------------------------------------------------------

An old man boarded a luxury private yatch for a private party. After saying hellos to his friends, the yatch sets off for a round the island trip and the man was hanging out at the bar counter. That's when the sight of a pretty well heeled girl caught his eyes, so he walked right up to her and said "how much it cost to fuck u tonight?" the girl got very upset, swing her right hand backwards and was about to execute a very hard slap right on that old man's face when suddenly old man says "let me rephrase it, would u go to bed with me for us$1million?"

Immediately, the girl gently swings her hand forward and says "my name is Judy and I actually finds u look familiar, where have we met before?" so old man shake her hand and said "I am John!" and they chatted a little bit.

Then the man says "so, would u go to bed tonight... For us$100?"

The girl got a bit upset and said "hey, wat u think I am?"

Old man said "what u are, we already established that just now, and now, it's only negotiation ma!"

The vietnamese portion in ur message is actually from a village girl or lowly educated girl, she is using all the wrong words or slang, so even with a translator software u also unable to translate much. So no use to waste time on such messages unless u first learn the proper Vietnanese and then learn the uneducated version. Its a long process, not easy.

This may not necessarily be from a 'village girl' or 'lowly educated girl' as Deptrai gor gor says, but rather that's how many young Vietnamese sms - without accents, words are not spelled correctly and/or short form/curtailed or mispelt on purpose, etc.

My translation as follows:

Sincere, knows how to care (for others), gentlemanly and romantic, loves others as he does himself, able to accept sentiment/emotion from the opposite (partner), obviously I from him as well. Will only reply to messages with photos attached, thanks for taking the time to read my profile.

It would be hard to get the above translated properly on any software, mainly because you don't know the correct accents. If you dont know the language, you won't have the vocabulary. If you don't have the vocabulary you won't know the proper accents. If you don't have the proper accents, no software will recognize the word you're trying to translate.

University graduates go selling vegetables, working as taxi motorbike drivers
================================================== =============
VietNamNet Bridge – After four or five years of sweating blood and tears for studying at universities, a lot of graduates go selling vegetables at markets or working as taxi motorbike drivers, simply because they cannot find the jobs fitting their training majors.

University graduates work as sellers at tea shops

In June 2011, the story about a university graduate which had two “red degrees” (the degrees for excellent university graduates), had to run a small private tea shop, raised a hot debate among the public.

The female graduate is Ngo Thi Phuong T, 23, from Thai Nguyen, who finished the Hanoi University of Business and Technology in finance & banking and accountancy majors. However, in the last year, she has been earning her living as an accountant or a bank officer, but as the owner of tea shop on the pavement of Nguyen Khang Street in Cau Giay district in Hanoi.

Commenting about the case, a lot of people said that the case shows the big waste of the Vietnamese drain, while others pointed out that this is the result of the bad education method being applied in Vietnam, under which graduates still lack necessary skills for their works.

Phuong T is not alone. A lot of other university graduates have been working in the fields which have no relations with their trained majors. Especially, they have to undertake simple jobs such as selling tea, working as taxi motorbike driver or selling vegetable at the markets – the jobs that can be done without the knowledge from universities.

Son, a graduate of the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, left Hanoi for VUng Tau City to work as an engineer at a oil and gas company 10 years ago, from which he received very high pay. However, unfortunately, Son has got redundant after the company laid off workers. Finally, the engineer who once worked in the high-technology field now has to earn their living as a taxi motorbike driver.

A colleague of Son, Phan Van Thinh, born in 1988, has also been working as a taxi motorbike driver for the last several years. Thinh finished the information technology faculty of the University for Business and Technology, but he could not find a job in the trained field. Thinh said that taxi motorbike driver is a dangerous job: he could not get pay from customers after serving them.

Kim Duyen, an excellent literature graduate of the Hue University, has been working as a worker at a footwear company in Binh Duong province since the day she finished the school. Duyen said she needs to take some jobs to earn her living, therefore, she decided to leave Hue City for Binh Duong, where it is easy to find a job at garment or footwear companies.

Ngoc B, a graduate of the economics university of the Hanoi National University, is now helping her mother to take care for the vegetable shop at their home village. B said that she plans to take care for the shop for just a short time before finding a job. However, it is still unclear when this comes true.

Why do university graduates have to take simple works?

The university graduates have been refused by employers after they many times applied for jobs. Phuong T said that she once worked as a customer relationship officer for a bank, but she later decided to quit the job, because she thought the work did not fit her. T wished to work as an auditor, an officer of the capital source division of payment division. However, she did not have enough experiences for the posts.

As for Son, he said that after a period of working, he got tired with his job because he could not upgrade himself to get adapted to the new circumstances of the works.

Now Son feels satisfactory with his new job as a taxi motorbike driver, because the job is not too demanding.

In sgp, “red degree” (scholars) is more important than Experience :D

Graduates cannot find jobs in spite of having “red degree”
================================================== ========

VietNamNet Bridge – Many students fail to find appropriate jobs after graduating, though they have “red degree” (the degree given to excellent graduates). Some of them decide to take the university entrance exam once again; the others try to learn a trade in order to get temporary jobs.

Experience is more important than “red degree”

Graduating means that students will no longer depend on their parents and have to live on their own. However, many graduates find it hard to apply for a job due to their lack of skills and experience.

Thu Huong and Thinh are now regretting about their choices. Huong said that before attending university she knew very little about the major she was going to learn and its job opportunities. After having graduated, they tried to find a job but did not succeed because things they learned in universities diverge from reality. They had to work as manual workers in factories to earn their living.

Ha, former student of faculty of journalism said that after graduating, she was very confident when applying for a job. However, after two months of trial, she was not accepted by the employers. They told her that although she had a good degree, she still did not have enough skills.

Ha said that she learned many theories at university, but to put the theories into practice is not easy. While other students worked as collaborators for newspapers, she only focused on studying at school. Therefore, her experiences were very limited, which made her fail to fulfill the task in the job trial period.

After some unsuccessful attempts to find a job, she had to attend an intermediate pharmacy course. Her family will help her open a drugstore when she finishes the course.

Bad consequence

The bad situation is caused by the fact that students are not well directed when they are still at high school. The graduates who cannot adapt to reality have to give up their ideals due to life pressures.

Some graduates fail to find appropriate jobs try to apply for manual jobs, but it is not as easy as they thought. Their university degree is now the obstacle. The employers do not want to hire university graduates because they are too… well qualified. According to the employers, university graduates never satisfy with the job they are doing and always look for another job.

The others who cannot find appropriate jobs but do not want to become workers decide to take the entrance exam into other “hot” universities, hoping that this time their choices will be right. The rest decide to take intermediate courses in order to get a temporary job.

“The fact that graduates have to learn a trade to find jobs is a great waste for our society. All the money and time invested in their study become fruitless,” said Professor Pham Minh Hac, Chairman of Vietnamese Former Teachers Association. Moreover, the failure of some people caused by vocational misdirection may lead to some bad effects on the society.

Dr. Pham Manh Ha from the Department of Psychology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities said that universities should teach students necessary “soft skills,” such as job interview skills or communicating skills, so that they can quickly find appropriate jobs after graduating. Besides expertise, social knowledge is an important factor that helps students integrate with the labor market easily.

brother... u need to go vdict.com. type in the spelling without the diacritic mark. u will see lots of possible (same) words with different diacritic mark. u need to analyze it one by one by yourself to get the correct word of the correct diacritic mark. it's a lot of homework though... and sometimes the words combination are too cheem and many ppl cant get what they are trying to say...

if u type in english and try to translate it into TV using any translating software... u might get the correct sentence technically but not appropriately... i sense that many vb got turned off by the reply in TV from ppl who use translator. they think u r wanna-be and trying to be smart...:D

just my 2 cent.

International stars to welcome New Year’s Eve in Vietnam
================================================== =======

VietNamNet Bridge – Famous artists, singers, DJs of Vietnam and the world will take part in the Heineken Countdown Party on the evening of December 31, in HCM City and Nha Trang.

Another taxi company banned from Saigon airport
================================================== ===

The Ministry of Transport on Thursday suspended another taxi company from operating at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City for various violations, online newspaper VnExpress reported.

Happy Taxi is the third company to be banned from the airport, after Petrolimex Taxi and Festival Taxi .

The decisions were made following an inspection by ministry inspectors that began on December 16 of 11 taxi firms operating at the airport.

Thach Nhu Sy, deputy chief of Transport Ministry’s Inspectorate, said Happy Taxi acquired licenses for 270 taxis, but only more than 100 are operating. It then sold the remaining licenses to other taxi companies in Mekong Delta provinces.

The inspected taxis did not post prices as regulated, he added.

A few trips ago to HCMC, i experienced cheating from a taxi driver from the Saigon Comfort Delgro, blue colour taxi. Me n my wife got on from TSN and were heading to Ben Thanh area, after we reached, the taxi driver asked for 40000d on top of the meter fare saying it for the gantry charge when exiting the airport. Where got such thing, my wife argued with him and only gave him 15000d on top of the fare.
From then on we never take the blue colour taxis. Such behaviours will only tarnish the company's name. But to them its normal and they dont care about company name, fill their pockets is more important.

Teachers dream of “Tet bonus”
========================================

VietNamNet Bridge – While office and business workers have been anxious these days to know how much they will get for Tet bonuses, teachers say Tet bonus proves to be an “abstract dream” for them.

Nguyen Thi Dung, Headmaster of the Kim Son Secondary School in Gia Lam district of Hanoi, said that the word “Tet bonus” is not true for teachers, while what they receive should be called “the small year-end gifts.”

“We anticipate that the year-end gifts would be the very small sums of money that we would feel self-pity when receiving,” Dung said.

The state budget does not allocate any spending items for Tet bonus for teachers. The “year end gifts” for teachers would be sourced from the budget for regularly expenses that schools can save. Dung said that in the last two years, every teacher got 700,000 dong, and the same gift is expected to be awarded to them this year for their devotion to the education.

Bui Kim Thuy, Headmaster of the Hoang Hoa Tham Primary School in Ba Dinh district of Hanoi, said that the teachers of the schools call the sums of money the receive the “Tet allowance”. It is expected that every of them would receive 500,000 dong in Tet allowance, the same with the previous year.

Phung Thi Tinh, Headmaster of the Cam Linh Secondary School in Ba Vi district, simply said: “Where to arrange money for Tet bonuses?” The teachers of the school have been leading poor lives, because they do not have extra income from private tutoring or any other extra income. Meanwhile, they always have to persuade students to go to school and not to drop out.

Tinh said in 2010, every teacher was awarded 200,000 dong from the school, and another sum of 100,000 dong, which was the gift from the student parents’ association.

The schools in the suburbs of HCM City say the concepts “Tet bonus” or “the 13th month salary” have never been existing for them. While the schools in inner city can save money in spending to award their teachers, the schools in the suburb areas cannot. Therefore, poor teachers always have “poor Tet celebrations.”

Vo Thi Truc Mai, a teacher of the Binh Khanh Nursery School in Can Gio District, complained that the school’s leaders have informed that there would be no Tet bonus this year, because the school has spent all of its money to upgrade the material facilities.

Meanwhile, the teachers in Quang Ngai province say they would feel happy with the modest Tet bonus of 100,000 dong, because they know they are happier than others, who never receive Tet bonuses.

When asked about the expected Tet bonuses, Nguyen Tra, Headmaster of the Tra Nhung Primary School in Tay Tra district, smiled and said: “I have never heard about Tet bonuses and Tet gifts over the last eight years, since I began working for the school in the mountainous area.”

“In 2010, we heard that we would get Tet bonus, which made us excited. However, the Tet bonus did not come. Only in September 2011, we got 100,000 dong which was explained as the Tet bonus, which we should have not got February,” he said.

According to Tra, in order to have money to give Tet bonuses, schools need to have a lot of funds with the money collected from different sources. However, in mountainous areas, such funds cannot exist.

Tra is not alone. All other teachers in the Tay Tra district and other mountainous districts of Quang Ngai province are facing the same situation.

Tran Kim Mau, a teacher in Quang Ngai City, said that he has returned from the trip to the home village to carry rice to the mountain place. The rice would feed them when he teaches for the Ba Le Secondary School in Ba To district.

Five foreigners arrested for swindling
=============================================
Police in Ho Chi Minh City have detained four Chinese and a Taiwanese national who used hi-tech facilities to defraud others of their bank deposits in many countries.

Yesterday morning, police raided a house in the My Khanh 2 apartment building in District 7 and caught Wang Xi, 22, Zhou Yong Shang, 31, and Fu Yu Sheng, 29, using hi-tech electronics to swindle their victims.

From their testimonies, the police later arrested the ringleader, Liu Kuei Han, 33, and another culprit, Hsu Hsuan Yu, 27, in another location.

The police seized four computers, a CPU, a monitor, eight walkie-talkies, five mobile phones, and numerous other pieces of electronic equipment from the group.

The foreigners said that after arriving in Vietnam in October 2011 they used hi-tech telecom equipment and the Internet to the steal bank account numbers of many citizens in different countries and territories.

They later contacted their victims, claiming to be officials from banks, prosecutor’s offices or courts in the victims’ countries, and informed the accounts holders that their deposits had been used secretly by criminals for illegal purposes.

They then persuaded the victims to transfer their deposits to a bank account designated by them for safety.

They falsely told their victims that the account was controlled by relevant authorities.

Many people, for fear of losing their deposits, followed the swindlers’ advice, and after their money was put in that account, the ring would withdraw all of it.

The swindlers confessed that they had appropriated 200,000 yuan (US$31,650) from their victims.

The police are continuing their investigation.

Another sad case of VN woman in oversea..........

Vietnamese woman killed by husband in Taiwan
================================================== =

The police in Taoyuan, Taiwan, have arrested Chen Li Sheng for killing his 29-year-old Vietnamese wife, Pham Thi Thanh Truc, and throwing her body into the sea 6 days ago.

The arrest of Sheng was made at 10 pm on December 26, 2 days after local residents found Truc’s body floating in the sea near Taoyuan, where Sheng and his wife had been living, Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper reported.

According to the police, Truc got married to Sheng, a taxi driver, through a broker in 2003. The couple has 2 daughters, 5 and 6 years old.

Sheng often picked quarrels with Truc and beat her since she could not give birth to a boy. Suffering from domestic violence, Truc had asked for protection from local authorities 3 times, but Sheng continued to abuse her.

On December 22, the couple arrived at a local court for divorce procedures. Later on the same day, Sheng strangled Truc to death and then tied a piece of rock to her neck before throwing her body into the sea.

Calling for help

On December 27 afternoon Pham Thi Hoa, Truc’s sister, came to Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper’s headquarter in Ho Chi Minh City to ask for help.

A reporter then took Hoa to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in HCMC for assistance.

Lin Chen Chou, an official at the office, said he had been informed of the tragedy and was working with the HCMC Foreign Affairs Department and the Vietnamese Economic and Cultural Office in Taiwan to handle the case.

The office asked Hoa to submit a report on the incident to the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs, asking the agency for assistance in going to Taiwan to receive and repatriate Truc’s body.

The office will grant a visa to the representative of Truc’s family right after the person obtains a passport, Lin said.

In Truc’s case, the Taiwanese Committee for Compensation to Criminal Victims is likely to help in demanding compensation, Lin said.

“We are very sorry,” he said.

An aborted dream

Hoa told Nguoi Lao Dong that in a conversation with her from Taiwan, Truc had said tearfully, “I accepted the marriage only because I wanted to help our family, but now, I’d rather die than live in such a terrible situation…”

Truc got married to Sheng with the hope that she could save money to build a house for her parents, who have been long living on a boat.

But Sheng gave her family just VND5 million (US$238) as payment for the wedding held in HCMC, Hoa said.

After Truc left Vietnam, her family incurred a debt of VND2 million which they had spent on her wedding ceremony, Hoa said.

When Truc arrived in Taiwan, she knew that her husband’s family was poor too and had to live in a rented house.

During her 9 years in Taiwan, Truc returned to Vietnam twice and had no money to buy any gift for her family.

In one of the two occasions, she had to borrow VND4 million from an acquaintance in Vietnam to buy a necklace as a present for her mother, Hoa said.

My New Year resolution: Travel more in Vietnam
================================================
In just a short day, 2011 will officially be coming to a close and 2012 will begin. Many look to this special occasion, myself included, as an opportunity for a fresh start, to try something new, or to break a bad habit. A popular tradition, that I always take part in, for those who share this outlook is making a New Year’s Resolution, or a commitment that someone makes to themselves to accomplish a goal in the New Year. This year I’m trying to stay away from the standard, ‘eat healthier and exercise more’ resolution and go for something a little more specific.

I’ve now been living in the country for over a year! Although my time here seems to have flown by, during my stay I have been able to find time to enjoy many things about the country; my favorite of which is the food. For the past year I have tried a seemingly endless number of dishes, either on the street, in markets, or at restaurants. I was even brave enough to try things I would have never thought of eating before, like crickets and hot vit lon! Even though the food is wonderful, and I can’t seem to get enough of it, sometimes I feel lazy for eating out as often as I do.

For this reason, my first resolution for 2012 is to learn how to cook some of the Vietnamese meals I love so dearly. Specifically, I will learn how to cook at least one traditional dish a month. This way I will not only feel less lazy but when I return home, to visit my friends and family, I can share the dishes with them as well.

One of the reasons I initially left home to live abroad was to give myself the chance to travel. During my year here I have had the opportunity to visit several of Vietnam’s neighboring countries, such as Indonesia and Malaysia. Unfortunately, as I have visited other areas I have somewhat neglected Vietnam. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had my fair share of adventure in Vietnam. This year I got to canyoning, where you rock climb down waterfalls in Da Lat, I kayaked in Ha Long Bay, I snorkeled in Phu Quoc, and I even got to attend a Vietnamese wedding in the countryside! I had a great time but for me it hasn’t been enough.

So, for my second resolution I will visit more of Vietnam. For example, I haven’t found the time to visit Hue, and taste its great food, or learn how to make a lantern Hoi An, but I desperately want to go! I want to take the train to Sapa! I want to lay on the beach in Con Dao! To do this I vow to visit at least one new Vietnamese city every month! Not only will it be great to see the country but I could also use the vacation!

There you have it, my resolutions for 2012! I’m going to do my best to make sure that my goals are met but sadly, an overwhelming majority of New Year’s resolutions, around 80%, fail for one reason or another. But now that I’ve written them down and told you about them I think I’m more likely to succeed! Now it’s your turn, make a New Year’s resolution for yourself and write it down, hopefully you’ll have as much fun with yours as I’ll have with mine!

Da Lat gears up for bloom boom
========================================

VietNamNet Bridge – The Central Highlands resort city of Da Lat, already famous as the City of Flowers, is now the City of Flower Festivals.

The city will welcome 2012 with millions of colourful flowers as the latest edition of the biennial Flower Festival gets underway on New Year's Eve.

The five-day festival will honour those who grow and sell flowers by presenting them to the public in a floral parade and awarding a slew of prizes. The festival will feature 21 cultural activities including flower exhibitions and music and dance performances that more than 1,000 artists will participate in. An estimated 300,000 visitors including foreigners are expected to attend the festival, according to Truong Van Thu, vice chairman of the People's Committee of Lam Dong Province.

The opening ceremony of the festival, called Da Lat Flowers – the World of Colours on Saturday, will have a special display of around 120,000 tulip branches as well as flower species specific to Da Lat.

Meanwhile, thousands of species of flowers from Da Lat and other localities nationwide as well as other countries will be on display at different locations in the city.

Around the Xuan Huong Lake that is located in the heart of the city, several stands will present flowers most commonly grown in Da Lat.

