Wow ...... long time no see u, u become clever liao.. must be drinking a lot of vinamilk at home and increased brain power.

No lah...Long time no drink vinamilk roi. Been drinking melamine milk...:p

'Lim Bu' si boh?? hahaha you one hell of a freaking funny la bro.....hahahahaha.

well, once you get the hang of msging vn msgs, you will actully prefer the short form la....very convenient lei.....hahaha....dun worry, with practice you will get there!!

I'm already used to super short SMSes liao...Hahaha ^_^

i'm using talk-a-thon $10 value card 100mins. is this the most value for money calling card?

Thats what i m using now. if u use house phone to call her, u can talk for 130min. if u use the callback function, then its 100min.

Just bought this card...Keeping track of the minutes usage for it now. Wanna see whether it's really 130mins.

eeerrrr.....I beg to differ....I find that HCMC girls are more "accomodating" and "understanding" compared to Hanoi girls...At least through my own experiences as well as friends telling me stories...

My ex (from Bien Hoa) too is accommodating enough to let me "poke" other gals when she's not around, provided I take precaution...But I must engage RAW with her...:cool:

I also havent try the pho from hanoi yet, their language v hard to understand, if they say in saigon slang, i maybe understand 50%, if they speak hanoi slang, i understand 25%...vietnamese language v hard to learn

Have "nuoc mieng", will travel...;)

Hahahaha......very funny. Now you seem to be very free liao hor....how is the Viet course with Moon crackers??

Ended last month...Past the exam with flying colours...Hehe. :)

Initially u can call 130min, but each time u call there is a connection fee of 20cents, this will misues off from the 130min, 20cents == approx 3min, so if u call 1 time, u call call 127min. if u call many times, then BO HUA :D

Just bought this card...Keeping track of the minutes usage for it now. Wanna see whether it's really 130mins.

Really envy of u!!! maybe i will apply for this VISA.

ya notice that too. the 3mins deduction or 20cents connection fee really make alot of diff if u call for 10 mins 20 mins. but its hard to talk like 127min at one go. only manage to do it once but still feels quite ex. 1 day $8 times 20days $160 if she go back for 2mths $320. still cheaper than taking a plane there and who know kena carrot. :(

thoi = thi thoi = fine, ok, alright, nevermind (just my guess as i receive sms in this way also)
de = just an espression
ngay khat = some other day
cung duoc = also can
mat = ?????
di = go
an = eat
sinh nhat = birthday
voi = with
chi = sister
roi = already
hon = kiss
nhieu = many

so roughly it means
its alright, some other day also can. I go birthday dinner with sister already. kiss you many.

Good explaination!!!

My rough guess also 99% same as yours:

Fine, other day also can. I am going to celebrate birthday of my sister already. Kiss u alot....

She wrote wrongly for the word "other day", it shd be "ngày khác".

thoi = thi thoi = fine, ok, alright, nevermind (just my guess as i receive sms in this way also)
de = just an espression
ngay khat = some other day
cung duoc = also can
mat = ?????
di = go
an = eat
sinh nhat = birthday
voi = with
chi = sister
roi = already
hon = kiss
nhieu = many

so roughly it means
its alright, some other day also can. I go birthday dinner with sister already. kiss you many.

Maybe I shouldnt use the word grammer. But rather "sentence construction" ???

Kg Dc Ngu = I have to finish my work. So I cannot sleep yet.

Kg Ngu Dc = For watever reason, i am suffering from insomnia. I have difficulty in sleeping..

the above was explained to long time ago by a language teacher in VN. As long the other party understands what you are trying to say, thats the important thing.

Understanding the language of self-respect
=============================
Come holiday season and I receive plenty of congratulatory cards – written only in English – from companies, organizations and businesses.

No Vietnamese, only English.

Then it happens again with invitation cards to press conferences, opening ceremonies and formal parties.

Yet again, I confront this phenomenon as I visit several restaurants and hotels to find menus and descriptions written only in English.

But wait. Some cards do contain Vietnamese, but so often it’s written in small letters and put in a very modest, unassuming spot.

What does this mean? That the organizers of the events feel embarrassed using Vietnamese?

For those who subscribe to Viettel land phones, it might be frustrating to hear the “not so fluent” English speaking voices announcing the reasons why the users’ phones were cut.

The story is the same with the dong, our national currency. Visit some language centers and international schools, clothing stores, or souvenir shops. The owners post prices only in US dollars.

I’ve been to some duty-free shops in some countries and find that they only accept payment in their own currency. In Vietnam, some duty-free shops even ask that customers must pay them in American dollars.

Here’s the lesson: if we don’t respect our national language, who else will? Some Vietnamese even find that it’s an honor to receive messages and cards in English.

Throughout our history, Vietnam has always been able to keep its own, distinctive culture and there’s no reason why we should not be proud of using our national language.

I am not saying that a card written in English would lead to losing the authenticity of this country.

But just think: if even the educated class of this country feels “more honored” using English, what can we ask from those girls who line up hoping to get married to foreigners?

It’s a matter of self-respect.

Geography lesson again :D:p;)

Bac Lieu (in Vietnamese, Bạc Liêu; Hán tự: 薄遼[citation needed]) is a Province of Vietnam. It is a coastal province, and is situated in the Mekong Delta region of the southern part of the country.

Administration
Bạc Liêu is divided into six districts:

Dong Hai
Giá Rai
Hòa Binh
Hồng Dân
Phước Long
Vinh Loi
The provincial capital, which is also known as Bạc Liêu, is a separate municipality.

Geography
Bạc Liêu is generally thought of as being in the Mekong Delta, although it is actually located slightly to the south of the Mekong's main outflows. Bạc Liêu is around 100km south of Cần Thơ, the largest city in the Mekong Delta.

Economy
The most important parts of Bạc Liêu's economy are rice farming, fishing, food processing, and clothing manufacturing.

