no no, its not VN food that is the culprit.. just the Pho and the Bun only... they used a lot of perservatives so that they can mass produce a lot at a go and keep long long to sell over many days! The rest of the VN food has other issues... long story...

Anyway, i usually eat at home but if have to eat outside, i will eat at KFC. At most twice a week i eat at vietnamese restaurants outside.

bloody hell...me eat alot of pho but not bo...:p

Since we are taking abt VN food, i have a news article to contribute ......

Love at first bite
=====================

I don’t look like it, but my stomach is very Vietnamese. I’ve been eating the cuisine all my adult life. Everyone talks about how healthy Vietnamese food is. I recently had some medical tests on my insides – always a good idea as you become older – which all turned out negative. My doctor says I will live to at least 80 years old! I’ve been eating very well.

They say food is the way to a man’s heart. I can still remember the exact dish my future wife prepared at her Mekong Delta home many years ago when I came to ask her father’s permission to marry. Crispy-fried chicken wings on a watercress salad surrounded by sliced tomato and onion with a dressing of oil, vinegar and ground pepper and a dipping sauce of soya & freshly-chopped chilli. Delicious!

That did the trick. After refusing me for over a year, her father finally agreed. And when we married a few months later, we even brought four fat chickens we raised in our tiny house off today’s Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street for the home-made wedding banquet. My mother-in-law was a very good cook – and teacher.

This was during the war and I had already been in Vietnam for several years before meeting the lovely Kim-Dung. From the moment I arrived as a student from Hong Kong by ship up the Saigon River in early 1964, I was drawn to Vietnamese food. I stayed with university students and even today the memory of my very first “pho” – and the wonderful smell of coriander – returns every time I drive past that street corner. When a young medical student named Miss Hoa invited me for dinner, I watched in fascination as she deep-fried northern-style “cha gio” or “nem” and then delicately cut them into pieces with giant scissors. Then came the wrappings of lettuce, mint and other fresh vegetables dipped in a special “nuoc mam” sauce. I was well and truly “properly introduced” to Vietnamese food.

And then as a young American aid worker working in the Mekong Delta, I always ate Vietnamese-style meals at home and frequented local eating houses, noodle stands and food stalls. For breakfast, omelettes of “cha lua,” a finely-minced pork sausage or “xiu mai,” those wonderful meat dumplings in tomato sauce and at mid-morning a “pho” or “hu tieu.” Sadly, most Americans, especially the military, shied away from Vietnamese food and I would get upset at their constant jokes about “nuoc mam,” or fish sauce. My stomach became so Vietnamese that I only became sick eating the heavy and often greasy food the Americans preferred.

With only a couple exceptions, there was nothing I would not eat – or try once. One was “sau rieng,” or durian. Like many foreigners, probably Vietnamese too, the strong smell put me off for years – until we married and someone said the fruit was an aphrodisiac. I am not sure about that but I was quickly hooked onto its wonderful texture and flavour. (Now, I get upset about durian jokes too!)

The other exception was – and still is - dog meat because I love dogs too much as pets. Snake, eel, turtle, frog, rat, pigeon & quail. No problems. Even today, I am often asked by Vietnamese if I eat “mam,” or heavily-salted and pungent fermented fish and shrimp. Why, of course, I do! Is that unusual? (But I also know that too much mam is bad for your high blood pressure.)

Unlike today’s Ho Chi Minh City, former Saigon had almost no Vietnamese restaurants before 1975, but mostly French and Chinese. And so when I moved there as a journalist, many of my foreigner colleagues’ first experience with Vietnamese food was at our home. Typically, we served southern-style “cha gio” and a second entrée like “bo cuon,” or skewered beef, and a large pot of “cari ga,” or red chicken curry, with fried rice or bread rolls. After all Kim-Dung’s hard work, the food disappeared in minutes. Other times, we shared typical southern meals with smaller groups of friends. But watching how much these outsiders enjoyed the cuisine I was eating normally every day, I began to fantasize about one day opening my own Vietnamese restaurant.

(To be continued)

Police smash rings trafficking girls to Singapore, China

Ministry of Public Security police yesterday said they had busted many rings trafficking women abroad, including one that sent 50 women to Singapore. They have arrested 15 people and rescued 17 girls.

The most notable in these rings was one led by Tran Van Tam, 37, and Nguyen Loan Thach, 27, who were seized at Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City while carrying out procedures to send 6 girls to Singapore.

This was just one of the many trafficking cases committed by the ring, which had sent a total of 50 women to Singapore with an aim of forcing them to work as prostitutes.

Tam and Thach confessed to the police that they lured those girls to Singapore to seek jobs but in fact they wanted to sell them to brothels.

The ministry said it had coordinated with the Vietnam Interpol Office and police departments of 13 provinces and cities to uncover the large-scale ring.

The ring had have trafficked about 50 girls from Tay Ninh and some other southern provinces to Singapore, police said.

Another leading trafficking ring was led by Pham Thi Thu Huyen and Nguyen Thi Chin, who lured young and beautiful girls to the northern border province of Quang Ninh and then took them to China to sell them to whorehouses.

Those girls are from Quang Ninh, Nam Dinh, Hai Phong, and Lam Dong provinces, police said.

The police have prosecuted 15 people involved in the trafficking rings and saved 17 girls.

Vietnam’s famous wine brands
===============================================
VietNamNet Bridge – Van village, Sapa’s tao meo (apple), Bau Da, Go Den wine have been famous throughout the country for their special tastes and characteristics.

Let’s discover four famous wine brands in Vietnam with VietNamNet Bridge.

Tao meo wine – Sapa’s essence

Coming to Sapa, a famous tourist town in Lao Cai province, visitors will not only be attracted by its fanciful beauty, but go into ectasy by its tao meo wine.

In Sapa, tao meo trees grow up on the Hoang Lien Son mountain range as a gift from the mother nature.

This is the kind of popular wine and the taste is very delicious. “Tao Meo” has enough sweet, bitter and acrid. It is a drug to lower blood pressure, lower blood fat, blood vessels, coronary vasodilation, improves heart muscle operation.

Because of the good effects, “Tao Meo” is soaked very carefully and stored for processing into pure alcohol. At first, visitors seemingly enjoy a carbonated beverage, but they can passionate when eating more and more.

The drink is made from fresh “Tao Meo”. The tree matures flowering white in late spring (May 3, 4) and gives fruit in the fall. In August, September, November, Sapa market will sell fresh fruit. The fruit will be peeled, washed to avoid bitterness and cut to pick corn. Finally, the fruit will be put into glass bottle with sugar.

The drink has “flavor mountains,” very nice brown color. Since it is good and an effective treatment, visitors who come here also try to buy a bottle of wine.

Tao meo is also used as herbal medicine to lower blood pressure, cholesterol and it is good for cardiovascular operations. It is called “fruit of love” or “bitter fruit”, because it contains fragrances of life.

Van village’s wine

The "Lang Van" wine made at Van Village, of Van Ha Commune in Bac Giang Province’s Viet Yen District. 60km from Hanoi and is renowned as Vietnam’s outstanding home-made brew.

The local people regard it as an indispensable beverage for festivals and New Year celebrations or as an offering. The wine is produced from high-quality fragrant glutinous rice grown in the fields of Van Xa Village, Van Ha Commune, Viet Yen District, combined with traditional brewer’s yeast made of rare Chinese medicinal herbs, and the wine cooking art handed down for generations.

In the past, Lang Van’s wine was served at royal banquets.

Bau Da wine

Bau Da wine is a famous specialty of Bau Da village in the central province of Binh Dinh.

The name of Bau Da originated from Cu Lam village’s Bau Da in An Nhon district’s Nhon Loc commune, 22km from Quy Nhon city.

This wine is entirely made by hand.

It is said that Bau Da wine makes drinkers have sensations of fire and ice. As a matter of fact, get a drop of wine on your skin, and you will get a chilly feeling.

Pour this wine from a height, to hear the marvelous sound of wine splashing. Then let the glass of wine spread its fragrance through the atmosphere for a moment before sipping it and feeling it foam around in the mouth.

Locals say that northern and southern tourists treated to Bau Da wine have said it is better than Johnny Walker brandy.

It is made of newly-harvested rice grains and special water, which make it transparent, and then distilled with straw and husk-fired heat.

However, the most attractive aspect of Bau Da wine is that intimate friends prefer to sit cross-legged on the floor on a moonlit night to both enjoy wine and recitals.

Go Den wine

This kind of wine appeared in the French-rule period in the southern province of Long An.

At that time French colonists banned Vietnamese from processing wine, to hold the exclusive right to supply wine to the local market. However, the wine they provided was unsuitable to the Vietnamese taste, so people illegally processed their own wine, including Go Den wine.

Go Den wine is processed by glutinous rice and herbal ferment. This wine is famous for its limpidness.

English skills remain elusive for graduates
=============================================
Talking to foreigners is a good way to improve English

Students say “no” to foreign language study branches
================================================== =======
VietNamNet Bridge – Foreign language faculties of many universities have been fallen into the “living death” because they do not get enough students.

Most universities and junior colleges have released reports about the numbers of students registering to take entrance exams to the schools, which show that very few students have registered to study foreign languages, especially French, Chinese and Russian.

The low competition ratio of 1/0.2

The HCM City University of Education plans to enroll 40 students for every foreign language major. However, it has received 24 registrations for the Russian-English bilingual major, 37 registrations for French and 45 applications for Chinese teaching majors.

Non-pedagogical study branches have also received very few applications. French language department, for example, has received 54 applications while it plans to enroll 50 students, Chinese language has received 93 applications while it plans to enroll 110 students, while the figures for Chinese language are 108 and 100, respectively. Especially, only eight students have registered to study Russia-English languages, while the study branch offers 50 seats.

As such, the competition ratios of the majors are very low, between 1/0.2 and 1/1.1 (one student has to compete with 0.2 or 1.1 other students to obtain a seat at the university).

The HCM City University of Social Sciences and Humanity has also reported that the lowest competition ratios belong to foreign language majors. Spanish and philology, for example, have got 66 applications, while it plans to enroll 50, German philology has got 79, while it plans to enroll 40. The figures are 149 and 90, respectively, for French philology

Local and regional schools are facing the same situation. The Can Tho University, for example, has got 29 applications only, while it needs 35 for the French language major. It has got 86 applications, while it needs 60 for English language. At the Foreign Language University under the Da Nang University, French teaching major has got 11 applications, Chinese teaching 26, Russian language 37, while Thai language 15, while the school plans to enroll 35 students for each major.

Why do students turn their back on foreign language studies?

Trinh Minh Huyen, Deputy President of the Ton Duc Thang University, said that there are only several schools training bachelors in Chinese, but the schools still do not receive many applications from students. Ton Duc Thang, for example, has got 96 applications, while it plans to accept 60 students.

Huyen admitted that Chinese language proves to be the study branch which finds it most difficult to enroll students, even though there have been more opportunities for jobs recently, since more Taiwanese and Chinese companies come to Vietnam to do business and seek the employees who can speak Chinese.

Huyen said that Vietnamese students keep indifferent to Chinese language, because this is really a difficult subject to learn. Besides, they believe that they would have more job opportunities with English, rather than Chinese. Therefore, every year, the school has to seek students for Chinese faculty from the ones, who fail the entrance exams to prestigious schools (under the current laws, those students, who fail the exams to registered schools, can go studying at other schools if they have enough marks from the exams as required by the other schools)

According to Ta Quang Lam, Deputy Head of the Training Division of the HCM City University of Education, students now turn their back to foreign language majors because they cannot see many job opportunities. Most of the students, graduating French language majors, for example, have to seek jobs in the tourism sector, while Russian language graduates have to seek jobs in the oil and gas industry.

Lam went on to say that it is really alarming that schools cannot maintain these study branches. “The society still needs the people with foreign language skills. Where to find qualified people if schools stop training?” he said.

Kids gearing up for competitions for first grade
================================================== ====

VietNamNet Bridge – A lot of children do not have a “summer holiday” in the true sense of the word, because they have to learn hard to prepare for the exams to enter the first grade of prestigious schools.

Primary school entrance exam as stressful as university entrance exam

About ten private primary schools in Hanoi plan to organize exams to enroll students for the 2011-2012 academic year in order to choose the best students for the schools.

The number of students registering to study at the schools is clearly big, while the number of students the schools plan to enroll is limited. The Experimental Primary School, for example, plans to enroll 180 students for the first grade, but 600 students have registered to take the school entrance exam, which means that 420 students will be disqualified.

The Doan Thi Diem Primary School plans to enroll 400 students this year, but 900 students have registered to study at the school so far. Headmaster of the school, Nguyen Thi Hien said last year, the school enrolled 500 students, while there were 1600 applications. She thinks that the number of students registering to take the exam to the school, to be held on May28, will be the same with the last year.

The Le Quy Don Primary School has also reported that it is seeking 360 students for the first grade, while the number of registrations has been several times higher.

While other primary schools are still receiving applications from students, the Nguyen Sieu Primary School organized the exam already. Children were asked to spend a whole day at the school. They had to attend the tests which aim to find out student’s capability in language, mathematical thinking, English skills, and the ability to observe, remember, and express ideas. Also, they also had to go through the health examination. Meanwhile, the members of the jury board also gave marks to every student when they watched the students eating, sleeping and playing at the school.