Among the more prominent flower displays of the festival are: a Space for Da Lat Flowers around the Xuan Huong Lake; a Slope of Cherries on Le Dai Hanh Street; a Wild Flower Hill at the Da Lat Flower Park; and a Carpet of Wild Flowers at the Ba Huyen Thanh Quan Park.

The opening ceremony and the festival's main events will be telecast live, organisers said.

More than flowers

Apart from the magnificent floral displays, a scientific seminar on flowers and a trade and tourism exhibition will be organised.

The exhibition stalls will present the goods and services of both domestic and foreign companies.

Other festivities highlighting the area's most famed products will include a wine event on January 3, which will offer for free thousands of litres of Da Lat wine.

A food festival, a street festival called Flowers and Light, and a street fashion show at the Xuan Huong Park are expected to be popular events.

A parade of 15 vehicles bedecked with fresh flowers will weave through Da Lat's main streets during the festival.

"We're doing many things to make Da Lat as pretty as possible," said Nguyen Vu Hoang, director of the festival's organising board.

The Da Lat Urban Works Management Company will be responsible for setting up large panels of flowers and flower towers throughout the city.

The Da Lat Flower Garden, where the international flower exhibition will take place, is being rearranged and parterres replanted to make sure that the flowers will bloom at festival time.

All households in Da Lat have been encouraged to grow flowers; and horticulturists are caring for ochna trees along the city's main streets so they will be in bloom as the festival begins.

Ninety-two businesses, including many tourism agencies like Vietravel, Ha Noi Tourism, SaigonTourist and Lua Viet are actively involved in preparing for the festival.

More foreign tourists robbed in HCM City
=============================================
More foreign visitors have been robbed in HCMC in recent times, sparking concerns over tourists’ safety among tour operators.

A senior source from an international travel agency said there were nine robberies reported by his firm’s guests from September 15 to October 1. They happened at major tourist sites like Dong Khoi Street, September 23 Park adjacent to Ben Thanh Market, Me Linh Square and Ben Thanh Market area.

Normally there are two robbers riding a motorbike and robbing walking tourists of their bags or precious items. And such robbers can cause physical injuries as well. “The crime is on the rise, making us worry about our tourists’ safety and the image of Vietnamese tourism,” the source told the Daily on Wednesday.

He said his company had written to the HCMC Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism proposing ways to increase tourist protection.

The HCMC Tourism Association said multiple tour operators and hotels had in the last few months reported many of their guests were attacked by robbers. For example, Huong Sen Hotel on Dong Khoi Street reported four robberies around the hotel.

The association is preparing to submit a formal request to the authorities to take prompt action to protect tourists.

The city’s tourism department said in its review report 2011 that no major progress had been made regarding the enhancement of tourist safety. The measures adopted to protect visitors from harassments by unregistered taxicabs and vendors have failed to produce good results.

If the issue is not tackled well, the city will run the risk of losing its reputation as a safe destination for local and foreign visitors.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has recently asked local authorities to make the tourism environment more secure.

HCMC this year has attracted some 3.5 million international visitors, increasing 12.9% over last year. The city’s tourism industry has earned VND49 trillion in revenue, a rise of 19.5% against 2010. The city is looking to welcome 3.78 million foreign visitors next year.

Poor woman returns winning lottery tickets
==================================================

VietNamNet Bridge – Pham Thi Lanh, a lottery seller in the southern province of Long An, gave back 10 lottery tickets which win top prizes worth VND6.6 billion ($330,000) to a man who bought the tickets on the nod.

Lanh promised to sell 20 lottery tickets on credit to a man named Do Ngoc Tuan, but Tuan did not receive the tickets yet. Finally, ten of the 20 tickets won prizes, including four with the top prizes, totaling VND6.6 billion (around $330,000). Lanh did not keep the winning tickets but gave them back to Tuan.

This happened in mid-November but until now local people in Ben Luc town still mentioned it. They were very surprised because Lanh is extremely poor. Her family now lives in a hired house.

Tuan, the ticket buyer, is also very poor. He has been working as a tricycle driver for 25 years. Though Lanh only promised to sell 20 tickets worth VND200,000 ($10) in nod to Tuan, without receiving payment from Tuan nor giving the tickets to him, Lanh still gave the tickets back to Tuan, though she had known that these were winning tickets.

Tuan recalled: “I received a phone call from Lanh. I thought that she called to ask me pay for the lottery tickets. But it turned out that she informed me of the ten winning tickets.”

Tuan presented one top prize lottery ticket to Lanh, plus VND200,000 of debt. “I pay you the debt and present you one winning ticket…” Tuan said. All witnesses clapped their hands to congratulate two lucky poor persons.

Plus the ticket presented by Tuan, Lanh also had a winning ticket. She received VND3 billion ($150,000) in total. Lanh has bought a house with the money.

Tuan still works as a tricycle driver. “I’m still a worker. This is my job,” the lucky man said.

Hotels booked up for Tet
============================

VietNamNet Bridge – Most hotels at tourist destinations around the country have reported full bookings for the Tet (Lunar New Year) holidays in January.

Standard hotels (three-star and above) in coastal destinations like Nha Trang, Phu Quoc, and Phan Thiet reported no vacancies before and after Lunar New Year (January 23).

According to HCM City-based travel firms, most domestic Tet tours, especially by air – like tours to Nha Trang, Phu Quoc, and Con Dao – have also been fully booked.

But destinations in northern provinces have proved to be less attractive, with rooms still being available even in Ha Long Bay.

Le Huu Duc, director of the Sai Gon-Ha Long Hotel, explained that tourists from the south are not keen to go to the north during this period since the weather is chill while northerners often visit pagodas during Tet holidays.

* Travel agents launch website

The Viet Nam Society of Travel Agents (VISTA) has launched an official website www.vista.net.vn.

The website will help travel agents share information between themselves, the public and national authorities.

It will provide information about tourism in Viet Nam, regional tourism services and information to help promote the tourism industry in Viet Nam, said Vu The Binh, the society's director.

Yes bro GQ! That's exactly. I was wrong long time ago when I thought they got 'love at first sight'. Now I know this is all bullshit...

I realise their feeling movement is something like:
Thich(when u sit her)>rat thich(when u sit her with exponentially increased tips and maybe some LT session)>buc boi(when they see u sit other girl)>buon(when u no sms them alrdy)>vui(when u go find them and sit them and them back with more money)> rat vui + thich (when u fark them back)> thuong (when u can fark them for free although in fact it's in credit)>buon(when they go back wet nam and u no gv allowance monthly)

The cycle repeats again when they find new carrot. Hehe :D Viet scene is fun :)

The toi/ban used here doesn't really mean she's looking at you as a male platonic male friend. IMHO, the vb think he's using translator so they use very proper TV and toi/ban because they learn toi=I and ban=you in school. If she put anh it might come brother/english.

This theory I learnt from KT. And my no1 told me the same reason as KT when I ask her how come she use toi/ban in SMS sometimes.

The time when u and your bg/Bx quarrel I think they will use anh/em(when u usually use ox/Bx with her) and anh/toi (when u usually use anh/em with her)

Vdict wont teach such stuff...

HCMC flower and book festivals to welcome Tet
================================================== =====
Two big flower and book festivals will take place in Ho Chi Minh City next week to welcome the coming lunar new year, which falls on January 23.

Artisans around Ho Chi Minh City are sprinting to finish the decorations for the annual Nguyen Hue Flower Street Festival, which will be open from January 20-26 in District 1 to celebrate the coming Tet holiday.

Tiled “Vietnam – Que Huong Toi” (Vietnam – My Homeland), the festival will feature traditional Vietnamese cakes for the Tet holiday, including “banh chung,” “banh day,” and “banh tet,” and national costumes like “quai thao” and conical hats, which will be made of thousands of flowers.

A 12m-long and 5m-high model of a dragon, the animal of the year in the lunar calendar, made of hyacinth wood, will also be a highlight of the event. It will be put at the beginning of the street, together with five smaller dragons representing the five basic elements of metal, wood, water, fire and earth.

Painter Minh Phuong, who is in charge of the huge dragon, said her team is willing to work overnight to finish the work on time.

Architect Pham Thi Thuy Ai, designer of the Nguyen Hue Flower Street, told Tuoi Tre that a giant picture titled “Rong Chuc Phuc” (Blessing Dragon), made of around 500 vases of daisies and gerbera flowers together with 5000 lanterns with the wish of a peaceful new year, will be displayed at the end of the street.

More than 300,000 vases of flowers will also be put along the street for spectators to enjoy.

Tran Hung Viet, general director of Saigontourist, the organizer of the festival, said the festival aims to showcase the beauty of Vietnam’s mainland and islands.

“Images of the sea and islands will be featured at the festival in the form beaches, coconut trees and marine animal models made of flowers,” he said. “The light effect will also promise to bring visitors a gorgeous festival.”

At the same time, a book street festival titled “Truyen Thong, Hien Tai va Tuong Lai” (Tradition, Present and Past) will also take place on another stretch of Nguyen Hue Street, as well as Mac Thi Buoi and Ngo Duc Ke streets in District 1.

Themed “Con Duong Truyen Thong” (The Street of Tradition), the event on Mac Thi Buoi will showcase books about Vietnamese history, traditional cultural values, and HCMC in the past.

New books published by local and foreign publishers will be displayed on Nguyen Hue Street together with modern tools for e-books and digital documents under the theme of “Con Duong Giao Thoa Hien Tai Huong Toi Tuong Lai” (The Street of The Meeting between Present and Future).

For its part of “Con Duong Tuong Lai” (The Street of Future), Ngo Duc Ke Street will gather books and documents about the city’s projects in the next few years.

The street also includes children’s and braille books, as well as a play zone for children and book cafés.

The festival, which will gather books from many publishers around the city including Tong Hop, Fahasa, Phuong Nam and Van Hoa Van Nghe, will also hold meetings for visitors with local writers.

Hue - Vietnam's imperial capital
===================================
Between Vietnam's largest city and its capital lies the ancient city of Hue, a place that is steep in ancient history and culture.

Located in the province of Thua Thien-Hue in central Vietnam, about 700 kilometers south of Hanoi and about 1,100 kilometres north of Ho Chi Minh is Hue, the former capital of the Nguyen dynasty. The city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site along the banks of the Perfume River, is home to many famous historical monuments that are certainly worth feasting your eyes on.

In 1802, Emperor Gia Long of the Nguyen dynasty established control over all of Vietnam. He made Hue the national capital and from 1802 till 1945, the city was the centre of the Nguyens, a feudal dynasty of warlord kings. Hue's star faded in 1945 when the last Nguyen emperor, Bao Dai abdicated the throne and a newly formed communist government moved the capital to Hanoi. Because of the city's position near the border between North and South Vietnam, it sustained much devastation during the Vietnam War. Some of the greatest damage to the city happened during the Tet Offensive in 1968, which left many of her beautiful buildings in shambles. Thankfully, in recent years, the government of Vietnam has made much effort to restore the ancient monuments of Hue to their former glory, so today visitors can step back in time and marvel at the brilliance of the Nguyen dynasty.

The grandest of all the historical monuments is the Imperial City, a walled citadel, palace and forbidden inner sanctum that was once the seat of the Nguyen emperors. The grounds of this imperial city were surrounded by a two kilometre by two-kilometre wall and the walls are surrounded by a moat, which was created with water from the Perfume River. Built by Emperor Gia in 1804, the Imperial Palace is a magical oasis with ornate gates, bridges and statues, rooms and halls with intricately detailed columns and roofs inlaid with gold, pretty courtyards, gardens and lotus ponds. It was declared a UNESCO Heritage Site in 1993 and continues to be restored today.

Many other notable historical monuments can be found along the Perfume River, among them are the burial grounds of the eight Nguyen emperors, including Minh Mang, Khai Dinh, Gia Long and Tu Duc. Much like the pharaohs of Egypt, the Nguyen emperors would begin planning and construction their royal tombs while they were still alive. Most of the tombs face the Imperial City and consist of two complexes, one for the coffin and one for the funeral services. Each tomb has a different design that reflects the unique personality and taste of the emperor buried within it. The tomb of Tu Duc on Duong Xuan Mountain about eight kilometres from the city centre is one of the most visited because of its regal architecture and idyllic location amidst a hilly pine forest and picturesque lakes.

Another must-see attraction is the Thien Mu Pagoda, the largest pagoda and the official symbol of Hue City. It was named after a mythical figure named Thien Mu. Legend has it that a celestial being in the form of an old lady named Thien Mu would appear every night on the hill where the pagoda now stands. She told the people that in order for the country to prosper, a pagoda needed to be built on the site where she appeared. The Nguyen lords heeded her advice and they each contributed to the pagoda's creation in one way or other. Lord Nguyen Pguc Chu introduced a giant bell and a stele erected on the back of a marble tortoise and King Thieu Tri built the seven story high Phuoc Duyen tower. Like the Imperial Palace, the pagoda has undergone extensive restoration and visitors can view its many antiquities today.

When to go and where to stay

The best times to visit Hue are in the months of March and August when it is not too hot or wet. For a taste of what royal life might have been like, get a room at the Imperial Hotel (8 Hung Vuong Boulevard, Hue City, +84-54-388-2222 +84-54-388-2222, [email protected], www.imperial-hotel.com.vn). Situated in the heart of the city, on the bank of the Perfume River, just a short walk from the Truong Tien Bridge and Hue Train Station, this hotel offers luxurious rooms with scenic views as well as a pool, spa and a good selection of in-house restaurants and bars. A cheaper alternative is the Orchid Hotel (30A Chu Van An Street, Hue City, +84-54-383-1177 +84-54-383-1177, [email protected]; www.orchidhotel.com.vn), a cozy, centrally location hotel with great service.

The good of modern time
================================

VietNamNet Bridge – A 14-year-old boy who self sacrificed himself to rescue his friends, a pregnant railway worker who rescued a baby, a rubbish collector who gave back $2,000… are good examples reported on the local media in 2011.

1. Brave boys

On August 6, on his way back home, Pham Quang Vinh, 14, in Binh Thanh commune, Duc Trong district, the central highland province of Lam Dong, saw four children who were reaching up their hands in the middle of a deep hole. Vinh immediately plunged himself to the hole to draw each of kid to the shore.

Vinh, a 7 grade student, has been praised as a hero. The local youth organization rewarded the boy’s braveness.

Tran Van Nguyen, also 14, in the central province of Quang Ngai self sacrificed several times to rescue other people. In his third time in early September, Nguyen was dead after taking a small kid from the middle of a local river to the bank.

The Youth Union and Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan posthumously presented the “Brave Youth” medal to Nguyen.

2. Pregnant rail guards rescue babies

On October 20, after lifting down the barrier to make way for a train that was running into the terminal in the central city of Hue, Nguyen Thi Nhan, 26, a railroad guard at Binh Tri Thien Railway Management Company, saw a baby standing on the track just 55m from the coming train.

Despite her 6-month pregnancy, Nhan immediately gave signals to the train to slow down and rushed to take the boy away. It wasn’t until a long after the incident that Nhan could regain her calm.

The Vietnam Railway Corporation issued a decision to commend and reward Nhan for saving the 2-year-old boy. Nhan had previously been praised and awarded by her company.

A similar case happened in Phu Yen Province in August when 23-year-old Tran Thi Xuan, also a railway guard, saved a 20-month-old boy from being hit by a train in Tuy An District.

The boy, whose name is Nguyen Ngoc Bau, suddenly stepped into the track while a train was approaching him at 60 kph. Xuan was later awarded a certificate of merit and VND2 million (US$96) for her brave act.

3. Waste collector gives back $2,000

Mr. Cho, a waste collector in the central city of Da Nang picked up a plastic bag on the road, with VND45 million (over $2,000) inside. He brought the bag to the local police station, asking police officers to give the bag back to the owner. Police then returned the bag to a local woman.

Some people said Cho was foolish because his family is very poor but Cho said that he could not spend money of others.

After a traffic accident, Cho could not work as a xe tho driver (carrying goods by bicycle) and he has become a waste collector. The old man earns only VND45,000-50,000 ($2-$3) a day.

Local police presented a certificate of merit and VND2 million ($100) bonus to the man.

4. Poor man with free transport service for students

The image of a middle-aged man who drives a home-made vehicle to carry poor students to and from school everyday has been very popular to residents of Hamlet 7 in Hoc Mon district, HCM City.

Most of residents in Hamlet 7 are poor people who do not have stable jobs and vehicles to take their children to school, which is over 3km far.

A local man named Nguyen Van Hung made a vehicle to take around 20 children in the hamlet to school for free, with eight trips a day.

His wife initially did not agree with her husband’s “work for nothing” act but as his act is useful for many people, she now warmly supports him.

5. 68-year-old man cleans up street at night

For the last 4-5 years, a thin, snowy-haired old man has cleaned the street of Chinese Vietnamese in Ward 11, District 5, HCM City every midnight. That is Mr. To Tien Ha, 68.

The homeless man has been living for nearly half of a century at the corner of the street. He does every job to earn his living, from washing dishes, stevedoring, etc.

He has been a volunteer cleaner for years.

6. Village of cornea donators

Binh An 1 village in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue has only 500 families, but up to 100 people have registered to donate their cornea.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Kieu, who initiated this campaign, said: “When I did not understand about cornea donation, I was scared because I thought that cornea donation is tearing eyes of the dead to donate to the living. But after doctors explained to me about it, I immediately registered.”

Binh An 1 is the first hamlet where has the cornea donating campaign.

Home services getting more expensive on Tet days
================================================== ======
VietNamNet Bridge – It is now the high business season for Tet services: car and motorbike care, money change, home decoration and beauty services. Of course, the high demand has made the services more expensive.

High fees for car renting, money change

It’s very cold these days, which has pushed up the demand for car renting and dry laundry. Nguyen Huu Thanh, the owner of a car renting shop at No 286 Nguyen Trai Street in Hanoi said that the number of people renting cars is double that of the last year, while the rental has also increased. In 2011, Thanh rent car for the fee of 700,000 dong, while he now can charge up to 1.1 million dong per day.

People mostly demand medium class cars such as Hyundai Get (500,000 dong in fee per day), Lacetti (700,000 dong), Innova (1.2 million dong). The clients, who need to rent cars, have to show identity cards and deposit money of 7-8 million dong.

“The service has been in such a high demand that even luxurious cars such as Camry or Civic which have the high fee of 1.7-2.2 million dong have also been ordered,” Thanh said.

Regarding dry laundry, instead of charging 30,000 dong for an overcoat, laundry shops now charge 120,000 or 150,000 dong. Previously, customers could get their clothes back after two days. Meanwhile, customers are now told to wait for one week.

Hoang Minh in Den Lu residential quarter said that he only had to pay 100,000 dong to have 4 overcoats washed earlier this winter, while he has been charged 300,000 dong in recently days.

Small change service proves to be the most bustling service these days. Vietnamese people have the habit of changing their banknotes in big face values into small changes, which they will used to donate when going to pagodas on Tet days, or to give to children as Tet gifts.

Nguyen Anh Ha, the owner of a small change shop on Quang Trung Road in Ha Dong district, requires the fee of 40-45 percent for new 200 dong banknotes, 30 percent for 500 dong banknotes, and 15 percent for 1000 dong and 2000 dong bank notes.

For example, people need to pay 100,000 dong and get back 60,000 dong in 200 dong and 500 dong bank notes.

Vietnamese people now not only like Vietnam dong new bank notes, but they wish to have dollar banknotes as well. On some websites, one dollar banknotes are being offered to sell at 25,000 dong (the actual dollar price now is about 21,000 dong per dollar).

