Re: Govt to pay 20 mil for the summit
Spending $20 million for no real results and to boost the legitimacy of a dictator?
Published on 2018-06-10 by Kwok Fangjie The meeting between American President Donald Trump and North Korean ‘Supreme Leader’ is an event that is unprecedented in many ways more than one. To facilitate the event, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Sunday (10 Jun) that Singapore will spend more around $20 million with security arrangements costing around half that figure. When pointed out that this is a high figure, he responded: "I think if you calculate the price of everything in this world, you will miss out on the really important things. As PM Lee himself noted, there have been tensions going on around the Korean Peninsula for 70 years and all that "cannot [be] wipe[d] that all away in one meeting". Many observers have questioned whether there was a need to spend such a huge amount, and if there was any real substance in hosting the meeting considering that Trump had cancelled it at last moment’s notice while there was a verbal sparring with Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani. North Korean Experts: Kim agreed to meet Trump to boost his personal legitimacy at home The Washington Post ran a story on Saturday (9 Jun) to explain that Kim's real reason in agreeing to meet Trump is to “cement” his “legitimacy” at home. According to North Korean leadership expert Ken Gause, Kim Jong Un “is a young leader who has no inherent legitimacy." This is in contrast to his grandfather Kim Il Sung who “was the leader of the North Korean revolution” and father Kim Jong Il who “spent 20 years building a myth and patronage network”. continue reading here : https://www.theonlinecitizen.com/201...of-a-dictator/

Re: Govt to pay 20 mil for the summit
It’s a government initiative, not a people’s movement – let’s not get carried away by one summit
Published on 2018-06-11 by The Online Citizen by Augustine Low Let Singapore be a good host for the Trump-Kim summit. Let’s give peace a chance. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Fresh from his return from North Korean capital Pyongyang, Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan declared that he was “very impressed” with the country. “Clearly, the government has been hard at work all these decades to upgrade their infrastructure . . . so the society itself is a very impressive society and a city in its own right,” said the Minister. But a CNN Fareed Zakaria Special shown this morning (8am, 11 June), “The Two Faces of Kim Jong Un,” talked about how the North Koreans mislead visitors into thinking that Pyongyang is like the rest of the country when in fact the majority of its people are starving, where food is rationed and electricity is in short supply. The Minister was only seeing one face of North Korea. The short answer to why dictator Kim Jong Un is opening up to the world, says Fareed Zakaria, is that he “is running out of money.” A recent BBC report dated 1 May 2018 concluded with this paragraph: “Decades of this rigid state-controlled system have led to stagnation and a leadership dependent on the cult of personality. The totalitarian state also stands accused of systematic human rights abuses.” So let’s not try and sweep everything under the carpet and start heaping praise on a country that for decades has been known as a hermit kingdom – a country which walls itself off from the rest of the world and is famous for its systematic human rights abuses. The Trump-Kim summit is a step in the right direction. The Singapore government has bragging rights for hosting it, deeming it a privilege and an honour. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has said that it is not just a whole-of-government effort but a “whole of Singapore effort.” continue reading here : https://www.theonlinecitizen.com/201...by-one-summit/

Re: Govt to pay 20 mil for the summit
St Regis Presidential Suite that Kim Jong-un is staying at in S’pore looks like this
In 2015, the room rate was going for S$12,450 per night. By Belmont Lay | 7 mins North Korea leader Kim Jong-un landed in Singapore on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at about 3pm. He was immediately whisked away from Changi Airport to his next location in a black Mercedes-Benz stretch limousine with tinted windows. A large convoy of vehicles with a heavy police guard then ushered Kim, believed to be 34 years old, to St Regis hotel — a stone’s throw away from the Orchard Road shopping belt. One of the most luxurious hotels in Singapore Rooms at the establishment start at S$320 (US$240) a night. On the 20th floor of St Regis is the opulent 335m2 (3,606ft2) Presidential Suite, where Kim is believed to be spending at least two nights in. He is scheduled to depart at 2pm on Tuesday, June 12, after his meeting with United States President Trump, which is slated to happen in the morning. The St Regis hotel says on its website its Presidential Suite rooms are “lined with gold, and accented with precious metals like brass, onyx and silver”, and features a Marc Chagall artwork and a white baby grand piano. Interior of Presidential Suite This is how the interior of the Presidential Suite looks like: No prices are given, but other US media are reporting the hotel to be charging about S$10,683 (US$8,000) per night. Previously in 2015, the Presidential Suite was listed as going for S$12,450 per night. It also comes with its own chef and balcony dining option for any presidential guest who might be feeling a little peckish. continue reading here : https://mothership.sg/2018/06/st-reg...e-kim-jong-un/

Re: Govt to pay 20 mil for the summit
Man lashes out at S’pore police outside St Regis about S$20 million Trump-Kim summit cost
Uncalled for. By Belmont Lay | 15 mins Traffic delays and disruptions to pedestrians are expected in the run up to Tuesday’s Trump-Kim summit. Any inconvenience caused to the public have been widely reported even before Saturday, June 9, as roads surrounding the Special Event Areas have been narrowed, blocked, and even reversed, as security is beefed up. Signs have even been put up to request the public to comply with orders. At least one Singaporean peeved, nonetheless Interestingly, Singaporeans have been admonished to steer clear of any negativity during these couple of days to put our best face forward with all eyes of the world watching. But it is impossible to police how everyone will react, as some might not fully agree to or comprehend why the summit ought to be held here. Such as this man, who ended up lashing out at the police outside Tanglin Shopping Centre beside St Regis, over the seemingly contentious issue of the Trump-Kim summit’s cost to Singapore: What he said The bearded, middle-aged man in sunglasses was caught on video gesticulating and shouting at the police, who appeared to ask him to take a different route. However, his response to the police officer can be described as online ranting carried into real-life. Other pedestrians seen in the video looked on puzzled. continue reading here : https://mothership.sg/2018/06/singap...lice-st-regis/

Re: Govt to pay 20 mil for the summit
u guys don't be so narrow minded la. If our foreign affairs and trade ministry are good, we can easily get it back via other means like trade, access to the untapped market of NK, cheap labor from NK in SG(esp for those lousy work which no one wanna do), refined oil/chemical, tax rebate for sg companies, etc, etc. Remember that China is no longer a cheap labor market anymore, setting up factories in NK is a big labor cost advantage for the next 10-15 years.

Using 20 Millions of taxpayer's money is small change for our Chow Ah Qua PM in order for him to get the Nobel peace prize this year for helping to bring peace to our world. Our PM would be famous around the world and even more famous than his dead Papa.

+ SG gov also earn quite a bit from their 'black' money in sg. like one brother mentioned, NK girls in Geylang legal house also good! I have seen some NK girls in KL, Cambodia before. most quite pretty not overly 'modified' as their southern counterparts! it's been maybe 70 years in 'war' and conflict and it might not be over in just one meeting la..