History
Until 1996, the area that now makes up Bạc Liêu Province was part of a larger unit, Minh Hai Province. Although it is located in Vietnam, many years ago this land was a part of the Khmer Empire which ruled most of Indochina many centuries ago. It is still home to many ethnic Khmer people. In 1996, Minh Hai was split into two, with the northeast becoming Bạc Liêu Province and the southwest becoming Cà Mau Province.

Ben Tre (in Vietnamese, Bến Tre) is a Province of Vietnam. It is one of the country's southern provinces, being situated in the delta of the Mekong River.

Administration
Politically, Bến Tre is divided into seven districts:

Ba Tri
Bình Đại
Châu Thành
Chợ Lách
Giồng Trôm
Mỏ Cày
Thạnh Phú
The provincial capital, also known as Bến Tre, is a separate municipality.

Geography

Ben Tre countryside around Cái MonGeographically, Bến Tre is wedged between the two main branches of the Tiền Giang River, which is itself one of the two main branches of the Mekong. The province's northern boundary is formed by the Tiền Giang's main course, while the province's southern boundary is formed by the Tiền Giang's largest branch (which breaks away from the Tiền Giang just upriver from Bến Tre province). Between the Tiền Giang and its main branch are two smaller branches, passing through the middle of Bến Tre. The entire province is criss-crossed with a network of smaller rivers and canals. The extensive irrigation that this provides makes Bến Tre a major producer of rice, but also means that the area is prone to flooding. Bến Tre province is, on average, only 1.25 metres above sea level.

Transportation
At present, there are no bridges connecting Bến Tre province to the rest of Vietnam - access is only possible by ferries. In 2002, however, work started on the Rach Mieu Bridge, which will link Bến Tre to its northern neighbour, Tiền Giang province. The bridge is expected to be completed in 2008.

Cà Mau pronunciation (help·info) is a province of Vietnam, named after its capital city. It is located in the Mekong Delta of southern Vietnam, and is the southernmost of Vietnam's 59 provinces. It is bordered on the north by the Kien Giang and Bac Lieu provinces, on the west by the Gulf of Thailand, and on the south and east by the South China Sea (often referred to as the "East Sea".)

Economy
Being surrounded by sea on three sides, fishing is an important industry in Cà Mau province. An extensive network of canals also supports a strong agricultural sector, as well as providing a popular means of transport. The U Minh biosphere reserve and Mũi Cà Mau, the southernmost point of Vietnam, serve also as important tourism destinations. The Mui Ca Mau National Park is located at Mũi Cà Mau.

Administration

Vietnam house approves dual citizenship for expats, diaspora

Foreigners and overseas Vietnamese will be allowed to hold dual citizenship under the amended Nationality Law that the National Assembly (NA) passed on Thursday.

The law eases citizenship restrictions on foreigners and overseas Vietnamese.

Under the Nationality Law that came into force in 1998, dual citizenship was banned, so people taking out Vietnamese citizenship had to relinquish their original nationality.

Under the amended law, foreigners eligible to take out Vietnamese citizenship and retain their origin nationalities would include those who:

- marry Vietnamese citizens or have Vietnamese parents or children;

- receive certificates or medals of merit from the State or the Government for their contribution to the country; and

- those whose citizenship would benefit Vietnam’s socio-economic development, science, national security or defense.

These categories of foreigners would be exempted from some Vietnamese citizenship criteria, such as being able to speak Vietnamese and residing in the country for at least five years.

The amended law, set to take effect on July 1 next year, also permits foreigners of unclear nationality to apply for Vietnamese citizenship three years after the new law takes effect.

The timeframe for processing Vietnamese nationality applications would also be reduced to nine months from the current 12 months, according to the amended law.

The government will issue further decrees with instructions on implementing the law.

Diaspora to benefit

Overseas Vietnamese will also be allowed to hold dual citizenship under the amended law.

Earlier, citizens automatically lost their Vietnamese citizenship once they received nationality in another country.

The amended law states overseas Vietnamese whose nationalities have not yet been revoked or lost would be deemed to be Vietnamese citizens. They would be able to apply for citizenship of the countries in which they reside without having to relinquish their Vietnamese citizenship.

Those who apply to regain Vietnamese nationality can retain their foreign citizenship if they have just cause and get permission from the state president, the Vietnam News Agency reports.

The amended law also stipulates that those who regain their Vietnamese nationality are "assured of all rights of citizenship and must obey all citizens' duties toward the state and society according to its laws," suggesting those who regain their Vietnamese nationality will enjoy full rights, such as being able to buy property, but may also be subject to obligations such as military service for males.

The law also says that children born overseas to at least one Vietnamese parent will be able to claim Vietnamese citizenship.

Around three million Vietnamese now live abroad, mostly in the US, Europe, Canada and Australia.

New liquor taxes

The NA also passed changes to many laws.

Under the amended Special Consumption Tax Law, import duties on wine and other beverages with alcohol content of more than 20 percent will be taxed 45 percent beginning 2010 and 50 percent from 2013 onwards. Liquor with alcohol content of less than 20 percent will be subjected to a tax of 25 percent against the current 20 percent.

The import tax on all kinds of beer will also see an increase to 45 percent in the 2010-2012 period, and up to 50 percent starting in 2013, from the current 40 percent.

Cars having less than nine seats will be subjected to different tax rates ranging from 45 percent to 60 percent depending on their engine capacities.

All cars having 10 to 16 seats will be taxed 30 percent, the law stipulates.

Two and three-wheel motorbikes with the engine capacities of more than 125cc will attract a tax of 20 percent.

A 10-percent tax will be levied on air-conditioners with up to 90,000 BTU (British thermal unit) capacity.

Karaoke and golf services will be taxed 30 percent and 20 percent respectively.

Aircraft and yachts will attract a tax rate of 30 percent.

I notice that some of you may have translated some words wrongly. Ok, let me correct some of these words.

Q: toi hieu me ban lo lang cho ban. va toi se kg jan ban va ghet ban. nhung toi se kg tin ban. toi mon se duoc vui va hanh phuc.
A: I understand that your mother worry for you and I will not be angry with you and hate you. But I will not believe you. I want to be happy and have happiness.