Small change shops’ owners say that in general, two dollar bank notes and 10,000 dong bank notes are now most wanted.

Home services in high demand

Ha Thuy, an office worker, said that she does not have time to do housework herself, therefore, she has to have house cleaning, ornamental trees taking care, preparing parties done by service providers. “You just need to spend several hundreds of thousands of dong or one million dong to have everything done just within a short time,” THuy said

Doanh Minh Chinh on Thai Thinh street of Dong Da district said that the services are now very diversified. Housewives can find assistants to make rice glutinous cakes, wash dishes and clean house. “You just need to spend 100,000-200,000 dong a day, and you can go out on Tet days,” she said.

Especially, if someone wants a party to feast guests on Tet days, they just spend some tens of thousands of dong to hire a professional cook who will surely satisfy his guests.

If housewives want someone to make purchases for them, they would have to spend 20,000 for every invoice, and the transport fee from supermarket to home, about 10,000-30,000 dong.

The service of painting houses and interior redecorating has become 15-20 percent more expensive, while the service fee is thought to increase by 50 percent on the days just before Tet.

When u use the translation, u need to type the sentence in 100% vietnamese words. Those u got from her sms doesnt have the diacritical mark, so u wont get the true meaning.

Exactly. So is there any ways to auto add those diacritical marks to the texts?

Most expensive dining experiences in Vietnam
=================================================
These expensive dishes may cost a few months’ salary for an average Vietnamese but the upscale restaurants catering them are always crowded with people trying to get a seat to savor these high-class dishes made from carefully chosen ingredients by renowned chefs

Is the money spent on these dishes worth their promised health and nutrient value or is it just for the glamour of dining in fancy places? Only insiders can answer.

1. Appetizers fetch $750, an everyday occurrence for the rich

At S.H. restaurant on Ly Thuong Kiet Street, 50 kg of lobsters are consumed every day. Though it costs VND3.2 million ($150) a kilogram, lobster is one of the favorite dishes here. Some customers spend dozens of millions of dong just on this.

T., a waitress at the restaurant, says it happens ever day. She lists some expensive appetizers like red snapper fin and crab-roe soup (VND1.5 million), bird’s nest and shark fin soup (VND1 million), and Australian abalone soup (VND1 million). A meal for six could cost $1,500 without drinks. Wines cost $1,000. Customers can bring their own drinks, but corkage is $15 for wine and $20 for booze. The waitress says hundreds of customers come every day, with weekdays being busier than weekends.

“They usually come to talk business.

Since they pay a bill of $1,500 without batting an eyelid, I guess they are not spending their own money," said the waitress.

2. A bowl of pho costs 100 kilos of rice

A bowl of pho costs $34, as much as 100 kg of unhusked rice - yet the dish has been warmly received and eagerly consumed by many customers, said Mr. To Lam, General Director of the Hanoi-based Capital Garden (Vuon Thu Do) Restaurant, where this special and shockingly priced beef noodle is served.

The place offers mainly two kinds of beef noodle: the VND650,000 ($34) Sagagyu beef noodle served in fine china gold gilded bowls with curved spoons, and the VND125,000 ($6.5) American beef noodle served in normal bowls with straight spoons. The service is also more elaborate: broth and noodle is served in one bowl, and machine sliced beef served in a separate dish. The VND500,000 ($26) Kobe beef, or the VND220,000 ($11) Wagu beef are also available here.

Prohibitive as it is, the dish is in such a demand that his three restaurants, accommodating 150 guests, are often overloaded – guests are mostly businessmen and wealthy families.

3. Hundred-dollar beefsteaks

My Way restaurant on Hanoi’s Ly Thai To street serves beefsteak made from expensive Japanese Kobe beef at VND1.9 million (US$90) for tenderloin and VND1.7 ($80) for strip loin. Each dish includes a 200g steak, mashed potato, bread, salads and a choice of five different sauces: green pepper, red wine, BBQ, cherry tomatoes and mushroom cream. At lower prices, customers can choose Japanese Wagyu for VND1.28 million (US$500) or American and Australian beef starting from VND380,000 ($20). The reason for such high prices is due to the high costs of the ingredients and the complexity of the preparing and cooking process.

Ho Toan Thang, the restaurant chef, said about 20 guests visit the restaurant to savor the steaks every day. Besides curious people who wished to try the expensive dishes once, 70 percent of the guests are frequenters who take family, friends and partners to the restaurant. There are also reservations for a table for two with candle lights, Kobe beefsteaks and Spanish wine for a sweet proposal night.

4. Drinking gold wine to prevent HIV/AIDS

A gold wine brand called G. is said to contain 22 carats of pure gold to help increase iron levels in blood, decompose stones inside organs and increase energy. Each 500ml bottle is sold for VND1.5 million (US$75).

At the same price, consumers can buy a set of three bottles of Korean gold wine, which is said to help prolong lifespan, brighten skin and prevent HIV.

“My husband bought them during his business trip to Korea,” said a gold wine seller in Ho Chi Minh City.

“Take one glass before each meal and you’ll see the effect in a week.”

Doctor Do Thi Ngoc Diep, director of the HCMC nutrition, said no research had shown gold to have any benefit to human health. It is not listed as a healthy nutrient.

“There is no need to eat gold,” Diep said. “On the contrary, overeating can cause poisoning since gold is a heavy metal.”

5. Eating golden turtle to cure heart diseases

If you think these Hanoi restaurants and their patrons are decadent, they pale in comparison to what goes on the Mong Cai border in Quang Ninh, where rich people feast on golden turtles.

According to a rich man living here, golden turtles are very precious and rare. Since they live in high mountain habitats, they breathe the freshest air and are very nourishing.
Eating them can improve one’s health and wine mixed with turtle blood or gall can help cure heart disease, he claims.

Their price? A turtle no larger than a cup costs VND50 million ($2,400).

6. Local chef, local ingredients, international price

Chef Vo Quoc’s high-class catering has got popular by word of mouth, and he does not pay for marketing or advertising, but instead lets his clients find him.

Every time he receives an order to cater at a house or company party, Quoc introduces his clients to three simple courses with five dishes each. Depending on the quality, each course can cost VND2-8 million (US$100-400) per guest. At the highest price, the menu includes fresh seafood, abalone and shark fin.

Quoc caters six luxurious parties like this each month.

“Parties I cater cost more than usual because I pledge not to use salt, sugar, MSG or any other addictives,” Quoc said.

Quoc said that other than Australian beef and Japanese abalone, he uses mostly local produce.

“I buy vegetables and spices at Ben Thanh Market. There are two stands that sell fresh vegetables from Hoc Mon District. Seafood can be found in Cu Market on Ham Nghi Street. Their prawns, crabs and squid are fresher than those in any other market.”

When asked who is willing to pay such a high price for a party, especially in these troubling economic times, Quoc said, “I cannot reveal clients’ information. What I can say is that they are high-class and very gastronomic.”

7. Dining like an emperor, paying like a millionaire

Long Dinh restaurant (Hanoi) is renowned for its “golden room,” an unabashedly decadent place that gives its customers the impression of dining in a royal palace. Its gold inlaid tableware sparkle on a perfect white table.

But to dine like an emperor does not come cheap – it could cost a person US$1,000, the same as Vietnam’s per capita income. An appetizer like a bird’s nest and crab-roe soup costs $46, bird’s nest and chicken soup is $65, while South African abalone soup comes at $96.

“We have 300 dishes here for the equivalent of a few quintals of rice,” a waitress says.
Even a small pack of cashew costs VND800,000 ($40).

Considering the high prices, you would think few people go there, right? Wrong. Long Dinh is always packed, and one needs to book in advance to get a table.

Lovesick man kneels for hours to prove love
================================================

A young man was spotted resting on his knees for five hours in front of a mattress shop in Nha Trang city’s To Vinh Dien street last Saturday, piquing the curiosity of people in the neighborhood.

“I have come and gone from the street today and I still see him here,” said a motorbike taxi driver.

Many passers-by stopped and watched him. Some gave advice, telling him to stand up and go home, but he did not listen.

According to newswire VnExpress, the man is a sophomore in business management at Nha Trang University.

Recently, his girlfriend broke up with him to concentrate on studies and her future career.

The 20-year old man had been trying to call her but couldn’t get through. He believed that the girl was still in love with him, so he decided to kneel down and wait in front of the shop where she worked.

“I believe she broke up with me for my sake. By kneeling down like this, I hoped my girlfriend would understand my heart and come back to me,” the desperate young man told the newswire.

Sadly, his girlfriend did not show up on that day, since she had quit working at the shop.

An assistant from the shop later came out to consult with him and was able to convince him go home after he had been kneeling down for five hours.

Office workers hunting for “royal food” to present Tet gifts to bosses
================================================== =========

VietNamNet Bridge – What to buy for Tet gifts to bosses is now the headache of many office workers. Expensive “royal food” which is good to human heath is the choice of many people.

Bosses nowadays don’t need money, need good health

Tet is the good opportunity for office workers to present gifts to their bosses that serve their job promotion. Therefore, even in the current economic difficulties, where people have to fasten their belt, they are still willing to spend millions of dong for Tet gifts to the bosses.

In previous years, “envelops with money inside”, wooden furniture and feng shui decoration things were the biggest choices. However, people’s thoughts seem to have changed and they now tend to choose nutritious food for their bosses.

“The bosses now have everything they want, from money to villas. Therefore, what they want to have to is just the good health,” an officer commented.

Nguyen Thi Lan, officer of a construction company headquartered on Phan Dinh Phung Street, said that she is racking her brain about what to buy for the boss. Last year, she gave the boss a bottle of wine her husband bought during a foreign business trip to Russia. Of course, the bottle of wine was very expensive, about 500 dollars, or 10 million dong, which was equal to the monthly income of a middle class Vietnamese office worker.

“The boss liked the bottle of wine very much. And my business has been going very smoothly so far,” she said.

Lan went on to say that she is planning to buy either salangane’s nests, shark fin or abalone. “I have been told that these products are very good to human health, therefore, I believe that the boss will be satisfactory with the gifts.” Lan said.

“The art in presenting gifts is choosing the rare and precious things which the boss likes,” she added.

Le Ngoc Minh on Doi Can Street complains that she still has not decided what to buy. “My boss has everything already. She is very keen on perfume and cosmetics, therefore, it would be better not to buy these products,” she said.

Minh said she has been told to buy salangane’s nests, priced at 3-5 million dong per 100 gram. This is very good to people’s health, especially, this helps women stay young for a long time.

“When the boss feels satisfactory with the gifts, you will succeed”

The owner of Lan Ca Shop at Dong Xuan Market, the biggest wholesale market in the north, said that a lot of people have come to buy “royal food” such as salangane’s nests, shark fins for the Tet gifts to the bosses this year.

Specialty shark fin is priced at 15 million dong per kilo, while preliminarily treated shark fin is sold at 9 million dong, while the products of lower classes are sold at 8-10 million dong. As for salangane’s nests, wild birds’ nests are very expensive, about 22 million dong per 100 grams, while farmed birds are cheaper, just 3-5 million dong per 100 grams.

The salesmen at Dong Xuan Market tell buyers that they can feel about the quality of the products and the prices when buying the royal food here. The sale prices would be 1.5-2 times higher if people buy the same products on Lan Ong Street, which has been well known as the Chinese traditional medicine street.

However, the commitments of the salesmen at the Dong Xuan Market just make people half-believe. Tran The Loi, the officer of a computer company, said that he cannot be sure about the quality of the products sold at the markets. “My sister is working for Horison Hotel, and it would be better to ask her buy specialty food for me. This will help avoid counterfeit products,” Loi said.

Meanwhile, Huong, a bank officer, said that she has placed order directly with a production workshop in Nha Trang City.

More overseas Vietnamese flock to HCM City for Tet holiday
================================================== =======

The number of overseas Vietnamese coming back to the motherland to enjoy the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday via HCMC is projected to increase substantially over the same period last year, said Tran Hoa Phuong, deputy head of the HCMC Committee for Overseas Vietnamese.

Phuong gave no statistics on the number, but said he predicted a strong increase given difficulties in booking air tickets as well as an increase in flights to cater to the strong demand.

“It is hard to book flight tickets since the seat occupancy is fully occupied,” Phuong reckoned.

As uncertainties in the world economy increase, more overseas Vietnamese choose the country as a destination for their festive holiday due to the lower cost of living back home.

The number of Vietnamese going back to Vietnam via Tan Son Nhat Airport reached 400,000 people in last year’s Tet.

It is estimated that over 500,000 people would come back for Tet holidays in 2011 compared to the previous year’s number of 480,000 for the whole country, according to the National Committee for Overseas Vietnamese.

Overseas remittance flowed into Vietnam through HCMC-based banks increased to US$5 billion last year from the previous level of US4.15 billion a year before.

In fact, the amount of remittance poured into Vietnam in 2011 would be likely higher than the given figure because overseas Vietnamese also sent their money via unofficial channels.

The World Bank has earlier reported that remittance poured into Vietnam last year was estimated to reach US$9 billion, showing a 10% year-on-year increase.

New Year wishes of the poor
=====================================
For many people, the New Year means a burden of worry or something else, not a time for celebration.

With the traditional lunar New Year festival approaching, poor people have felt pressure to save at least enough for a good meal to offer on the altar in the home for their late relatives, and for offering small gifts to children.

At 8 pm, in a thatch house in An Lac Tay Commune of Ke Sach District in Soc Trang Province, Doan Thi Dep hangs up the mosquito net for her three and seven-year-old children to go to bed, and then rushes to a drain near her house to collect snails.

The 40-year-old woman swam into the water in cold weather. Though the job is hard, Dep always thinks of her children, who would otherwise be hungry during Tet when she is unemployed. Now, she does not even have rice in her house to feed the children. Thinking of her children motivates her to work harder.

Dep, whose husband left her and the children when they were quite young, has no farmland. She has to do odd jobs in order to survive and feed her family.

Every hour, Dep collects 3 kilograms of snails, which can be sold for VND20,000 (US$1). The money is barely enough for her to buy rice, not to mention to buy new clothes for the children to celebrate Tet.

“By working hard this season, I hope to save enough money to pay my debt and later, for sure, I will have to borrow money again to celebrate Tet,” she said.

Dep is not alone.

In the darkness of mid-night in the Mekong Delta’s Chau Thanh District, Tien Giang Province, amid the shoulders of youngsters, Le Van Lien, who is now 59 years old, carefully and quickly carried heavy packages of fruit to the trucks waiting at Vinh Kim fruit market.

Wiping away sweat falling from his forehead, Lien stopped and quickly ate a small piece of sticky rice he had brought along. “There are several jobs around the end of the year, and I work harder to support my two children, who study in the city.”

His usual working shift begins at twilight and ends at dawn the next morning. In the days approaching Tet, he begins working at 11 am, and goes until the next morning. Every day, he works for more than 20 hours for a wage of VND200,000 (US$10).

“My wife asked me to work less, fearing that I will get sick after working so hard. She hopes that I earn just enough money for her to make a few dishes to worship her father during Tet,” Lien recalled his wife’s words and then resumed working.

At 1:00 am, under the dim glow of the neon lights at a small workshop that processes coconut shells in Ben Tre Province’s Khanh Thanh Tan Commune, couple Ngo Van Ve and Nguyen Thi Vien were quickly husking coconuts.

Pausing for a while, Vien said: “In my health condition, I have to work and then immediately rest. I will get sick if I work with all of my effort.

Vien says this, but she does differently. She is eager and agrees right away when somebody calls her for another job, day and night.

Vo Van Hai and his wife, of the same commune, share the thoughts of Ve and Vien. On recent nights, Hai has to peel eight to ten pallets of coconuts. Each pallat contains 200 pieces of fruit. He earns VND150,000 to 200,000 (US$8-10) for each working night.

“I am still young and I am healthy enough to work at night. However, I will not be able to do this job when I get older, because it is pretty hard,” Hai said.

In a corner of Vinh Kim fruit market, Hoang Van Hai and his wife, who are now 60 years old, were watching their baskets of sapodilla plum and waiting for people to come and buy them.

“We have to carry the fruit to this area and give them directly to dealers, so that we can sell them at a better price,” Hai said.

Every night at mid night, the aging couple pulls and pushes their self-modified vehicle, loaded with fruit, to the market to find customers. Their family has seven people, so the couple has to work harder for a better price.

Dinh Thi Em, of An Thanh Village, An Lac Tay Commune, whose husband and son have to work as bricklayers, picks fruit to earn money.

When night falls, she makes fake eyelashes, along with her daughter. For each pair of eyelashes, she earns VND1,200. Each night, she and her daughter earn VND12.000 (US$0.5) from the job.

Em’s husband suffered a serious accident when he was picking coconuts for money. Though he knows he is in bad heatlh, he tries his best to work as a brick layer in order to have money which can be used when he is unemployed.

Each working day, Em earns VND80,000 (US$3.8), and an additional VND40,000 (US$1.9) for working at night. He is trying his best to pay off his debt of VND10 million (US$476), which he borrowed to build his house.

Tuan, another person who also lives under the poverty line, does not ask for much for this Tet. “A kilogram of meat is enough for me to celebrate Tet.”

HCM City: Over 100,000 Viettel mobile subscribers suspended
================================================== ========

VietNamNet Bridge – HCM City authorities have asked Viettel, one of the top three mobile networks in Vietnam, to stop supplying its services to 114,352 mobile subscribers which are using pre-paid services, who registered services with wrong personal information.

This is the second time within less than 10 days that HCM City authorities have requested mobile networks to stop providing services to subscribers who violate the rules.

Earlier, on December 28, 2011, the city decided to suspend 37,000 mobile subscribers, including 23,000 of Viettel. The city also imposed VND30 million ($1,500) of fine each on three telecom service providers – Viettel, MobiFone and Vinaphone.

The city has also asked all telecom service providers to check information registered by their subscribers and no longer provider services to violators.

The HCM City Department of Information and Communications is told to ask telecom service providers to provide necessary information on mobile subscribers for continuing its check.

The department will have to submit the plan on management of mobile subscribers to submit to the HCM City People’s Committee before January 15.

Yes. Of course.

tam hon lan the sat moi ok con tien de mua the sat ko tot co roi cung mat theo thoi gian

tam hon = heart and soul (心靈)
the sat = should be "the xac" body

If soul can mingle with body then it is OK. Using money to buy the body then it is not good. Even if you have it already, it will be lost with time.

14 Vietnamese women held after raid in Malaysia
================================================== =====
During a raid at an entertainment center in Taman AST, the State of Seremban, on Monday night, a Malaysian police team detained fourteen Vietnamese women for suspected prostitution.

The women, aged between 23 and 47, were held for abusing their tourist visas to work as sex workers at the center, Dat Viet newspaper cited Seremban police chief Hamdan Majid as saying.

Following a tip-off from the public, the raid was made at 9 pm and ended at 11pm, and resulted in the arrest of the women, Majid said when contacted by the New Straits Times on January 10.

All of the women were brought to a prison in Seremban and were being investigated under Section 55B of the Immigration Act, Dat Viet reported.

During the raid, police also detained eight local customers and three employees at the center for investigation.

"We are investigating everyone said to be working on the premises and checking their travel documents," he said.

In December of 2011, during another raid at two condominium units in Klebang Kecil, Malacca, Malaysia, police also arrested 29 Vietnamese women, aged from 18 to 55.

Of the detainees, 19 had a valid visa, two others had expired visas, and the rest had no personal papers, but all of them had worked as sex workers, Dat Viet quoted the Malacca Immigration Department as reporting.

Vietnamese flock abroad on Tet holiday
================================================== ===
VietNamNet Bridge – Since domestic tours are getting more and more expensive, Vietnamese travelers now tend to go abroad on Tet holiday.

