can i again state the obvious for the unintelligent, but context in any language is important so without context it makes it extremely hard to translate BUT>..some of us are smart

I guess...
. H = bay gio (short typing of some viets)= now or right now
"Vao Chua Minh ngoi thuyen"= enter Temple we do religious meditation. "ngoi thuyen": is religious meditation.
V= vo or baxa
" Minh bay ra do chi co 50phut ahLent h co di voi v ko?"= so will go with baxa now? We fly over there just 50minutes ah, so will Chong=Ox go with bx?

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Ngoi thuyen = sit boat:D
Ngoi thien = meditation

But go into temple "sit boat" seems out of context. Mediation seems more like it. Maybe the person got spelling mistake :D

I think your local friend meant only "xui" for bad luck, no natives will use "hen xui" for bad luck among all the vietnamese that i knew.

If u break up these two words, "hen" could means the good side of luck, and "xui" could means the bad side of luck. Therefore "hen xui" is often used by natives to mean "unknown luck", saying hen xui as bad luck is only half correct or half wrong, depending how you look at it.

Other use, e.g.
Hen hay Xui, meaning good or bad luck.

Other uses of bad luck,
Xui, xui xeo, khong may, khong may man

A look inside male brothels

Male sex workers in Vietnamese brothels usually don’t ‘receive’ guests who are strange or have no recommendation from a certain acquaintance, as the service is banned here.

So, the opportunity to visit these brothels is quite limited due to security measures, especially after police arrested two male prostitutes in a hotel in Ho Chi Minh City last month in one of the first such cases publicly announced by local media.

Luckily, Tuoi Tre journalists were allowed to visit a few such businesses - meant to satisfy the needs of both women and gays – thanks to the assistance of ‘social peers’ who are officers of State programs intended to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases that have close connections with the brothel owners.

In return Tuoi Tre pledged to protect their identity.

Districts 3, 8, Phu Nhuan, Tan Binh, and Tan Phu have brothels with male sex workers.

They have many regular clients who are mostly single, divorced women and even elderly women. Normal price ranges from VND200,000 – 500,000 (US$10 – 25) per session, though as much as US$100 was charged once.

A number of African men have also come to the city to work as prostitutes in parks such as Le Thi Rieng in District 1, Hoa Binh in District 5, and Gia Dinh in Phu Nhuan District.

All of the brothels are disguised as barber shops, spa and massage parlors, or make-up shops. The places are ‘decorated’ with a couple of swiveling and collapsible chairs in the front hall, but these are rarely used as guests enter and walk straight to rooms in the back.

Each brothel has rooms for at least ten male prostitutes as well as rooms to ‘receive guests’. A reception room has minimal facilities, such as a pillow, a mattress, a light, towels, a shelf to store gel tubes and condoms, and a fan.

At a brothel deep down an alley off Truong Chinh Street in Tan Binh, the owner agreed to allow Tuoi Tre to have a brief look inside his facility. During the visit, six to seven men were sleeping on the floor, while others played cards on the first floor, where they queue up for guests’ selection.

After a man is selected, he follows his guest to the upper floor, which is divided into many small rooms of around six square meters in size. The rooms are in two categories - one with an air conditioner and the other with a fan.

At another brothel down an alley on Vo Van Tan Street in District 3, men begin their work day by 3:00pm. The sex workers there have strong bodies and attractive faces. The location is a three storey house rented for VND8 million ($385) a month. Numerous men were either watching TV or playing cards.

A woman around the age of 30, the owner, blamed one of the men for failing to alert her in advance before taking guests to her room. At the time she was lying with a sleeping man.

However, she was later happy to explain many aspects of her brothel. Pointing at a room with a locked door, she said there was a guest inside.

She admitted she has around 16 men serving only gays. “They receive guests in other rooms, and may also have guests in my room if the others are occupied,” she told Tuoi Tre.

She pointed at a man sleeping on a mattress and said he had had a guest late the previous night.

During the conversation, the door to one room opened Soon after the guest left, a waiter boy entered to pick up towels and throw them in a bin. Elsewhere, a well dressed, tall man who looked like a State official was about to enter a room.

“He is a familiar guest, coming here every week,” the owner said.

A young guy followed the guest into a bathroom. A few minutes later, they both left for their room, with only a long towel wrapped around their bodies, with trousers and shirts in hands.

The door was then locked and the light turned off.

Male prostitution in Vietnam has been on the increase in recent years, and it has not been dealt with effectively. Only a few cases have been discovered by local authorities.

Donn Collby, a researcher with the AIDS program of Harvard University, estimated that Ho Chi Minh City has over 10,000 male sex workers, and 8,500 others in Hanoi.