Someone mentioned that lo lang means to take care. That is incorrect. Take care will be 'cham soc'. Lo lang means worry.

Q: em nhan gi vay?
A: I receive what?

Okay, this is confirmed correct: "Em nhan gi vay" = What did you sms to me?
This is not really right in the sense but almost. nhan means to receive. For exact correct of writing English, it should be translated as 'What did I receive?'

Let me give you an example. 'nhan tin nhan' means 'to receive message / sms'.

Please understand that it is normal for some vietnamese people to write short forms of words such as ko / kg (khong), dt (dien thoai), etc.

I have been learning Vietnamese for 4.5 years already. But even at this moment, I do not proclaim to say that my Vietnamese is good yet. I have mixture of Hanoian and Saigonese friends so I am able to understand them most of times in spite of Vietnamese dialects. I will try my best to help you all translate any words when I have free time to log to this website.

Correct word for 'sung' is 'suong'. Can also use 'bi kich duc' which means horny.

Hi, i have checked in dict and the meaning of nhan is of below:

nhắn
Send a message to, send word to
E.g: Nhắn bạn đến chơi: To send one's friend a message to come and see one

So for the enquiry statement "em nhan gi vay", a more appropriate translation is "What u send to me"....

"What did I receive" sounds a bit funny....

Thats my personal view, dun mean to "challenge" you.... ;)

horny
====

*cứng như sừng, thành chai
horny hand: tay chai cứng như sừng

em oi, anh sung qua. anh thich em bu cu. em lai di.

Since 2004, I chatted online with many and many Vietnamese women and men in Yahoo Messenger. Even now, my contact list totalled to about 150 in my Yahoo Messenger. That is how my Vietnamese language improves. My weakness is that I cannot write with Latin characters. It is not easy to remember how to write Latin characters as you need to remember a lot of times.

an evil idea just came to me!!!!!!!

haha maybe we can snook them back....

we use alphanumeric msging on them....hahahahaha

E.g

68, 60121314

Lau po, lau gong ai ni yi sheng yi shi

68, 60 177155 17

lau po, lau gong miss you (notice how 177 forms 'M') and (notice how 17 forms 'U' when inverted...)

these are the tricks of the olds days where no handphone and only pagers with numbers display..haha

this should make them very confused....like how they use their rojak stuns on us....

:p:p:p

Yeah, actually msg is meant for only those who understood them...:)

KangTuo

If i am not wrong, 60 stands for "Lau Gong" or hubby(we always use this in the days of alphanumeric pager days!!! where 60= lau gong and 68= lau po).....try fitting it into the sentence ...i think it makes sense...

Confirmed. You are indeed correct. 60 is ong xa and 68 is ba xa.
Once I reply her by writing 68 oi,........... than i ask her is she knows what is 68.

Police arrest thieves targeting dating couples
=============================
Police in central Da Nang City Monday arrested two members of a gang accused of robbing lovers who rendezvous on streets that are popular spots for such meetings.

They are also looking for two other members of the gang that robbed a couple on Nguyen Tat Thanh Street on Sunday.

Do Doi, 30, and Nguyen Kim Dung, 18, both of Phu Loc District in nearby Thua Thien–Hue Province, were nabbed by police as they rode their motorbike at around 2:30 a.m. Monday in Da Nang’s Lien Chieu District.

Police found some money and some papers of the victims including identity cards, motorbike riding licenses and ATM cards.

Doi and Dung confessed they had tied up the victims, robbed them of their possessions including a motorbike, and left them in a nearby forest.

Police said the victims, identified only as T.M.Q. and T.T.H., reported they were parking their motorbike on Nguyen Tat Thanh Street when four masked men riding on a motorbike robbed them.

They had tied the two victims and taken them to Hai Van Pass before taking their property and leaving them behind, police said.

Police said the two victims then untied themselves and stopped a passing truck to ask for help.

Earlier, the city’s police arrested Tran Kieu Khanh and Truong Van An, accused of robbing another couple on the same street.

Police said Khanh, An and another suspect on October 13 had stabbed the man before taking a motorcycle, a cell phone and a wallet.

Fortunately, the victim survived after being rushed to a nearby hospital, police said.

The chief of the 113 police division that made the arrests, Ngo Thanh Hai, warned that the popularity of Nguyen Tat Thanh Street as a lovers’ meeting place had seen thieves target the couples there more frequently.

Vietnamese Embassy ponders stance on matchmaking uproar
========================================

A representative of the Vietnamese Embassy in Singapore has told Thanh Nien the embassy “is contemplating appropriate actions” in light of a recent newspaper article about a Vietnamese bride matchmaking service.

“We must look at the issue from multiple perspectives to respond in a correct way,” said Bui Tan Long, the first secretary in charge of community affairs at the embassy.

In its October 24th edition, the Singapore’s newspaper Straits Times ran an article about Vietnam Brides International Matchmaker Company charging half-price for Singaporean men seeking Vietnamese spouses.

The story with the headline “Vietnam brides: Agency slashes fees” has sparked criticisms from readers as well as Ton Nu Thi Ninh, the former deputy head of the National Assembly Foreign Affairs Committee.

Readers say by stressing the price cut in the headline, the article was – whether inadvertently or not – advertising for overseas matchmaking services, which some view as another form of human trafficking.

Ninh, also a former Vietnamese Ambassador to the EU, suggests the Vietnamese Embassy in Singapore should at least request the host country to use appropriate authority to remove “Vietnam Brides” from the company’s name as it is an insult to Vietnam.

However, Long said the name can potentially be justified as it describes the function of the company.

For instance, he said, it is acceptable for an export/import service company from Thailand that does business with only Vietnam to use the name ‘Viet Thai’ to promote its brand. “In this case, this company… [is only describing] its matchmaking services with Vietnamese women.”

But Long also said the embassy may follow Ninh’s suggestion or even take a stronger response after careful deliberations.

Help or dun help the gal, you decide....

At the end of the day, you have to be clear on where you stand on your relationship with her...if she means a lot to you and you are willing to help, by all means...no matter what you are doing it for..it could be for sex, true love or whatever you get in return...as to how much she means to you, only you will know...