In the thoughts of many generations of Vietnamese people, Tet holiday is the time for family’s members to gather for family parties. However, the habit has changed: a lot of people use their free time to take outbound tours.

Outbound tours running out

Pham Tien Dung, Director of Hanoi-based Goldentour & Convention Company said that it is a growing tendency that Vietnamese people travel abroad on Tet holiday instead of staying at home for family reunion. Since this Tet holiday is long (9 days), more people want to take long distance tours on the holiday.

Dung has confirmed that his firm has received a lot of orders for the tours on Tet holiday, and that 90 percent of the tours planned by the firm have been sold.

“The number of travelers booking tours this year is higher by 30 percent than the previous year,” Dung said. Especially, most of them have booked outbound tours.

Also according to Dung, the destinations most wanted by Vietnamese travelers are Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore, China and Hong Kong – the countries which are near Vietnam and have similar cultures. The departure times are between the first and ninth of January in the Lunar New Year.

Nguyen Thu Lan, Business Director of Truong Ton Trade and Tourism Company in Hanoi, said that as the information about the long Tet holiday was released soon, people can set up their travel plan soon.

“We began receiving bookings for tours from people two months ago. To date, we have sold 80 percent of the tours,” Lan said.

She also said that 70 percent of travelers have booked outbound tours, and most of them go together with families. In general, long Tet holiday is the golden opportunity for travel firms to attract clients, and they have every reason to believe that their business would prosper.

Vietravel has also launched hundreds of outbound tours, including the 100 tours to neighboring countries such as Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, China, South Korea and Japan.

Travel demand increases, tour fee skyrocket

In general, travel firms all have raised the tour fees by 20-30 percent. As explained by Lan of Truong Ton, as everything is getting more expensive, travel firms have to increase tour fees to cover expenses.

Also according to her, outbound tour fees have increased by 25 percent, while domestic tours by 20-30 percent.

At the firm, the tours to Australia are the most expensive. A seven day tour to Australia costs a traveler 65 million dong, an increase of 200 dollars over the previous years.

However, Dung of Goldentour & Convention said that the 20-30 percent tour fee increases have not influenced the demand. The number of travelers booking both domestic and outbound tours has increased over the previous years.

Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen, Managing Director of Vietnam Travel and Sports Company, also said that though the tour fees have increased by 20-100 dollars, the number of travelers booking tours still has increased by 10 percent.

Long Vietnamese Tet holiday feather foreign travel firms

It is clear that the long Tet holiday has helped stimulate the demand for traveling. However, the problem is that people do not intend to book domestic tours, but they intend to go abroad. It is simply because domestic tours are more costly than outbound tours.

The fact that the national flag air carrier unexpectedly raised the airfares commencing from mid December 2011 has made the domestic tours more expensive.

According to Cong an Nhan dan, the tours to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Myanmar which last 4-6 days, cost 5-14 million dong, which are cheaper than the tours from Hanoi to Nha Trang, Da Lat or to Phu Quoc island.

Insider’s stories of the backpacker area (P1)
================================================== ==
The backpacker area in downtown Saigon has been a tourist attraction for foreigners coming to Vietnam for years. Down the neighborhood’s alleys, there are stories about the area’s daily life told by people who have settled here; they know it well and have witnessed how much it has improved.

“Foreigners account for nearly a half of Vietnam's population”

The area is surrounded by four streets: Pham Ngu Lao, De Tham, Bui Vien and Do Quang Dau, in District 1.Each street specializes in one kind of tourism service. Pham Ngu Lao and De Tham streets provide a large number of travel agencies, while Bui Vien is the place to find hotels and rooms for rent, and Do Quang Dau offers many bars and restaurants.

According to Viet, a hotel owner on Bui Vien Street, the backpacker area was formed in the 1990s when local travel agency Sinh Café opened its first office to transfer foreign tourists in the area. Then local residents started their own tourism service businesses, such as restaurants, accommodation and entertainment services, and the area quickly turned into a zone for foreigners.

“One of my customers said it seemed that foreigners accounted for nearly a half of Vietnam's population when he saw the large amount of foreigners in the place,” Viet added.

Dung, owner of the Saigon Beautiful Group, which has five hotels in the area, said his hotels usually welcome customers who stay for only two or threedays.

He also shared that most of his customers are from English-speaking countries, and the majority are Australian.

While the peak season for European visitors is from August to January, Japanese and Chinese travelers prefer to come from February to April, and September to October, respectively.

In 2011, the area saw an increase in the number of customers from other Asian countries, including the Philippines, Indonesia, and Cambodia.

According to hotel owners in the 40th alley, one of the alleys which has the most hotels and rooms for rent on Bui Vien Street, the manners of the area have improved greatly.

Years ago, foreign tourists who came to the area saw fights between local hotels, which were household businesses, in their attempt to get customers. Unscrupulous brokers also contributed to the rather messy situation.

But now things have changed. Tu, owner of the Mimi hotel, said every hotel in the alley works with the others as a friend, and they share customers.

Still, some owners are seeing a trend in which they have to rent their houses out in order to have enough money to run their hotel, since it’s getting hard to remain in the business due to its high costs versus cheap rent (US$ 8 – US$13).

A convenient second home for expats

Although many people think that tourists just stop by the backpacker area and then go, the region still has its friends who consider Vietnam in general, and the backpacker area in particular, their second home.

Austrian expat Micheal G. James, who is now an English teacher in the city, has lived in the area for five years, while Tudor Calin Cotarta, a Romanian, has spent four months in the Mimi hotel.

According to Tu, her hotel also welcomes regular guests who come once a year, like Japanese photographer M.Yasufumi, who held an exhibition titled “Noi Dau Chien Tranh O Vietnam” (The War Pain in Vietnam) in 2009.

Each time he comes to Vietnam, Yasufumi stays at the hotel for one or two months, and usually goes out early in the morning to take pictures.

Overseas Vietnamese also choose to stay in the area for their few-month vacations, while some foreigners who have decided to settle in Vietnam also stay there and seek jobs.

Most of these regular guests are nice and behave politely. If they come back late, they may sit outside and wait until the early morning when the hotel opens. They also treat the staff at hotels like friends by giving lucky money for the Tet holiday or gifts on Christmas, as well as often tipping them.

However, sometimes customers do pretend to be robbed, or claim that they have lost property in hotels.

“In such cases, though we know their stories are false, we don’t have any proof, so we have to deal with them and discount the rent, or even let them stay for free, in order to save our reputation” Tu shared.

According to some local hotel owners, the reason the area has existed for such a long time is its convenience.

“All hotels provide their customers with all the things they need, from laundry service, to motorbikes for rent, and even bringing their mail or parcels to the local post office,” Tu explained.

Moreover, local businessmen also know how to attract their customers by being flexible in dealing with rent and remaining willing to organize the room as required.

“During the last year, the average price of rooms in the region has actually decreased compared with previous years,” she added.

Insider’s stories of the backpacker area (P2)
================================================== =======
Not just famous for budget hotels, the backpacker area, including Pham Ngu Lao, De Tham, Bui Vien and Do Quang Dau streets in Ho Chi Minh City, also has a variety of restaurants and bars with an international flair where tourists can dine and party like back home.

We visited Stella restaurant and café on Bui Vien Street and met Terry Willemsen-Bell, an Australian owner of the business.

He confesses that he didn’t know much about the restaurant being situated in a tourist area, as he was simply more excited about this new venture with his Italian friend five years ago. A couple months later, Terry’s friend had another priority in Saigon, and he has been left to run the business alone to this day.

Over the years, Stella has become a popular dining place among locals and tourists for its varied and delightful Italian dishes. Currently, foreign customers, including tourists and expats, account for 60 percent of Stella’s business.

“Gordon Ramsay [a Scottish chef who has been awarded 13 Michelin stars and has presented cooking shows like ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ and ‘Master Chef’] has been here several times,” Terry says.

“But I was only told this by the staff after the fact, and I haven’t had a chance to see him in person.”

Some expats come to eat western dishes which remind them of home-cooked flavors. Others order a drink and start to work on their laptop, since the place offers free Wi-Fi and an air-conditioned room.

Several customers find the place comfortable and stay all day, which is no problem for the restaurant. However, Terry recalls bad experiences in which a few guests, mostly tourists, came to eat and then claimed that they had left their wallets at their hotel.

“We told them to go back to get the money and come back to pay. But they never showed up,” said Terry.

“The bill was only VND100-200,000 ($5-10) so it’s not really the end of the world.”

Still, such problems do not even happen every year, and the restaurant still remains a positive attitude towards tourists.

Sometimes, Terry and his staff also instruct visitors on how to get somewhere, give them travel tips, or suggest famous attractions to visit, with a hope to provide them with an enjoyable time in Ho Chi Minh City.

On the other hand Robin, owner of Indian restaurant Baba’s Kitchen and the former manager at Mumtaz, has been trying to attract customers, even those who may eat there only once and never come back, with friendly customer service. The restaurant chefs cook food based on customers’ flavors and tastes. They even take orders for dishes not listed on the menu.

That is why the restaurant is frequented by expats, and also sees tourists come back to eat a few times during their stay, or on their return to Vietnam.

Surprisingly, most diners here are not Indian, since they still prefer to cook the food at home rather than eat out. Australians account for the majority of customers, followed by Americans and British.

Serving westerner diners, the restaurant also receives big tips from them at times.

“The highest tip a waiter at our restaurant received was VND500,000 (US$25), from an American expat,” Robin recalls.

The nights when people come out

After enjoying a satisfying dinner, tourists start to discover Saigon’s nightlife by setting out to the bars and clubs in the area.

One of the new hotspots in this backpacker area is Universal sports bar and restaurant on Bui Vien Street.

Grant Holliday, an Australian who has lived on nearby Do Quang Dau Street for more than a year, transformed this former Turkish restaurant into a chic bar with live music four months ago. Thanks to word of mouth, his place has welcomed a lot of expats, as well as tourists simply passing by.

When asked if he has had to deal with any annoying customers, the bar owner, who is also a pilot at Jetstar, said only once.

“There was one time when the electricity went out in the bar and a drunk English teacher started to chat to one of our waitresses. However, she didn’t like him and refused to talk. He started to get mad and followed her to the kitchen,” recalled Grant.

However, the incident was resolved quickly, since the drunk guy began acting normal again when the lights came back.

At a nearby famous music venue in town, the staff at Thi café on De Tham Street sometimes have to deal with disturbing guests.

“Some just came and broke our ceiling lights or balloons for no reason,” says Tan Duy, one of the waiters.

“Another time, one of our frequent guests met a woman here. They were both drunk and attempted to do it on the stage. Luckily we realized what was going on in time and stopped them.”

Vien Phuong, a bartender who has worked at Thi café for more than a year, said when unexpected things happen, they try to handle the situation in a gentle way.

“Most of staff are students and still inexperienced. However, we were told to stay calm in those situations and it would be okay,” he says.

Besides some rare troubles, Phuong loves his job, as he has a chance to meet different customers every day.

“Sometimes, we have male customers come in with a painted face, dressed up in women’s clothes, or wearing a fake baby bump even though it is not Halloween. They did it just for fun!” Phuong says.

With ten years in the hospitality field and the ability to speak fluent English thanks to his foreign housemates, Phuong is not only good at mixing drinks, but also conversing with customers.

Some tourists even add him on Facebook when they go back to their countries. Frequent expats, whose favorite drinks are all memorized by Phuong, also give good tips to his service with a smile.

“Westerners are quite generous. Sometimes they buy a VND90,000 ($4.5) beer and tip VND100,000 ($5),” said the bartender.

However, Phuong has noticed a surge in Asian and Vietnamese customers, including singers, models, and actresses in recent months.

He puts this down to the recent economic downturn, which is causing a drop in tourists from Europe and America. Meanwhile, Thi café and its live music, featuring a variety of international musicians singing contemporary songs, has become a hotspot among locals.

“Vietnamese customers are still the hardest to please,” he concludes.

Whilst locals have started to visit the backpacker area for an international flare in mid-class restaurants, bars and cafés, Rich, a young American expat, often comes with friends for some Vietnamese beer at prices as low as VND10,000 (US 50 cents) a bottle at certain bars by the sidewalk.

He says everyone can enjoy a good time in the area as long as they watch out for vendors, bag-snatchers and prostitutes.

Rich tells the story of a tourist who visited the famous G. club in the area and took a lady, who had previously claimed she was not a hooker, back to his hotel.

“However, the lady turned out to be a man. He stole all of his money and fled,” said Rich.

“In western culture, it’s common to go home with a girl, a normal one. But in Vietnam, especially this area, it’s another story.”

A combination of cheap hotels, shops, bars and restaurants, the backpack area in Ho Chi Minh City provides one of the most exciting nightlife experiences in Vietnam. However, foreign visitors should learn common sense and local culture to avoid any unfortunate accidents during their trip.

Insider’s stories of the backpacker area (P3)
================================================== ====

As bustling and busy as it is, the backpacker area, with its large population of foreigners and tourists with cash to spend, also sees the down side of the city, as many local criminals find it a promising land for their businesses.

Unlike foreign expats who have already settled down in the city and are thus more aware of local crime threats, tourists who are new to the somewhat chaotic local city life prove to be easier targets.

Although a number of travel guidebooks and websites warn tourists of the high chance of their bags being snatched or robbed in Ho Chi Minh, many of them are still often careless about their belongings.

According to a public announcement by the police department of Pham Ngu Lao Commune (District 1), where the area is situated, the final months of 2011 saw a rise in offenses against foreign travelers including theft, robbery, fraud, and others.

Robbery is among the most popular crime, with offenders often riding bikes and approaching their targets from behind, although there were cases when they robbed and fled on foot.

On September 12, 2011, 24 year-old Allison Jones, from the UK was walking on Pham Ngu Lao street when Khuc Thich Dat, 23 from nearby Bui Vien Street, snatched her bag and ran off. Luckily, a civil defense guard on duty caught him as he tried to escape.

As if petty criminals are not enough, even foreign organized gangs in Ho Chi Minh now take their share of exploiting the area by targeting foreign tourists.

Nguyen Huu Tai, head of the Pham Ngu Lao Commune’s Police Department, said that recently a group of Filipinos often frequented the nearby 23/9 Park and lured Japanese tourists into playing card games with them and then took their money.

Taking advantage of the friendliness of Japanese visitors, they approach and make friends and then drive them around the city before going to their home for the games, so that the tourists don’t remember where it is.

In the last six months of 2011, a total of six such cases were reported to local police, and victims of the scam now include Australians and a Swede.

To prevent crimes like this and raise awareness among the backpacker community, the Pham Ngu Lao police department often send public announcements to local hotels and restaurants concerning new criminal tactics.

Last year, they made 500 public notices about the Filipino gang at 23/9 Park and gave them to all of the service providers in the area.

“We often have to tell them to protect their customers and spread the information.

But many tourists staying here are quite careless I would say. I often walk around the area and tell them to be careful with their bags and belongings, whether I am in my uniform or not,” Tai said.

Having worked in the neighborhood for years, the Lieutenant Colonel knows his area well and speaks quite good conversational English.

He said fights among tourists were not uncommon, but they mostly occur because those involved were too drunk to control their behavior.

“A very small number are quite problematic and shameless. They stay at hotels as long as they want and then cause trouble so that they don’t have to pay. Hotels sometimes just let them go without paying, as they don’t want their business to be disrupted,” the police said, adding that they deported a French woman last year in a similar case.

The police department also keeps their eye on the people who sell goods on the street, most of whom are children offering chewing gum, newspapers, flowers, or shoe shines.
“Many of these kids can easily steal tourists’ cell-phones or wallets the moment they stop paying attention.”

For these reasons, many popular cafés and bars in the area now have their own security guards to protect their customers and prevent pick pocketing.

Exhibition celebrates incoming Year of the Dragon
================================================== ======

The dragon has been a long time symbol of loyalty and power in Vietnamese culture and spiritual life. The sacred creature deeply influences people's activities, particularly royalty of the past.

On the occasion of the Year of Dragon, the Viet Nam National Museum of History on Thursday organised a special exhibition entitled Dragon on Antiquities. The exhibit is a unique opportunity for visitors to appreciate the rich diversity of dragon images across a wide span of Vietnamese historical and cultural life.

"More than 100 typical objects representing many cities and provinces nationwide are on display in our exhibition," said Nguyen Quoc Cuong, museum director.

"For the thousand years since early civilisation, the dragon has existed in people's lives in different forms and material. Dragon on Antiquities is only a small part of our collection, but we hope that it will satisfy visitors' eyes," Cuong said.

At the showcase are many skilful carvings of dragon motifs, such as jade, jewellery, gold books, ewer and basin and silver incense burners.

"They are beautiful and extremely sophisticated, showing exquisite talent through many periods of development," said Tran Quang Trung, an architecture at the exhibit.

Trung, who has co-operated with the museum on different restoration projects for historical sites, was also interested in antiquities such as axe, spear, stirrups and hammock hook.

"Not only kings and royal families but also normal people used the dragon-motif for carving objects. We can see the image spread from royal to normal life," he said.

People who are interested in the exhibition, which is open all month can visit the museum at No 1 Trang Tien Street, Hoan Kiem District.

Felt sorry for those VBs who cant go back VN for TET...............

A taste of home from far away on Tet
===============================================
It’s 5 am in the morning. Five small trucks turn onto Tran Mai Ninh Street in Tan Binh District and stop in front of Ba Hoa Market, which is still quiet. A driver climbs down from one truck, calling people in a strong central accent to get their delivery.

Minutes later, several doors open and many people start chattering “Hey, what do you have today?” “When will you have candied ginger?”

Tet comes from the market

The first delivery comes to Hai, who has sold rice-paper in Ba Hoa Market for sixteen years, and is from central Quang Nam Province’s Thang Binh District. Prior to Tet, she gets many rice-paper orders of different sizes, as she wants all her regular Quang Nam-born customers to get their hometown food for Tet.

She also sells green bean cakes, roasted sticky rice cakes, chive bulbs, and caramel candies, which are Quang Nam specialties. For many Quang Nam natives that live around the market, Tet begins when the first truckload arrives with food from home.

Near Hai’s store is Nhan, an 80 year old betel leave seller, who is from Nui Thanh District of the province. In the middle of each month, she sells extra sand for filling up censers on altars. The pure white sand is taken from Nui Thanh, filtered, and then sent by truck to her. Selling sand is not very profitable, yet Nhan loves it, as she can meet many people from Quang Nam while they shop for it.

Ngan, one of her regulars, said, “I prefer using sand from my ancestors’ hometown to fill in the censer on their altar”.

At this time of the year, many northern families start to look for phrynium, a plant with broad green leaves used to wrap “banh chung” (square sticky rice cakes). Thus on the corner of Pham Van Hai and Cach Mang Thang Tam streets in Ong Ta Market, shops selling such goods have opened.

Bui Thi Ai, a rice shop owner on Pham Van Hai Street, said that she started selling the leaves a week earlier this year. According to her, many people from northern Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh provinces have lived here for more than fifty years, but they never forget “banh chung” with its unique leaf color, from home. They find that the shops in Ong Ta Market provide a taste of home in Ho Chi Minh City.

Preserving a taste of home

Stories of people who bring a countryside taste of Tet to Saigon are not just about making a living, since they also have a strong desire to remember their homeland for themselves, as well as their fellow countrymen.

In a small house at the end of Nguyen Thi Tu Street in Binh Tan District, Nguyen Thi Me is packing rice flakes with her son. Me is from the central Binh Thuan Province’s Ham Thuan Bac District, where the special rice flake balls are produced. In order to have these delicious rice cakes, she goes to verdant sticky rice fields in the Mekong Delta and makes pre-orders with the field owner to harvest when the grains are plump and ripe.

