase in number of visitors during the festive season.

The site, which has normal working hours of 7:30am till 5pm, was opened even earlier until late in the night to serve a large number of visitors on the first and second days of Tet, the board said.

Travel firms do well

The surge in Tet festival tourism saw HCM City-based Viettravel company serve 18,000 - 20,000 customers, a soar of 40 per cent over the same period last year.

Viettravel mobilised an unprecedented 300 tourist guides to serve customers during this Tet holiday.

Meanwhile, the Saigontourist company in HCM City attracted 10,000 customers to join 130 domestic tours, an increase of 40 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Saigontourist also welcomed and served 9,000 tourists from America, Germany, UK, Russia, France, Japan and China on this occasion.

Foreign visitors to Vietnam rise sharply during Tet
================================================== =====
VietNamNet Bridge – The Noi Bai International Airport received over 1,000 foreign holidaymakers during the first three days of the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival, according to the airport's Border Customs Agency.

Travelers were mostly from Europe and overseas Vietnamese who visited their homeland for the Tet holiday.

On the occasion, the airport's 82 flights brought nearly 8,000 visitors to countries and territories worldwide.

Meanwhile, the number of tourists to Hue on these days increased sharply, reaching about 50,000, some 20,000 higher than last year.

A large number of arrivals came from European countries, Japan and Thailand.

The ancient capital city celebrated the Tet festival with a wide range of activities and festivals launched in different localities, opening an array of this year's cultural, sports and tourism events to welcome the National Tourism Year to be organised in the city in 2012.

Tourism destinations of the Hue's relic site opened for free during the first three days of the Lunar New Year.

Flower Street attracts 800,000 residents, visitors

The HCM City's annual Nguyen Hue Flower Street attracted nearly 800,000 local and foreign visitors during the Tet holiday (Lunar New Year), organisers said.

After it opened on January 31 (December 28 in the lunar calendar), the flower street welcomed more than 100,000 city residents as well as visitors from neighbouring provinces and foreign countries each day, said Tran Hung Viet, deputy general director of Saigontourist and head of the 2011 Tet Festival organisation board.

This year's flower street, in its eighth annual edition, was themed Tam Cao Moi (New Heights), reflecting the city's aspiration to post greater socio-economic achievements.

Apart from floral bonanza in different spring themes, highlights this year included the 5m-high Cau Mua (Worshipping for Good Crops) Flower Tower that visitors could climb and get an overview of the whole street.

The flower street was closed for clearing on Sunday and reopened to traffic on February 7.

A quiet beach resort somewhere outside HCMC.......

Mui Ne - a dream resort
======================================

As my niece Yogita was expecting her friend Anu to arrive from Singapore during the Tet holidays, she searched for the nearest place to take a break during Tet and finally settled on Mui Ne.

The websites on Mui Ne had loads of offers, but every inquiry was returned with a polite refusal ‘closed for Tet’. The hotels that looked inviting and tempting with beach and water sport activities were full for the entire Tet season. Finally we managed to find a wonderful website of the Sealink country club resort. We were able to get a large family suite for the three of us. The next step was how to get there. Again the website of Sinh café popped up and off we trotted to their office on De Tham Street and booked a comfortable car along with a Vietnamese guide.

Next day at 5am we left for Mui Ne and made the journey there in less than 5 hours. We were told that it normally takes less time but because of the Tet holiday season there was excessive traffic heading out of HCMC.

The Sealinks hotel came as a delightful surprise. Lovely laid out gardens, open spaces, three large pools, a golf course and cheerful rooms. The staff was warm and welcoming and as soon as we had checked into our suite we headed straight to the dining room for a well laid out buffet lunch. Since I am a vegetarian I am constantly worried if I would get anything to eat. Knowing Mui Ne to be a beach resort I was warned in HCMC by my colleagues that I would have to turn into a fishetarian to survive there!

However, the spread was so well planned that it could have been laid out for vegetarians as well. The charming stewardess Ms Vung, still added an extra delicious pasta dish with broccoli especially for me even though I found the buffet lunch more than sufficient.

We headed to the white dunes after lunch and sand dune gliding which was fun. We stopped briefly on the way to see the ancient Cham temples. Later in the evening we strolled along the very happening Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street, browsing at shops and taking in the mood of the holiday crowd. Of course, since we had come to a beach resort we wanted to walk on a beach! So we asked our guide to drive us to a beach. He decided to take us to a beach which was full of boats of fishermen getting ready to take their boats to sea. We were able to take some stunning pictures of the boats and the setting sun. We walked along the beach which we found was full of sea shells that we could not avoid walking on them. We even collected some to bring back home. As we were walking on the beach we saw a charming Vietnamese woman making hot Banh Khot. That was such an irresistible sight that we had to stop in her little shop and eat some. I even ate some with fish sauce! They were so delicious, I forgot I was a vegetarian!

We stopped at an Indian restaurant for dinner and at 10.30 at night could not refuse the temptation of a foot massage. The street was so alive well into mid night!

The next morning we all relaxed in the lovely waters of the hotel pool, had a sumptuous breakfast laid out in the banquet hall of the hotel and soon checked out of the hotel as we had planned a visit to the Takou Mountain before retuning to HCMC. We went to the mountain by cable car which was quite an adventure and as the Buddha statue on the top of the mountain is further away we had to walk some distance. It was 4 in the evening by the time we reached the cable car post for our return trip down the hill. Much to our dismay there was a crowd of about 200 people already waiting in queue for their turn. That would have been quite a wait but the local police was so helpful, they saw to it that the young and boisterous crowd did not break the line and we finally reached the base by 5pm. Knowing how late it was getting we headed straight back to HCMC. It was a Saturday evening and fortunately the roads were clear and our return journey only took us 4 hours without a stop.

Twelve dead after Vietnam tour boat sinks

HANOI: Twelve people, most of them foreign tourists, died Thursday when their tour boat sank in Vietnam's famed Halong Bay, an official said.

Some survivors were plucked from the water by local fishermen following the pre-dawn disaster at one of the country's most popular tourist destinations, renowned for its many limestone towers.

"We have determined that 12 people died including 10 foreigners and two Vietnamese," said Vu Van Thin, a senior official with the Quang Ninh province People's Committee, the local government.

He said the Vietnamese victims included a tourist and an interpreter for the foreign visitors, whose nationalities had not yet been confirmed.

"According to our initial information part of the boat suddenly broke," but bad weather was not to blame, Thin told AFP.

Nine tourists and six crew survived the accident, Thin said.

The boat was carrying a total of 19 foreign visitors and two Vietnamese at the time, said Doan Manh Linh, assistant director at Quang Ninh's Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The Dan Tri news website quoted Do Thong, vice-president of the People's Committee, as saying the foreigners came from a variety of Western countries.

About 10 of them were rescued at around 0200 GMT Thursday and taken to hospital, he said.

Dan Tri said the accident occurred just before dawn.

Many Halong Bay tour boats have dining facilities and cabins for tourists to spend the night on the waters.

Halong Bay, located in the Gulf of Tonkin about 160 kilometres (100 miles) east of the capital Hanoi, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994.

Its 1,600 islands and islets form a spectacular seascape of mostly uninhabited limestone pillars made famous by the 1992 French movie "Indochine".

It is not the first time disaster has struck at the popular tourist attraction.

In September 2009 three foreign tourists -- two from Britain and one from France -- died along with their local guide when their vessel overturned during heavy rain on the bay.

Official data show that in the first 10 months of last year more than 2.3 million tourists visited Halong Bay, roughly evenly split between local visitors and foreigners, with almost 200,000 boat trips during the period.