“They are exposed to high risk of the infection of sexually transmitted diseases,” he said.

A survey shows that 65 percent of male prostitutes in Vietnam are high school graduates and 19 percent have university diplomas.

Who are the clients of male brothels?
================================================== ========

Male prostitution in Vietnam has existed for a long time but their services, which are illegal in the nation, have not been publicly mentioned, especially by local media.

Normally, contact information for rings and male prostitutes are passed from hand to hand among ‘clients’ in confidence to avoid their relations being revealed or commented on. It is a common practice in a nation heavily influenced by Confucianism.

The clients of these prostitutes are not only women, but also a large number of men from the LGBT community. Some men with wives and children also use the services provided at male brothels.

A transfer in confidence

A male prostitute named H said about his female clients, “Most of them are above the age of 40, divorced or widowed, and have a lot of money.” Many of them contact sex workers via telephone or email to ask them to come to their houses, not hotels, he added.

It takes little time to serve a male client, but receiving a female client may last a whole day and night, H said.

“I am a man, so having a woman with me like that makes me happier. The other reason is that female clients pay a lot.”

Normally, a wealthy female client may give a male sex worker several million dong per night. VND1 million is equivalent to US$48.

H told Tuoi Tre that he currently has ten regular female clients coming from Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau, Bien Hoa, and Can Tho.

“Upon arriving in the city, they call me and we usually start with drinking, then dancing before taking each other to private places such as hotels or rented houses. Most of them always ask for a massage before having sex,” H said.

Women prefer to be fondled first, H said.

But female clients are clear in keeping their relationships with sex workers brief, as they never go beyond their needs for sexual desire. After a time with a male sex worker, a client will change to another and cut any ties with the previous one.

“So, a female client sometimes invites her sex worker and many of his colleagues to attend a party at her home. She then keeps contacts for all of us. Our contacts may also be given to her female friends,” H admitted.

“We men are not jealous at all. I may also whisper her tastes and habits to my friends to better please her,” H confided.

Not only elderly women, but several young girls in their 20s also come to male brothels, an owner of a brothel in the city revealed.

Receiving men

The appearance of a male prostitute, with an attractive face and well-built stature, does matter to a female client, but it means almost nothing to a male client, H said, adding that male clients rarely select male prostitutes as long as their sexual desires are met.

Another male sex worker named G said about one of his male clients, “The client resides in District 10, and has a wife and a son.”

“He often takes me home and introduces me to his wife as his twin brother,” G revealed.

The client calls G once a week at a certain hotel, G added.

Many male sex workers are good-looking students at art schools in Ho Chi Minh City. They decide to go into this line of work to make money for clothes and school supplies, as the costs of attending an art school are often high.

“My family cannot afford this art college, so I have to take care of myself. I feel ashamed to see my friends in good clothes and driving nice vehicles that I don’t have,” said a student named P, who works at night for a male brothel in District 3.

“I only receive rich clients who are business people or overseas Vietnamese to get around a million dong per 30 minute session,” P said.

“Some men like me, ask me to come to their houses for parties, and give expensive gifts such as motorbike and clothes, and even book tours to travel with me.”

‘Occupational hazards’ of male prostitutes

Not only do they face the risks of sexually transmitted diseases, rape, sadism, and being cheated out of money, but male sex workers may also have to pay for breaking or damaging the silicone-stuffed organs of clients during sex.

Every male prostitute Tuoi Tre contacted for this story admitted that they had been physically abused at least once by a client. They added that some of them have odd sexual habits.

Problems with clients

Most of the female clients who visit male sex workers are wealthy and in their 40s, and most have had cosmetic operations on their breasts, lips, nose, hip, and bottom.

“So, serving them requires a lot of care, time and labor. If you are accidentally heavy-handed with them and leave the silicon-stuffed organs misshapen, you will not be paid for the session and may be forced to compensate them for the damage,” said a male sex worker named Nguyen Van Y, who works in Binh Tan District in Ho Chi Minh City.

“Damaging a breast may cost at least VND15 million [US$721],” said Y.

Another male prostitute named H admitted that he fears receiving women for many reasons.

“They ask for more time, require more labor, and the risks are higher if the client has had their body ‘upgraded’ through surgeries,” H confessed.

Some female clients even physically abuse their sex workers thanks to their heavy weight and stronger sexual desire.

“Once I had a client who is over 70kg (155 pounds). She jumped on top of me, pressed down and bit me. I almost stopped breathing then,” H told Tuoi Tre.