Surprisingly, she insists on finding the lumpy yellow sugar, instead of refined white sugar, to mix the rice with thin-sliced of pineapple to make delicious products.

Chance to meet fellow countrymen

Hoc, a sponge cake seller in Ba Hoa Market, said that she moved to the south more than ten years ago, and lost contact with her friends at home. Two years ago, she met a friend from high school who accidentally ran into her while shopping for sponge cakes for the Tet holiday.

According to Hoc, it has become a tradition for all of the shopkeepers in Ba Hoa from Quang Nam Province to have a New Year’s Eve potluck party featuring only food of the province.

“Come join us on New Year’s Eve and try all of the authentic Quang Nam food. I’ll make it up for you if they do not have it,” Hoc said.

Similarly, Hai, a rice paper seller, said that the Tet is the biggest chance of the year to meet and talk to her fellow countrymen. Somehow, selling food from home at this time makes her both happy and sad. She shared that, “I am happy for the extra sales and the chance to meet many people from my hometown, with whom I can comfortably talk in my own countryside accent. But on New Year’s Eve they all start to go home, and the market closes. That’s when I feel very homesick”.

Time For A Tet Talk
============================
We’re only just recovering from Christmas and New Year and Tet has arrived early, throwing Hanoi into Vietnam’s biggest annual holiday. A celebration of Lunar New Year, Tet 2012 will welcome the Year of the Dragon — the only mythical creature on the lunar calendar.

Tet’s all about luck, and new beginnings. Expect to see Vietnamese families spring cleaning their homes, buying new clothes and settling any disputes before the celebrations begin; behaviour and attitude at the start of Tet determines how the rest of the year will follow.

Cities and villages across the country morph into new entities; markets transform into kumquat and peach blossom forests. Avenues and alleyways empty. City dwellers go back to the countryside for this time of reconnection with families, friends and colleagues. Spirits are thanked for having blessed their families during the last year and ancestors are invited to return home.

Enter The Dragon

The celebrations typically last for nine days but will often go on for longer. There are a handful of noteworthy dates to keep in mind. By Dec. 23 on the lunar calendar (or Jan. 16, 2012) the Kitchen God will have left the building, or, more appropriately, the home. Tao Quan flies to the heavens on the back of a fish to report family behaviour to the powers that be. To prepare for his journey, families burn paper fish and money, and some in Hanoi release gold fish or carp into nearby lakes and the Red River.

Like with most calendars, New Year’s Eve (Jan. 22) is when the magic happens. Traditional Tet meals are prepped in the kitchen to welcome the most sacred moment of the holiday — the family’s ancestors enter the home and the New Year commences. An altar is placed in the front of the house with a whole chicken, a plate of salt and a serving of rice to mark the occasion. Families choose one person — often a male — to be the first to enter the house. If the person bears favourable astrological signs and enjoyed good fortune during the year, their passage is believed to transfer luck to the home. Shop owners choose their first customers with equal prudence and consult fortunetellers before selecting a day to re-open after Tet.

Three Days of Tet (Jan. 23 to Jan. 25) are dedicated to spending time with family and friends. On the first day, in accordance with tradition, married couples visit the husband’s parents. During the second, the wife’s family is visited, and some even drop by the homes of their teachers on the third.

Tet officially ends on Jan. 26 but this is flexible — some families conclude celebrations on the third or fifth day. A traditional meal is prepared for the departure of ancestors, who leave the home and continue their journey in the afterlife.

New Year Nibbles

Banh chung: A green, square-shaped sticky rice covered pie a with bean and pork centre, all wrapped in dong leaves. Possibly better fried — just saying

Gio cha: Sausage made from pork or pork skin and wrapped in green leaves

Mut: Sugar coated fruits

Xoi gac: Red sticky rice, coloured by gac fruits — said to be healthy

Hat Dua: Fried watermelon seeds

Canh Mang: Bamboo shoot stew with pig trotters

Tet Customs

Rite of passage: The ritual of carefully choosing the first person to enter the house in the New Year is rooted in the xong dat practice, where an individual is selected to touch the soil before a new crop is sown

Back away from the broom: On the first day of Tet, families avoid sweeping or disposing of rubbish as it’s feared that luck and good fortune will be swept out onto the street

Damaged goods: Go ahead, break a glass or two. Such minor incidents are said to be fortuitous

It’s your birthday: You are now one year older. Adults give children lucky money to congratulate them on their ‘birthday’

Seeing red: Red scares away evil spirits at this time of year, so expect to see it everywhere

The dragon: The only mythical creature on the calendar symbolises royalty, prosperity and a whole heap of luck

Even our prof level jackbl with at least 6 yrs of TV vocab also find this phrase new, u must be super prof level to invent this new phrase. :D
Even my bx also nvr heard this b4.

Yes, as jackbl has mentioned, Chuc Mung Nam Moi can be used both for ang mo new yr n Tet. Actually, in ancient vietnam, dai viet, ppl only celebrate lunar new yr( just like chinese), so this Chuc Mung Nam Moi is used. As for the ang mo new yr, which is more n more being celebrated in major VN cities as due to westernisation, this phrase is then more recently being used for it.

Bros can check out bro jackbl's earlier post for Tet greetings or refer to Shysaint's post: http://www.sammyboyforum.com/showpost.php?p=6802249&postcount=12676

Pop stars groove on festive vibe
==============================================
As the Tet (Lunar New Year) festival nears, pop singers have released new albums that they are confident will strike a chord with listeners.

"I have invested all of my energy and passion in my new album for the Tet season," said pop star Dam Vinh Hung.

To finish his DVD, Chuc Xuan – Ben Em Mua Xuan (Happy Tet – Enjoy Spring Together), Hung worked with a group of professionals in the field.

"Singing lyrical tunes by veteran musicians such as Nguyen Ngoc Thien and Quoc Dung is not an easy task," said Hung, winner of the Mai Vang (Golden Ochna) award for the most favourite male singer of 2011.

Hung spent several months in a studio to perfect his recording. "I sang with my heart and soul," he said.

Hung's DVD features 14 songs in pop and dance music, including La Hoi's Xuan va Tuoi Tre (Spring and Youth) and Dung's Diep Khuc Mua Xuan (Spring's Melodies).

The album's guest singers, Duong Trieu Vu and Hong Ngoc, performed confidently with their idol Hung.

Singer Ho Ngoc Ha is also confident that her latest album, Ngay Tet Que Em (Tet in My Native Land) – a CD of 20 popular songs in praise of spring written by famous composers like Duong Thu, Minh Ky and Hoai An, will do well.

The highlight of her album is Ngay Tet Que Em by Tu Huy, which has been sung many times by other artistes, young and old.

Ha recorded the song with her younger colleagues Minh Hang, Nhu Quynh, Ai Phuong and V.Music – one of the country's most favourite pop bands.

"Ha's album is an unusual CD for her fans," said music critic Pham Hoang Nam, noting that the singer and her producer spent a lot of efforts to make the CD a high quality product in both appearance and content.

Young singers Hang, Quynh and Phuong also worked on other albums for release during the Tet festival.

Veteran singers Ho Quynh Huong, Quang Dung and My Le have worked with HCM City Television to produce DVD Dat Nuoc Mua Xuan (Spring-Country).

The album has nine songs and a track, including Chao Mua Xuan (Hello Spring) and Mua Xuan (Spring Rain), popular songs on online music forums.

Meanwhile, Ha Noi-based Trang Nhung finished recording her latest album, Trang Nhung Xuan (Trang Nhung and Spring), featuring romantic songs about the capital city and spring that she promises "will have new and strange things to surprise my fans".

The CD will be released this Sunday.

10 things you should NOT do during Tet
==================================================

Like any culture, there are taboos to be avoided. For the Vietnamese, Tet is a wonderful occasion for family reunion but certain things must not be done during this festive season.

For foreigners who are still not familiar with Vietnamese customs, or the way the Vietnamese celebrate Tet, here is a Watch out list!

Rule number 1: Don’t show up at somebody’s house on the 1st day of the new year unless you have been invited by the house owner first, and especially if you are not lucky enough to possess a name associated with wealth, happiness, prosperity or longevity.

Well, still plenty of time to get your name changed! And be careful not to visit anyone’s house for the first 3 days if you have funerals in your immediate family in the last 3 years.

Rule number 2: No black and white, or dark clothes– they are for funerals, not New Year holidays. Wear red –hopefully bulls will pardon you during these days.

Rule number 3: Don’t swear, curse or argue. Avoid negative topics such as accidents, deaths, or funerals. Put on a smile for at least the first 3 days of the year, even if somebody slaps you in the face, and on the safe side, do as the Brits do – talk about the weather! Oops, but maybe not the black holes or floods!

Rule number 4: For those who enjoy giving presents, make sure you avoid the followings: clock or watch (the recipient's time is going to pass), cats (mèo in Vietnamese language pronounced like nghèo, poverty – even though this year is the year of the cat), medicine (the receiver will get ill), writing ink (ink is black, an unlucky color), scissors or knives (they bring incompatibility).

So if you are thinking of giving your girlfriend a Rolex, it is high time you changed your mind!

Rule number 5: Don’t sweep the house or empty out the rubbish to avoid luck and benefits going with it, especially on the first day of the New Year. So be prepared to live with dust and dirt!

Rule number 6: Don’t ask someone to repay you a debt or loan (but wait until the next 2-3 weeks!) People believe that if they have to repay or borrow money at the beginning of the year, they will have to borrow and repay money for the rest of the year. Best time of the year to dodge your debts, eh?

Rule number 7: If you have been proud of your ability to devour any kind of food, stop yourself from eating squids (its ink is black, not the favorite color, remember?), duck meat (duck is stupid), or shrimps (you will move backwards like them!).

So if you are seeking promotion, probably best not to eat shrimps for the whole year – not so sure about lobsters though!

Rule number 8: Don’t take things that are related to water or fire out of somebody’s house: Fire is considered to be the source of the warmth of the family, whereas water appears in the popular wish “Tien vo nhu nuoc” (“Money rushes in like water).

So, taking water out of somebody’s house is equivalent to taking away their wealth. A relaxing time for firefighters!

Rule number 9: the fifth day of the New Year is considered to be anniversary of the death, not good for departures. A good excuse for not having to start work that early, and if your boss is a western, he needs education!

Rule number 10: And last but not least, don’t kill, or hurt! If you feel like eating chicken, buy it ready prepared – the guilt is with the slaughter house owners and we remain always innocent and pure!

Xong dat or first-footing during the Dragon Year
================================================== ===

Among the many taboos and rituals connected with the Lunar New Year in Vietnam is xong dat, or “first-footing” as the Scots call it.

It is a deep-rooted belief that the first person to enter the house in a year will have a bearing on the family’s fortune through the year. Thus, the rich and popular are invited to come home at that time.

Traditionally, the first visitor hands out “lucky” money and New Year gifts to the hosts and seldom stays longer than a few minutes. This is to ensure that things do not get “stuck” in the new year.

But like many other traditions, xong dat too has evolved into a personal belief without a strict interpretation. It is altered to suit each family and varies according to region.

What has remained unchanged is the fact that a person who can bring luck should be the first-footer.

The flip side is that Vietnamese are chary of visiting anyone’s house early on New Year’s Day for fear they may be held responsible for any possible misfortune.

“I still remember the year when my husband suffered from a serious illness and passed away,” an elderly woman in Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City, said.

“An unwanted guest visited us early morning on the first day and I cannot help recalling that experience.”

Who will bring luck?

There are several important qualities a family will look for to find their first-footer: The person’s Chinese Zodiac sign is the most common, especially in the northern and central parts.

In Chinese astrology, each year -- and a person born in that year -- is represented by an animal in a cycle of 12 signs. The hosts ask a fortuneteller to identify the animal that is luckiest for a particular year and themselves.

“I [ask] for a sign compatible with my husband’s because he is our family’s breadwinner,” Le Anh Dao, a public official in Tan Binh District, said.

“It is important because the compatibility of Zodiac signs under which we are born and derive our fate from determines everything important in our life -- family, career, health, and luck.”

But in other families, sign compatibility is not a big deal.

“I don’t look at the person’s sign. As long as the person is good, healthy, and cheerful, I am fine,” the elderly women in Tan Binh district said.

“I would even prefer a family member who I can trust and know well rather than some distant relative even if he or she has the right Zodiac sign. I want to make sure of my family’s luck.”

First-footers also need to have a bright and cheerful disposition, good health, career success, and a happy family, things people normally aspire for in the new year.

Personal beliefs and experiences have already altered xong dat and it is now the turn of modernization and consumerism in urban areas, with agencies like Hoa Da in Hanoi offering xong dat services.

For VND600,000 (US$31), Hoa Da will dispatch an embodiment of luck to your house for 30 minutes. Young men born under various Zodiac signs and with good looks and a lively and cheerful countenance are hired by such agencies to call on families who do not mind paying to get the right first-footers.

Customers are also provided consultation on signs and identification cards of first-footers as proof.

Customers are usually companies or individuals running businesses who seem especially sentimental about a good beginning.

Li xi or the gift of lucky money during Tet
================================================== ===

Traditionally the most special and most waited-for holiday in Vietnam, the lunar New Year usually arrives around late January or early February.

The first three days of the springtime new year are celebrated by everyone, although for many others, the festivities and other forms of celebrations can last an entire week.

Many traditional customs are practiced during this special occasion, like honoring the ancestors’ spirits, visiting close relatives on the first day of the New Year, exchanging New Year’s wishes with relatives, neighbors and friends, and especially the custom of giving lì xì or lucky money to children and elders.

This custom – which is known as mừng tuổi (many happy birthdays return) in the north and lì xì (similar to the Cantonese pronunciation "lai see") in the south - is a way of honoring children and elders in Vietnam during Tet. "Lai see" in Chinese means a thing that brings lots of luck and good fortune to kids. Nowadays, it is also a symbol of good health, success, and happiness.

Despite staying up late on New Year’s Eve to celebrate the arrival of a new year and especially honor traditional rituals dedicated to greeting the ancestors’ spirits coming back to the family for the occasion, the locals wake up early the next morning, put on their best clothes and the entire family, usually multi-generational, gathers in the living room to welcome the New Year.

Children will respectfully fold their arms in front of their chests, and, facing their parents as well as grandparents, give them the best wishes for a “Happy New Year” or “good health and longevity”.

The adults, in return, also extend their wishes to children for “Eating well and growing up healthy”, and “Happiness and prosperity” for all family members. Guests also give children lì xì as well.

To rejoice over or pray for happiness and longevity, on the first morning of Tet, adults congratulate children on becoming a year older by presenting them with red envelopes holding some freshly-minted banknotes inside.

According to traditional beliefs, the money in red envelops, usually in nominal quantity, bears a symbolic meaning while the red color of the envelope symbolizes good luck and is supposed to ward off evil spirits.

Giving li xi during the lunar New Year has been considered fortunate for both the givers and receivers. Those who give will also invite the flow of money into their house during the entire year.

Giving these envelopes symbolizes that the family fortune would be passed on to the children and the unmarried teens or adults.

According to some beliefs, lì xì is best kept and not spent immediately, a way to encourage young people to save money. Furthermore, the “lucky money”, as its name suggests, is believed to bring luck and wellness so the recipients might as well keep it.

In Vietnam, lì xì are typically given to those who are younger.

Red envelopes are used to deliver payment for favorable service to lion dance performers and religious practitioners.

Vietnam plagued by illegal cabs
===========================================
Experts say more should be done to eliminate scam taxis after inspections led to the suspension of eleven firms in HCMC and Hanoi

Nguyen Chi Hieu hailed a slow-moving taxi when he and his family arrived at Ho Chi Minh City’s hydrofoil station on their way back from a weekend beach vacation in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.

After telling the driver to take them to their home in Binh Thanh District, he recognized that he was on an illegal taxi advertising the logo and phone number of a reputable taxi company.

“We were well aware of the presence of scam taxis through the media. But we were really tired after the hydrofoil trip and forgot to carefully check the taxi brand,” he said.

“I decided to continue driving, but kept a close eye on every movement of the driver as well as the meter to see if there was anything unusual,” he said. “Finally, we paid VND150,000, as the meter showed, although we normally pay only VND85,000 to go the same distance. It was a scam taxi and the meter may have been modified to increase the fare.”

But Hieu was luckier than some foreign tourists, who have been badly ripped off by con taxis in big cities.

In a recent case, Hanoi police arrested Nguyen Van Thong and Nguyen Van Hung in Hanoi for allegedly swindling a Swedish tourist on a drive from Noi Bai International Airport to a hotel on Hoan Kiem District.

Police said Hung offered the Thong’s taxi – which was unregistered– to the tourist for VND300,000. On the trip, they told the tourist to pay VND4 million, supposedly to cover tolls and other fees.

In May, a Malaysian tourist in HCMC took a trick taxi from Ben Thanh Market to Tan Son Nhat International Airport and was charged VND4 million for a trip that should have cost only VND150,000 in a registered taxi.

In a recent effort to improve taxi services and busting scam artists, the Transport Ministry conducted inspections of taxi companies in Hanoi and HCMC, suspending eleven taxi firms, including six in Hanoi and five in HCMC.

In Hanoi, inspectors suspended operations for the following taxi companies: Mua Xuan, Le Gia, Phu Gia, Hong Hung, BG and Taxi 14. Major violations included lacking a communication device and management personnel; some companies had fleets of only four or five taxis.

In HCMC, Minh Duc Taxi and the Transport and Travel Service Cooperative No. 2 had their business licenses revoked, while Happy, Festival and Petrolimex were suspended from operating at Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

Thach Nhu Sy, the ministry’s deputy chief inspector, said the offending taxi firms were also fined for violations, which included not following registered car colors and logos and failing to monitor their vehicles’ operation.

He said it come under the authority of HCMC to grant new licenses to the two firms whose licenses were revoked.

“Currently, 11 of 33 taxi firms registered to operate in HCMC are allowed to operate in Tan Son Nhat International Airport and the transport ministry has been instructed to draft regulations for taxi operation in the airport,” he told Saigon Tiep Thi (Saigon Marketing) newspaper.

Sy confessed that it would be very difficult to enforce such regulations; however, he did not elaborate why.

Chairman of the HCMC Taxi Association Ta Long Hy said it would be difficult to ensure taxis operated according to code, despite the stern action taken against violators. “Inspection is only an ad hoc measure, unable to effectively solve the problem,” he said.

He said taxis should be given more favorable tax policies, as opposed to the current policy which charges them the same amount as private cars. When private cars have to pay higher taxes, there will be fewer illegal taxis, he said.

“We proposed reducing registration fees to encourage the purchase of new cabs and improving taxi services, but it was rejected,” he said.

Taxi problem

Experts said that the last resort was to limit the number of cars and ban taxis from operating during designated hours on specific streets in the city.

In Hanoi, transport authorities have banned taxis from operating on certain streets during peak hours this Tet, which falls on January 23, a controversial decision considering that citizens assume that demand for taxis will increase then.

Taxi firms expressed fear that their profits would be reduced.

Nguyen Xuan Tan, deputy director of the Hanoi Transport Department, rejected rumors that they would prohibit taxis around the clock on some streets during Tet.

According to a plan issued by municipal transport and police departments, the taxi ban will take effect from January 9 to February 6, from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. every day on several streets, including Tay Son, Nguyen Luong Bang, Ton Duc Thang, Xuan Thuy, Cau Giay, Lang Ha, Pham Ngoc Thach, Chua Boc, Thai Ha and La Thanh and the Chuong Duong Bridge.