A parent commented that the exam organized by the Nguyen Sieu School is as difficult as the contest to find out the “queen of the beauty”.

Minh, who has a daughter attending the school entrance exams on April 23 and 24, said that with the competition ratio of 1/5 (one student has to compete with other five in order to obtain a seat at the school), the primary school entrance exam is as stressful as the university entrance exam.

Gearing up for preparing for exams

A lot of students have failed to enter Nguyen Sieu Primary School. However, the exam results cannot discourage their parents. “Better luck next time”, a parent said, adding that his son will attend the exams to four other schools.

Another parent also said that her daughter will have to take many other exams to other primary schools, while she will only make decision about which school the girl will go to after she receives the exams results.

Parents have set up an ambitious goal for their children that the children need to pass the exams to the prestigious schools at any costs. Therefore, right after Tet holiday, many children have begun the difficult period of preparing for the primary school entrance exams.

A mother said that her child still has to learn even on holidays, but has to learn hard: solving the questions raised at the previous year’s exams, practicing writing and English skills.

My, who lives in Cau Giay District in Hanoi, related that her daughter goes to the exam preparation classes opened by some primary schools and she has to pay 3-4 million dong for the classes since February 2011. Besides this, the daughter is also learning with a private tutor, who is helping the girl practice writing.

Meanwhile, psychologists have pointed out that it is really a bad thing to put students under a hard pressure when they are still small. A woman related that her daughter feels ashamed because she failed to enter Nguyen Sieu School, because she was light in weight (18 kilos). Meanwhile, a father said that his boy dare not take other exams after he failed the exam to Nguyen Sieu School, because he thinks he is not capable enough to go to school.

Vietnamese body language and what it means
================================================== =====

Angela SchonbergHaving lived in Vietnam for seven months now, I have to say I have learned a lot, especially, in the form of communication. With differences in language and customs I find myself having trouble even in the most simple of interactions.

In situations, mainly at a restaurant or a market, I tend to overcompensate my lack of verbal communication with hand motions. Most of the time, this works out. Unfortunately, just like spoken language, hand signals and body language have different meanings and have the ability to offend people. If you find yourself in Vietnam attempting to non-verbally communicate, here are a few things I have learned that could help you not send the wrong message.

When trying to get someone to come to you, let’s say a waitress at a restaurant, do not point your finger and flex it toward your body as we do in America. If you use this method to beckon a Vietnamese local they may get upset. This is because this is how you call for an animal or a small child. Furthermore, beckoning signifies that that person has a lower class than you, so it can be very upsetting to older Vietnamese. Instead, keep your palm down and flex your entire hand, this will keep everyone happy. With practice I have come to break this miscommunication.

I was recently attending a concert taking pictures of some friends, when I asked them to pose for the camera they stuck up their middle finger. I thought they were trying to ruin the picture because in America this is the most offensive hand signal that can be made. Commonly used by angry drivers it is a way to tell another person off.

In Vietnam, however, this is not the case. The middle finger is simply another counting number. The middle finger and index finger to them coordinate by taking turns as the number one. Commonly, Vietnamese people point to things and ask for one item of something by putting up their middle fingers. So, if you see a Vietnamese person giving you the finger, they likely have no idea they could be offending you.

Many times sitting on the side of the street, I have found myself approached by people selling things that I do not want to buy. When I moved to Vietnam, I would shake my head “no, thank you” and persistent sellers would continue to test my patience. Thanks to friendly observation, I quickly learned that unlike America, where a left to right shake of the head means no, the Vietnamese use a hand motion to communicate the word no. Using your open hand, palm up, simply twist it back and forth and the salesperson will get the message. While shopping, I’ve even received shopkeepers giving me two hands, when they don’t agree on selling me something for the price I ask.

Learning my way around this city has been an eventful feat in itself. One time I told one of my Vietnamese friends to “wish me luck” as I had to cross downtown during rush hour. Subconsciously, I simultaneously, crossed my fingers when saying this. My friend stopped me and asked, “Why did you cross your fingers?” I explained to her that in America crossing your fingers is a sign of good luck. We sometimes even cross our fingers for luck when we’re waiting for good news or the results of a test.

After repeating this to her, she laughed and continued to explain to me that in Vietnam, this is not the case. She told me that crossing your fingers is considered a rude, and disrespectful gesture that refers to part of the female anatomy. After learning this I was thankful she told me before I upset any other locals around me.

Public displays of affection between a man and a woman, such as holding hands or kissing, are generally accepted in the western world, and can seemingly go unnoticed. But while in Vietnam, I tend to notice less co-ed displays of affection. More often than not I will see girls and, or, older women holding hands or linking arms with their girl friends.

While most Vietnamese realize that westerners have different behaviors in public, and may not care if you and your significant other hold hands, kissing will still likely cause offense. Personally, this does not bother me, because I have never been a big fan of public displays of affection.

This brings me to my last gesture, the crossing of the arms. Back home when I am talking to someone with their arms crossed I tend to think they are mad at me or are trying to cover something up. However, I have learned that if you’re speaking to your Vietnamese friend and they cross their arms you may think the same, but fear not. The act of crossing your arms also has a different meaning in Vietnam. Instead of something that is done when someone is upset, here crossing your arms is considered a sign of respect.

Remember, communicating in Vietnam, especially when you don’t speak the language, is difficult for most westerners. But, if you remember these non-verbal differences at least you can save yourself some embarrassment and keep the inadvertent offending at a minimum.

Even the taxi drivers cheated, let alone the WLs :D

Taken for a ride
========================

Illegal taxis and aggressive vendors give tourists a rude welcome to Vietnam

Last week, Rasnita Mohd Rasid and her friend took their longest taxi ride.

In terms of geographical distance, it was not too long, as Rasid and her friend discovered when they took the return journey on the same route in another taxi.

From Tan Son Nhat International Airport to Ben Thanh Market, the taxi driver charged them VND150,000 (US$7.3), which is when the enormity of the swindle they were victims of really sank in.

The taxi driver who took them from the market to the airport had demanded $400 (more than VND8 million plus another 300 Malaysian Ringgit ($98.6)) and Rasid had ended up paying VND4 million, almost $200.

Worse still, they had been dropped far outside the airport in the rain, and made to walk after paying a colossal sum.

On May 13, three days after this incident, Rasid, a journalist with the New Straits Times newspaper in Malaysia – went to the office of the Mai Linh Taxi Company to lodge a complaint because the taxi that had cheated her was labeled the “M.Taxi Group.”

Officials of the Mai Linh Taxi immediately recognized that the cab she took was an illegal one that imitates the company’s brand.

The company took her to Ben Thanh Market, where Rasnita saw the exact car that she had taken, with license plate 51V-0160. The same driver, far from being frightened, managed to issue a few threats to the group before fleeing.

Do Kien Dat, an executive with the Mai Linh Group, said there have been a number of unlicensed taxis imitating the company’s brand waiting for passengers outside the Notre Dame Cathedral, Ben Thanh Market, Bach Dang Port and a few other places.

He said the fake taxis were still around despite the company cooperating with the Transport Department and traffic police to tackle the issue.

Rasid’s case is not an isolated incident, according to several members of a team of volunteers assigned to assist tourists. Taxi fraud and other scams and annoyances that tourists are being subjected to have assumed serious proportions, they say.

New tricks

Tran Duy Nguyen of HCMC Voluntary Youth Force’s community service unit said fraud committed by taxi drivers and vendors have increased over the past several months.

Nguyen’s unit, which manages the green-shirt tourist security force, has witnessed many cases of foreign tourists being cheated by unlicensed taxi drivers.

“Taking a detour to increase the fare is an old trick. Now they carry passengers straight to their destination but snatch some high value banknotes from their open wallet, when foreigners are not familiar with local currency and calculating,” he said.

“Sometimes, they refuse to give back change or just close the door and drive away,” he added.

On March 18, a foreign tourist was charged VND300,000 ($14.5) after taking a taxi from the War Remnants Museum in District 3 to the Independence Palace in District 1, which is only two kilometers away. The passenger saw the meter indicating VND30,000 and asked a nearby volunteer for help.

In another case, an unlicensed taxi charged a foreign tourist VND200,000 for driving from Tao Dan Park in District 1 to the Rex Hotel in downtown HCMC, three kilometers away. The hapless tourist should have been charged not more than VND40,000, some taxi drivers told Thanh Nien Weekly.

Nguyen said his unit had recorded many similar cases, but their force is thin and cannot prevent all foreign tourists from being fleeced.

According to a recent report that Nguyen’s unit sent to the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, there have been many cases when foreign tourists are hassled and cheated by street vendors. Even tourist security officials have been threatened by the vendors, the report said.

A travel agent director in HCMC said there has been a reduction in the number of Japanese tourists over the past years because of badgering vendors.

He said some vendors have followed Japanese tourists to their hotels or sightseeing destinations to sell poor quality souvenirs. Japanese tourists have become aware of the issue and these vendors now shifted their attention to tourists from Malaysia, Indonesia and Russia, he added.

A tourist guide said many tourists from France, Australia, US, Japan and South Korea have been told by other tourists from their countries not to buy souvenirs in Vietnam to avoid being victimized by street vendors.

Some vendors pretend to invite tourists to buy a souvenir, contrive to have it drop to the ground to ignite a quarrel and insist on compensation, another tourist guide said.

Lax management

An official from HCMC Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said illegal taxis and vendors who harass visitors have become a headache for the department.

“Because we are understaffed, the department’s inspectors rely on the voluntary youth force to protect tourists from such scams,” the official said.

She said many tourists now looked to the Internet for useful tips before visiting another country, including Vietnam, to avoid falling prey to such ploys and fully enjoy the trip.

On several forums about Vietnam, international tourists have warned against unlicensed taxis like Taxi Meter, Taxi Vinamet and Meter Taxi, she said.

One entry on virtualtourist.com noted that there were a lot of postings about taxis in HCMC that provided “sufficient” information to protect oneself. “This happens all over the world not just in HCMC,” the entry said.

On March 11, a Japanese tourist took an illegal taxi from outside the Ben Thanh Market to the airport. The car suddenly stopped and parked on the side of the road before it reached the airport.

“I was confused and tried to make him drive to the airport since I had little time to check-in. The driver, who I realized was a criminal, refused. I then gave him a VND500,000 bill and expected to get change back. The meter showed VND84,500 but he made it out to be VND845,000,” the tourist wrote in his entry.

“We got into a loud discussion and I tried to get out of the car, but the doors were locked... He shouted about the VND840,000 and finally I had to give him $20 more to make him open the door, so I could get out,” the entry said.

Peter Murray, who has been in Vietnam for 18 years, blamed the increasing scams on lax management by local authorities.

“For years the press has said that unlicensed cabs in Pham Ngu Lao and outside Ben Thanh Market are illegal. So why are they still there? Someone is clearly getting paid off to allow them to stay - so someone higher up should stop it,” he told Thanh Nien Weekly.

“There could be a taxi counter at the airport where drivers are guaranteed the going rate for an agreed destination, for example, VND80,000 to District 1, VND100,000 to Binh Thanh District, etc., and the passenger buys that token, and the driver does not get the money until they claim it at the airport.”

The 6 million dong taxi ride arouses people’s indignation
================================================== =======

VietNamNet Bridge – The information about the exorbitant taxi ride, the shipwreck cases and the trouble at the Noi Bai International Airport which occurred recently; all have aroused the indignation from people, who have called on stopping the problems, to polish Vietnam’s images in the eyes of foreign travelers.

On May 13, Mai Linh taxi firm organized a meeting with three Malaysian travelers to clarify the issue relating to the “exorbitant taxi ride”. Prior to that, the three travelers came directly to Mai Linh’s headquarters to complain about the overly high and unreasonable taxi fees.

Nasniya Mohd Taib, one of the three clients, said that at 7 am of May 10, they caught a taxi with logo M.taxi Group and telephone number 08.39620620 to go from the Ben Thanh Market to the Tan Son Nhat Airport. When they arrived, the taxi driver forced them to pay four million Vietnam dong and 300 Ringgit (about 2 million dong), or six million dong in total. Meanwhile, the taxi ride actually costs 150,000 dong.

Nguyen Tuan Sinh, Chair of the Trade Union of Mai Linh Group, said that after receiving the complaint, security officers of the group and the three travelers came to the Ben Thanh Market area and discovered that this was a taxi which counterfeited the Mai Linh brand.

When the Mai Linh Group’s officers and the three travelers took pictures of the taxi, the taxi driver of the car with the number plate 52V-0160, the one that carried the three Malaysian travelers, tried to assault the people

Ms Nasniya Mohd Taib said that one of the members of the tourist group was a journalist, and he wanted to clarify the issue. The Ben Thanh Market is a well known tourism site, and any bad information would badly affect the tourism industry.

Nguyen Ngoc Hieu from Mai Linh Group said that more and more travelers have complained about the taxis that counterfeit the Mai Linh brand. Prior to that, many travelers, including foreign ones, also came and complained about overly high taxi fees.

Manh Tien, a reader of Saigon Tiep Thi, related that he once took a counterfeit taxi and he was asked to pay the fee which was higher than 30 percent over the normal rate. “I think the taxi driver did not dare to ask for more money, because I am a Vietnamese. However, I think that government agencies need to take actions immediately to stop the problem,” he wrote to the editorial board.