Accepting male clients can bring other risks, as they tend to be sadistic or masochisist, deriving sexual pleasure from inflicting pain, suffering, or humiliation on others.

H recalled one session when he was with a male client who was almost 60.

“He offered to bind my hands and legs before having sex. I refused but he kept on scratching and biting me. It only stopped after I threatened to leave him,” H said.

Cheated out of money

A male sex worker named C said he has been cheated out of money several times.

“One time a client called me to a hotel and gave me a glass of water. I then passed out for hours since it was drugged. My money and personal papers were taken away,” C said.

Most male prostitutes admitted that clients referred to them from Internet contacts are more risky than regular clients or those recommended by an acquaintance.

A sex worker in Hanoi shared his story of the risks associated with the job.

“A client contacted me on the Internet and offered to take me on a tour to Ha Long Bay. A while after entering his house, I realized that I had to receive three clients, even though I had been informed of only one.

“The door was locked and I couldn’t resist. I was forced to please them.

“After that, I was bleeding a lot and paid for nothing. I felt like I was being raped,” he said.

Infectious diseases

Nguyen H.N, 28, from An Giang Province in the Mekong Delta, may be a special case of male prostitution. The handsome young man once worked for a travel company in Ho Chi Minh City.

During a tour in Nha Trang, a male tourist in his group asked if N would have sex with him for US$100 a session.

After that, he began ‘traveling’ into this new world for a period before officially resigning from his travel job to work as a sex worker for more money.

“Many male and female clients have persuaded me not to use a condom. I only agree to this with regular clients who pay well. After catching gonorrhea for a week, I have become more careful now,” H said.

Besides sexually transmitted diseases, most male sex workers have to take aphrodisiacs to be able to receive clients. On average, a male prostitute has sex 40 times a month.

“Without an aphrodisiac, the ‘machine’ is unable to operate,” a male sex worker admitted. “I have to use them even though I have been warned many times of the risks of the medicine.”

Peer education a safety net for sex workers
================================================== =======

Peer education workers are former sex workers who gave up their job to try to renew their life.

Thanks to easy access as ‘peers’ of prostitutes, these trained workers persuade them to give up the job, or give them information on health care and prevention of infectious diseases.

The peers also act as a link to connect prostitutes who are inclined to lead a cynical and self-contained life with the community.

Peers do not work individually, but attend regular training classes held by local authorities, and they prove their worth.

Peers do not approach sex workers with condescending claims like depravity or laziness, they simply listen to prostitutes with their mind and hearts and give them pragmatic advice to defend themselves from sinking further and follow healthcare standards such as using condoms.

An expert admitted that without these peers, sex workers would be more exposed to occupational hazards, and the rate of infectious diseases and HIV/AIDS in Vietnam would worsen.

A peer worker named B, who worked as a xe om (motorbike taxi) for sex workers in Hanoi, told Tuoi Tre he works not only with prostitutes but also meets local and foreign researchers and international delegations to learn about prostitution and drug use in his area.

“Whatever the reason you do this work, prostitution has existed for a long time because it helps satisfy the sexual desires of single or widowed people,” B recalled a client saying.

“Some may disagree that they enter prostitution to make money because many others living under poverty find a legal job to earn their living, but not prostitute themselves,” he added.

“So my job is not to blame them, but to show them the way to become better and better and one day he/she may give it up like me,” B confided.

B said he knows prostitution in Hanoi like the back of his hand.

“Where this man or that woman prostitutes themselves, how long did they work as a sex worker, if anyone has died or caught infectious diseases… I know them all.

“I just wish to extend my experience and knowledge to help reduce the risks for both the prostitutes and people in the community,” B said.

B is paid a monthly salary of less than 1 million dong (US$48), but it is a lawful and stable income, he admitted, adding that he has the chance to learn, attend conferences, and live in a friendly working environment.

A peer also distributes coupons to prostitutes to remind them to get a health check every three months.

Another peer in Ho Chi Minh City, named V, admitted to Tuoi Tre that he experienced a lot during his days of prostitution.

“I was sexually abused by clients, bilked out of money, and verbally assaulted. I witnessed my friends suffering terribly after catching diseases,” V said. “One day, I joined a training class held by some peers and now I work to help others.”

When a prostitute is about to run out of condoms, the peers immediately bring new batches to distribute them for free.

“In case they don’t have it and catch diseases, it is a pity for them,” a peer named T said.

Vietnam ladies’ dens for foreigners in the city
================================================== ========================

Pretty young girls, mainly around 19-20 years old, play the role of hosts at the restaurants. They are hired to receive foreign men in secluded rooms for karaoke singing and then join the men in their homes after 23:30pm.