Dao Vu Minh Tuan, deputy director of North-East Mai Linh Company, said it would be easier if the ban was implemented both before and after Tet.

“The demand for taxis during Tet always increases together with that of residents to visit their relatives during the holiday,” he said.

HCMC authorities suspended registration for new taxis in mid-2010, following a boom in the number of the vehicles. Earlier, the city planned to have 9,500 taxis by 2015 but the actual number increased to 12,550 by early 2010, not including thousands of unregistered taxis.

However, taxi drivers said the decision was ineffective because many firms simply dispatched their taxis from other provinces to the city.

Dang Hoang Phuong, chairman of Sai Gon Hoang Long Taxi, said harsh competition exists in the taxi market and every firm has tried their best to increase their number of cars in an effort to introduce their brand to passengers.

“Furthermore, investing in more cars would increase revenue and promote the brand,” he said.

Hy of the HCMC Taxi Association said many firms have taken their cars from nearby provinces to HCMC following the city’s registration suspension.

According to Hy, a large number of taxis with different local license numbers, models and colors have made it easier for illegal taxi rings to operate.

Duong Hong Thanh, deputy director of HCMC Transport Department, admitted that current regulations do not ban firms from assigning cars from other provinces to HCMC.

Many people have noted that similar problems with taxis plague cities all over the world and that passengers should be vigilant to protect themselves.

Tony, an expat living in Vietnam, said HCM is no worse than London or Naples (Italy) or any other big city.

“In Naples my wife had her bag ripped from her shoulder and my friend had his wallet stolen on a bus. London is bad for thieves too; so it’s the same wherever you go,” he said.

“Just try not to be too stupid. It's easy enough to do some research before making a trip to find reputable taxis and always go on the meter.”

Vietnam continues crackdown on bandit taxis
================================================

The Ministry of Transport will extend an inspection of all taxi companies operating in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City this year, a senior official has said.

Chief inspector Nguyen Xuan Hao said at a press briefing on January 9 that his ministry had suspended six taxi companies in Hanoi and two in HCMC following inspections carried out between November 11 and December 2 last year.

In Hanoi, five of the six taxi brands - BG, Phu Gia, Hong Hung, Le Gia and Mua Xuan - were suspended after they failed to produce valid business licenses.

Inspectors also revoked the license of Taxi 14 belonging to the Anh Dung Joint Stock Company after it failed to meet the conditions of registered transportation businesses.

In HCMC, the two firms suspended were the Tourism Vehicle Cooperative No.2, which operated dozens of cabs but had no managerial oversight, and the Minh Duc Tourism Transport Cooperative, which had just 50 taxis operating while it had 170 taxi licenses granted by HCMC Transport Department.

Inspectors also suspended three taxi brands – Happy Taxi, Petrolimex Taxi and Festival Taxi – from operating at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCMC for various violations.

Hao said the ministry will continue to inspect all remaining taxi companies in the two cities, adding that many taxi brands which have yet to be inspected even have lower performance than those inspected.

Tết to me
====================

This year marks the seventh time that I will celebrate Tết in Vietnam. With each year, I have learned a little bit more about the holiday. With each year, traditions have taken root within me and I have come to appreciate the holiday more and more.

During my first Tết in Vietnam, in 2005, I treated the holiday as most other expatriates do: It was time off to relax, eat fried SPAM and play computer games. As the years went by, I was invited to people’s houses and offices to celebrate the Lunar New Year, and got a taste of unique holiday foods.

Now that I am married and have Vietnamese in-laws, the holiday is much more meaningful. The bus ride back to Long Xuyên, An Giang, fills me with anticipation. Giao thừa is a time for my brother and sister-in-law, my wife and me to mingle with the throngs of people in the streets watching the fireworks. A vegetarian meal and trip to the local pagoda to start the New Year on Mùng Một refreshes me and fills me with hope for a better year ahead.

And I can’t begin to describe the wonderful food and festive times with family and old friends in the Mekong Delta. Savory thịt kho, cooked for at least 24 hours, bánh tét, fried lạp xưởng, and of course some refreshing beer are the flavors that I associate with Tết at my in-laws house. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

In 2008, I was not in Vietnam during Tết, I was in rural Ohio, where most people were not even aware of such a thing as a Lunar New Year celebration. I was working on Mùng Một and a friend called me from Vietnam to wish me a Happy New Year. It was wonderful to hear my friend’s voice, but my heart sank. I felt isolated because there was no one to celebrate with and no one nearby who even understood anything about Tết. Back in Vietnam, the joy I feel during Tết is equal only to the incredible feeling I have on Christmas morning - I feel like a kid again.

Then again, perhaps I am just a person who loves holiday tradition. During the Christmas season every year, I watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” and shed tears. The star has to be the final decoration placed on the tree. Dad is the last person to open his Christmas presents. Tết is always in Long Xuyên.

Say cheese during Tet
=============================

During New Year, people often like to feast on simple traditional dishes along with their families

When the weather turns a little cold at the end of the year, it signals the arrival of holidays like the New Year and the Lunar New Year, or Tet.

It is the time when everyone expects to feast on traditional delicacies like giò thủ (pig's head paste) at family parties.

Giò thủ, a simple and popular dish in Vietnam, is known as head cheese though it is not made from cheese but from gelatinous pork meat.

Made from various parts of the animal such as ears, snout, and even cheeks, the stunning dish is both chewy and crunchy.

It originated in the north but it was so delicious that the south soon embraced it.

Giò thủ is served both at small parties and major events like Tet and ancestors’ death anniversaries, and is sometimes given as a gift to ill people.

Giò thủ goes well with pickled vegetables and some wine.

Head cheese can be preserved for a long time.

It is widely available at markets and supermarkets, and also easy to make at home.

First, one needs to thoroughly clean the pig’s ears, snout, and cheeks with water, salt, and vinegar and rinse them with water. Be sure that the fur on the meat is removed.

Soak wood-ear mushroom for around 20 minutes or until soft, and drain them.

Then boil the meat in a large pot with onion, sugar, and salt for about 45 minutes or until they are done. Test by poking a chopstick into the meat.

When the meat is done, taken it out and rinse with cold water to prevent the skin from changing color. Thinly cut the ears, snout, and cheeks.

Mix them with ground pepper, whole peppercorns, sugar, salt, fish sauce, and shredded wood-ear mushroom. Heat a pan and add some oil, garlic, and shallot.

Pour the meat mixture into the pan and stir-fry over low heat, usually for about 10 minutes, until the mixture turns viscous.

Add the mixture into a cylinder mould when it is still hot. One can use empty cans for the purpose. Line the can with plastic bags and tightly pack the cans with the mixture. While adding the mixture to the mold using a spoon, keep pressing it firmly to compact it.

After finishing, close the bag and place something heavy on top to compact the contents further, and leave the mixture in the fridge overnight.

When it cools, the mixture will congeal together thanks to the natural gelatin. Remove it from the mold and wrap it up in banana leaves and tie with strings.

Alcohol soaked animals: The champ is here!
==================================================
It seems that Vietnam is second-to-none in terms of soaked alcohols. Vietnamese put almost everything in alcohol, from vegetables to animals.

This is the conclusion of back-packing expatriates after a trip to Vietnam. More impressively, there are countless articles referring to Vietnamese soaked alcohols in Google when you type “animals in alcohol”.

“The westerners? They are mediocre!”

In a trip to America, my cousin took me to a bar and said: “There are many unique Mexican types of liquor here and the most famous is Mezcal, only Mexicans can drink this while Americans only stop and stare!” What is Mezcal actually? My cousin revealed that they immerse worms in the alcohol.

As a liquor collector, I sought to purchase such strange liquid. Ultimately I got three small bottles – a black, a red and a white! After spending some time on Google, I finally figured out that Mezcal is simply the larvae of a kind of common moth in Oaxaca (Mexico), whose scientific name is Hypopta Agavis.

Mexicans put these worms into alcohol just to make the liquid good-looking and slightly fragrant.

Only China can compare with Vietnam in producing soaked alcohol, yet the big neighbor can only produce things like bear’s paw, tiger bone glue and deer’s or porcupine’s fetuses submerged in alcohol. The most famous are the alcohol soaked three-day-old mice. According to herbalist Vo Ha, such concoctions appear both in China and Korea.

According to Asylum.com – a British entertainment website – Vietnamese people are very “highly” regarded as masters in terms of producing snake wine and relishing alcohol blended with snake blood.

To the western world, soaking animals in alcohol is seen as a taboo in culture, in lifestyle and even in legislation. In 2008, the American press reported the case of Bob Popplewell – who was arrested for making 411 jars of alcohol soaked rattlesnake. He was finally imprisoned for massacring animals.

Westerners do enjoy soaked alcohol, yet they prefer plants over animals. For instance, in Russia, people have very famous Horseradish Vodka and Pickle Vodka. And the king of soaked alcohol is Chartreuse in Isere (France), created by pastors and produced by immersing more than 130 different types of herbs in alcohol.

Vietnam is number one

After this trip I’ve learned that other countries can’t compare with Vietnam in terms of producing soaked alcohol.

Indeed, Vietnamese love to infuse different things in alcohol, from plants to animals. Snake, coucal, seahorse, tiger bone glue, bear’s paw, velvet antler. The Northern highlands of Vietnam have the famous worm wine. The Military Institute of Traditional Medicine has conducted comprehensive research on this type of worm and concluded that the worm wine provides health benefits for both men and women. A few years ago, this delicacy was still unfamiliar to Southern people, but now it is easy to find in any traditional restaurant in the Tan Son Nhat area, with the price of couples of thousands dongs for a bottle of 250 milliliters.

Another rare wine of Quang Ninh province is made with ngan, a local oyster.

Talking about alcohol soaked plants, the story is endless: chuoi hot – a specialty of Ben Tre province, wild downy rose myrtle, mo qua – a type of liana from Kien Giang province, ba kich – a king of roots from Quang Ninh province, Huong Tich apricot, tao meo – a type of fruit from Hoang Lien Son cordillera…

Whether the wine is healthy is definitely not the priority, it is uniqueness which comes first. During thet Tet holiday, people usually prefer stay at home, so it is not easy for me to arrange a get-together. Aware of this, last year, I boasted: “I got a unique pair of seahorses, welcome everybody to my house on the Tet holiday to see them.” Somebody whispered immediately: “What a disappointment! Seahorse, as common as dirt!” I answered: “Just wait, I bet no one can find such a pair of General seahorses!” When they heard the words “General seahorses,” everyone noisily asked for an explanation.

The normal length of a seahorse is only 3 inches; however my pair of seahorses is truly the first, they are four times longer – 11 inches, and as big as half of my wrist. It was given to me by my brother-in-law, who had received it as a gift from his student with a compliment: “This kind of stuff can’t be bought even with a lot of money.”

This year, my friends once again ask me whether I have anything unique. Unique? No! But something extraordinary? Yes! Last summer, an acquaintance of mine working for Khanh Hoa Swift Company sent me a jar of alcohol soaked swifts’ eggs.

This specialty is uncommon in the market, because there isn’t enough for the people in the industry. When asking about the benefit such alcoholic drink, I was told that it can help in stabilizing blood pressure. Great! Only this can infatuate all men in their fifties.

There’s just one thing, despite our passion for uniqueness, many of my friends and I never dare to try tasting. That’s the huyet linh wine in Hoa Binh province. What is it? The answer is that huyet linh is the blood of female monkeys in their menstruation…Alas, I’d better stop here, otherwise you would lose your appetite for the Tet holiday!

Banh Mi Hero
======================
In its central location just behind the Bitexco Tower, Ham Nghi serves as a pertinent place to host the plethora of food outlets that line the street.

From the all day market that has bubbling tubs of fresh fish to the mini-marts specialising in western brands, it’s a street with something for everyone.

But it is at 66–68 Ham Nghi that the biggest name of all, Nhu Lan, presides over the competition. Open 24 hours and standing as a delicatessen, bakery, butcher, roadside barbecue and Vietnamese street food restaurant all in one, this corner property has been here for over 40 years.

Six rows of silver tables with lines of red plastic stools mark a quick dining experience. Friendly staff attend to our order of spring rolls quickly and efficiently. Goi cuon tom thit are fresh Vietnamese spring rolls which ordinarily do not excite as much as their deep fried brothers, yet these seem to have a favourable balance of meat, herbs and lettuce, with two halved prawns lining the spine. At VND10,000 a go they’re a perfect bite to awaken the appetite while pondering the rest of the dishes.

The first of the mains to arrive is an overloaded bowl of bun rieu cua, a crab meat noodle soup. This broth spiked with tomato and tofu carries dense and flavourful crab balls with flaked crab meat descending steadily into the generous portion below. Although the noodles add the possibly unnecessary carbohydrates, the broth remains light yet fully flavoured, a pleasant eat for only VND40,000.

A second VND40,000 dish of com suon bi cha follows swiftly behind, a bountiful plate of broken rice with a trio of pork, barbecued meat, pig skin shavings and the mysterious pork egg custard that graces many com tam menus. The barbecued pork is salty and delicious, slightly sweetened by the caramelised edges. Yet, however delectable the meat is, the skin and pie leave a lot to be desired as you must dodge the frequent grizzle, and the custard’s spongy texture is rather off putting.

A final flourish to make up for the disappointing pork skin and custard comes in the form of a banh mi barbecue, a dish recommended by the waitress. Taken from a spit very similar to a Turkish kebab house, except looking incredibly fresh and obviously put together recently by hand, some glisteningly moist pork meat is spooned into a baguette along with mustard, mayonnaise, cucumber and lettuce. This tasty banh mi for VND25,000 is worth a visit alone to what is a thriving and enjoyable feature of Ho Chi Minh City’s street food circuit.

The King of Holidays
==============================
One of the first things most newcomers to this country learn about as they adjust to Vietnamese culture is the importance of Tet, or the Lunar New Year. When I moved here in September of 2010 I was quickly filled in on the holiday, even though it was still five months away. While the U.S., where I’m from, has its fair share of holidays, there is no equivalent to Tet.

Expats in Saigon are warned that the city will empty out a few days before the day of Tet itself; businesses will close; and there will basically be no one here. Travel within Vietnam itself is advised against, since all of the locals are traveling to their hometowns, meaning every train, plane, bus, and boat is packed to the brim. As a result, most foreigners head to other countries. The school I work at gives us 10 days off, and last year I escaped to Thailand with my two roommates. Almost everyone I knew was traveling somewhere, so I thought it would have been boring and lonely to stay here.

In America, on the other hand, most businesses close for a day or two around Christmas and Thanksgiving; and there are a few federal holidays, such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, when schools and government-run offices are shuttered, but at no point does practically the entire country shut down for an extended period of time. As the latest AsiaLIFE cover story noted, Tet is like Christmas, New Year’s, and your birthday combined.

This holiday can be somewhat difficult to describe to my friends and family back in America, since it is so vastly different from our traditions, but the phrase “Tet” is actually well known in the U.S., because one of the most decisive events of the Vietnam War occurred during Tet in 1968. People are certainly interested in how the holiday is celebrated here, and everyone is jealous of how much time we get off of work. They also find it odd that we celebrate two New Year’s – the January 1 one, and the Lunar one.

Therefore, Tet is very interesting to observe from a foreigner’s viewpoint. The holiday’s approach has been evident in the lights lining Dong Khoi and a few other major downtown streets since December. Flower shops now overflow with apricot blossoms, the favored Tet flower of southern Vietnam. Shops and restaurants around the city renovate to put their best face forward for the new year. Neighbors in my hem are painting their gates and exterior walls while remodeling their interiors. One family is hurrying to finish a new house before the holiday, which is unfortunate, since they use circular saws and power drills from 7am to 10pm nearly every day.

It really is amazing how every aspect of life revolves around Tet as the New Year approaches. My students become even less attentive than usual, since they know they have a bunch of days off coming up. Prices go up as everyone stocks up on food and drinks for family feasts. Children are given new outfits, and special banh chung cakes are sold everywhere. Even sex is tied to the holiday: this coming year will be the Year of the Dragon, and children (especially males) born in such a year are believed to be predisposed to wealth and success, so couples around the country are doing everything in their power to ensure they have a baby after January 23.

Of course, financial issues come in to play around Tet as well, most notably in the form of li xi, or lucky money. Children in particular are given small bills (although I know some children receive 20,000 or even 50,000 dong bills) by their family members as a token of good luck in the new year. This is a nice gesture, but some people do try to use this tradition to take advantage of foreigners. For example, I took a taxi downtown last week, and when I arrived the meter said 42,500. The driver then rudely demanded 50,000 for “holiday”. If he had been kinder about it I would have given him the extra money, but he shouldn’t have just expected that I would take part in a tradition that is unlike what I grew up with.

All of this means that, once life gets back to normal after Tet, the city feels different. The “spring cleaning” that accompanies the holiday means everything is newly painted and fresh. People are excited by the chance provided to start anew in the new year, and Saigon’s hustle and bustle becomes even more noticeable, as everyone strives for success. Oh, and every child can be seen playing with the new toys they received over the break.

To me, all of this is truly special, since I can’t experience any of this in the U.S. I love immersing myself in unfamiliar traditions, and I really enjoy seeing Vietnam prepare for Tet. This year, I’ll be able to see the country celebrate it as well, since I will be staying in Vietnam. I’m going to Phu Quoc for four days, and then I’ll be in Saigon the rest of the holiday. I’m curious to see how quiet the city really gets, or if all of the hype is overdone. Enjoy your holiday everyone, wherever you’re going, and if you find me asleep on a Phu Quoc beach, please don’t disturb me.

Disaffected youth?
=============================

Outpouring of frustration and disappointment among youth indicates a need to strengthen pride and confidence in the nation, experts say

They were upset, disappointed, and ashamed.

Thousands of netizens expressed these feelings after the story of a Hong Kong couple being robbed and left penniless in Ho Chi Minh City was posted on the Internet by a blogger.

“If such robbery cases continue, I would never dare to admit that I’m Vietnamese whenever traveling abroad. I don’t think I’m speaking only for myself,” one netizen wrote.

“I just feel too ashamed for the Vietnamese people as a whole. I’m not sure if I would be willing to talk to any foreign friend after this case,” another commented.

There were a few who expressed some doubt about the story, but the overwhelming majority saw no need to question its credibility, and vented their feelings in no uncertain fashion.

The negative comments have raised a debate in adult circles. Were the Vietnamese youth, who comprise a majority of the netizens, losing a sense of national pride and history or was this a hopeful sign that they cared, amidst all the apparent disengagement?

Tran Thien Chuong, a 12th grader in HCMC, said he believed the story without hesitation.

“That’s just the way of life in Vietnam,” Chuong, who had not commented online on the entry, said. “Vietnam’s tourism has been infamous enough and this case is just another vivid example adding to a long list.”

Experts say the adverse comments garnered by the blog entry about the Hong Kong tourists’ fate are more a knee-jerk reaction of the youth.

“The reaction of the youth in this case is spontaneous as usual and it is because they are not mature and experienced enough,” said Khuat Thi Hai Oanh, a Hanoi-based sociologist who directs the nonprofit Center for Supporting Community Development Initiatives.

“On the bright side, I take it as a sign that the Vietnamese youth still care about the image of their country,” Oanh said. “The older generations in Vietnam often tell me there's no point in complaining or criticizing as it doesn't change anything; that may be true, but if you don't do or say anything then you definitely won't change anything.

“So when something happens that appears to show Vietnam in a bad light, for instance tourists being robbed, they are shocked and want to talk about it and spread the word in the hope that it won't happen again.”

Experts were also agreed that the government plays an important role in shoring up youth confidence and pride in the country.