According to the representative from Mai Linh Group, there are a lot of counterfeit taxis which run mostly in the Ben Thanh Market area, Bach Dang station and the Notre Dame Cathedral. Especially, actual Mail Linh taxi drivers do not dare to go to the areas to receive travelers because they have been hindered by the counterfeit taxi drivers.

He said that in order to avoid counterfeit taxis, travelers should pay attention to the uniform of taxi drivers, the logo and telephone number on taxi cars.

The information about the exorbitant taxi ride has aroused indignation among Vietnamese people, who have called on to take drastic measures to stop the problem, or Vietnam will no longer be considered as an attractive destination in the eyes of foreign tourists.

“My foreign friends have warned that if the problem cannot be settled, no one would return to Vietnam any more,” Dang Nhat Vy, a reader, said.

“What do foreign travelers think about Vietnam? It’s to blame government agencies on the problem,” wrote Nam Thien to the editorial board.

“Why don’t relevant agencies try to settle the problem?”, a reader wrote from Handsome…@yahoo.com.

Especially, some other bad news also occurred in recent months, including the latest shipwreck at Ha Long Bay and the cracked septic tank at Noi Bai Airport which has annoyed Vietnamese people.

On May 11, the septic tank cracking led to the fact that waste was leaking to the aircraft packing area. One day ago, the Noi Bai Airport released a notice that the trouble was fixed after one hour, explaining that the water drainage system of the airport has become overloaded. However, the explanation has not been accepted by people.

Why Korean man so brutal???

South Korean man kills Vietnamese wife
=============================================

A Vietnamese woman was stabbed to death by her Korean husband in eastern South Korea early Tuesday, just 19 days after she gave birth to a baby, Vietnam News Agency reported.

The murder of the 23-year-old woman, whose family name is Hoang, occurred in their home in Cheongdo County in North Gyeongsang Province, Kim Teok-hwan, Cheongdo’s police officer told VNA.

Following tips from the neighbors of the couple, local police arrived at the crime scene and arrested the 37-year-old husband, whose family name is Im.

The husband confessed to police that he stabbed his wife during an argument.

He said Hoang had repeatedly demanded a divorce and planned to run away with the baby on Monday night, which led to their fight.

Hoang arrived in South Korea in April 2010 and gave birth to the baby 19 days ago.

The Vietnamese Embassy in South Korea is verifying the victim’s identity.

Local police have carried out an autopsy on the woman under the witness of the embassy’s officers.

Last July, Jang Do Hyo, a mentally ill South Korean man killed his 20-year-old Vietnamese wife, Thach Thi Hoang Ngoc, just eight days after she arrived in the country. He was later sentenced to 12 years in jail.

Following the case, South Korea pledged to make Korean men looking to marry foreign women undergo a cultural education program and announced tougher rules for matchmakers arranging foreign marriages.

More than a third of South Korean fishermen and farmers who married in 2009 chose immigrant brides, some because they were unable to find local women prepared to lead a rural lifestyle, according to an AFP report.

Where abandoned women become prostitutes
================================================== ====

A coastal hamlet in the central province of Binh Thuan has the dubious distinction of attracting abandoned women who do sex work for a living.

For 20 years now, many women in Buc Lo, Tuy Phong district, whose husbands have deserted them, have been offering sexual services to long-distance truck drivers.

Nguyen Thi Trang, the head of the hamlet, took Tuoi Tre journalists to the house of Hong, 27, who lives in a small shanty with her mother, eight-year-old son and three-year-old daughter.

Inside is just a small bed with a curtain.

Hong says her husband left two years ago since she could not earn enough from her work.

Danh, her mother, says many other women in the village share the same fate as Hong: “Their husbands abandoned them when their children were born.”

Since Danh moved to Buc Lo with her children 20 years ago, 30 others have come, all with children.

There are more than 70 children who have no idea who their fathers are, Danh says.

Hong’s daughter nods when asked if she misses her father, saying however that she does not know how to find him.

“But I’m not teased at school for this since many of my friends do not have fathers either,” she says.

Hong says she only works in the afternoon when the kids are at school.

“Since my kids love to study, I’ll continue sending them to school as long as I can afford it,” she says.

Pham Thien Thanh, 13, and his sister Pham Bich Ngoc, eight, have to walk five kilometers everyday to go to school.

Tran Thi Nhung, their mother, says her husband abandoned the family seven years ago.

“He visited the kids last year and promised to buy them a bicycle, but he has yet to come back,” she says.

Most of the kids usually drop out, she says.

The younger kids work as fish porters if they quit school, she says.

“But I am afraid the older girls will have nothing to do but to work like their mothers.”

Vietnamese language won’t become extinct
================================================== =====

Language evolves as life goes on
======================================

Last week, to mark the launch of our education page, we had several expats talking about the Vietnamese education system and received several feedbacks from Vietnamese readers.

This week, we continue with a topic on languages, especially the Vietnamese mother tongue, which seems to be corrupted by the creation and use of hybrid words by young people.

At the beginning of this week, Kittiworawuthi Pornkanok, a Thai who is studying Vietnamese in Ho Chi Minh City, recalled her experience reading an online article of which she could not make any sense. When she showed the article to friends and teachers, none of them could figure out what the texts written by teenagers were about either.

“There are young people creating and using a special version of their mother tongue in every country. But it seems to me that the issue is becoming prominent in Vietnam as teen language not only exists in writing but also in everyday conversation. Speaking and writing in teen language distort the grammar and spelling standards. It is also a sign that young people show no respect to the beauty of their mother tongue,” commented Kittiworawuthi.

“I hope more people will realize the need to preserve Vietnamese and try to use the language correctly. It is a way to show your pride and respect for your own culture.”

Similar to Kittiworawuthi, Zach Safford, a Briton who is studying Vietnamese, feels irritated when he hears a group of young Vietnamese using foreign language in their conversation. Zach points out that there are some people who “pretend” to forget their mother tongue and try to use some English words to appear “cool.”

“It is a good thing to create an English-speaking environment for yourself. However, do not forget to pay attention to people around you. For example, if you sit in a café by the street surrounded by labors and try to speak English, you may make people around irritated and they will see you as a show-off,” noticed Zach.

Agreeing with Zach, a reader nicknamed yourviet who claimed to have learned 7 foreign languages, revealed his tips for not forgetting the mother tongue and foreign languages:
“I am learning my own mother tongue every day by keeping up with high value literature […] I think language learning is like practicing a martial art, you must practice it every day”, wrote yourviet.

While some expats fear that teen slangs and foreign language influence may destroy the purity of the Vietnamese language, Russian-Czech linguist Ivo Vasiljev assured us that Vietnamese, as any other languages, only evolves rather than being threatened with extinction by any of those factors.

“The choice of words depends on each person’s social position, whether they are young or old, students or businessmen. Hybrid words are only popular among a certain group of people in the society and we do not know whether those words are here to stay. As a result, we should not worry about changes in our mother tongue. What matters is that we should know which position we are in to select the appropriate words to use,” explained Czech professor Vasiljev, who also speaks German, English, French, Korean and Vietnamese.

“Globalization is an exchange of economic and cultural values rather than an invasion of the mother tongue. In a country where there are still people aware of preserving their language and culture, there is no need to fear the impact of globalization at all.”

Do you know that Shakespeare invented almost 1,700 words for his plays, sonnets and narrative poems which later became common English words? New words are born to satisfy people’s need to express themselves. In addition, as American author Martin H.

Fischer once wrote: “Whenever ideas fail, men invent words,” implying that we need new words to put across new ideas to other people and make things happen.

What do you think about the evolvement of language and the effort to preserve one’s mother tongue? Send your thoughts to [email protected]

Have a nice weekend!

The students who master “the art of getting rich”
================================================== ===
VietNamNet Bridge – They are all very young, because they were born in 1980s. However, they are all considered “high income earners”, because they can pocket millions of dong a month. The common thing of the students is that they all have made investment in the education sector.

The little girl with big aspiration

Mai Phuong, the girl from Thai Nguyen City, related that she began earning money since she was a 7th grader. At that time, Phuong worked as an English private tutor for the small children in the same residential quarter.

When she was at 11th and 12th grades, Phuong won the second and third prizes in the national English competitions, which then gave her a “widespread fame”. Her classes attracted more and more learners. Phuong always had busy summer holidays, because it was the time she focused on teaching English at the classes, from morning to the evening.

“I really love those days. The work of tutoring gave me money to purchase books which then helped me improve my English,” Phuong said.

Of course, the student with excellent English easily passed the university entrance exams and became a university student who cherished the hope of setting up a business of her own – a company which specializes in training foreign languages.

It did not take Phuong much time to come to the decision. “In August 2009, I graduated from the university and worked as the secretary at Kinh Do Group. During the working time, the aspiration of establishing a company has been growing in my mind,” she said.

AT first, the foreign language center of Phuong only had several tables and chairs made by her boyfriend – a skilled carpenter. However, with reasonable marketing method and the heavy investment in teaching quality, the company of the young owner now has 500 regular learners. The 20 officers and 50 foreign teachers of the company now get the monthly income of 5-10 million dong a month on average.

Phuong hopes that her company will become one of the three biggest foreign language centers in Hanoi.

The student who earn 1000 dollar from private tutoring

Phan Quang Diep, a student of FPT University, has become well known among university students, who call him a “big guy” because of the high monthly income of 1000 dollars, or 20 million dong (in Vietnam, the people with the income of 10 million dong a month are considered high income earners).

Diep was a student of the mathematics-informatics majoring class of the High School for the Gifted under the University for Natural Sciences. Therefore, he feels confident with the deep knowledge he has and he decided to give private tutoring lessons to the students who prepare to attend the exams of schools for the gifted in Hanoi.

At first, Diep was just the teacher of small classes, but later, when he became well known, he has been admitted to the teaching centers with big brands. By the end of the third year at university, Diep could earn 30-40 million dong, or 1500-2000 dollars a month, from regular tutoring.

“If I had not taken the job of tutoring, I would have still received money from parents, but I wanted to become independent,” he explained.

Now Diep is the Member of the Board of Directors and Deputy Director of a consultancy and training center in Hanoi, the job that many other people dream of.

The special class organized by special boys

This is really a “special class”, because the students here study under a special mode: they live, have meals and learn together with the teachers, who are the four special boys, Le Minh Thong, who came first at the 2009 entrance university exams to the Hanoi Foreign Trade University, Ha Khuong Duy and Nguyen Hoang Hai, who won the gold and silver medals at Mathematics Olympiads 2009, and Dinh Quang Cuong, who got 26.5 marks from the difficult university entrance exams 2009.

As the students can live, learn and play with the teachers, they can raise questions to the teachers at any time and receive answers. On average, a student has to pay 6 million dong a month, and the students will only have to pay the sum of money after they pass the exams.

The efforts by the special boys have brought initial results: four of the six students of the first training course are now studying at universities, while the other two at junior colleges.

Cuong, the head of the team, said that the initial success has prompted him and friends to expand the classes in a larger scale.

Abuse traumatizes gay community
========================================

Researchers call for greater public awareness about the consequences of homophobic discrimination

Gays and trans-genders at a beauty contest in Ho Chi Minh City. The gay community is looking for more tolerance from the society.

A 20-year-old homosexual in Hanoi told researchers that discrimination from his classmates and parents had driven him to attempt suicide three times since the age of 14.

“The only thing I could think of doing was to die,” he said.

He made his first attempt in the 8th grade, after his classmates mocked him and his parents beat him.

The young man told researchers that he ingested rat poison but recovered from the effects the following morning.

“I did not know anyone like me and was so lonely and hurt because of what my family and classmates did to me,” he said.

Next time, he tried sleeping pills, he said, — only to vomit them all up.

In his third and final attempt to take his own life, the young man went to a quiet spot near the Nga Tu So underground tunnel. He took sleeping pills again and hoped to die alone.

But someone discovered him and took him to the police who later transferred him to hospital assuming he was a drug addict who had overdosed.

Cases like his are not rare in Vietnam.

On Tuesday (May 17), experts called for renewed action against sexual discrimination at a forum in Hanoi. The event coincided with the International Day Against Homophobia and Trans-phobia.

“A significant proportion of homosexuals suffer violence in their family because of limited awareness and social prejudices,” said Huynh Minh Thao, communication and service manager of ICS – a volunteer group working to foster a positive image of homosexuality in Vietnam. “If everyone was better informed, we could help avoid some of the anger and confusion that occurs when parents discover their child is homosexual.”

“Changing such perceptions is a big job but it is possible if it’s done step-by-step at the familial and community levels,” she added.

In 2008, the Institute for Studies of Society, Economy and Environment (ISEE) surveyed 3,000 gay, lesbian and transgender Vietnamese.

Twenty percent of the respondents said they had been beaten by their family members.

Nguyen Thi Thu Nam, a senior researcher at ISEE, said that administrative prejudices have hindered international organizations from providing assistance to Vietnamese homosexuals.

“There have been major barriers from medical workers—not just doctors but administrators and other officials working at medical facilities,” she said.

Nam said 25 medical workers in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi were trained by Family Health International (FHI) about how to detect and diffuse discrimination against homosexuals.

However, the trainees have reported that the practice continues to exist in their hospitals and clinics.

