The above actually means Vietnamese Language Lovers Club.

I've roamed the streets of GL and Joo Chiat many a times in search of con gai dep (pretty girls). And in my attempt to try to chat up these girls (many of whom are able to speak Chinese better than me now), I have cultivated an interest in the language.

After months of struggle and huge 'tuition fees', I'm proud to say that my fluency of the language has escalated to the grand level of a 2-year old kid in Vietnam :D Though this thread was set up for the main purposes of discussing the language, I sure that many bros who are into the Viet scene could use some translation services sometimes. I know of many other brothers here who have mastered the language and I thought it'd be good if we could give back to our community. As such, I appeal for your contribution.

Personally, it would be great if i could pick up more of the language from the 'shifus' here

To kick off, here are some words you could find useful:

Khach san - pronounced as 'kark sun' meaning 'hotel'
lam tinh - pronouced as 'lum tern' meaning 'make love'
khong hieu - pronounced as 'com hay-u' meaning 'don't understand'
bao nhieu tien - pronounced as 'bow new ting' meaning 'how much'

:D

Hope it helps!

The best teacher is not us. Our pronunciation is not good enough. If u want to learn correct viet, u can consider the gals at JC/GL/ktv. Find a gal that can speak mandarin/english to teach you. That will speed up the process.

Boo jackbl,

First post in months and I'm in a bloody viet thread, haiz ... all the gangs' fault.

Anways, is there any use in actually listing the words without a viet gal mumbling them into your ears?

Tried to pick up simple ones these months and gave up and just figured those viet mouths are built differently from mine. However I tried, never quite get the tones right. Thai is so much easier.

Now ... :( my love for those girls that can't talk only last as long as my patience with not being able to communicate ... can't be bothered no more, they more free than me (plus getting money from me), let them learn MY language for a change.

Th4r ... signing off ... for another few months (maybe)

You can learn Vietnamese without going for classroom lessons. There're many CD-based, self-learn courses out there. Of course, not all are good. Without making this post sound like a commercial advertisement, let me know if you're interested in this approach. The one I tried is effective. Now I'm able to speak simple but gramatically-correct Tieng Viet. It sure beats just looking at the words on screen.

Brothers carmeo88 and technofreak,

There are two highly-recommended approaches to learning a new language out there. One of them is the Pimsleur Approach and this is the one behind the CD set that I got. I can't remember the name of the other one.

I find the method of learning very effective. When you listen to the CDs and repeat after the native speakers, you aren't simply memorising phrases mindlessly. Rote-learning doesn't help. Yes, you do learn new words and phrases, but more importantly, you learn the grammar too. You learn how words are stringed together to form proper phrases/sentences and so on. Then as you learn more new words, they get you to recall what you had learnt earlier (to move the words from temporary storage to permanent storage within your brain) and also to form new phrases by using mix and match (for example, they first teach you "Where is Orchard Road?" and "I want to eat in a restaurant", then later, you're challenged to form a new question on your own, "Where is the restaurant?").

I don't want to sound like I'm working for the publisher of the courseware, so you might want to do a search on Google. Use the keywords "Pimsleur approach". You can also visit www.pimsleurapproach.com. This site belongs to one of the many authorised resellers appointed by Simon and Schuster, Inc, the original publisher. I bought my Quick & Simple Vietnamese CD from them. However, since finding other resellers, I have ordered the next level courseware from someone else -- much cheaper! Incidentally I'm letting go of my Quick & Simple set. If you're interested, send me a PM.

Brother jackbl,

How did you managed to type out the Vietnamese script, complete with squiggles and dashes? I know the Vdict.com (Vietnamese dictionary) website does have a virtual keyboard but that would mean copying and pasting every single character.

Are you using some TSR program that programs Vietnamese scripts in your PC/laptop? Let me know... I'm interested to do the same.

You PRi 1 standard that means better than mine, i still have not reach pri 1 yet, how can be worse than me???

Anyway if you practise everyday and use it correctly, you can improve faster. Most of the websites teach vietnamese from Hanoi, a bit different from what the saigonese use. Nevertheless they formed the basic of vietnamese language that we need to know.

Those who are interested in having English-Vietnamese translations and vice versa, you can visit Vdict.com (http://vdict.com/?autotranslation). In the upper box, you can do transalation for one word at a time, but in the bigger box below, you can translate entire phrases or sentences.

Note that the phrase/sentence translations don't always work. You may get weird or ridiculous results at times, but you will get a fair idea of what the line means. :)

em se nhan lai nhung loi nay voi [sally]

isit==>
i have recieved the message, but how to sent to [sally]???