Van Duong, a 26-year-old IT graduate who studied in the US for five years, said in the case of the Hong Kong couple, she might not have as harsh a judgment on it as the netizens, but was still very “troubled” by it.

“This case is just a sad reminder for me about the bad image of Vietnamese cops,” Duong said. “I think the big problem for tourists is not the robberies themselves but is the response (or lack thereof) by the police. Before going to study abroad, I had been told quite a few stories about what happens when tourists report a crime to the police – they are met with indifference and worse.

“Now I’m back and not convinced that a sea change has happened.”

According to the World Bank's Vietnam Development Report 2006, companies rank the traffic police as the most corrupt institution in Vietnam, with many respondents stating that corruption is widespread and that bribes or gifts are typically both expected and required.

Four years later, Transparency International's Global Corruption Barometer confirmed that the Vietnamese police are considered to be the most corrupt public institution in the country.

Experts say Vietnam has to do more to engage and motivate the Vietnamese youth, given that the country has entered a period known as the “demographic bonus”, recording the highest proportion of young people entering the workforce in the country’s history. Today, young people between 10 to 24 years represent almost a third of the total population of around 88 million people, the UN said. Two-thirds of the country's population was born after the end of the Vietnam War in 1975.

David Marr, a Vietnam specialist at the Australian National University, is in the middle of selecting illustrations and preparing maps for his upcoming book on the 1945-46 period in Vietnam.

“To be thanh nien (youth) at that time was an honor and tremendous opportunity. But that was a very unusual time,” Marr said.

“Young educated men and women today have considerable advantages when it comes to surfing the net and exchanging ideas at a distance. But I'm not sure that helps them figure out where they belong or what they should be doing, beyond finding employment, getting married and having children.”

The Survey Assessment on Vietnamese Youth, commissioned by the General Statistics Office and released last year, has confirmed that in general, youth in Vietnam have high expectations about future and feel self-confident. They also appreciate their family values and their roles in the society, the survey found.

Meanwhile, other studies have indicated the lack of public citizenship among the youth.

Vietnam’s former party chief Nong Duc Manh once publicly commented on the growing number of students neglecting their studies, lacking political consciousness and indulging in excessive materialism.

But Oanh, the Hanoi-based sociologist, said she has never thought that the Vietnamese youth nowadays lack national pride.

“Their pride and confidence in the country is always there, though it could be wobbling at times,” Oanh said. “[But] once they see the national situation in Vietnam improving and attaining great results, they will definitely be celebrating for Vietnam.”

Mere slogans will not do

Analysts say it is important now that, to shore up youth confidence, the Vietnamese government as a whole maintains a good reputation of competency, honesty, integrity, and transparency.

“When that happens, more of them [the youth] would tend to believe the government than others,” David Koh, another Vietnam analyst at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore, said. “It's a matter of trust, a political capital that any regime must work to have more of.

“The way to motivate youth is not through slogans and banners, not in telling them only the good stories,” Koh said. “For newspapers and media to only feed them good news is tantamount to feeding them lies.”

Oanh urged adults in general and Vietnamese leaders in particular to heed the legitimate concerns of the youth and try to accommodate them as much as they can.

“We have to show them what Vietnam has and could have for them to take pride in,” Oanh said.

Duong, the US-trained graduate, concurred. “I think the youth’s national pride would never diminish as we are always proud of every remarkable achievement of the country.

“But the key question is: Is the government really listening to us and caring about our interests?”

How Vietnamese students spend money?
================================================== ==

VietNamNet Bridge – The surveys carried out within the framework of the projects on finance education for students have shown surprising things about how Vietnamese students spend money, and pointed out that parents still keep puzzled in managing their children’s spending.

Spending money to show the upper classes in the society

A lot of families complain that they do not have enough time to take care for their children. A lot of parents decide to make up for this by giving more money to children, so that they can find amusement activities themselves. The “money abundance” and the lack of strict management are the main reasons that make a part of students fall into social evils.

From now to June 2012, the HCM City Education and Training Department, together with Save the Children, Citi Foundation, will bring the projects on finance education to the students of 50 high schools in HCM City. The surveys conducted within the framework of the projects can show surprising figures about the high spending level of a part of students and the embarrassment of parents in managing their children’s spending.

The surveys have found out that, students receive 50,000-300,000 dong on average as pocket money a week. Especially, a group of students from rich families of some international schools, Le Quy Don, Marie Curie receives more. 36 percent of students spend 3-5 million dong a month, while 25 percent spend 500,000 dong per day.

One third of students say the money parents give is not enough for them; therefore, they do not have money for urgent needs. Many of them decide to borrow from relatives and friends to satisfy their needs.

44 percent of students from rich families use their pocket money to buy fashionable clothes, 35 percent on amusement activities, while only 21 percent spend money on the things that serve their studies.

Students spend most of their money to upgrade their appearance (to buy clothes, cosmetics), to attend parties and entertainment activities at luxurious places, because they believe that this is the way of spending of rich people, which can show their high positions in the society.

An 11th grade female student said that when she was small, she used the clothes bought by the mother. However, nowadays, she chooses clothes for herself. She only wears well branded clothes, or she feels diffident before the friends.

Therefore, though receiving 400,000 dong per week from parents, the student is always short of money, and she always asks for more money.

Parents give money and forget to manage it

According to a survey of Save the Children, the parents of Marie Curie and Nguyen Du School gave money to children based on the estimates about their children’s spending. However, they did not check if the children used the money for the right purposes.

Though all the parents affirmed the importance of educating children about the value of money and labor, they do not care what their children spend money for.

According to Tran Thi Hue from Save the Children, there are two contradictory tendencies in parents’ thoughts about giving money to children. Some parents keep a strict control over the spending of the children, because they believe that the children are still too small to spend money. Meanwhile, other parents simply give money to children and do not know what the children do with the money.

Only 31 percent of students once discussed with parents about how to spend money, while 2/3 of students never consult with parents about how to manage their budgets, and they do not want to explain their spending.

A lot of students said that their parents are too busy to spend time to learn about how the children spend money. Therefore, they simply spend money and never ask themselves where the money comes from. .They simply ask for the money from parents when they need money.

Mimic battle, a new pastime of Saigonees
==================================================

VietNamNet Bridge – Paintball is a new game in HCM City but it has quickly become a favorite weekend hobby of many young people, especially office employees.

Paintball is a sport in which players compete, in teams or individually, to eliminate opponents by tagging them with capsules containing water soluble dye and gelatin shell outside (referred to as paintballs) propelled from a device called a paintball marker (commonly referred to as a paintball gun). Paintballs have a non-toxic, biodegradable, water soluble mineral-oil.

Games are played on outdoor fields. A game field is scattered with natural or artificial terrain, which players use for tactical cover. Rules for playing paintball vary, but can include capture the flag, elimination, ammunition limits, defending or attacking a particular point or area, or capturing objects of interest hidden in the playing area. Depending on the variant played, games can last from seconds to hours, or even days in scenario play.

This game was imported into HCM City for nearly two years, even later than in other provinces like Can Tho and Lam Dong, but it has developed very rapidly in Vietnam’s largest city. HCM City currently has three paintball fields, which are being standardized.

Huu Ky, a young correspondent, said: “After a tired week, I and my colleagues often go to a paintball field to play mimic battle as a good way to relax. Previously, we had to go to Madagui tourist site in Lam Dong or to Can Tho city but this game has been held in Saigon now.”

Mai Nhu, an office employee, said: “I and my colleagues sometimes play a mimic battle to relax. This game is as active as playing football and women can also play it with men.”

Nguyen Tien Cong, deputy director of Tri Long Company, which runs a paintball field in HCM City, said that the guns used in this game can cause wounds to players so they are controlled strictly by supervisors and referees. Each game is under the witness of at least one referee and two supervisors. Players are always reminded to not take off their protective masks during the game. Any player who breaks this rule will be expelled from the field. Actually, some players have their eyes injured.

Cong said that this game is not violent, but a game of teamwork. The game helps training physical strength, fundamental military tactics, discipline, self-awareness and teamwork spirit.

In some countries, paintball is seen as a sport, with organized tournaments. Tri Long plans to organize such an event in Vietnam. Cong said that the first tournament may be held in 2012.

Unseemly scenes as Tet visitors seek luck from Temple of Literature in Hanoi
================================================== ========
Adult and kids climbed over red strings to touch the stone steles in the Temple of Literature last Wednesday in the belief that it would ensure academic success and promote longevity.
“Mung 1 tet cha, mung 2 tet me, mung 3 tet thay”, goes a Vietnamese saying, meaning that on the first day of the Lunar New Year, one visits relatives on the father's side, the second day, the mother's side, and the third day, the teachers.

Accordingly, on Wednesday, thousands of people flocked to the famous Temple of Literature in Hanoi, known as Vietnam’s first university.

And as it has been happening every year of late, the visitors, helped by loose management of the relic site’s management board and local government, created unseemly scenes, violating regulations with impunity.

Motorbike parking fees to the temple, built in 1070, is VND20,000 (US$0.95) each, ten times the capital’s regulation fee of VND2,000. But thousands of people, not wanting to spend time lining up in front of the two ticket booths, chose to buy the tickets from several black market touts offering them for VND25,000-30,000.

Inside the temple are the famous 82 steles recording results of royal examinations held between 1442 and 1780 during the reign of the Le and Mac dynasties. Regulations clearly say these are not to be touched by the public; and boards and barriers are placed around them to prevent people from encroaching the area.

However, both adults and children ignored the boards and climbed over the barriers to touch the steles that are in the form of tortoise-mounted tablets. They believe that touching the tortoise, traditionally considered a symbol of longevity in Vietnamese culture, can provide good results in studies.

In addition, there was the odd presence of plates surrounding the steles to collect money. The crowd seldom placed their offerings on the plates or in the donation boxes nearby. Instead, they threw and tossed the money on the ground, and even into the Van pond inside the temple.

Several food stalls inside the temple generated a lot of trash, and with the cleaning staff absent during the day, it piled up to make an ugly sight.

Looking for beauty in the highlands
================================================== =

Travelling to the Northwest highlands of Vietnam, visitors are charmed not only by the sceneries and ardent traditional fermented drinks, but also by the enchanting beauty of highland girls.

The sight of beautiful young girls in their colorful clothes smiling decorously in the bright spring sun, and then quickly looking down, while swiftly reaping the golden rice on the terraced fields can speed up one’s heart beat while slowing his footsteps.

Eyebrows as delicate as sparrows’ wings

I met Lo van Nhay, an artist of tinh tau (a folk music instrument of the ethnic people), in the borderland of Phong Tho in the northwestern province Lai Chau on an afternoon, when he was tuning his tinh tau for a dance festival later that night. I happily followed this over-70-year-old artist, crossing Nam So River, part of the upper Da River, to reach his mountain village.

Standing in front of a large stilt house under the branches of orchid trees, he informed the host of our presence by strumming his tinh tau. I was stunned by the beauty of the girls rushing out to greet the visitors. Each of them owned a special beauty, both mysterious and charming, with their healthy figures, fair complexion and sweet voices like the singing of birds.

I was captivated especially by their eyes, sparkling and deep like the shadows of the mountains at sunset, and decorated by the curved dark brows as delicate as forest birds’ wings in flight.

Thai girls in the Northwest have long been reputed for their orchid-like fair complexion, sweet voices and slender figures like the mountainous flame-grass. However, this was the first time I had the privilege to see so many of them. I was especially fortunate to see them at their rehearsal for the xoe dance festival night – the night for their distinct folk dance.

Looking at the bare-foot dancers moving in the harmonious rhythm of the tinh tau, I felt tipsy even before finishing the glass of San Lung wine, quite possibly due to the breath-taking beauty of the land and the people.

According to Vang Thi Hoi, an elderly dancer, Lai Chau used to be the highland capital of powerful landlords like Deo Van On and Deo Van Long, who selected many beautiful girls to be their dancers, one of whom was Vang Thi Hoi herself. Many pretty Thai girls today are the descendants of the beautiful dancers of yesterday.

The Thai minority group settle themselves along Da, Thao, Ma, and Gam rivers in the northwest provinces such as Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Lao Cai and Tuyen Quang.

Composed of the Black Thai (Tay Dam) and the White Thai (Tay Khao), the ethnic group sets up their villages in valleys and cultivates wet rice for food. Hence, Thai women play an important role in their family. It is from their hands that colorful brocades are produced and become well-known outside the national borders.

Beautiful flowers on the mountains

Another day, as I was wandering in the remote area of Lao Cai, I met A Mu Sung, a border soldier, at Lung Po, where the clear, green spring from Hoang Lien Son mountain range winds itself like a dragon before joining the alluvial opaque Red River. He told me, “You are not the only one who gets lost in the northwest highland. Many others also forget the time when they get here.”

Joining A Mu Sung, I found myself drifting through the villages of Dao, Mong and Ha Nhi people. It was the harvest season of pineapples. In the chilly air, the girls’ cheeks flushed like peach blossoms on their silky-smooth skin.

Spending a night at Nam Mit, a village of Ha Nhi people on the mountainside, I could hardly take my eyes off Vu Ca Chy, the beautiful Ha Nhi girl who was mending her lover’s shirt. Born to a poor family, this young maid possesses an exquisite beauty with a slim figure and a straight nose on her graceful face.

The Ha Nhi ethnic group lives in Lao Cai, Lai Chau, and Dien Bien. Although sub-groups amongst them used to lead a nomadic life on high mountainsides, nowadays most Ha Nhi people make their home in thick clay-walled houses. They are conversant with cultivation and possess a special dyeing technique by which they make elegant indigo garments with green straps, using natural dyeing materials from forest trees.

There are several theories about their specific charm, such as the one that says they are the descendants of a tall, well-built race from the further North. Personally, I prefer the idea that their way of life in a mountainous environment gives them a healthy, strong and nicely built figure.

Each flower a special beauty of its own

The high mountains and thick forests of Northwest Vietnam still hide from us their numerous highland beauties.

When I first came to this territory, I secretly wished to find fairy lands teeming with beautiful young ladies. The more I traveled, the more I realized that beauties can be found everywhere and do not belong to any unique area or ethnic group. We can see beautiful girls in Phong Tho in Lai Chau; Chiem Hoa and Na Hang in Tuyen Quang; and Thanh Son in Phu Tho.

And it is also true that anywhere in the Northwest highlands we can be dazzled by the stunning beauty of a girl either from a Thai, Tay, Dao, Giay, Cao Lan, Pa Then, or Mong village. Like a wild flower in the forest or a free bird in the sky, each of them possesses her own gentle, charming beauty.

Teaching English at universities: lecturers talk, students keep quiet
================================================== ==========
VietNamNet Bridge – Foreign language lecturers now still talk too much in teaching hours, while this should be the thing students need to do to ensure the effective teaching of foreign languages.

Foreign language is a compulsory subject at universities. However, this is not the major of students; therefore, they do not spend much time on learning foreign languages. As a result, a lot of students have to go to foreign language centers to repeat learning hours, or buy foreign language certificates to satisfy the requirements set by employers.

University graduates cannot meet standards on foreign languages

Le Duc Han from Phu Tho province finished school two years ago. However, the former student of the Hanoi University for Civil Engineering still cannot find a good job in his trained major, because he could not pass the English exam.

Han said that he began learning English at high school, but he did not spend much time on the subject because he concentrated on three main subjects to prepare for the university entrance exam. The English study was also bad at the university, and he never could pass the English exam.

Nguyen Thi Thuong, a former student of the Hanoi Academy of Journalism and Communication, said that she nearly got nothing in foreign language skills in the four years at the university. In order to fulfill her tasks at the media company, where she is working for, Thuong has to go to the evening foreign language class.

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Vinh Hien also said at a conference discussing the implementation of the plan to teach foreign languages at universities, that while universities have made considerable progress in teaching other subjects, they nearly have not made any progress in teaching foreign languages. “A lot of students still cannot use foreign languages after they graduate schools. This year is really a bitter defeat,” he said.

One of the reasons behind this, according to the Ministry of Education and Training MOET is the unreasonable curriculums drawn up by universities which are too heavy in theory. Students simply go to class to learn grammar rules, while they cannot practice the four major skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing.

Dr Nguyen Ngoc Hung from the National Foreign Language Plan by 2020, has pointed out that lecturers now talk too much, while this thing should be done by students. “Only the student-centered teaching method is the effective method,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Duong Bach Nhat from the Duy Tan University has blamed the problem on the different knowledge of input students. He said that it is very difficult to classify students to put them into different classes in order to have reasonable teaching methods.

MOET vows to stop the “foreign language illiteracy”

In order to stop the “foreign language illiteracy”, MOET has initiated the National Foreign Language Plan by 2020. According to Nguyen Le Huong, Deputy Director of the University Education Department of the ministry, the plan strives to make university graduates to have certain qualification in foreign languages.

Under the plan, the graduates of non-foreign language schools need to understand the main ideas of speakers and handle the situations. This will be the minimum requirement on university graduates.

Nevertheless, the ministry has been warned that this would be a very difficult task for schools, especially when they still have poor material facilities and lack standardized lecturers. Hung thinks that in order to do that, it is necessary to set up foreign language faculties at the schools which have good conditions, and develop the network of teachers.

MOET is planning to set up a new group for university entrance exam – A1 (A1 examinees will have to take three exams of mathematics, physics and English), which it hopes with help improve the English skills of students.

Tet in the eyes of foreigners
=====================================

VietNamNet Bridge – While some foreigners left Vietnam for romantic beaches in Thailand or Bali during the lunar New Year holiday, many stayed in the country to welcome the traditional Tet.

Mark Conroy, 65, representative of East Meet West in the central city of Da Nang, said that he has celebrated 18 Vietnamese Tet with his family. He often spent his entire time with his family.

He said the most interesting thing of Vietnamese Tet, is that Tet is the time for family union and for friends to visit each other. Conroy said he often helped his wife make banh chung (square glutinous rice cake) and decorate their home.

Conroy could not forget his first Tet in Vietnam with his wife’s family. At that time, he did not know all about Vietnamese custom so he was very surprised of “mung tuoi” (money-giving) custom. He said that custom is very interesting.

Vietnamese Tet is also very enjoyable for Kathlee, 60, and her husband, the American owner of Bread of Life restaurant in Da Nang city. Kathlee said she and her husband were very surprised to see Vietnamese people to go shopping tens of days before Tet and they grouped up and visited each others for many days.

Kathlee’s husband, Bod, 63, was very interested in going to Tet flower markets, play folk games and especially being invited to Tet parties by locals. The couple also prepared banh chung, ginger jam and some Vietnamese food to welcome their friends.

Fourteen years ago, after several tours to Vietnam, the couple decided to settle in this country. They opened a restaurant for foreign tourists in Da Nang. It is very special that the restaurant staffs are all hearing-impaired children.

Richard KH Chua, Singaporean Manager of Bao Son Group, who has been living in Vietnam for over ten years, said that Tet is also an important holiday for Singapore. This is a chance for people to visit their elderly relatives.

Richard’s wife is a Hanoian woman so in the first day of the year, he and his wife visited his parent-in-law and his wife’s elder sister. They visited their friends the days later.

Anthony Gill, General Director of La Residence Hue Hotel, said: “We are very busy during Tet. Though the weather is sometimes gloomy, January and February are still the good time for tourism. Some visitors of ours know clearly about custom and tradition of Vietnamese Tet, but some of them question why all shops close during Tet,” Gill said.

This was Gill’s fifth Tet in Vietnam. He said he liked the warm atmosphere of Tet. He also liked the “mung tuoi” custom. He still remembered his first Tet when he and his wife joined a dinner with Vietnamese singer Ho Ngoc Ha.