Many of the girls are college students attracted by copious tips from their night-shift labor: VND300,000 – 400,000 (US$14-19) for sitting with a male expat for one or two hours, and another $100-400 for spending a night, starting from 23:30pm.

The restaurants cluster themselves in districts 1 and 3 in the center of the city, with guests mainly coming from South Korea, China, Japan and Singapore. There, girls are called ‘lady,’ and are actually treated like no more than prostitutes, the only difference being price.

Tuoi Tre journalists disguised themselves as ladies of some of the ‘dens’ for three months and sketched out the ambience of entertainment that ‘elegant girls’ and ‘successful businessmen’ build up.

Around 50 such ‘dens’ exist on streets such as Ngo Van Nam, Pham Ngu Lao, Pham Ngoc Thach, Nguyen Thai Binh, Chu Manh Trinh and Bui Vien in the center of the city, which is the busiest economic hub of Vietnam.

Specialty

At 8pm -- or just three hours after the closing time of most offices, Jee Bar in the area called Westerners’ Town on Pham Ngu Lao Street becomes busy with the appearance of foreign men.

The whirr of the outlets of air conditioners adjusted at maximum blowing capacity seems not enough to cool down the atmosphere in the lounge. A 20 square meter room in the corner became cramped with 30 ‘ladies’ who are ‘staff of entertainment,’ waiting for their turns to go out to ‘greet’ customers.

These young ladies were dressed in skirts that exposed more flesh than cloth and were busy making up eyes and cheeks and lips -- ingredients of their night recipe to earn money.

Suddenly, a temperate voice of a woman spoke up through a handie-talkie: “Girls come out for greeting, girls come out for greeting”. The sentence or command was repeated twice, meaning new male customers were waiting.

“Those who can go with guests queue up on the right, those who can’t on the left,” Mrs. Hoang, manager of the restaurant, told the girls.

Upon seeing a girl who is a reporter disguised as a new comer standing embarrassed and confused while all the others, except two, move to the right side, Hoang gently asked, “Babysan, can you new comer go with guests?”

Another lady standing by her side nudged the new comer, explaining, “Going with guests means sleeping with them. It’s to meet all their desires.”

With Hoang waving them out, the girls stand in queue and enter a secluded room with several Taiwanese men, all saying ‘Hello’ in Vietnamese and Chinese and making big bows in front of the men to wait for their picking.

The men laughed, one of them stood up and spoke Vietnamese in a slight accent, “Nice, nice.” He gradually approached each girl and gazed at them carefully. He then put his hand into the bra of a girl and asked Hoang something in Chinese.

Hoang turned back to the girl, “He asks if you can go with him to a hotel after the party?” After receiving a nod, the man held her hand and took her to sit on the sofa by his side. Other men were also sitting on it and deciding who to pick for each of them.

Those who were not selected left the room and waited for another turn.

Usually, the girls who are in good shape with developed breasts and hips are the favorite, a girl said.

Now, the most popular restaurant in the city is Migi, on Pham Ngoc Thach Street in District 3, which is well equipped with ten secluded rooms and 70 regular ladies.

All of them are conversational in Chinese, Korean and English, and most of them are willing to spend the night at home with guests or in hotels, except for those in ‘technical period’.

Procedures

If they want to take home a lady, a guest has to ‘book’ and pay the manager in advance, and their ladies will only leave for the rendezvous at 23:30 -- the closing time of the restaurant.

Apart from the tip of $14-19 for around an hour in the restaurant, a lady is paid $100-400 for a night. Usually, a party of 4-5 men with their girls at a restaurant spends $400-3,000.

Le Hong Lien, a lady at a bar in District 1, admitted that her job is nothing more than a ‘bia om’ girl, who drinks beer and then spends the night with men, generally prostitution.

The advantages of working there are earning good money, enjoying amenities, and freedome to catch up with local friends and relatives.

It’s easier to avoid the police in this job, as guests usually take the girls home, not to hotels, she added. The other thing is that foreigners rarely force them to over-drink, as locals do, although sex is desired by men universally.

Ladies who are introduced as students are also preferred, said a lady named Le, who introduced herself a student of the tourism department of a university.

At Migi, most ladies are introduced as students, who are priced from $100-150 for an hour in a hotel.

Duy, a manager of a restaurant on Ngo Van Nam Street, said his business has made a huge profit. Each party gives him a net profit of $200 – 1,000, as girls are not paid salary and their total income comes from tips and overnight labor.

Each night, a girl receives 3-4 parties before leaving for their rendezvous until the following day.