According to a joint report by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), ISEE and FHI, discrimination against men who have sex with men (MSM) persists among medical workers.

The findings, entitled “How stigma and discrimination drive HIV: A review of the regional and global evidence" were presented at the forum by authors Chris Fontaine of the UN’s AIDS-fighting agency UNAIDS and Caroline Francis of FHI.

Francis explained that such stigmas go beyond medical facilities.

“It doesn’t matter where you go, this stigma exists in different forms,” she told the forum.

The qualitative research was collected with help from eight participants in HCMC and nine in Hanoi.

Their findings indicate that homosexual discrimination has pushed some gays to drug use, pickpocketing, unsafe sex, fighting, suicide, stress, depression and dropping out of school.

The report also presented ample evidence that homophobic attitudes continue to exist in Vietnam’s healthcare system.

“Sex between a man and a woman is normal but sex between two men or two women is not normal… I think it’s something sick. Many people in society think it’s not healthy; I do too,” a 22-year-old officer at Hanoi Community Health Care told the researchers.

The report quotes one homosexual as saying: “My friend sought treatment for a sore anus and the doctor yelled at him: ‘the anus is for bowel movements, not for having sex.’”

Vietnam is the second country in the world and the first in Asia to ratify the Convention on Child Rights, but the recent study found that 13 out of 17 participants in the research reported suffering violence from family, teachers and friends during their formative years.

Vietnam’s HIV epidemic is concentrated among people who inject drugs, sex workers and the MSM. The Vietnamese Health Ministry estimates there will be around 280,000 people living with HIV by 2012, including 5,670 children.

The researchers urged Vietnamese leaders to develop and implement comprehensive communications programs that target police, education practitioners and the intimates of homosexuals to help them better understand the consequences of violence and discrimination.

They also called for the creation of psychological, health, employment, education and legal counseling services for MSM.

“Action should be taken to create a positive image of homosexuals,” Buu, a gay man in HCMC, told researchers. “Society shouldn’t think of a gay couple as being any different from a straight one. We wish society would recognize that true love exists between homosexuals.”

English skills remain elusive for graduates
=============================================

Vietnamese students afraid to speak English
================================================== =
VietNamNet Bridge – After 6-7 years of learning English at grammar school, Vietnamese students still cannot speak a correct English sentence. They are not confident enough to communicate in English.

“I am afraid of making mistakes in speaking English”

Nguyen Huy Duc, who has graduated from the Nguyen Trai High School in Hanoi, honestly admitted that though he learned English at school for seven years, from sixth to twelfth grade, he still cannot speak English.

“Besides the lessons at school, I also went to English centers. However, I could not pass the exams to get the A-level English certificate,” he said. “Now I have to struggle with English again at the university”.

Duc is not alone. Many Vietnamese students cannot communicate in English, even though they spent 6-7 years learning English at grammar schools. The problem is that they learn English just to pass regular tests or examinations, while they cannot use English in reality. Especially, many students got high scores from exams and tests, but they can only write grammatical sentences, while they are very bad at listening and communicating.

Tran Thuy Loan, an 8th grader of Lien Hoa Secondary School in Hoa Binh said on Tien phong, that she likes learning English, and she always has good learning results at school. However, last year, when she came to Hanoi to visit relatives and went to an English club, she found out that she was afraid to speak English in crowded places because she was afraid of making mistakes.

Bad English skills have become a hot topic on education forums. Educators have pointed out that it is the nature of Vietnamese people that they can easily get embarrassed when making mistakes, therefore, they would rather not to speak English to make mistakes.

Learning English like “climbing a greasy poll”

Nguyen Phuong Nam, a lecturer of the English faculty under the University for Business and Technology, pointed out that it is the traditional teaching method with which students stay passive in learning and do not have a communication environment, which is the main reason behind the ineffective teaching and learning of English. As a result, students have become afraid of learning English.

In fact, during the lessons, students are also requested to communicate with each other in English and they can also practice speaking and listening with audio tapes and video disks. However, due to many reasons, including the habits in teaching and the bad material facilities, students rarely have the chance to access to modern teaching and learning tools. In general, students can only listen to teachers, while teachers are not make good pronunciations in all cases.

“Many of my students at the university make wrong pronunciations of some basic words. However, they think that they have good pronunciations already because they have been pronouncing this way since they were at grammar school, and no need to correct the pronunciations,” she complained.

Nam said that in general, high school students do not have the chance to practice four basic skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking. At schools, teachers focus on teaching grammar, while students also focus on grammar lessons in order to pass tests and examinations.

This traditional way of teaching put students in the “passive voice” when learning English, and they cannot have good communication skills, even though students can be good at grammar. Nam said that grammar lessons should be associated with the practice, or the learning would be useless and like “climbing the greasy poll”.

Vietnamese language won’t become extinct
================================================== =====

Don’t let kids forget their mother tongue
============================================
Allan Edwin Hunt Living in Ho Chi Minh City for a long time, I notice there are more and more international schools opening here. This is a good sign as Vietnam is catching up with the world’s development.

Many international schools have been opened in the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore, as well as in many European countries. They equip their students with specialized skills and perfect English, satisfying all strict requirements of a modern and globalized society.

However, it is unacceptable that a child who was born and brought up in Vietnam can speak English better than his or her mother tongue. If I were a Vietnamese, probably I would send my kids to an international school too but I would assure that their Vietnamese is not affected by foreign languages they learn.

There are many ways to help kids not to forget their mother tongue. For example, instead of letting kids watch movies or chat online, parents can have dinner together or play with their kids. By doing so, we can avoid a future risk: members living in the same family but treating each other like strangers. Kids cannot understand their grandfather; children cannot put their points across to their parents. Many families who used to be proud because their kids speak English fluently now have some regrets since their children do not bother to speak Vietnamese any more.

Speaking a mother tongue well not only helps kids adapt to daily life but it is also an advantage for them in the future. Vietnam is a developing country and many foreigners are coming to learn the language and do business. Why do you, who were born in Vietnam, turn back on your mother tongue?

I’ve got to know some Vietnamese-Americans who want to return to Vietnam and do business. However, they have many difficulties in life since their Vietnamese is still poor. Some admitted that they regretted having neglected their mother tongue.

Generally speaking, I am afraid that Vietnam could become another Singapore one day where kids use English more often than Chinese (some can’t even speak their parents’ language at all). It is easy to understand that trend because English is used in schools, supermarkets and entertainment spots in Singapore. Chinese now is only used among family members.

In Vietnam, we still have time to change and let’s try not to make our kids learn too much foreign language and forget their mother tongue.

Trick-nology: how Vietnamese gamblers really win
================================================== ======
A chip is attached on the disk and others on sides of dice for a "xoc dia" game. In Vietnam’s gambling world, where cheating is common, the loser is the one who believes winning comes from talent and luck.

From zero to hero

I had some conversations with Quang – a reputable gambler in Hanoi who earns his living by gambling – on the cheating technology used in Vietnam’s gambling world and he promised to show me the deepest secrets of his business.

One night he invited me to a coffee shop. After meeting, he asked me to drive straight to a hotel room near Giang Vo Lake. The room became larger when the bed was moved to a corner and gamblers took to the center to begin playing cards.

Within two hours, Quang had lost just over VND50 million (US$2,440). The cards, after two hours, had become wrinkled and crumpled. Quang asked a servant to replace the deck.

Suddenly, while slowly smoking, Quang increased his bet to VND80 million. His decision surprised the other players. Unlike the previous games, Quang seemed more confident and coolheaded. He flipped his 13 cards and the other players’ faces turned white. He was the winner of the game. The others seemed like they didn’t understand what was happening.

After five hours of gambling, Quang had won a lot of money. On the way back home at dawn I still couldn’t believe how lucky he was. Quang pointed to his eyes and told me the secret was in his contact lenses. He let me wear them, and I felt a little uncomfortable in the dark for a while. But soon I could see every number, every heart, diamond, club and spade, even though he showed me the backsides of the cards. This is where Quang’s luck came from; the lenses and the conveniently timed deck substitution by the servant (Quang had the lenses in before the game began). He also revealed that there are many more “knickknacks” for cheating at gambling.

Whatever you like

As Quang told me, I searched “tools for gambling” on Google and I was up to my eyeballs with results. According to some advertisements the prices vary. For example, a marked deck can be bought for VND100,000. More high-tech tools run in the millions of dong, and others much higher.

I called a seller, Duy, and we set a meeting at a guarded pub in Cau Giay, Hanoi. Duy refused to show me the equipment because he thought doing business in such a place was extremely dangerous. Instead, he said he could bring me to an address where I could buy them.

I agreed and he led me to a house located in a very small alley. The house was stuffed full of boxes he said came from China.

He took a ceramic plate from one open box, a Nokia 6030 and some cards. These were the tools for a popular gambling game in Vietnam – xoc dia. It uses a dice that has pictures of a fish, a prawn, a crab, a rooster, a gourd and a stag. Players place wagers on a board, betting on which picture will appear.

There was a sensor equipped under the ceramic plate and six other sensors installed in each side of the dice that would send signals to the cellphone, Duy explained.

Each side of the dice is installed with a chip so that if the side of a crab is on the top, the crab button on the phone lights up, or vice versa, if the crab button is pressed, the side will appear face-up after shaking. This appliance is used by the person behind the players.

The price of the set was VND6 million ($US293).

He also showed me another winning instrument, a barcoded deck of cards and contact lenses – the devices Quang had used. The price was between VND3 million and VND3.5 million.

Duy said his clients mainly come from northern provinces such as Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh.

“Sometimes the supply can’t meet the huge demand,” he said. “Even in Hanoi where a great deal of customers have ordered lenses and barcoded decks. Any game has its own supporting tool. In case the customers have different requirements for the tools, it’s OK too, but the prices will change.”

Growing trend.........

Parents say one child is enough
======================================
For older generations, the traditional nuclear family is all about married couples with at least two children living under the same roof.

For many young modern couples, however, two children are just too much.

"I'm done after one," says Nguyen Thu Huong, owner of a beauty salon in Hanoi and mother of a seven-year-old son when asked about her plans to have another child.

"Both of us (she and her husband) work full-time and we found the first years of parenthood quite hard. We sometimes worry our child won't have enough company, but we'd rather spend quality time focusing on one," she says.

Huong is not alone. A lot of young couples no longer put much store in the old saying ‘the more, the merrier'. Instead, parents of one child are likely to describe multiple-children families as ‘crowded', ‘overloaded', or ‘stressful'.

"You may not be aware of it, but having many children means you have to divide your love, time, attention and money among your beloved. I prefer focusing all my resources and parenting potential on just the one child," says Tran Minh Nam , who enjoys being the parent of a single daughter.

For Nam , the best way to raise his ten-year-old child is to give her the best he can. This includes sending her to an international standard school in the city, letting her go to summer camps in the UK every year and creating a fund for her to study abroad.

"I could hardly make ends meet if I had a second child. You may think that an only child always means a lonely child, but taking away privileges from this child is not an idea for me," he says.

Director of the Ministry of Health's General Office for Population Family Planning Duong Quoc Trong has said having just the one child is a growing trend in Vietnam 's big cities.

Figures from the 2009 Census of Population and Housing showed that the fertility rate, or the total number of births per women aged 15-49 years, averaged 1.8 in big cities and was as low as 1.45 in HCM City.

Meanwhile, the figure in rural areas remained relatively high at 2.15.

UNFPA Assistant Representative Tran Thi Van tells the online newspaper vnexpress.net that the double income one kid trend which had played out in many developed nations was now making headway in Vietnam.

Financial burdens and pressures, the result of modern life in big cities, are given as the cause for the move towards having just one child.

"Obviously, bringing up a child the best way possible makes young couples exhausted and hesitant to have more kids," she says.

Trong says his office has spent the last 50 years aiming for a rapid reduction in the nation's fertility rate. However, changes over new lifestyles and family sizes would require a more flexible policy in the future.

"Management of population growth rate is a little like control over monetary policies. You have to tighten and loosen as necessary. Several provinces need to lower their fertility rates, some are just fine, and in big cities it might be necessary to encourage people to give birth in the next five or ten years," he says.

Raising Vietnamese’s height: over-target?
================================================== =
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a strategy to improve Vietnamese’s height by 2020. VietNamNet introduces an article by expert Nguyen Van Tuan about this strategy.

Tuan said that based on local and international medical history, this goal seems to be unfeasible.

According to the above strategy, the average height of Vietnamese youth will increase from 1.61m at present to 1.65m. In addition, average lifespan will rise from 73 to 75. The ratio of malnourished children of less than five will reduce from 17.5, to less than 5 percent.

The measures to achieve the goals are not clear while the goals are beyond ability. The scientific basis for the goals is still a question.

Low feasibility

Man’s height is a complicated anthropometric character because there are many aspects affecting height, including gene and nutrition.

According to some research works, genetic elements contribute up to 60-80 percent of the difference of height among individuals. Other research works reveal that around 20-40 percent of differences in height are caused by environmental factors, mainly nutrition.

The above research works show that increasing height by nutritious intervention is possible, but nutritious influence to a community is modest.

In general, man’s height increases with time. The later generation is often higher than the previous generation. Sons are often taller than their fathers and daughters are often taller than their mothers.