So long as you feel that what you are willing to help and you feel that its in your interests to help, then be prepared to face whatever that comes along with it...good or bad...., you face the consequences(good/bad) on your own. If its good then i say congrats, if its bad, then congrats as well, cos you would have learnt another valuable lesson in life...

Work to start on modern medical zone in HCMC
==============================
A Vietnamese-Singaporean joint venture will start work in Ho Chi Minh City this Thursday on what it says will be one of the most technologically advanced medical zones in Southeast Asia.

The 37-hectare zone, located in Binh Tan District, will include a 1,750 bed hospital, a medical school, a laboratory, a research center and an office building, a retail center for medical devices, a 36-floor residential building for medical experts and a 25-floor building for relatives of patients.

In addition, the zone will include a health club, a three-star hotel, a conference center, a park and an international primary school.

The first stage of the project, worth a total investment of US$400 million excluding medical equipment, will come online in 2011, according to project investors Hoa Lam Services Co. and Singapore-based Shangri-La Health Care Investment Pte. Ltd.

Story on Vietnamese bride service draws criticism
================================

A Straits Times story on a Vietnamese bride service in Singapore has drawn criticism from a Vietnamese diplomat and international journalists for treating the issue with indifference and even encouraging the practice.

An October 24 Straits Times article with the headline “Vietnam brides: Agency slashes fees” reported that the Vietnam Brides International Matchmaker company was charging half-price for Singaporean men seeking Vietnamese spouses, attributing the discount to the global financial crisis.

According to the story, Mark Lin of Vietnam Brides International Matchmaker was charging SG$4,000 to fix up potential Singaporean husbands with potential Vietnamese brides.

Three Vietnamese women had been hanging around at the agency for weeks waiting for husbands, the article said. “Business has never been so bad - not even during the SARS outbreak in 2003,” the article quoted Lin as saying.

Many readers say that by not criticizing the practice of overseas matchmaking, which many see as akin to human trafficking, the article had in fact condoned it.

Many have said that by using the price cut as the headline, the article was serving as advertising for the business.

A journalist from a leading international news agency recently wrote to Thanh Nien: “It's horrible to see them [Vietnamese would-be brides] ‘discounted’ like they are a sack of rice or a pair of shoes.”

“Unfortunately, money talks loudly and overrides social and moral considerations. Since I really love the Vietnamese people, it hurt me to see the article,” the journalist said.

“I felt bad for the women they featured. I guess there must be mixed feelings in Vietnam about this issue, on one hand, I would like to think that some of the ladies find love and a better life in Singapore, but I know Vietnamese are a very proud culture (and have many good reasons to be proud).”

Speaking with a Thanh Nien correspondent on a recent Singapore trip, former deputy head of the parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee Ton Nu Thi Ninh said she was stunned to see such a respected newspaper running a very insensitive story on a very sensitive topic.

Ninh said that even though transnational marriage brokerage services between Singaporean men and foreign women were legal in Singapore, she said the practice “sold” women into marriage.

In Vietnam, individuals and organizations are forbidden to carry out marriage brokerages.

Though only non-profit women’s associations can establish marriage support centers and marriage consultation services, the Vietnamese Ministry of Justice has recommended that the government legalize marriage brokering so central authorities could oversee and control the matchmaking.

Ninh said the article had simply cashed in on gullible women, especially the three mentioned in the article, who were all pictured without their faces blurred.

Such articles in Vietnam always blur the women’s faces.

The Straits Times’ reporter Theresa Tan, who wrote the article, said in an email to Thanh Nien that she did indeed consider the fact that Singaporean men pay a marriage broker to find Vietnamese brides a social problem.

“That's why we report on such issues,” she said.

She said the paper was under no obligation to change the names or blur the faces of the girls involved as they had all agreed to the article.

The Vietnamese government is now considering proposals to clamp down on illegal marriage brokering after several high-profile cases this year and last.

Authorities are also considering revising Vietnam’s laws on marrying foreigners.

The Straits Times is a Singapore-based daily newspaper.

Vietnamese coffee needs a brand new perception
===============================
To many people, including expatriates, Vietnamese coffee tastes the best. But ask someone outside the country about Vietnamese coffee and you will receive a shrug. Give me a brand name, she or he are likely to ask.

So there’s the moment of truth. Few local coffee brands are known outside the country, although Vietnam is known as a major exporter of coffee beans.

Some good news came last week. Trung Nguyen, a famous Vietnamese coffee brand, has just added another outlet in Singapore. Its second coffee shop is located in the famous Liang Court shopping mall. The first shop, by the way, is in the Changi Airport.
Founder and General Director of Trung Nguyen, Dang Le Nguyen Vu, says the firm plans to open two more shops in Singapore in next year’s first quarter, one in the Marina Square shopping mall and the other at Changi Airport’s second terminal. The long term plan? Eighteen shops in the lion city, Vu says.

Given the low quality profile of Vietnam’s processed coffee products, Vu’s plan may sound far-fetched. But he believes Vietnamese coffee has its “unique quality and characteristics” that outshines some other famous international brands, thanks partly to the mineral-rich basalt soil of the Central Highlands, the nation’s premier coffee growing region.

He may be right. The new Trung Nguyen outlet has attracted many shoppers even though it officially opened only on Wednesday.

But Trung Nguyen alone is not enough to change the perception of Vietnam as just an exporter of raw coffee beans.

“Very few domestically processed coffee products are exported,” says Luong Van Tu, chairman of Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (VICOFA).

In fact, Vietnam imports coffee products – US$7.3 million worth of it in the first eight months, according to the General Customs Office.

There is plenty of evidence that the reliance on coffee bean exports has made Vietnamese farmers and traders very vulnerable to world price fluctuations.

The plans seem to be in place. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has said processed coffee production should go up to 15,000 tons a year by 2015, about half of which will be exported.

For this to happen, the local coffee industry must focus on improving its processing capacity and bring more variety to its coffee products. And lest we forget, work toward creating a few recognized brands.