Albert Lafuente, Business and Marketing Manager of The Nam Hai Resort, said he liked the similarity between Vietnamese Tet, the Christmas and New Year holiday in the Philippines, where he was born. In both countries, this is the time for family union, for visiting friends, for presenting gifts to each others and to make special cuisines.

They like the Tet atmosphere and family union but they do not like the “party way” and the increase of prices during Tet in Vietnam.

Jim Sullivan, Managing director of Mandarin Media Jim, said that he had to pretend to have hepatitis A to refuse drink.

Keith Thibeth, whose wife is a Hue woman, said that Tet is being commercialized. Traders take advantage of this time to raise prices of goods.

Our learning also depend whether we learn the correct or the RUBBISH vietnamese :D

Preserving language a must, say experts
================================================== =
VietNamNet Bridge – The Vietnamese language has been developing very quickly along with the development of the country but many strange and complicated words and phrases being used by young people nowadays have altered the language, says Associate Professor Ha Quang Nang.

He agrees that the country's open doors also mean opening the mother tongue to new vocabulary through the borrowing and combining of words from other languages to create new words and phrases, which grows and modernises the language.

"The growing Vietnamese vocabulary has helped increase communication in the fields of economics, trade, and scientific research," says Nang, adding that these words make Vietnamese more meaningful.

However, apart from these new phrases, there are many others that have a vague meaning, or even mean absolutely nothing, in Vietnamese. "Some Vietnamese researchers have said our Vietnamese will face a crisis in our lifetime," says Nang.

He pointed out that many people fail to use the proper Vietnamese structure when speaking, or use many English words at schools or in daily life. Sometimes English words are paired with Vietnamese in advertisements.

Many shops hang billboards that are written half in Vietnamese and half in English, causing confusion among people, but more importantly, damaging Vietnamese, he says.

As a result, many young people don't really understand all of the Vietnamese words they read or say.

"The ‘disorder' and ‘pollution' of Vietnamese reflects the disrespect of the mother tongue which has caused a loss in our traditional, moral, philosophy and national cultural characteristics," says Nang.

In response to Nang's ideas, teacher Tran Quang Dai of the Tran Phu Secondary School in the central province of Ha Tinh says that to help the country's solid development and integration into the world, Vietnamese people should try their best to improve their Vietnamese and protect it.

Dai says he does his best to teach Vietnamese correctly and tries to encourage his students to improve their Vietnamese through their writing and speaking.

"All teachers should be ashamed to use complicated and nonsense Vietnamese words," says Dai.

His sister's family, who has been living in Germany for more than two decades, has tried their best to preserve Vietnamese at home.

Dai says his sister makes her entire family to speak Vietnamese at home and anywhere they socialise with other Vietnamese people.

"She often asks me to send her Vietnamese text books she can use to teach her children. She said we are Vietnamese so we should know how to speak Vietnamese," he says.

As a result, Nang's two nephews, aged 22 and 20, speak Vietnamese very well in addition to their German language skills.

"My parents are very proud of them and say that our Vietnamese origin will never be lost," he says.

President Ho Chi Minh once said "Vietnamese is our long-standing and invaluable national asset."

"Vietnamese is an important factor contributing to the nation's principle, national characteristics and cultural quintessence," he said.

The president always paid attention to preserving Vietnamese and educating people in speaking and writing Vietnamese and using a larger and more contemporary vocabulary.

Many teachers and linguistic researchers have followed the president's words. Teacher Hoang Xuan Tam, 70, is an example.

Despite having invested more than 50 years in researching and preserving Vietnamese, Tam said he is still an ‘illiterate' in Vietnamese because it is so comprehensive.

"I have to check the dictionary very carefully before teaching any new words to my students," said Tam.

Vietnamese researcher Nguyen Duy Xuan has launched the website nguyenduyxuan.net to call on people to preserve the Vietnamese soul.

The site aims to encourage people to exchange views on how to use Vietnamese correctly and effectively.

"I hope to receive effective responses from teachers, students and readers to contribute their ideas to protecting and preserving our Vietnamese," he says.

Motivated by money
=================================

Poor wages dampen enthusiasm among State employees and affect the delivery of public services.

Most workers rely only on their salary to pay for their living expenses, with little in the way of investments earning extra income. Salaries in general and the minimum wage in particular therefore have a very important role to play in the daily lives of most employees.

In order to enable employees to live on their salary, Article No 56 of the Labour Code regulates that the minimum wage is determined in accordance with living costs. When the cost of living rises and the spending power of wages fall, the government will adjust the minimum wage accordingly.

Mr Phung Quang Huy, Director of the Bureau for Employer Activities at the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), said that around the world the minimum wage is only considered a symbolic wage that relates to social security, rather than acting as an actual wage.

In Vietnam, though, because negotiations on working conditions between employees and employers remain undeveloped, the minimum wage has become the actual wage for most employees. In recent times employees, especially those in the government sector, have continually complained that their wage is too low and fails to cover the basic cost of living.

Basic consumption of an employee can include costs for food, water and electricity bills, travel expenses, and social expenses such as those for attending birthdays and weddings. For most if not all, their wage doesn’t cover these basics.

Consequently, low wages have a negative impact on working efficiency, especially among State employees, and the operation of the State apparatus.

Dr Le Dang Doanh, former Director of the Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM), acknowledges that wages for State officials have remained low and their real value has fallen because of high inflation.

When asked by VET whether low wages would lead to low working efficiency among State officials, Dr Doanh replied, speaking as a delegate of the National Assembly, that poor pay will always equal poor performance. “When paid a low wage, employees have no motivation to work hard,” he said. “So they will neglect their tasks and do other work during office hours to earn extra income. This leads to low working efficiency.”

Moreover, according to Ms Xia Wang, Director of the Research Office at the Institute of Labour and Wage Studies under China’s Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, low public servant wages leads to an exodus of talent and, most probably, corruption. Of a similar mind, Dr Thang Van Phuc, former Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, told local media recently that when wages don’t reflect the value of labour, public servants will inevitably lack the motivation to be committed and dedicated to their jobs. “The requirements of administrative reform as currently set out are to change public services to serve the people and development,” he said. “But low wages will never ensure high quality public services.”

Harassment by public servants has affected the reputation of public services among the population, he continued. This is a matter of concern because it relates to the trust of the people in the machinery of the State - the public service.

In an online public poll seeking the views of and experiences with public administrative procedures of 1,470 people nationwide, conducted by UNDP Vietnam and VietnamNet from June to September 2010, many respondents were dissatisfied with the behaviour of public servants. “I am an immigrant in Hanoi and do not have private housing,” a planning and investment expert said of her experience in dealing with household registration procedures in Hanoi. “When I went to register as a temporary resident with the local ward police, they demanded a lot of paperwork. Eventually they said bluntly that I had to ‘thank’ them with VND200,000 ($10), in addition to VND50,000 ($2.5) for the paperwork if I wanted to register long term.”

Dr Doanh added that besides normal harassment by public servants, there were many State officials who took advantage of their positions to make money.

Although their wages are low, these State officials own expensive cars and large houses and can send their children overseas to study. “State officials clearly enrich themselves when performing their job, and this leads to further corruption and lessening prestige for the State apparatus,” he said. With the low wages being offered, he added, it is difficult for the government sector to attract qualified and talented staff.

Since 1993 Vietnam has adjusted the minimum wage several times but the wage for cadres and public servants is still too low, meeting just 30 - 50 per cent of their needs. Consequently, 16,000 State employees resigned their positions between 2006 and 2009.

Moreover, a recent report from the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs, submitted to the Standing Committee of the National Assembly, showed that from 2007 to present, 1,353 public servants in the social insurance sector resigned due to the low wages and absence of allowances, despite the heavy workload and complex nature of their jobs.

The average income in 2010 (including salary and benefits) was nearly VND4 million ($200). In 2011 their average income was increased to nearly VND4.9 million ($245).

Therefore, according to Dr Doanh, there must be basic wage reform for State officials, together with curbing inflation and reforming the State apparatus, in order to identify a suitable basic wage for employees, so that they feel assured about covering their living costs and can completely focus on their work.

Vietnam ladies’ dens for foreigners in city
===============================================
Pretty young girls, mainly around 19-20 years old, play the role of hosts at the restaurants. They are hired to receive foreign men in secluded rooms for karaoke singing and then join the men in their homes after 23:30pm.

Many of the girls are college students attracted by copious tips from their night-shift labor: VND300,000 – 400,000 (US$14-19) for sitting with a male expat for one or two hours, and another $100-400 for spending a night, starting from 23:30pm.

The restaurants cluster themselves in Districts 1 and 3 in the center of the city, with guests mainly coming from South Korea, China, Japan and Singapore. There, girls are called ‘lady,’ and are actually treated like no more than prostitutes, the only difference being price.

Tuoi Tre journalists disguised themselves as ladies of some of the ‘dens’ for three months and sketched out the ambience of entertainment that ‘elegant girls’ and ‘successful businessmen’ build up.

Around 50 such ‘dens’ exist on streets such as Ngo Van Nam, Pham Ngu Lao, Pham Ngoc Thach, Nguyen Thai Binh, Chu Manh Trinh and Bui Vien in the center of the city, which is the busiest economic hub of Vietnam.

Specialty

At 8pm -- or just three hours after the closing time of most offices, Jee Bar in the area called Westerners’ Town on Pham Ngu Lao Street becomes busy with the appearance of foreign men.

The whirr of the outlets of air conditioners adjusted at maximum blowing capacity seems not enough to cool down the atmosphere in the lounge. A 20 square meter room in the corner became cramped with 30 ‘ladies’ who are ‘staff of entertainment,’ waiting for their turns to go out to ‘greet’ customers.

These young ladies were dressed in skirts that exposed more flesh than cloth and were busy making up eyes and cheeks and lips -- ingredients of their night recipe to earn money.

Suddenly, a temperate voice of a woman spoke up through a handie-talkie: “Girls come out for greeting, girls come out for greeting”. The sentence or command was repeated twice, meaning new male customers were waiting.

“Those who can go with guests queue up on the right, those who can’t on the left,” Mrs. Hoang, manager of the restaurant, told the girls.

Upon seeing a girl who is a reporter disguised as a new comer standing embarrassed and confused while all the others, except two, move to the right side, Hoang gently asked, “Babysan, can you new comer go with guests?”

Another lady standing by her side nudged the new comer, explaining, “Going with guests means sleeping with them. It’s to meet all their desires.”

With Hoang waving them out, the girls stand in queue and enter a secluded room with several Taiwanese men, all saying ‘Hello’ in Vietnamese and Chinese and making big bows in front of the men to wait for their picking.

The men laughed, one of them stood up and spoke Vietnamese in a slight accent, “Nice, nice.” He gradually approached each girl and gazed at them carefully. He then put his hand into the bra of a girl and asked Hoang something in Chinese.

Hoang turned back to the girl, “He asks if you can go with him to a hotel after the party?” After receiving a nod, the man held her hand and took her to sit on the sofa by his side. Other men were also sitting on it and deciding who to pick for each of them.

Those who were not selected left the room and waited for another turn.

Usually, the girls who are in good shape with developed breasts and hips are the favorite, a girl said.

Now, the most popular restaurant in the city is Migi, on Pham Ngoc Thach Street in District 3, which is well equipped with ten secluded rooms and 70 regular ladies.

All of them are conversational in Chinese, Korean and English, and most of them are willing to spend the night at home with guests or in hotels, except for those in ‘technical period’.

If they want to take home a lady, a guest has to ‘book’ and pay the manager in advance, and their ladies will only leave for the rendezvous at 23:30 -- the closing time of the restaurant.

Apart from the tip of $14-19 for around an hour in the restaurant, a lady is paid $100-400 for a night. Usually, a party of 4-5 men with their girls at a restaurant spends $400-3,000.

Le Hong Lien, a lady at a bar District 1, admitted that her job is nothing more than a ‘bia om’ girl, who drinks beer and then spends the night with men, generally prostitution.

The advantages of working there are earning good money, enjoying amenities, and freedome to catch up with local friends and relatives.

It’s easier to avoid the police in this job, as guests usually take the girls home, not to hotels, she added. The other thing is that foreigners rarely force them to over-drink, as locals do, although sex is desired by men universally.

Ladies who are introduced as students are also preferred, said a lady named Le, who introduced herself a student of the tourism department of a university.

At Migi, most ladies are introduced as students, who are priced from $100-150 for an hour in a hotel.

Duy, a manager of a restaurant on Ngo Van Nam Street, said his business has made a huge profit. Each party gives him a net profit of $200 – 1,000, as girls are not paid salary and their total income comes from tips and overnight labor.

Each night, a girl receives 3-4 parties before leaving for their rendezvous until the following day.

Striptease in restaurants
=====================================
Regular guests call restaurants with striptease a ‘box,’ as each small room is thorougly secluded by partitions without a window, and each man is coupled with a young ‘worker of entertainment’.

They are all guarded by bulky men at the entrance gate. Motorbikes are also parked with the number plates facing the wall, as if to hide their owners’ identification.

This kind of service is totally illegal, but it’s interesting to discover that it’s not difficult at all to find such restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City, and in other cities in Vietnam.

VND5 million for two minutes

On a day during the holiday on the threshold of the New Year, in Binh Tan District, which is considered the ‘center’ of striptease restaurants, a group of men got out of a taxi and entered Mai Trinh 1 restaurant. However, they were sweetly refused service.

The owner, a woman in her 30s, introduced herself as Tuyet. She was friendly with guests, “Pardon me, it’s crowded here now, can’t take you in.”

“Please come to Mai Trinh 2, just close here,” she added.

Less than five minutes after entering the new establishment, some 100m away from the previous one, the men were courted by two girls and Tuyet.

“Why only two? No more?” one of the men asked.

“So many guests now, but these girls come to greet you first and others will follow,” Tuyet replied gently.

After several cans of beer were opened, Tuyet winked at her girls and they began their striptease show. Underwear was thrown to the floor.

Tuyet was then talking on a mobile phone, giving directions to her restaurants. “Come here quickly, I have both birds perching and flying,” she joked, meaning her girls can meet all desires.

Tuyet also took off her clothes amid cheers by guests and other girls.

One of the girls began her ‘special show’ by picking up banknotes that men scattered on the table as the fee of the show with her genitals.

After receiving a copious tip for the show, the girls turned the music up to maximum volume and danced with all their flesh exposed in front of guests.

The show came to its end with a new scene: beer bathing. All of the girls opened beer cans and took turns pouring it onto each other.

Within just two minutes, the show ended. Beer and tips cost in total VND5 million (US$238).

Saying goodbye to the guests, Tuyet said, “I have to come back to Mai Trinh 1 as new guests are waiting for me.”

She didn’t forget to remind her girls to serve the men wholeheartedly before striking out in her high-heeled shoes out the door.

Without going far, striptease restaurants with similar shows can also be found in the center of Ho Chi Minh City.

The most reputable restaurants are Anh Tuan on Nguyen Van Dau Street in Binh Thanh District, Karaoke New York on Le Lai Street in District 1, and Spa Glee in Tan Binh District.

In some restaurants, the girls are willing to have sex with guests in the rooms or at a hotel at an average price of VND500,000 ($24).

Spa Glee, which even has a collection of male staff members, is reportedly a rendezvous for homosexual men.

Don’t give me candies, give me my change
=============================================
In the morning, I ride to buy a Tuoi Tre newspaper sold for VND4500 at a newsstand. When I give VND5000 (US 25 cents), the seller hands me the newspaper and a candy, saying he does not have the change. I go to a café to have some coffee and read morning papers. When it comes time to pay, I receive two candies instead of VND1000 in change. Every morning, I receive three unwanted candies.

You may think it is a trivial thing and unnecessary to receive small change back. But if you insist getting back your VND500 (US 2.5 cents) or VND1000 (US 5 cents), sellers will react with grumpiness. To save face, most people will forget about the change to avoid bad comments or stares.

But have you ever thought that if you insist on receiving VND500 after buying a newspaper, you will have exactly VND4500 to pay the next day? And if you refuse two unwanted candies at a café, you will have VND1000 every day?

Many foreigners in Vietnam ask for change and do not hesitate to wait for VND500 from sellers. You may find this strange, wondering why foreigners are so stingy. However, the more you think about it, the more you will realize that it is an interesting way to save money for one’s self and society, as small change will add up to big surplus.

Just a simple calculation: if 10,000 shoppers do not care about VND500 change for a month, the shop will automatically gain VND5 million (US$250) for doing nothing.

Let’s adopt this saving behavior by saying: “Don’t give me candies, give me my change.”

Firms try to encourage workers to return after Tet
================================================== =======
Enterprises are facing labour shortages after Tet as many workers have yet to return to work following the break.

In early days of the Lunar New Year, only enterprises at industrial park and export processing zones that have good social welfare policies have been able to encourage their workers to return after their holiday leave.

HCM City: Serious worker shortage

Several enterprises are applying various methods to attract workers after Tet, including providing lucky money and providing a half month advance on February’s salary.

According to an anonymous leader of a sport shoe firm in HCM City’s Tan Thuan Industrial Park, to date several of the company’s factories have yet to resume operations as workers from central and northern provinces have yet to return to work.

HCM City Industrial Park-Export Processing Zone’s Job Placement Centre is offering to recruit over 5,000 workers for the garment and textile, electronic assembly and engineering sectors.

Nguyen Thanh Tung, the centre’s director, said despite recruitment demands being as high as previous years, the number of people applying for jobs remains modest, resulting in significant labour shortages.

An anonymous official of the HCM City Industrial Park-Export Processing Zone Authority (HEPZA) said over 60 per cent of workers at industrial parks and export processing zones were not from the locality and had failed to book transport to return to work. Many enterprises resumed their operations after Tet with only half of their workforce.

Enterprises that have better social welfare policies, including those subsidising transport costs recorded the highest number of workers returning to work.

Hanoi: Over 90 per cent of workers return to work

Almost all enterprises at eight industrial parks in Hanoi resumed operations on January 30 with nearly 120,000 workers.

Nguyen Thi Thuy, a worker at a foreign-invested company at the Thang Long Industrial Park, said “This year, several companies at the park have implemented better social welfare policies for workers, which has encouraged them to return to work on time after the Tet holiday.”

Workers at major companies such as Canon have given lucky money to workers who return to work after their holiday as a move to encourage their workforce.

Dinh Quoc Toan, chairman of Hanoi Industrial Park-Export Processing Zone’s Trade Union, said most of enterprises would attract over 90 per cent of their workers to return to work, some had even encouraged 98 per cent of their workers to return after their holiday leave thanks to their improved social welfare policies.

Dong Nai, Vung Tau lacking garment and textile, leather shoes workers

Huynh Tan Kiet, chairman of Dong Nai’s provincial Labour Union, said between 80 per cent and 85 per cent of workers in the province have returned to work after Tet holiday.

In Ba Ria-Vung Tau, several enterprises operating in leather shoes production, garment, paper and seafood processing have resumed operations even though many workers have yet to come return following their holiday leave.

Binh Duong: Workers picked up

Chairman of Binh Duong Province industrial park trade union Bui Thanh Nhan said as of January 30, 75 per cent of workers had returned to work after the Tet holiday. On January 31, 60 per cent of enterprises at local industrial parks had reusmed their operations.

Hoa Sen Group at Song Than 2 industrial park churned out the first pack of products since Lunar January 5 to meet an order.

Nguyen Hong Anh, Human Resource Manager at the 3/2 Garment and Textile Company said the firm has organised cars to pick up over 1,500 workers after Lunar January 6 to ensure operations resumed on schedule. Until now, nearly 80 per cent of workers had returned to work.