The increase of height seems to be a law of evolution, which happens in every community and every time (except for wartime). According to a recent survey of 364,538 people in 45 countries, the height rose by 0.13cm annually (1).

Below are the results of other research works in the world:

USA: A research work named Fels Study reveals that after 50 years, American’s height increased only 4.8cm (2).

The Netherlands: A research of women and men of 21 years old shows that men’s height increased from 182cm in 1980 to 184cm in 1997. For women, it rose from 168.3cm to 170.6cm the same time. Within 17 years, the height rose by 2cm for men and 2.3cm for women (3).

China: according to another research in China, in the last three decades, Chinese youth’s height increased by 5.3cm in cities and 5cm in the countryside or around 1.7cm in 10 years (4).

Japan: a research by Dr. Tim Cole shows that in 40 years (1950-1990), Japanese youth’s height rose by 4cm (5).

Vietnam: according to a survey by the National Institute for Nutrition, the height of men from 16-25 years old increased by 2.7cm each ten years during 1976-2006 (6). An unpublished research in HCM City shows that from 2004 to 2009, 18-year-old men’s height increased from 1.2 to 2.4cm and it didn’t increase for women (7).

The above research works show that Vietnamese’s height increased at the highest level in the world. It is difficult to explain why Vietnam’s data is so different from others but data quality may be a matter.

It is only nine years from now to 2020. In 9 years, Vietnam aims to increase its youth’s height by 4cm. When looking at the above research works, there is no country in the world that could achieve it in ten years.

Assumed numbers wrong?

According to the strategy, Vietnamese youth’s current height is 161cm. However, according to a research work on around 1,000 men and women aging from 18 to 30, who were selected randomly in Vietnam’s districts: the average height of men is 169cm and 156cm for women. Vietnam’s population at the age of 18-30 includes around 49.5 percent of men and 50.5 percent of women. As a result, the average height of Vietnamese youth is around 162cm, or 1cm higher than the assumption in the strategy.

The strategy also aims to raise the lifespan to 75 and said that the current lifespan is 73. This is a suspicious number, too.

In 2008, the Vietnam General Statistics Office announced that Vietnam’s lifespan was 72. In 2009, UNDP said that it was 74.3 years, ranking 54th in the world. The number was 74.6 in 2009, according to the World Bank. In 2010, a local source said that it was 72.8 years old. Briefly, Vietnam’s statistics of lifespan are lower than those by international experts. If our current lifespan is 74.6, we are approximately 75. The target of 75 years old for the next 9 years seems to be unrealistic.

The above analysis shows that Vietnam’s goal to increase its youth’s height by 4cm in the next nine years is unrealistic because so far no country in the world has achieved it.

In addition, it is needed to carefully consider the assumed height and lifespan, and to set more practical targets.

Didnt know VN also ban smoking in public......

Smoking at public sites – trifle in capital city
================================================== =
VietNamNet Bridge - Around 40,000 people in Vietnam die because of smoking annually, equivalent to the death cases caused by HIV/AIDS until March 2008. The figure will increase to 70,000 people a year by 2030. The risk has been warned but people still smoke, even at public sites, where smoking is banned.

According to the Ministry of Health’s Program against Harmful Impacts of Cigarettes, since Vietnam banned smoking at public sites (January 1, 2010), only the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai have fined ten violators, totaling VND1.5 million ($70).

More than 47 percent of men and 1.4 percent of women in Vietnam smoke. There are 33 million people who are negative smokers since they live and work in the smoking environment.

Vietnam has at least 20 million smokers who spend VND14 trillion (US$680 million) on tobacco products every year.

Research conducted by the Hanoi School of Public Health last year, showed that around 95 per cent of the tobacco merchants surveyed in 10 provinces and cities in the city had violated regulations that ban tobacco advertising and promotion as well as sponsorships. Most of the merchants and residents said they did not know about the regulations.

Parents say one child is enough

Parents struggling to register summer classes for children
================================================== =====

VietNamNet Bridge – The “thirst for summer classes” has become more serious than ever. Parents have to queue up through the night to register summer classes for their children.

When new academic years begin, parents have to queue up through the night to apply for studying at grammar schools. And when summers come, they have to queue up through the night to scramble for seats at summer classes.

Summer classes overloaded

Clubs, education centers, sports centers and schools announced before that they would only accept registrations for summer classes in early June 2011. However, parents have to contact the education centers in late May in order to get forms of application. It would be not a surprise at all if someone sees parents jostling with each other in front of education centers.

On the first day of accepting registrations for sports classes at the October 10 children’s house, in Ba Dinh district in Hanoi, many parents were present in front of the house when it was dark, though the house only began working at 7.30 am.

The parents said that their children wished to learn swimming and some other kinds of sports and they needed to scramble for seats at the classes. Those, who turned up at the children’s house at 7.30 am were told that they did not get the opportunity to buy the application forms.

Pham Huy Quang, who lives in Thanh Cong residential quarter, said happily that he was lucky enough to register a seat for his daughter at a swimming class at the October 10 children’s house, which has been well known as a good address for sports practices. However, he sadly said that it took him too much time and exertion to do that.

“Queuing up for the right to go to sports classes is the thing which can be seen only in Hanoi,” he complained.

However, Quang was still luckier than many other parents. The managers of the October 10 Children’s House said that there is only one swimming pool large enough for 1200 children, while the demand is 10 times higher.

The same situation is also occurring at the Hanoi Children’s Palace. Parents have been told that they need to register summer classes on the days between May 15 and May 31. However, the seats at “golden hours” (9-11 am and 3-7 pm every day) ran out prior to May 31. Especially, the classes for “hot” subjects like drawing or music had been full since mid May.

Where to send children to in summer?

Standing in front of the notice board and seeing the schedules of summer classes, Pham Thi Ha, a parent in Hoan Kiem District asked the 7-year old son: “What do you want to go, a drawing or life skill class? Let me know immediately, so that I can arrange my time to meet and see you off”.

“I learned drawing at school already. I went to a life skill class last summer already. Now I have to go to the countryside,” the boy answered. “But no one can take care for you in the home village,” she replied.

Finally, Ha decided to send the child to a day-boarding class, where the boy can stay in the daytime.

Ha related that last year she sent the boy to a life skill training class. However, she was discouraged with what he was taught. The boy simply learned how to introduce about himself, his family and classes.

“He learned these things at schools already,” she said. However, she did not regret bringing the son to the live skill class, because she needed to keep the boy somewhere, while she still had to go to work.

Meanwhile, a psychologist, an advisor at the Hanoi Children’s Palace, said that parents should not put too high of hopes on summer classes, and they should not expect that their children can become other people just after the training courses in summer. Summer classes are just the places where children can go to play and entertain themselves.

Even their officials also XNN, let alone the normal ppl.....

Officials found to use counterfeit high school diplomas
================================================== =======

Fifty two government officials in An Phu District, An Giang Province have been recently found to use fake high school graduation diplomas.

They are all top officials at district and commune levels with some being members of the communist party.

The officials all admitted that the diplomas are counterfeited; and some confessed they had to resort to buying a diploma at several million dong after repeatedly failing the exam.

Those were all eliminated from the local election taking place late last month.

Local authorities will take severe disciplinary action against those people, said Nguyen Van Thanh, secretary of the An Phu party commission.

An Phu authorities are also conducting an investigation into a related case in which the chairman of a commune allegedly obtained his high school diploma by asking someone else to impersonate him in a high school graduation exam.

I think you need a Vietnamese dictionary. I mean, the real one, not the "walking Vietnamese dictionary". :D Last time I bought one in Vietnam and it only cost me 44,000. In this dictionary, you can find many words that you cannot find in Vdict or Google translation.

Best of all, you get to know the Chinese explanation.

Tu Dien Viet Han, from Huynh Dieu Vinh

um sum = 喧鬧

i have been using the word "um sum" in conversation but don't know how to write. the meaning of "um sum" is loud, noisy.

usually when we speak over the phone and heard noisy background voice, the vb will ask "a o dau, tai sao um dum wa". this us how i get the meaning.

Ha Long Bay tourism paralyzed, tourists denied
================================================== ===========

Around 500 passenger boats on Ha Long Bay in the northern province Quang Ninh refused to carry travelers on Friday morning as boat owners cited that their facilities failed to meet safety regulations as ruled in the new decision.

The unanimous move of those boat owners has caused the cruising service on Ha Long Bay becoming totally paralyzed.

Ha Long 03 boat owner Nguyen Van Dan told Tuoi Tre the new decision issued by the Quang Ninh People’s Committee rules on so strict a condition on safety that his boat fails to meet them.

Ngo Quang Dao, director of Phuong Dong Galaxy owning some boats, added he was only informed of the new decision coded 716/2011/QD-UBND on June 8, two days before the decision took effect Friday.

The decision requires boats to install automatic systems for fire alarm and fire fighting, he added.

“It requires each boat must equip a high-pressure pump able to spray water up to 35-40 meters, but we can’t find such a pump in Vietnamese market now,” Dao said.

“Those are the reasons why we don’t register to carry passengers today,” he argued.

Dao Manh Luong, chairman of the Association of the Ha Long Bay’s Fleet of Boats, recommended that the province should discuss with boat owners to build up a roadmap to upgrade the fleet.

Local authorities have not made any public announcement or explanation concerning the case.

It has left over a hundred of domestic and foreign travelers waiting for hours in vain this morning.

I guess this is in response to the recent boat capsize when several tourists drowned. There are a few high-end operators with no problems though, eg Emeraude, etc.

东南亚第一座 越南核电站2020年投入服务
===============================================

Parents struggling to register summer classes for children
================================================== =====

Their primary school entry also so high ....

Primary school entrance exam season heating up
================================================== ======
VietNamNet Bridge – It’s now the most difficult period for many parents in big cities, since their children enter the primary school entrance exam season, which is no less stressful than the university entrance exam.

The race among parents

The primary school entrance exam season began in late May with the exam to the Nguyen Sieu School. 400 students registered to attend the exam, while the school plans to enroll only 150 students.

“H”, who lives on Nguyen Chi Thanh Street in Hanoi, related that her son attended the exam which took place on April 23 and 24. All the examinees stayed at the school from the morning to late afternoon, while they had lunches right at the school.

“My son looked radiant and self-confident when he left the school in the afternoon. He said he would pass the exam. However, he could not tell me what he did at the exam. I was worried stiff,” she said.

As predicted, the boy failed the exam. However, H does not give up the plan on sending the boy to a prestigious private school. “I will ask my son to attend another exam to another primary school. Doan Thi Diem School is an ideal choice, but I am afraid he will fail again,” she said. “If he fails again, he will have to go to a state owned school”.

H, like many other parents, does not dare to let her child to attend the exam to the Doan Thi Diem Primary School, because the school has been well known as setting very high requirements on students.

The exam questions of Doan Thi Diem School are always so difficult that people believe that the questions are as complicated as the questions raised at the “Road to Olympia”, a contest for high school excellent students. Some people comment on education forums that with such the exam questions, Vietnam will become the country with the best education in the world.

A member from the mathematics forum of the Hanoi University for Natural Sciences commented that if students can solve all the exam questions, the knowledge for first grade will not be a problem to them.

1400 students attended the entrance exam to Doan Thi Diem school, held on May 28, while the school plans to enroll 400 students only. “T”, a parent, whose daughter luckily passed the exam to Doan Thi Diem School, said that the girl had to spend much time to prepare for exam by attending the Tuoi Tho Club of the school since March 2011. Besides, the girl also went to a private tutoring class once a week. Especially, she is very good at English, because she has been going to Apollo, an English center, for the last two years.

“My relatives and colleagues all say congratulations to me, and I am proud of my daughter because this was really a difficult exam. I think that the parents whose children pass the university entrance exams would be not happier than me,” she said.

Many students, few schools

The Experimental Primary School, a unit of the Vietnam Education Science Institute, but operates under the mode of non-state owned school, only issued a limited number of application forms. Therefore, parents every summer have to queue up in front of the school to purchase the forms.

A lot of parents were seen cooling their heels at the school at 3-4 am, waiting for application forms; even though the school announced it began selling the forms at 8 am. However, parents affirmed that the forms ran out right at 7.30 am. Some parents said some “brokers” offered to sell the form at 500,000 dong.

About 600 forms have been sold, which means that 600 students will take the entrance exam, while the school will accept 180 students only.

The exams to non-state owned primary schools will last until the end of June. Lomonosov School will organize the exam on June 11, while students will have to attend the exam to Le Quy Don School on June 18. Many parents say they have been worried stiff when hearing that the school will enroll only 360 students, while the number of registered students has reach 1000.

The stressful exams to primary schools take place every summer. No one can say for sure when the situation will be improved, because there are always many students, while there are very few good schools with good material facilities.

New place to relax......

Cua Tung – the Queen of beaches
=================================================
VietNamNet Bridge - Located in the coastal district of Vinh Linh in the central province of Quang Tri, Cua Tung Beach is the nation's "Queen of Beaches", arousing the curiosity of many tourists to come and experience its beauty.

The one kilometre-long beach is not particularly long or wide, but the water is gentle and clear. Two underground rock formations, Mui Si and Mui Lai, encroach on the sea, creating a small bay that shelters the beach from strong waves and tides.

The beach is surrounded by a belt of basalt and stone mountains that resemble a huge comb passing through the hair of the waves. On the hill grow green orchards of jackfruit, pineapple, banana and custard-apple.