I think a bit wrong:
can than = careful

I thought careful is giu gin?

Anyway i was not sure too....but i got this from vdict...i also think maybe the sentence structure a bit wrong....here's what i found:

sự chăm chú, sự chú ý; sự cẩn thận, sự thận trọng

to give care to one's work
chú ý đến công việc

to take care not to...
cẩn thận đừng có..., cố giữ đừng để...

to do something with... care
làm việc gì cẩn thận

to take care; to have a care
cẩn thận coi chừng

extracted from: Definition of `care` in English - Vietnamese dictionary (http://vdict.com/care,1,0,0.html)

so actually i deduce that take care = can than

lets look at careful.......

cẩn thận, thận trọng, biết giữ gìn, biết lưu ý

be careful of your health
hãy giữ gìn sức khoẻ của anh

be careful how you speak
hãy giữ gìn lời nói, hãy thận trọng lời nói

kỹ lưỡng, chu đáo

a careful piece of work
một công việc làm kỹ lưỡng

a careful examination of the question
sự xem xét kỹ lưỡng vấn đề

yap careful also have can than....but looking at the sentences i think in bro zhu star case, can than seems the better choice....

what do you reckon bro jackbl???

Em ve nha roi thi nt cho a, dung quen nhe
this part absolutely correct...this is another way of putting it...the more informal and street style way which i normally use too:p

em nho giu gin suc khoe.
ermmm, this i think is to take care of your health lei:confused:.....not sure if bro zhu star means this cos he din say....i was thinking he was referring to take care in general ....hence i lifted the translation of 'to take care' from Vdict....:

be careful of your health
hãy giữ gìn sức khoẻ của anh

to take care; to have a care
cẩn thận coi chừng

problem with the site is they dun translate some short forms or the colloquial usage...they still more to the formal usage..thas why sometimes you cannot find what you want..also we dun have the symbols when gals msg u so we will find transating using vdict quite tedious....

just use the language more and you will learn some new words everyday...;)

Comfortable and friendly Phan Thiet is always welcoming.

A coastal town more than 200 kilometers north of Ho Chi Minh City, Phan Thiet in central Binh Thuan Province has many things to attract tourists.

Ca Ty River is an original attraction of Phan Thiet. On important occasions the river crossed by bridges connecting two quarters of the town has boat races and floating lanterns. Visitors can enjoy the view or go boating to see fishermen trade their catches on the riverbanks.

Another popular spot for sight seers on the river is the giant water tower, the symbol of Phan Thiet. The tower, called “Château d’eau” in French, was designed by the ruler of Laos, King Souphanouvong (1909-1995), who was also an architect, and built between 1928 and 1934. The 32-meter tall structure has the acronym U.E.PT (Unise Des Eaux de Phan Thiet) which means it was assembled from broken porcelain bowls.

Phan Thiet’s other well-known tourist sites include the sand hill and Rom Islet at Ne Cape. At the foot of the hill, local children rent out plastic boards for tourists to slide down the dunes on. The beautiful dunes change shape constantly.

Its clean beaches, make Rom Islet good for swimming. In summer, it becomes a golden field when the grass turns dry.

Stopping at any small restaurant on the old streets of Phan Thiet, visitors can find local specialty pancakes and snail salads. The pancakes are made from rice flower, and accompanied with boiled duck eggs or fish cooked in fish sauce, and vegetables.

Visitors to Phan Thiet will want to return again and again. Locals are friendly and helpful. Prices are relatively stable, so tourists don’t have to worry about being overcharged or bargaining.

Make sure you buy fish sauce made from anchovies, dragon fruits, and sun-dried fish before you leave.

Life is hard as a student in VN.... :(

Life in ‘the tunnels’
================

Dozens of homeowners in Da Lat are taking advantage of an influx of college students by transforming their small basements into boarding houses, some of which contain up to 20 rooms.

Da Lat, known as Vietnam’s premier mountain resort town, has always had an excess of basements as houses on hilly streets often have more space than they need.

But instead of using their basements to store furniture or brew liquor as they had in the past, residents are using the space to accommodate students and breed squalor.

Da Lat University student Khanh rents a dungeon-like underground boarding room at 69A Nguyen Cong Tru Street.

The narrow steps down to the “boarding house” look like the steps to a bomb shelter. Only one person can pass at a time. The air is cold and humid and the stairwell is pitch-black.

A tiny beam of sunlight creeps into the room from a small window. The air is musty and thick. When all the boarders are home, there’s little room to move around.

These “tunnels,” as the students call them, are common on Nguyen Cong Tru and Phu Dong Thien Vuong streets.

Students who live in these small holes may pay cheap monthly rent - VND500,000 or US$30, split among all boarders. But they have to spend more money on electricity because they use it 24 hours a day.

When electricity is cut, cell phones are their only sources of light, even during the day.

It takes a whole week for their laundry to dry enough for them to wear their clothes, and even then their garments are still moist.

Many students have tried hanging their clothes outside, only to see them vanish.

Another Da Lat University student Ngo Ly Tan Thuy said she only goes to her room to study at night and sleep.

“We usually stay at school to study in the daytime,” she said.

Cooking in the tunnels is dangerous and rooms are often filled with smoke.

“We’ve had to evacuate several times because we couldn’t breathe when someone lets the room fill with smoke while cooking,” said student Ngoc Duy.

During the rainy season, rain flows down the steps and into most rooms, making them damp and dirty. Rooms often stink for weeks after heavy rains.

Student Le Thanh Hai said, “We’ve complained to the landlords and they’ve promised to help. But they haven’t.”

Hi all, I've received an sms and it goes like this "Ang dang lam ij vay? Khoe Khong anh" , i only knows the anh part and maybe khong = angry?

Ang dang lam ji vay? Khoe Khong anh
Ang?... should be Anh

Anh dang lam ji vay? = What are you doing?
Khoe khong anh = How are you? (in this context)

Khong = no. But in this context it is put behind a sentence to indicate it as a question for a yes no answer.