I believe the actual message with diacritics would be;

Em sẽ nhắn lại nhưng lôi nấy với Sally

I assume you are talking to the this Girl A, asking where she is or wanting to meet her.

Rough translation: "I will message back but now bringing Sally out"
Literal translation of : bring now with Sally.

You can reply something like,
"được, toi hy vọng có thể gặp em sớm"
"Ok, hope to able to meet you soon"

Anh Trai Thom07,

The only way we can attain the level of efficiency of their speech is to be put into a situation where you are forced to use the language daily.

That's how I (and you too i suppose) learned my vietnamese SMS skill so quickly... started from simple greetings to asking about things to more complex sentences.
My BX also knows this and keeps her SMS'es easy to understand but introduces a new word or two each time in her SMS so i slowly increase my vocab.

Having a personal tutor helps alot :)

I think this is a very very good way of learning the language - using sms - althugh sometimes girls do use some short forms which make deciphering a bit more difficult..another drawback is we sometimes might have to read the whole sentence before we can make out the meaning of some words cos one word can have a few meanings and our handphones do not have the vietnamese symbols...

Yup WantToCheong is right.

"or" is normally used as "hay" in a statement or question frame.

"I want to be your wife, i want to give birth for you 1 boy and 1 girl, I want to be with you my entire life"

Pretty much same as what Thom07 said... but with my own take on linguistic significance.

She knows zero English and I know close to zero Vietnamese. I managed to get her HP number and sent her SMS using the Vietnamese phrases that I gathered in this thread. The cat and mouse game has continued for 6 months already and I feel it is right time for me strike it and ask her to sleep with me. I tested water last week by sending "your breasts are nice", a phrase taken from this thread and she replied with a thankyou and winked at me when I met her next. No complaints to upper management or slaps on my face.

This where I need the Vietnamese linguistic experts help. The phrases on this thread are all good for "normal" conversation. But I need help with phrases to ask her three major phrases

1) When is you off day this week? Can I meet you on your off day? if yes, where?
2) Will you sleep with me?
3) You got a great pussy.

Any help will be deeply appreciated.

Also is there a safe hotel in Johor Bahru that I can bring her to for a 2 hour session or is it better to bring her to Singapore?

Actually the vietnam songs which I know are also limited. These r the few songers who I quite like. For the rest of the singers, r either I never heard b4 or i feel that their songs r very normal, or the singers r already very well known n I believe many bros had heard b4, no point introduce. For example, singer like Minh Tuyet. I believe her <sao anh ra di> r already well known by many bros. Currently all my favourite songs had already introduced finish liao. I will contribute again in bro fuckster thread to share with bros if i find new nice songs:D

ve nt ox nhe. hon bx.

This looks like a sms from a guy to gal..I will translate direct instead of rephrasing it.

wife go work return yet? return sms husband ok?? kiss wife.

Literally translation is correct but then the sms is a little bit confusing.

Man to girl or girl to man.

First line "Bx di lam ve chua?"
Second line "Ve nt ox nhe"
Third line "Hon bx"

If it is from girl to man then....

Maybe there is a mistake in the first & second line. Should be "Ox di lam ve chua?" & "Ve nt bx nhe" then the sms make sense. Gender mistake! Which mean...

Husband go to work return already?
Return sms wife, ok.
Kiss wife.

Or it could be the first line should be "Bx di lam chua ve". Sentence construction mistake. Then the sms should mean.....

Wife go to work not yet return.
Return sms husband, ok.
Kiss wife.

It could also be from a man to a girl which will mean....

Wife go to work already return?
Return sms husband, ok.
Kiss wife.

if u wan to master a language, u need to b hardworking. u must speak out and not scare of losing face. i have spend abt 1hr per day to learn this language. If u do the same i think u can do it better! Cheers!!!! :D

em nho anh, anh nho em, em yeu anh, anh yeu em, are the most basic phrases you have to understand when cheonging the viet scene coz this phrases are used more frequently than any others. :p

Haiz, missed those days when my friends used to tell me that 'lam tinh' means 'i love you'

In this context,

Em is not sis
Anh is not bro

If I say, anh yeu em, this does not means bro love sis. :D

The real meaning behind this sentence is:

Actually I am not tired...but I have been booked tonight....So cannot go...no choice but I need to lie to u that I have already went home sleep (in fact righte now I am sleeping with someone else).....Since u never book me then u go play with ur friends....I go for my booking....u play happy ok? Tmr meet if u want (if u can then pls book me)