While the central region is known for its harsh weather, with dry winds from the southwest and major storms from the sea, Cua Tung Beach is protected by Mother Nature, out of the wind on most days, and the bay offers safe harbour for fishing boats.

The first foreigner to set foot here during the time of French colonialism saw the area’s potential for developing resorts. At that time, Vietnam was divided into three regions and the central region was known as Annam. Ernest Albert Briere, the governor of Annam from 1891-97, was one of those who fell in love with the place, and he built a palace here in 1896 to spend his holidays on the beautiful beach.

The palace was transferred to King Duy Tan (1900-45), the 11th king of the Nguyen Dynasty, who ascended the throne at age 7 and bridled at living in confinement in palaces under the control of the French. He travelled extensively around the country, and Cua Tung was one of his stops.

King Bao Dai (1913-97), the 13th and final Vietnamese feudal king, often traveled from his capital in Hue to Cua Tung to enjoy this amazing beach.

The Frenchman Andre de Laborde, who had a deep understanding of this land, described Cua Tung as a gentle sloping beach which is part of the green highland 20m above sea level. From the slope, people can see the changes in the colour of the sea and sky. Shades of blue change hourly under the sunshine, surprising anyone who has the chance to witness it.

The sea here is so shallow that a person can run about half a kilometre from the shore and the water will only be up to their chest.

Nearby Cat Son village is a short stroll along the beach. It has been famous for hundreds of years for its fish, drum-making, carpentry and mother-of-pearl inlay. Here, you can dine on cuttlefish, prawns, lobster, butterfish, mackerel, Chinese herring, and other kinds of seafood cooked in the local way.

To the south of the beach is the estuary of the Ben Hai River with Hien Luong Bridge just 10km from Cua Tung Beach. The bridge lies on the 17th parallel and formed the border between North and South Vietnam between 1954 and 1975.

This symbol of separation and loss in wartime is now one of the links between Vinh Linh and Vinh Gio districts in the province. Boarding a boat at the base of the bridge, travellers can see lush rice paddies, bamboo and casuarinas trees along the river banks. The slow rhythm of life, the whisper of the wind and the rippling of the water, all bring a feeling of peace.

About 30km offshore from the beach is Con Co Island, a 4- sq. km island with a coastline of about 8km and an average elevation of 5-30m above sea level. At the centre of the island is a 63m-high mountain which was a strategic position during the time the country was divided. Though it is isolated from the mainland by heavy winds, soldiers braved the strong waves and enemy attacks to carry food and weapons to the island.

Lush forests and fruit trees cover the island, including hardwoods with resin as red as blood. In autumn, the bang (Malabar almond) trees also turn red, making the island even more picturesque.

Since 1989, 4,000 coconut trees, symbolising the 4,000-year history of Vietnam, have been cultivated on the island. It is also the home of a small rattlesnake that is used to steep in rice wine to make medicine for treating backache and other ailments. Black and white sea cucumbers as big as a toe are found in the surrounding waters and make a good dish that also has medicinal properties.

Tours to the battlefields in the province and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) allow visitors experience the Vinh Moc Tunnels – a 2km-long network of tunnels up to 23m underground that were used to shelter residents during wartime – as well as the Old Citadel of Quang Tri, the Ta Con airstrip, the Khe Sanh – Road 9 Battlefield, and the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Vermicelli and fish – a delicious speciality of Kien Giang
================================================== ====

The brand name of Kien Giang vermicelli and fish has appeared for a very long time and nobody knows exactly where it came from; but the taste of the dish is so typical that we cannot confuse it with any other kind of vermicelli and fish.

Kien Giang province is the ended land in the South West of the country. With a long coast, Kien Giang has a large aquatic product. The food here is processed in various ways but still kept their own flavor.

The vermicelli and fish is a popular dish; each place has their own flavor. However, the Kien Giang vermicelli and fish is special in its own way.

Although people humbly consider vermicelli and fish as a common dish, the process to cook the dish here is not simple at all.

First, the fish should be alive when we prepare the dish. If it is already dead, its meat would not tasty anymore. After removing all its scab, clean the fish and cut it into three parts. Cut the head apart from the body and keep the bowel stick to the head.

Using a pointed knife to cut a small line on the fish’s stomach and then taking all the remained food out. When doing so, we must be very careful not to break the fish’s liver and gallbladder. (In the Southern, people highly value the fish’s bowel. They consider it as the best part of the fish. Not only that, the bowel also has a cultural meaning in communication. In a meal, the bowel would be respectly given to honor ones).

The fish then would be steamed in a pot call “xửng” (it is a wood mould that is usually used for steaming with some holes at the bottom) so that the sweet water from the fish would drop into the pot of bullion below.

When the fish is cooked, take it out and remove all the skin. Then, break the fish into pieces and put them on a plate. After that, we would prepare the shrimp. Shrimp used for cooking the vermicelli and fish must be the sea shrimp.

Clean the shrimps, remove their shell and head, embalm them with a little salt, pepper and garlic. Then, dry the shrimps with a little oil and garlic, keep the fire small and dry until the shrimps turn into golden yellow.

If we want the bullion more moreish, we could bake a dried cuttlefish and tear it into small pieces and put them in the pot of bullion. We should not use bones from pig, chicken or cow since it would make the typical flavor of fish lose. If the fish has caviar, we can take it out, and put it in the pot of bullion to make it look more attractive.

The vermicelli is also carefully manipulated. The rice must be a good one. First, we have to soak the rice in fragrant coconut water, and then wash it in water so that the rice would be spotlessly white.
The next step is husking the rice and kneading the rice flour. Then, we put the rice flour into the mould and push the flour into boiling water. When the rice is float, we would have the vermicelli, take it out and pour cold water over. The vermicelli must be processed in such a meticulous way so that it would be fragrant and smooth.

Soak the vermicelli into the bouillon and quickly put it into a bowl, then put the fish and shrimp on and then pour the bouillon into the bowl. We can also add some green onion and dill to make it more delicious.

The dish would taste better if it is served with Phu Quoc fish sauce – the famous typical fish sauce of Kien Giang.

In Kien Giang, people like to eat vermicelli in some common restaurants at the market or in some small shifts. When enjoying the dish in such places, you would truly feel its delicious taste in the simple and natural atmosphere.

Fake Hai Phong cops caught ‘fining’ drivers
================================================== ====

Two men in Hai Phong who impersonated police officers and fined vehicle drivers to pocket the money were arrested Monday by the police after they forgot one minor detail – that cops wear uniforms.

Last Friday Nguyen Van Dung, 25, of Thuy Nguyen District and Do Duy Hoang, 19, of Le Chan District wore police helmets and used whistles to deceive drivers on Cau Dat Street.
However, Sergeant Major Do Son Tung of the Hai Phong police training and professional fostering center, who was passing by, noticed the two were not in uniform.

He secretly followed them.

At Quan Ngua Lake, when they were about to “fine” a driver, Tung, with the help of passersby, captured them.

On interrogation, Dung and Hoang confessed to their crime. They said in 30 minutes they had stopped seven drivers on Le Loi, Pham Minh Duc, and Luong Khanh Thien Streets and extracted VND50,000 (US$2.5) from each.

================================================== =======

Deputy Prime Minister called for stricter oversight of Vietnam’s gender selection practices

When doctors at a private medical service in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 5 told Tran Thi Thanh Hoang that her unborn child was a boy, she was hit with a feeling of joy.

“I know it’s illegal to inform pregnant mothers about the gender of their babies,” said the 25-year-old employee of an advertisement company. “But I was too eager to know about that.”

Hoang said the doctor conducting the ultrasound scan had a clever way to inform her and avoid being detected by health inspectors.

“He had placed two small cards in a drawer, one reading ‘son’ and another reading ‘daughter.’ The doctor opened the drawer, pointed to the ‘son’ card and quickly closed it without saying a word,” she said.

Such violations, which sometimes inspire parents to abort their unborn daughters, have exacerbated Vietnam’s gender imbalances, officials say.

And the problem is only getting worse.

“The gender ratio has risen to 111 males per 100 females among children under four years old. This is much higher than in 2009, when it was 108.65 males per 100 females,” said Duong Quoc Trong, director of the General Office of Population and Family Planning in a statement issued on June 6.

Trong said the imbalance has gotten worse over the past decades. In some provinces, the ratio is as high as 130 males per 100 females. Provinces with the worst imbalances include Hung Yen, Hai Duong, Bac Ninh and Ha Nam, he added.

Vietnam's sex ratio at birth (SRB) has been rising steadily for the past few years, from the "average" 105 boys to 100 girls in 1999 to 110:100 in 2006. According to the 2009 Census, sex selection is practiced most in Vietnam’s Red River Delta provinces and among wealthier households.

Health authorities have warned that about ten percent of Vietnamese men, or two million men, will face problems finding a wife in the next 20 to 25 years.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan chaired a meeting on May 30 seeking strategies to curb Vietnam’s gender imbalance.

“Ultrasound scans, cheap abortions and the legality of abortion of first-trimester babies have contributed to the imbalance,” he said.

Nhan said that “the entire political system” should get involved in tackling the gender imbalance, with a particular focus on the ten provinces with the highest gender discrepancies.

He also instructed relevant agencies to enforce the laws banning the disclosure of prenatal gender information and tighten inspections of abortion facilities.

The Health Ministry was told to create an action plan for the ten provinces with the worst problems by the end of this month.

According to Deputy Health Minister Nguyen Viet Tien, Vietnam is among the countries with the highest abortion rate in the world. The abortion of female babies following ultrasonic scans was identified as the prime contributing factor.

A report presented by the Health Ministry at the May 30 meeting warned that there may be “unexpected socio-political consequences” when this lopsided generation reaches marrying age in 2025.

Many men will find it difficult to marry and this could lead to marriage with foreign bribes, which the report’s authors called “an unsustainable solution.”

Vietnam launches prostitution crackdown
================================================
A motorcycle taxi driver waits for clients next to a poster depicting so-called social evils including prostitution and drug addiction in northern Vietnam.
The government has launched a five-year program aimed at cracking down on prostitution in communes and towns.

With a budget of VND629 billion ($30.5 million), the program looks to reduce the rate of prostitution in communes and towns by 60 percent by 2015, the government said in a statement posted on its website this week.

Building more rehab and healthcare centers and providing job training for former sex workers are among the measures the government said will be taken to battle prostitution.

Money will also be spent on propaganda such as leaflets, newspapers and documents aiming to raise awareness of sex workers about HIV infection and sexually transmitted diseases.

Police departments will be supported to strengthen crackdown on secret brothels and prostitutes in public places.

An estimated 30,000-40,000 sex workers are reported to operate nationwide, and the industry has continued to flourish despite previous campaigns against it.

Between 2006 and 2010, Vietnamese authorities discovered nearly one third of more than 182,000 establishments housing prostitutes, with a total 9,067 sex workers busted.

Localities with the most prostitutes include Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Can Tho, Tay Ninh, Dong Thap and Dong Nai.

An estimated 30-40 percent of Vietnamese prostitutes are infected with HIV, according to a study by the Social Ills Prevention Department in Ho Chi Minh City.

The study reveals that prostitutes have the third highest rate of HIV infection after drug users and men who have sex with men.

Toyota Vietnam punishes whistle-blowing engineer
================================================== =====
Mr. Le Van TachToyota Vietnam has suspended for three months an engineer who exposed technical faults in manufacturing leading to the biggest vehicle recall in Vietnamese history earlier this year.

During the period, the company will still pay 50% of salary to Le Van Tach.

On June 11 Tach received the suspension notice on the grounds that he negatively affected work and had a bad influence on the prestige of colleagues.

Tach said after exposing several technical flaws in Toyota cars assembled in Vietnam, he had received threats and insults from colleagues.

On May 31 Tach sent a complaint to the general director that seven senior officials had insulted and threatened him. He wanted the company to apologize and compensate him.

But the general director replied that the accusations lacked evidence.

The company said after an investigation that many of the employees had “only joked” while some did not remember or spoke in an individual capacity and not on behalf of the company.

It thus ruled out paying compensation or tendering an apology.

“I am very surprised the general director of Toyota Vietnam tries to deny the truth to evade responsibility,” Tach said.

Tran Quoc Hung, head of Toyota Vietnam’s planning department, told Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper Sunday that the suspension was not related to Tach’s whistle-blowing but to his baseless accusations that caused disunity among employees.

“Tach has accused a number of individuals in the company and requested the company for compensation. After investigation, we found that such acts are not related to production activities and caused rifts within the company.

“This [suspension] is necessary for Tach to consider his recent acts,” Hung said, adding the suspension was in line with the labor law and company regulations.

April 1 press conference

On April 1, Toyota production director for Vietnam Tadashi Yoshida had told the media that he welcomed employees’ contributions towards improving products.

“Tach will not be fired or discriminated,” he had said.

Due to Tach’s expose, since April this year, Toyota Vietnam has recalled over 70,000 cars for problems related to bolts, pressure and seats.

In the latest recall - on June 7, the company announced that it will offer free checks for oil pressure on 6,108 Innova J cars produced between December 26, 2005 and November 24, 2010.

On April 15, Toyota Vietnam officially offered an apology and released a recall plan on 65,703 cars including a mere 167 Innova J vehicles.