Khoe = Well

You don't need an IPhone just to have a portable Vietnam dictionary. The phone is overrated anyway. Plenty of better Windows Mobile PDA which can let you run softwares like..

Vietnamese-English -LingvoSoft Dictionary 2008 English <-> Vietnamese for Pocket PC (http://www.lingvosoft.com/Dictionary-English-Vietnamese-for-PocketPC/)

Don't be fooled by their "talking version", it only pronounes the English words not Tieng Viet. If you know where to look, you can get all these softwares free online.

I have been using this software from lingvosoft for at least 2 years. I will do the translation on my phone and show it to the gal, works everytime.

Ho Chi Minh City doctors have reported an alarming increase in the number of dengue fever cases, up to three times the number of cases usually reported at this time of year.

Health workers are also reporting an increase in the number of adults falling victim to the mosquito -borne virus.

HCMC Hospital for Tropical Diseases Deputy Director Tran Tinh Hien said the hospital had admitted between 150 and 200 dengue fever patients.

“The hospital receives between 30 and 50 cases a day,” Hien said. “Most patients come from District 2, District 7 and Tan Binh District.”

“The number of cases is double or sometimes triple the number we had at the same time last year,” he said.

Until October this year, the hospital, the city’s main facility for treating dengue patients, had admitted 9,600 dengue cases, 70 percent of which were adults.

Hien said patients of up to 50 year-olds had been admitted. Usually the maximum age for dengue patients was 25, he said.

“Many patients had thought they had just caught a cold that had gotten worse,” he said.

Hien warned patients against treating themselves with medicine from pharmacies, which could prove fatal.

The most extreme symptoms of dengue fever include hemorrhage, loss of consciousness, respiratory failure and abnormal liver, kidney and brain function. So far this year, five adult patients have died died from dengue fever after being hospitalized, he said.

Symptoms of dengue fever, a common disease in developing countries, include a high flu-like fever, skin rashes and severe pain in the head and limbs.

There is no vaccine to protect against dengue infection. The disease is transmitted by daytime-biting mosquitoes and international health organizations recommend people try to avoid being bitten by using insect repellant and wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants.

The increase in the number of cases has been blamed on this year’s extended rainy season, which usually ends in late October and the increasingly polluted urban environment that has created ideal conditions for mosquitoes to breed.

Vietnam tops Asian rankings in happiness
=============================

The results of the survey, released Wednesday, shows that Vietnam is expected to have the highest level of happiness in the region over the next six months.

Moreover, Vietnamese citizens are ranked first globally regarding how satisfied they are with the global political situation.

The Nielsen Happiness Study, which polled 28,153 respondents online this May, found that there are three main drivers of happiness – personal financial situation, mental health and work.

Vietnamese are very happy with their physical health, personal security and finance, the government and the country’s present economic situation and not so satisfied with the state of their mental health, access to health care and information, the survey report said.

Vietnam and Japan top global rankings in valuing parental relations as an important happiness factor.

Vietnamese also consider relationships with their boss as a strong happiness driver, The Nielsen Company discovered, suggesting this finding is something employers in Vietnam should take notice.

Asha Phillips, manager of marketing and communications at The Nielsen Company Vietnam, said 49 percent of Vietnamese save their spare cash, indicating the people’s forward-thinking orientation.

“Many of the world’s emerging markets outrank developed countries in terms of happiness and satisfaction levels in nearly all aspects of lives,” said Bruce Paul, vice president of Consumer Research at The Nielsen Company. “For consumers in rapidly developing markets, there could be a greater sense of appreciation for improved social welfare compared to what they had a few years ago.”

The survey also revealed that globally, women are happier than men in most of the 51 countries polled, with the exception of Brazil, South Africa and Vietnam.

More traffic gridlock on the way for HCMC
============================

There doesn’t seem to be an end in sight to the dreaded green traffic barriers that block the flow of traffic on many Ho Chi Minh City streets.

Over the next two years, 52 kilometers of city streets are supposed to be dug up as part of a US$270.3 million environment hygiene project and a $199.6 million drainage project.

Since last year, more than 30 kilometers of streets have been under excavation as work continues on the two projects, and some 200 street barriers have been creating traffic chaos across the city.

The environment hygiene project, which involves installing pipes to carry wastewater to the city’s waste treatment plants, has another 15.8 kilometers of pipeline to install under city streets over the next two years.

Dang Ngoc Hoi, from the project management board, said work is mostly finished on the pipe network that runs under Ton Duc Thang, Ham Nghi and Tran Hung Dao streets in District 1, which connect to a treatment plant in outlying Binh Chanh District.

Digging work for the drainage project, which will help alleviate flooding in the area around Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal, was started in May last year and about 16 kilometers of the roadwork has been finished.

The project must be completed by December 2009 but with more than 40 kilometers to go, the contractors have to excavate 3.9 kilometers of roadway a month.

Several main streets, including Nguyen Dinh Chieu, Vo Thi Sau, Hai Ba Trung, Phan Dinh Phung and Cach Mang Thang Tam, will be partially dug up.

Phan Hoang Dieu, director of the project management board, said the board has asked contractors to get as much work done as possible during the dry season which begins this month.

Dieu said the city authorities should support the project by helping clear out underground projects that obstruct the digging.

No work has been done behind the barriers on Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street in Binh Thanh District because the contractors and the water supply unit can’t agree on moving the water pipelines.

At the same time, no work has been undertaken behind a street barrier on District 5’s Thuan Kieu Street since last year because no approval has been granted to remove underground water pipelines.

Management boards of the environment hygiene and drainage projects are both worried about how to finish their projects on schedule when work is held up for months every time water pipelines are uncovered.

The pipeline owners, many of them joint stock companies, require an upfront payment of 70 percent of the cost for removing the pipeline.

The hygiene project management board admitted that no section of the project has met its deadline, mainly because of the increased cost of materials and higher interest rates.

Material suppliers raised their transport fees and began asking for payment in advance, the board added.

Subcontracted companies are also causing problems, with some construction subcontractors using the budget for other purposes, the management board said.

Early this month the management broke off with state-owned contractor Bach Dang Construction Company for being late in their work even though they had already been paid.

U see many Cafe in hcm but seldom see TEA House right, below there is a recommendation ...

A serene break
==============

Having tea is a special affair for two white-collar workers named Tran Ha Phuong and Tran Duong in Ho Chi Minh City, who often frequent teashops to relax after a hard working day.

“There are thousands of café shops or bars in the city, but teashops still attract many young people like us,” Duong said.

One of the women’s favorite spots is Thanh Son Zen Tea located at 17 Tran Quy Khoach Street in District 1, unique for its Buddhist decorations and serene ambiance.

“We come here not only to enjoy delicious teas, but also to learn how to enjoy the beverage in the proper manner,” Phuong said.

There are two types of tearoom at the shop – a big one to host groups of patrons and a private room.

The tea room features bamboo mats, black tables, and calligraphy pictures and lanterns hanging from the walls. Several green bamboo groves are strategically placed in the room’s corners hiding speakers that emanate sounds of trickling springs, temple bells and bird melodies. The interior layout creates a sense of peace and quietude for customers to escape from the hectic urban environment outside.

Before entering the tearoom, Phuong and Duong have to take off their shoes, turn off their cell phones, and talk in a low voice according to the regulations posted at the door.

More than 20 kinds of tea ranging from tra cung dinh (royal tea) to tra kho qua (colocynth tea) – each of which requires a different method of preparation – and 10 types of sweet cakes like banh com sua (rice milk cake) and banh dua nuong (coconut cake) are served from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Phuong and Duong order tra sen (lotus tea) and ginger candies to warm their spirits after the last rainfalls of the year. The women brew the liquid, pour out cups for one another, and read the calligraphy verses hanging on the wall while sipping their tea.

“Let’s drink tea.

Don’t talk about wealth or social positions.

Just enjoy your cup of tea.”

Rural girls are abandoning their villages in search of love and money in the cities, leaving behind packs of lonely young male workers.

It’s a familiar story - two prosperous families in the Mekong Delta have arranged a marriage between their children but the daughter would rather marry a man in the city than a man in the countryside.

Hai Q. in Cai Be District in the Mekong Delta Tien Giang Province, and Sau T. the owner of an agricultural supplies shop in the same district, wanted to arrange the marriage between their kids.

Q.’s 22-year-old son was doing well - managing four-hectare of rice paddies while T.’s daughter was studying at university in Ho Chi Minh City.

The families were crushed when the daughter said she wasn’t interested in marrying a farmer – no matter how well off he was – she wanted to marry a city man.

“I just want to have a husband in HCMC,” she said.

Nguyen Minh Nhi, former head of An Giang Province’s government, told a similar story of a poor girl who turned down the proposal of a wealthy neighbor only because she wanted to tie the knot with an urban dweller.

Many young girls have left Tien Chau Commune in the central Quang Nam Province to go to urban areas, leaving many single males, old people and children behind

The trend has become very common in Mekong Delta provinces in recent years, said Nguyen Hong Dien, chairwoman of the Hau Giang Province’s Women Union.

“Rural girls have flocked in droves to urban areas to look for jobs. I hardly see any of them return to their villages to marry local men,” Dien said.

“Even when they could not find prosperous men to marry, they’d rather marry workers in urban areas and settle there,” she said.

Nguyen Thi Xuan Huong, the office manager of Dong Thap Province Women’s Union in the Mekong Delta, agreed.

“The majority of people in rural areas in Dong Thap are the elderly and children, as many young girls leave for Can Tho City, An Giang Province, or HCMC to look for jobs,” Huong said.

The Mekong Delta An Giang’s Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, said in a recent report that female worker numbers in the local fisheries sector had increased to around 9,500. An Giang is the home of many fish processing plants which employ thousands.

The women’s union officials blamed the exodus from the rural areas largely on country girls’ dreams of better lives with a husband in the city.

Popular dramas and movies have focused on prosperous lives in urban areas, creating a perception in rural girls that settling down in major cities or provinces was the only way to have better lives, the women said adding that a “bachelor bomb” was likely to hit rural Vietnam in the near future.

But they said rural men could also blame themselves because so many were poorly educated and drank a lot after work.

Tran Van Nam, a 25-year-old bachelor of Thoai Son District in An Giang Province, admitted there was a lot of males who drank in the Mekong Delta provinces, saying it was virtually their sole recreation after work.

“I’ve left school after sixth grade and three girls have rejected my marriage proposals. Now I just put marriage down to destiny,” Nam said.

Tien Chau Commune in the central Quang Nam Province is also home to many bachelors, as the local girls have left for urban areas in the hope of better jobs and better lives.

The commune officials said a third of the population in the three hamlets were aged between18 and 30 but a lot of the young females had left, turning it into a bachelor town.

Foreign marriages

Mekong Delta Women Union officials also pointed to the high number of girls seeking foreign husbands.

They hope to secure marriages with rural Taiwanese or South Korean men who were also hit by the “bachelor bomb” back home, they said.

For instance, the Dong Thap’s Women Union said that since 1995, more than 11,800 local girls have married foreigners.

The high numbers paved the way for illegal marriage brokerage services.

In Vietnam, individuals and organizations are forbidden to carry out marriage brokerages.

Though only non-profit women’s associations can establish marriage support centers and marriage consultation services, the Vietnamese Ministry of Justice has recommended that the government legalize marriage brokering so that there could be better control of the industry.

The government Monday cut fuel prices and increased fuel import tariffs, for the third time in less than a month, in reaction to the continued fall of world oil prices.

The most popular 92-octane gasoline will now retail for VND12,000 (73 US cents) a liter, a decrease of VND1,000 or 7.7 percent, according to a press release from the Ministry of Finance.

The price of diesel will fall to VND12,000 a liter from VND13,000 and kerosene will sell for VND13,000 (78 cents) per liter from VND13,500, the release said.

“Since crude oil prices have tumbled a lot, we need to reduce retail prices in the domestic market to protect consumers’ interests,”

Nguyen Tien Thoa, head of the price-control department at the Ministry of Finance, said in an interview with Bloomberg Monday.