The company earlier had announced a recall on 278 Camry cars.

Hero or villain?

Tach in late April received the “Responsibility Prize” from the Center for Research on Communication Development under Hanoi-based Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Association.

He was lauded for his efforts in ensuring the benefits of more than 650,000 consumers in Vietnam and road safety.

Tach said during the award ceremony that he had told Toyota bosses many times about the technical flaws but they had paid no heed or even threatened him.

“I understand that Toyota Vietnam is a big enterprise with a brand name and trusted by many consumers. But the way it acted, shying away from responsibility and announcing false information, is surprising".

“They initially said only 8,830 vehicles [actual number is over 70,000] suffered from technical faults and announced the flaws would not affect quality”, Tach said at the awarding ceremony.

Its not just that but most vn guys just don't have responsibility towards the family.

From what I know most only shoot their load, get the wife pregnant and disappear to find someone to shoot their load again. No Woman charter so no need to give alimony.

This makes the girl fearful to marry their kind. At the same time, lack of employment opportunities and low salary means many don't have a high pay.

Ho Chi Minh City workers fall prey to loan sharks
================================================== ==

Workers in Ho Chi Minh City are forced to borrow from loan sharks at usurious rates of interest that sometimes reach 30 percent a month.

The failure to pay in time means a penal interest and beatings by gangs working for the moneylenders.

Your correspondent went disguised as a worker and asked a woman lender living near the Vinh Loc Industrial Park in Hoc Mon District for a loan for paying rent.

She was reluctant, saying she only lent to regular borrowers.

But when I told her that I knew an associate of hers, she checked before asking me with a smile how much I wanted. The interest rate would be 10 percent a month.

“There is no paperwork. All I need is your signature. Since you come recommended by my associate, I’ve got all the information about you already.”

She handed over VND1 million (US$50) and asked me to sign in a notebook filled with other signatures.

There are four other loan sharks lurking around Vinh Loc Industrial Park, who charge 10 to 12 percent a month.

There are four or five such illegal lenders in the area near Tan Binh Industrial Park in Tan Phu District.

“The loan sharks know that workers badly need money and have no other choice,” Thu Hong, a worker at the Tan Binh Industrial Park, said to explain the exorbitant interest rates that could climb to 30 percent a month.

Hung, a loan broker near Binh Duong Industrial Park in Binh Duong, told Tuoi Tre that workers can borrow up to VND20 million ($1,000) at 15 percent a month from lenders.

The area has many loan sharks but workers need Hung’s recommendation to borrow from them.

Some operate even inside industrial parks.

Nguyen Thi Hoa, who works for Nam Yang sewing company at the Song May Industrial Park in Dong Nai, said some workers in her company had become moneylenders.
Workers can hardly pay off

In June 2010 D.Y.N, a worker at the Binh Duong-based VSIP Industrial Park, borrowed VND5.5 million ($275) from a lender at 10.5 percent. After twice paying the monthly interest of VND600,000, N. could no longer afford it.

With the lender putting pressure on her to pay, she had to hide from him.

But in April this year the lender caught up with her and demanded VND14 million ($700), including a fine, failing which he threatened to cut off her ear.

Fortunately for her, the police arrested the lender.

A man working at the Tan Tao Industrial Park in Tan Phu was assaulted by a gang hired by the lender for failing to repay a VND1 million loan he had taken from a loan shark. The gang also threatened to cut off his limbs if he did not clear the debt soon.

Duc Truong, a worker at the Vinh Loc Industrial Park, said workers had no choice but to borrow from the loan sharks, especially when their company paid their salary late.

“Once a worker borrows from a lender, they have to borrow from others to pay the [first] lender in time. And they are stuck in a cycle.”

Going abroad to attend English summer camps in fashion
================================================== ========

VietNamNet Bridge – In order to help children have attractive summer holidays, many Vietnamese parents are ready to spend hundreds of millions of dong to send their children abroad to English summer camps.

While low and medium income workers queue up in front of children’s houses and summer clubs to register summer classes for their children, high income parents think of sending their children abroad to English summer camps. May and June are the good time for departure.

Summer camp services on high demand

A lot of overseas study consultancy firms now organize overseas summer camp programs, including ILA Vietnam, EF, VUS, First Alliances. Meanwhile, the most wanted destinations are Australia ((Sydney, Perth), the US (Los Angeles, New York, Boston), the UK (London, Manchester), Canada and Singapore.

A lot of firms have begun providing the services recently, after realizing the high demand from the students, who want to spend time to “discover the world” and get acquainted with the countries where they will go later to follow university study.

Le Manh Hung, a student in Ba Dinh district, said that his parents have agreed to fund his trip to the US this year. “I will have the chance to visit landscapes in Los Angeles, while I will also have the chance to practice English,” he said.

Nguyen Thi Hanh, the mother of Hung, said that she plans to send Hung to the US to follow the university study after Hung finishes high school. Therefore, she would like to send Hung to the US this summer, so that Hung can get acquainted with the living and learning environment in the US.

“A lot of my friends, who have their children studying in the US have advised me to send the son to summer camps in the US right now, so that the boy can gradually get adapted to the new environment,” she said.

Nguyen Phuong Hoa, a 11th grader of the Hanoi-Amsterdam High School recalled the happy days of the last summer. “In the first week in Singapore, we only spent time to visit the central area, supermarkets and parks. After that, we could visit Sensota island, Jurong bird’s park and the Singaporean National Zoo and many other interesting places,” she said. “They were wonderful days,” she added.

However, visiting sites is not the main goal of Vietnamese students. The most important thing that persuades parents to spend huge sums of money to allow children to take trips abroad, is that the trips can bring them the opportunities to practice English. Therefore, besides attending outdoors activities, students also have to study.

“We were asked to write essays and make presentations. We could talk about the landscapes we visited, or relate how we made purchases, or simply describe a seller we once met,” Hoa said.

She went on to say that the trips abroad are very useful and interesting, because they can help students become independent and easily adapt to new environments with differences in languages and cultures. Besides, the new cultural, social and historical knowledge about foreign countries, students can be more self-confident in communication in English.

Summer holiday camps reserved for the rich only

As the living standards of many families in big cities have been improved, parents not only try to send children to prestigious schools in Vietnam, but also draw up long term study plans for them. Many parents plan to send children abroad to follow university education, and they begin preparing for this since the children enter primary school.

It is clear that overseas summer camps are reserved only for children from well off families, because the camps are always very costly.

According to VTC, a trip, which lasts two to six weeks to the US, UK or Australia, costs between 3900 and 6000 dollars, while a trip to Singapore is cheaper, about 1400-2500 dollars.

Hanh, the mother of Hung, has also revealed that she has chosen a prestigious service provider, but the expenses are really high, at 6000 dollars, or 120 million dong.

Where children can learn life skills?
==============================================
VietNamNet Bridge – Life skill training centers have been mushrooming in big cities - Hanoi and HCM City – to meet the increasingly high demand. However, where to go to practice life skills is really a headache for parents.

Attending “military semester” and going to temples

Parents nowadays tend to send their children to military camps or to temples on summer days, because they believe that the children can learn good things in the environment which requires strict disciplines.

Truc Lam Tay Thien Zen monastery is a well-known address among the parents who want to send their children to on summer days to learn Buddhist Law. Children here have to get up very early at 3 am, and then go to a hall where they practice meditation. The meditation finishes at 5 am, when children have breakfast. Children queue up with bowls on their hands, waiting for their time to choose vegetarian meals for themselves.

At 7.30 am, children begin the lessons about Buddhist. They are taught to look at things with love, to differentiate wrong and right things to keep away from evils. Lunches begin at 11.30 am every day. Before eating, children pray together and listen to the lessons about the origin of rice, potatoes, and the meaning of vegetarian meals.

In the afternoon, the children, who get used to the lifestyle in urban areas, are taught to do housework, such as cooking, washing dishes and preparing food. A day finishes by the repentance ceremony, where children recall their activities in the day.

Urban parents also like to bring their children to military camps in summer, hoping that the “iron discipline” can help re-educate the children. There, at the military camps, they have to live and work in accordance with timetables: getting up early, working hard, doing physical and thinking exercises. Many timid and shy boys have become stronger and braver after the training courses.

One thing cannot fit all

Phuong, a parent in Hanoi, related that last summer she decided to bring her son, a 6th grader, to a temple in Vinh Phuc province after she heard that the living environment at the temple can help make people calm and patient. However, after three days, she received a call from the boy, who implored her to take him back home.

“They boy looked pale and frightened which made me feel so sorry for him,” Phuong said. “He looked panic in the next days and always asked parents to sleep with him every night”.

She after realized that at the temple, the boy had to live in an atmosphere full of incense smoke, where he heard prayers all day long, could not watch TV and had no relative to talk with, therefore, he got frightened.

“I know my son does not have strong nerves. But, I thought he would have friends to make acquaintance with, and I believed that my son would live in a good environment, where he would be explained about moral philosophy. I could not imagine that these would frighten him,” Phuong said.

Ha and his wife in Ba Dinh district in Hanoi, decided to bring their son to a “military semester” organized by a private company. They hoped the strict military discipline would help re-educate the boy, who was lazy at learning and regularly fought with friends.

However, the boy remained unchanged after the 10-day training course. Especially, during the time spent at the military camp, he got many new friends, who were, like him, also brought there to be re-educated.

Le, a mother in Cau Dien town in Hanoi, related that she sent her daughter to a life skill practice center in Cau Giay district. The teacher of the girl, a university student, said in front of tens of boys and girls: “You do not need to try to learn hard to get much knowledge. You just need to have “soft skills” to be able to succeed in your lives”.

Le said that she then gave up the idea of sending the girl to the center after hearing the “advices” of the teacher.

It is clear that one thing could not fit all, and that one thing that is good for someone, could be dangerous for others.

Race for “star schools” getting fiercer in Hanoi
================================================== ====

VietNamNet Bridge – The seats at “star schools” are getting more and more expensive, since the demand is too high, while the supply is limited. Brokers now offer to sell seats at the schools at 3000 dollars (60 million dong) for each.

How much is a seat at star school?

Tuyet Lan, a mother in Cau Giay district, said that she has been moving heaven and earth to register a seat at TH Primary School for her son, Nguyen Duc. However, to date, she is still not sure if the boy can enroll in the school.

Lan has been told that in order to be able to enroll in the school, she needs to pay about 1000 dollars (20 million dong). Lan accepts that price, provided that the son can study at a prestigious school.

However, she still is not sure, if the sum of money can help, because the headmaster of the school has told her that the school needs to prioritize the students who live in some certain areas as requested by the local education department, and it will only consider other cases later.

Lan is not the only mother who feels anxious about their children’s seats at star schools. Phuong, a mother in Ba Dinh district, also complained that choosing school for the daughter has caused a headache to all members of her family.

According to Phuong, several months ago, she met a broker, who promised to arrange a seat for her daughter at KD Primary School, a prestigious school in the district, if she agreed to pay 1000 dollars. However, after that, in March, the broker said the “seat price” rose to 1300 dollars. The price once again was raised to 1500 dollars in May.

Phuong accepted to pay 1500 dollars, because she thought the price was not too high if her daughter can study at a good school and with good teachers. However, in late May, the broker demanded 1700 dollars which is really unaffordable for her. Phuong said now she has to register a seat at a middle school for the child.

Education forums these days are full of the entries about choosing primary schools for children. On webtretho, a well-known forum, there have been more than 300 comments of parents, who share experiences about how to choose schools and teachers. A member with the nick “Thienlam23” asked for help from other members, as she wants to obtain a seat at Dang Tran Con A Primary School in Thanh Xuan district. Especially, the member wants her child to study with teachers Huyen or Hoa.

Viet, a father in Ba Dinh District, said that he has luckily obtained a seat at TA Primary School for his daughter after paying 1000 dollars worth of the “underground fee”. He said that the sum of money is “reasonable” and acceptable, if comparing with the sums of tuitions students of non-state owned primary schools have to pay. A friend of Viet’s told him that he has to pay 3000 dollars for a seat at another school in Ba Dinh district.

Parents’ race causes chaos in the society

Former Minister of Education and Training Pham Minh Hac, now Chair of the Vietnam Psychological Education Science Society, said that the children, who can study at good schools and with good teachers, will have better conditions to develop. Therefore, it is understandable why parents try to choose the best schools for their children. However, he said, choosing schools with money, thus causing chaos in the society must be unacceptable.

A poll conducted recently by the Vietnam Society of Study Encouragement showed that 62 percent of polled parents admitted that they used close relations with VIP, or money to register study for their children at star schools.

A lot of parents, who do have enough patience and money, have to give up the race for star schools. In this case, they have to let their children go to middle schools. However, they still try to send the children to the classes run by prestigious teachers.

Hang Phuong, a mother in Long Bien district, said that after a lot of thoughts, she has decided to send the child to a school near her house, but she will have to ask a prestigious teacher to give tutoring lessons to the child, because she fears the child may lag behind other classmates.

The Englishman who sings Vietnamese
==============================================

Lee Kirby is not new to many young Internet users in Vietnam and it is clear why the English man has captured many Vietnamese hearts. He now plans to sing his way down the country.

He speaks Vietnamese well, and sings Vietnamese’s all time favorites even better.