Crude oil for January delivery fell as much as $2.03, or 3.7 percent, to $52.40 a barrel in after-hours electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. New York oil futures have tumbled 64 percent from their July 11 record of $147.27 a barrel as the US, Europe and Japan headed for their first simultaneous recession since World War II.

As from today, import tariffs on gasoline, kerosene and mazut, a low-quality oil used by generating plants, will rise to 35 percent from 25 percent.

The government cut fuel prices on the 15th of last month and three days later raised fuel import taxes.

In early November, the Ministry of Finance recommended an increase in fuel import taxes to increase government revenue, which may not meet its targets because world oil prices have fallen below the projected figures used to set the government targets.

Vietnam, Southeast Asia’s third-largest crude oil producer, still imports most of its oil products due to a lack of refineries. Its first oil refinery in the central province of Quang Ngai is expected to come on stream next February.

HCMC ppl is MOST satisfy with their pri education service but least satisfy with their Land Title Deeds svc!!!

Primary education tops HCMC satisfaction survey
================================
A survey of people’s satisfaction with public services in Ho Chi Minh City has found primary education in top spot and issue of land title deeds in last place.

The annual study, jointly conducted by the city’s Development Research Institute and Statistical Office, polls people on eight services: garbage collection, transport, healthcare, issue of land ownership and construction licenses, notary office, income tax collection, and primary education.

This year’s survey found people to be “satisfied” with most services though satisfaction levels have been falling in the last two years.

Since 2006 the satisfaction index for public transport has fallen to 49.5 percent from 78.9 percent, for issue of land title deeds to 39.2 percent from 59.3 percent, and for healthcare to 68.9 percent from 78.2 percent.

Primary education was added to the survey this year.

A massage girl I met a few times last year keeps sending text messages.

I met her while having a massage, she seemed intelligent. She never wanted to provide "happy endings". So I went to meet her at her house, bought some flowers, let her teach me vietnamese, asked about her parents - and suddenly she was taking the initiative to lam tinh with me. We continued that for a while, until she started asking for money. I told her she's no good, she only wants money, and said I can get that from karaoke girls if I want - so she sends a text msg she will never sleep with me again.

After a few months she started calling me again, I refused the calls, and then she started sending txt messages, asking when I will come to see her.

I told her many times I am too busy to meet her now. So she says angrily that I am no good because I don't want to meet her.

I tell her that I want to meet her when I have time, and say that I am very happy that she writes to me, and that I want that she sends more messages.

answer (made me smile a little):

If you write each word correctly in vietnamese character then it makes no sense to me.. i have search thru the v dictionary and found :

Sai =to send
đâu = where ; somewhere ; anywhere ; everywhere
toi = to die, to waste
sửa = to repair to correct, to put right
đấy = here
cơ = opportunity
mà = where

Hu hu hu, why so difficult to translate?

Sai đâu toi sửa đấy cơ mà.

More buses run for HCM City-Cambodia trips
==============================
Ho Chi Minh City-based Sapaco Tourist Company increased bus tours between the city and Cambodia on December 4, the day the Vietnam-Cambodia visa exemption for ordinary passport holders takes effect.

At its station in HCM City, the company operates daily seven buses to Phnom Penh instead of five previously, departing at 6 am, 7am, 8am, 9am, 10am, 11:30am and 1pm.

At its station in Phnom Penh, the seven buses leave for HCM City at 6 am, 7am, 8am, 9am, 11:30am, 1pm and 2 pm.

In addition, Sapaco buses between HCM City and Cambodia’s Siem Reap, home to Angkor, now run daily instead of every two days.

Before December 4, Vietnamese holders of ordinary passports had to pay US$20 for Cambodia entry visa.

On November 4, the government of Vietnam and Cambodia signed an agreement on visa exemption. Under the agreement, which takes effect on December 4, citizens of both countries with ordinary passports valid for at least six months can stay up to 14 days in the other country without a visa.

Given this visa exemption, Vietnamese tour operators and tourism companies expect that more Vietnamese and Cambodian tourists will visit the other country.

English skill of Vietnamese students remains low
==============================

VietNamNet Bridge – The English skill of Vietnamese students remains at a low level in comparison with students in regional countries. Vietnamese students are not capable enough to use English in learning and research.

160 universities nationwide today are attending a workshop on teaching English in non-English major universities held by the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) and the US Educational Testing Service (ETS).

Before the workshop’s opening, MOET sent a questionnaire to 162 non-English major universities throughout the country and received replies from 59. What the ministry found from the survey was that the English skill of Vietnamese students is at a low level in comparison with students in regional countries.

87.2% of the surveyed universities said they set goals when compiling syllabuses for English teaching. However, the goals prove to be vague with no detailed criteria on the standards of English skills every year and the level of English learners should have at graduation. Only 15.6% of universities said they regularly amend syllabuses and teaching documents to improve teaching quality.

MOET has cited several reasons to explain the inefficiency of English teaching. No standard for English skills at different levels has been set, while this proves to be very necessary to serve the compilation of teaching documents, textbooks and syllabuses. A necessary progression does not exist in English teaching at different educational levels (primary, secondary, high school and university).

Meanwhile, the ministry has also pointed out that a lot of English teachers do not have opportunities for regular training. Many of them do not have opportunities to regularly communicate in English; thus, they lose active communication skills.

The examination and assessment of English teaching skills are still been carried out in the old way, with the focus on reading skill and geographical exercises. They do not pay appropriate attention to communication skills as required by newer teaching methods.

MOET has suggested a lot of measures to settle the problems. By 2012, students of four study branches, information technology, finance & banking, business administration and tourism, will hear lecturers in English. By 2020, English will be a teaching language for study branches which have high social demand.

The ministry allows and encourages students to learn English in advance and shorten the duration of required English learning. Vietnam will have an independent system of English skill recognition. There will be regulations on exempting English learning and examinations for students who have certificates of English granted by international or recognised domestic institutions.