From the iconic “Diem Xua” by the legendary Trinh Cong Son, to a more contemporary “Uoc Gi” by pop singer My Tam or a touch of folk songs with “Beo Dat May Troi,” Lee has proved music can be a powerful channel to approach a new culture.

In 2002, the Londoner made his first trip to Vietnam and fell in love with the country’s melodies and language.

He went back and learned “Song Ve Dau” by Trinh Cong Son, his first Vietnamese song with a Vietnamese student studying A-level at Ashbourne College, where he still works.

Lee has been back and forth ever since, traveling around the country and even performing at some upscale cafes in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

His favorite venues, however, are in the streets of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, its beautiful Hoan Kiem Lake or Saigon’s large parks and myriads of street cafes where he loves wandering around with a group of friends and his acoustic guitar.

Not surprisingly, the hang-out habit seems to have inspired Lee’s most recent plan to engage his talent to a wider audience.

“I am going to travel from North to South from July 15 to August 15, and I will sing along the trip and everywhere I can,” Lee said.

He said he is ready to sing Vietnamese at the park, on the bus, the rice paddy fields or under a tree’s shadow, adding that bringing simple joy to people he comes across on his way makes him happy.

“I used to sing for people I just met in the countryside where I traveled before. We gathered under a tree and sang together. I am happy that I can share interesting moments with these people I met for the first time, who all lead very hard lives and seldom have any form of entertainment.”

Four of Lee’s Vietnamese friends will join him in this trip and they too will sing popular songs.

For him, apart from Trinh Cong Son and Tran Tien, he is perfecting folk songs as well as Le Cat Trong Ly’s and Nguyen Duc Cuong’s, young composers that are taking the music scene by storm.

Until now, Lee’s collection boasts more than 20 Vietnamese songs, all sang with precise and emotional pronunciations.

“It takes me only five hours to be able to sing a Vietnamese song, but singing well and with emotions require a lot of work. I am not afraid to do what I love, to try new things and not care too much what others may think.”

His favorite motto is, “Do what you love before you get old and have no time left.”

He said he is considering quitting his job at Ashbourne, which belongs to his father, to move to Vietnam.

Now small children in vn very stressed by education :cool: :confused:

5-year-old children hurrying for intensive practice writing classes
================================================== ========
VietNamNet Bridge – The babyhood of Vietnam children seems to becoming shorter because they have to begin learning at the year of four or five instead of six. Vietnamese parents now force their 5-year-old children to practice writing before they officially go to primary schools.

“I never thought before that my child should begin learning at the age of five. However, I now feel worried when hearing that children of my friends all can read and write already. Therefore, I have to bring my child to intensive mathematics and writing practicing classes now to prepare him for the first grade,” said Nu, a parent in Linh Dam residential quarter in Hanoi.

Every day, she and her husband take turns to bring the son to tutoring class and pick him from the class which is five kilometers far away from their house.

Ngoc, a mother in Kim Lien area in Hanoi, also said that she has asked her son to practice writing since after-Tet days.

“Previously, I thought that the curriculum for first graders was simple and no need to force my daughter to learn writing and reading in advance. However, it was my wrong decision,” Ngoc said.

Ngoc’s first child began going to school two years ago. On the first days at school, the teacher told Ngoc that her child was the worst in the class in terms of writing. As a result, Ngoc had to spend her evenings with the daughter until 11 pm, when both of them practiced writing and solved mathematics questions.

Ngoc said that she has learned lessons from the first child and she has been hurrying the second child to attend tutoring classes. “Now the boy can read and write fluently. However, I still ask him to continue practicing, because all other children now can read and write before they go to the first grade,” she said

A lot of parents have got rattled over the children’s learning, as the new academic year will come in just two months, and they fear that their children do not have much time more to practice writing and reading.

On education forums, parents these days always ask each other about how to find tutors for their 5-year-old children. A lot of writing skill and mathematics practicing centers have been mushrooming to meet the increasingly high demand from parents.

Lien Huong, the manager of a writing practicing center located on Chua Boc street in Hanoi, said that right on the after-Tet days, a lot of parents have come and registered writing practicing classes for their children. Most of the children are preparing for the first grade. However, there are also the children who were born in 2006, which means that they will only begin going to primary school in 2012.

Lien said that some mothers registered two consecutive practicing hours for their children, saying that they cannot arrange time to pick up the children. However, the teachers of the center did not agree, saying that three consecutive practicing hours would be overloaded for the children.

“The children at the age of five remain small, who still prefer playing than learning, therefore, it is impossible to force them to learn too much,” Lien explained. “Moreover, their hands remain weak, and they get weary quickly. The thing that children at the age need to do is just to make acquainted with letters”.

At the age of four or five, many children feel like fish out of water when they come to classes. Some parents have to sit next to their children at the classes to calm the children down. A lot of parents have complained that children nowadays are less happy than the previous generations.

Dang Thi Le Thuy from Smile’s House, a children’s skill practicing center, said that most of parents want to provide as much knowledge to children as possible, fearing that they would lag behind classmates if they do not learn lessons in advance. However, she believes that this may bring more harm than good.

Psychologists believe that when children remain small, it would be a task beyond children’s capacity to ask them to write continuously for more than 20 minutes.

The difficulties children meet when practicing writing before their age would bring negative impacts to children, because this can decline the eagerness for learning. Meanwhile, there has been no scientific evidence showing that children’s handwriting will be better if they begin practicing writing soon.

City apartments see rash of burglaries
================================================== ===
Nguyen Huu Thai in Ha Kieu apartment building in Go Vap district has to permanently lock his motorbike with a big chain though they are placed in his house

When she stepped into her apartment, she found things strewn all over and a laptop worth VND15 million (US$730) and some jewels and cosmetics gone.

Nga, the victim, said: “After hearing about recent burglaries, I had installed a padlock but still could not prevent [the burglary].”

At Kien Thanh, many residents expressed concern about burglaries and wondered if they would become a victim some day.

Ha, owner of Apartment 807C, and his wife are civil servants who work all day long. They bought the apartment believing the security at the building would be good. But it has turned out to be a vain hope since it is regularly burgled.

“Last month I arrived home one day and found the door wide open. I immediately checked and saw things were in disorder.

“Fortunately, nothing was stolen. Perhaps, they saw us come back and left.”

Oanh, who lives next door, looked nervous because her husband works outside while she and her child remain at home. Their apartment was burgled three times in just one month.

Recently she lost all her expensive shoes, but just a few days later thieves broke in again and took away a cabinet with all her new footwear.

The third time she went into the kitchen only to find that a thief had stolen a brand-new mattress from the living room. Since burglars seem to break into her apartment easily, she fears for the safety of herself and her child.

Le Van Tung, head of the 114 residents’ committee at Kien Thanh, showed reporters some of the apartments burgled recently. The locks broken by thieves had been welded back but no one was sure if they had become any safer.

“Burglaries happen frequently. We tell the security guards about every case but nothing has happened.”

At Tay Thanh Apartments in Tan Phu District too, many people complained about burglaries. Le Van Du, who lives in Block I, said his expensive ornamental trees had been stolen. He showed the chains he had put around the trees to secure them. After Tet (Lunar New Year) last February, six trees disappeared one by one despite being chained. Two others had been cut in many places since the burglars could not remove them.

Late last month there was a burglary at Nhieu Loc C Apartment in Tan Phu District. Vo Ba Thinh, the victim, was still upset about the break-in three weeks earlier. He had locked the door and gone out but the thieves broke in and stole a laptop, two cell phones, and VND70 million (US$3,400) in cash.

Cua, an employee at the apartment block parking lot, said a similar burglary had occurred a month earlier.

To keep away burglars, many residents at Nhieu Loc C have fitted additional locks on their doors.

Rape threat

Trang, who lives alone in an apartment in Kien Thanh, still looks terrified. One day in late March, after she had left for university, thieves destroyed the lock brackets in her front door with acid and broke in to steal VND2 million in cash and some expensive cosmetics.

A few days later a man with a rough voice called her and said: “If you inform the police, do not go to school this Monday. I will rape you!”

Ngoc, Trang’s mother, became worried for her daughter and came to live with her. The following night, Ngoc answered the phone when a caller threatened to “take care” of Trang if she reported to the police.

“My daughter is going to take exams. But she is very disturbed after the burglary and rape threats.”

At Ha Kieu Apartments in Go Vap District, Quach Ngoc Phung, head of the Block A residents’ committee, said: “Last month my daughter’s boyfriend came for a visit and parked his SH scooter in the front porch, just two meters from our dining table.

“A few minutes later my husband saw a man trying to break the scooter’s lock. He rushed out, and they jumped on their motorbike and fled.”

Phung also said she witnessed a robbery in the block in March. “Two guys on a motorbike approached Quyen (a neighbor) when she was standing in front of her house, and snatched her gold chain so fast that the victim could not call out for help.”

Le Thi My Hang, head of the 52 residents’ committee at Ha Kieu, said: “On the morning of June 3, when I went home and opened the door, a black figure ran out into the living room [from inside]. Hearing me shout for help, the thief threw the laptop down and escaped. I discovered my purse containing VND350,000, my motorbike registration certificate, me driving license, and an ATM card were gone.”

Burglars targeting apartments seem to know about the daily routines there and the way around the block. They usually act at 7-10 am and 1-4 pm when few people use the stairs.

Residents at many apartment buildings think thieves come round to case the place, pretending to look for people, hang around at nearby cafes for long hours to observe each apartment, or even rent a room for a few months before acting.

Lieutenant-Colonel Pham Van Suu, a senior police officer in Go Vap District’s Ward 5, said many thieves and drug addicts were arrested recently at Ha Kieu and admitted the security was bad there.

“The police will improve security in the area and keep tabs on people staying temporarily and residents who are away to ensure security,” he said.

Major Ha Van Mieng, a senior officer at the Ward 13 Public Security Agency in District 6, confirmed there had been burglaries recently at Kien Thanh, but said its security was improved by having two more guards patrol it during the day.

Woman gets 9 years for trafficking women abroad
================================================== ==

The Supreme People’s Court in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday sentenced a woman to nine years in prison for trafficking seven women to Singapore and Malaysia in 2009 and 2010.

Dinh Thi Thu Hong, 45, of Dong Thap Province’s Chau Thanh District, had received a five-year term from a provincial court, but the Procuracy, arguing that it was too light considering the crime, had filed an appeal.

The families of Hong’s victims had also demanded a heavier sentence.

Hong was acquainted with two Vietnamese women living in Malaysia and Singapore who belonged to a gang selling Vietnamese girls to brothels and nightclubs in the two countries.

They got Hong to procure young, good-looking women from Vietnam by lying that they would get good jobs in those countries with salaries of VND15-20 million (US$730-970).

Between March 2009 and February 2010 she lured seven girls in her native district and arranged for to leave Vietnam and got paid nearly $500.

When the women landed in Singapore and Malaysia, they were received and controlled by the pimps who later forced them to work as prostitutes in brothels, karaoke houses, and bars.

Two of them managed to escape and return to Vietnam in April 2010 and reported to the police who arrested Hong and rescued the five other girls.

Foreigners ignore traffic law
================================================== =
VietNamNet Bridge – Taking abuse of the language barrier, many foreigners do not wear helmets while riding motorbikes in Hanoi streets.

It is popular to see foreign motorists without helmets in Hanoi’s old quarter, where streets are small and traffic police rarely patrol.

Some foreigners can speak Vietnamese very well but they pretend to not understand Vietnamese when they see traffic police officers.

Some foreigners don’t wear helmets on “xe om” (motorbike taxi) because helmets provided by xe om drivers are dirty.

Actually can still go shopping with her la. But just tell her up front that you will only be bringing her, have no money to buy gifts for her. Want come dun want go. Some of them really is just to have some one bringing them around sg. In fact some of the girls will ask you to buy a bottle of perfume or something for them then they pay the rest of the items themselves.

Disclaimer: highly dependent on individual.

Pedestrians need respect
==================================

Many people complain people in Vietnam rarely walk and rely too heavily on motorbikes.

While people in other countries are willing to walk for several kilometers to work, supermarket or metro rail station, the Vietnamese depend on the motorbike even when their destination is within walking distance.

Is it true that Vietnamese don’t usually walk because they don’t like it?

It seems that foreigners, who have a habit of walking in their home country, also prefer riding bikes when they are in Vietnam. The reason for their new choice here isn’t curiosity only. They are concerned about the safety of walking in the street, as Vietnam has little space dedicated to pedestrians. Newly built bridges, streets, and big highways all lack the necessary space for basic safety.

Meanwhile, when there is a sidewalk, it is taken up by motorbike parking and street vendors. During traffic jams motorbikes will aggressively and impatiently use sidewalks as extra lanes. Even though the pedestrian’s space is being invaded, they often receive cursed and injured by motorbike riders when they happen to be in the way.

The zebra crossings are also completely disregarded by riders, who are allowed to turn right on red under Vietnam’s laws. They sometimes drive straight through red lights even if they happen to be on the wrong side of the road.

It’s not that Vietnamese people don’t like walking, but in fact, they don’t have a choice. No one wants to endure the danger, the noisy streets, asthmatic exhausts, and abuse by motorbike riders.

If agencies in charge of traffic infrastructure don’t give more thoughts to pedestrians, people will keep turning to motorbikes, which will worsen traffic and related problems.
